A slow journey aimed at learning about the local culture, arts, language, and people of Ghana, has led us to some very interesting places

g h a n a k e y. c o m 7
Day one: Kakum Forest's canopy walk way (p.18) is 40 meters above rainforest floor. See the forest canopy at eye level where jewels are exposed: Rosy Bee-eaters, Black Casqued Hornbill, Malimbes, Rufous-sided Broadbill, Narrow-tailed Starling, Senegal Parrot & so many more. Afterwards treat yourself to lunch at Hans Cottage, which overlooks a crocodile pond.
Day one: See Independence Square, the Arts & Crafts Centre and the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum & Museum, all on the oceanfront. Take a lunch break at the National Museum. Continue with a visit to the W.E.B. Dubois Center for Pan Africanism. (p.16)
Day two: Atiwa Forest (p.18). Be dazzled by the number of highly rated birds. Many serious birders have voted this forest the best. The list of notable birds include: Blue-headed Bee-eaters, Green Twinspot, Grey-headed and Red-tailed Bristlebills & the Olive-green Camaroptera.
Day three: Visit the Elmina Castle and Fort Jago. (p.18) After lunch, walk through the historical town of Elmina and its colorful fishing harbor. Spend the afternoon cooling off in a pool at one of Elmina’s beautiful Resorts.
Day two: Visit Cape Coast Castle and its museum (p.18), a concrete testimony of the world’s tragic slave trade. Stop for lunch at the Baobab House. Take drumming lessons at the castle. Go out for evening drinks at the Oasis and enjoy traditional dancing and drumming.
3 Day heritage Path
2 Days of birDing
Ghana is a bird watcher’s paradise with approximately 800 of Africa’s 1300 species of birds, a staggering figure considering Ghana occupies only 1.25% of Africa’s total land mass.
Day two: Head north to the Aburi Wood Carving Center (p.18). Find something you like or ask for something to be custom-made. While there, head to Mampong Centre for Scientific Research into Plant Medicine & take a stroll through Aburi Botanical Gardens. On the road back stop at the Wild Gecko for unique handicrafts.
Day three: Enjoy the fast pace of Makola Market dominated by women traders. Find everything including: seamstresses to sew traditional clothing, glass beads & shea butter. Head to Oxford street, visit Woodin Boutique or DaViva for some amazing fabric and Globalmamas for handmade crafts.
Day one: Experience the Arts & Crafts Centre, Ghana’s biggest craft market. Visit the Precious Minerals and Mining Company (PMMC), gold and diamonds in traditonal Ghanaian designs or customized. Lunch at Tribes Restaurant at the Afia Beach Resort, stop into the gallery to see their collection of West African artefacts. In the afternoon visit the Artists Alliance Gallery. Head further east to Teshie to the Kane Kwei Carpentry Works to admire hand sculpted wooden coffins featured by National Geographic. (p.16)

2 Concert PartyUnder colonial rule, the first concert party prac-titioners brought their comic variety shows to audiences throughout what was then the British Gold Coast colony. As social and political circumstances shifted through the colonial
period and early years of Ghanaian independence, concert party actors demonstrated a remark-able responsiveness to changing social roles and volatile political situations
as they continued to stage this extremely popular form of entertainment. Today the Concert Party is a spirited blend of comedy and social
commentary. A Ghanaian theatrical program that combines music, dance and drama. Starting with a live band performance, it continues with comedy and drama mixed with music and dancing.National Theater 2- 6:30 pm, GH¢5, free for kids under 10 years

July
Bakatue Fishing FestivalFirst Tuesday in July Benya River, Elmina Central RegionCelebrated annually, Bakat-ue has origins that pre-date the arrival of Europeans in Ghana. This colorful Fishing Festival by the Benya La-goon in Elmina celebrates the beginning of the fishing season. Chiefs and elders are carried through the streets on palanquins in full regalia, shaded by ornate umbrellas, to visit a sacred
shrine. The chiefs, followed by singers, dancers and stilt walkers, pour libation and sprinkle food at the shrine. A priest casts a net to signify the start of the fishing season. The first catch is offered up to the local deities to ask for a good season’s fishing - Elmina’s livelihood. There is also a regatta of canoes and a boat race on Benya Lagoon.
Asafotu-fiam FestivalFrom the last Thursday of July until the first weekend in August
Ada in the Eastern regionThe annual warrior’s festival of Asafotu-Fiam is celebrated by the people of Ada, near Accra. The festivals commemorate the victories of warriors in past battles as well as those who died. Participants dress in traditional gear and stage mock battles, which is both a part of the celebra-tion and also introduces the younger men to the warrior lifestyle. The festival also ushers in the season of harvest and acts as a purification ritual to bring the people prosperity in the coming year. Sunday, there is an open air church service and the following days are filled with beach parties, Traditional military groups called “Asafo Companies” dance through the street amid drumming and singing, there are boat races, river excursions and football matches.
Kente FestivalJuly/AugustBonwire, Ashanti RegionSignifies the commemora-tion of the origin of the Kente cloth, over 300 years ago. This Festival is a color-ful assembly of local chiefs and people of Bonwire. During this time par-ticipants adorn themselves with beautifully woven Kente clothes and designs, which they have created.
August
Akwambo FestivalFirst Sunday in AugustAgona Nyakrom, Central RegionAkwambo basically means “the making of a way”. It commemorates the migra-tions of the ancestors to this region.
Yaa Asantewa FestivalAugustEjisu-Juaben DistrictPeople from all walks of life are present to pay homage to Nana Yaa As-antewaa the brave Ashanti war heroine and those exiled to the Seychelles with her. In 1900, at the advanced age of 60-plus and defying a woman’s role in her society, Yaa Asantewaa, the queen mother of Ejisu stepped out of the shadows to lead an army of 20,000 men to
resist British imperialism in what is now known as the Yaa Asantewaa War. The Asante nation, to which Yaa Asantewaa belonged, fiercely resisted British attempts to colonise their territory. At the height of its glory, the Asante Empire (which came after the collapse of the earlier empires of Bono and Denkyira), en-compassed over 70% of present day Ghana, and could boast one of the most advanced systems of government on the continent.
Odambea FestivalLast Saturday of August Saltpond Traditional AreaThis event commemo-rates the migration of the “Nkusukum” people cen-turies ago from Techiman (500km away) to their present settlement. “Od-ambea” means “fortified
link”, representing the role played by the “Nku-sukum” people in keeping the migrant groups in touch with each other following their exodus from Techiman. A special feature of the festival is the re-enactment of the ancient life styles of the people, which is a unique opportunity to learn more about how these people lived.
Homowo Festival(Hooting At Hunger) AugustAccra (exact dates relies on harvests)A colourful festival celebrated by the Ga people in Accra. It is characterised by rituals such as the sprinkling of “Kpokpoi” (the festival dish) to the gods and ancestors for spiritual protection, processions of twins through the principal streets, traditional drumming and dancing and general merry-making. A month before the celebration, there is a ban on noise making. One of the highlights of the festival is that from noon to 6 pm any woman, no matter the status, should accept a hug from a man on the festival street.
