Transposition

Week 2 tuesday

Transpose Monday’s chord exercise to two other keys on the Circle of 5ths.

Break this down into steps.

1. Transpose the left hand notes - scale degrees 1 – 4 – 1 – 5 – 1

Tuesday – Transposition Transpose Monday’s chord exercise to two other keys on the circle of 5ths.

2.  Play the first half of the progression. a.  Find the tonic chord (i) in your right hand.

b.  Slowly change i to iv and back to i.

c.  Notice that scale degree 1 stays the same while the other two notes move in parallel – up by step and back down again. Notice that scale degree 6 moves down to scale degree 5 by semitone. This gives the minor mode a very particular sound!

This week, there are two creativity prompts.

1. Harmony | Melody

- Create a chord progression of at least 4 chords using minor mode primary chords. Be creative and mix possible chord qualities - like:

- major subdominant (IV) instead of minor subdominant (iv)

- minor dominant (v) instead of major dominant (V)

- Create a simple left hand accompaniment pattern. This could be in the form of:

- block chords

- broken chords going up

- broken chords going down

- broken chords going up and down

- In the right hand, play simple melodies made only of chord tones. (So for a D minor chord, play a melody using only D, F and A).

- Once you can play your complete melody and chord progression, allow a single dissonant note. How will you resolve it to one of the notes in the chord? Do certain dissonant notes work better than others?

If so, why?

Week 2 wednesday

2. Twelve Bar Blues

- A twelve bar blues follows this pattern:

- For each chord, play the following pattern of alternating 5ths and 6ths in root position:

- In the right hand, play a single note per bar (or two!) from the blues scale. Again, notice which notes are dissonant - which are consonant. You can move from consonance to dissonance and back again like last week, or you can experiment with all dissonance or all consonance.

Which of these approaches suits this style?

Week 2 thursday

Today’s quick study piece is Heinrich Henkel’s ‘Piano Piece for the Young’.

1. Play just the left hand part, keeping steady time.

2. Label each chord, using Roman numerals i, iv or V(7).

3. Play the entire piece, keeping steady time. Notice how the right hand melody fits with the left hand chords.
