Editorially Speaking...Several references appear in this issue referring toWorld War II. I'm wondering if I'm being some-what maudlin.

Hope not!But I can't forget the fact that WWII affected

everyone of us in some manner. Whether or notit's the "Greatest Generation," as Tom Brokawwrote, is something for others to decide.

I really miss H. M. Wren and Peanuts Hinshaw. They were special friends of mine. Didn't knowHarold too well.

We played football, baseball, etc., etc., on theBenton School playground, along with Ed Gibbs,Jerry Brueckner, Leon Glascock, Don Hopper andothers. Our ranks were diminished by WWII.

So, sometimes I get a bit sentimental in spite ofrecognizing there were lots of them, there blessin'sin ensuing years.

No apologies. If editorials are supposed to have a purpose, I'll

keep looking for one.Meanwhile I can't forget!

We've been Kewpies longer than we may have thoughtMarjorie Jones Giest Stays Busy(and we all know how old she is)Maybe it's the exercising she does regularly, but fromnoting the many activities in which Marjorie Jones Geistparticipates, one might wonder, "how? ..at your age!

Pictured at left last summer in the gardens of theFranklin Park Conservator)',she says she is considered asenior citizen and attendsmany of the WorthingtonGriswold Center's activities, trips, lunches, etc.

Marjorie volunteers at theOhio State Medical Centerand still chairs the FranklinCounty OSU Mother's Clubwhich provides scholarshipsfor OSU students.

She married Norman Gi-est in 1953 and he died in2001.She has three children and six

grandchildren.A long time supporter of '43 Kewpie activities she

has attended most of the reunions over the years.Editor's note: In a recent conversation, Marjorie

said she had gotten into a tussle with a washing machine. She lost. And now, her back is talking back to her.

RUTH GENTRY CARR fractured her back twoyears ago. while lifting something too heavy, andunderwent a painful recovery. "It took a while to getover it, but I'm O.K. now."

She says she has some arthritis and other aches, but "it's just old age."

Her house was totally demolished four years agowhen hit by a tornado which went through the Seda-lia, MO area. It necessitated her moving to an apart-ment in the city.

She says she loves to work outside and keepsher car full of tools, so she can go back and workaround her former home, 10 miles away.

She has three sons, one grandchild and one greatgrandchild. Her husband, Albert Carr, died in 1960from service related disabilities.

LORENE BANGERT EMMERSON is not doingtoo well. A couple of years ago, she fell and seem-ingly never quite recovered. She is presently bedfastand under constant care.

GERALDINE SHORT SAPP says she's doing"fair."Then she said, "I'm doing pretty good." Last Juneshe broke her hip and was out of commission for awhile, but is doing O.K. now.

As she recovered, her son put her on a restricteddriving regimen so she doesn't stray too far.

Her husband, Joseph, died in January 2009 onhis 86th birthday. She has two children, four grand-

Blackmore receives different version of how we became KewpiesInformation for the following is from a January 7,2010 story in MyMissourian.com, entitled The untoldKewpie story shared by Charley Blackmore.

Heretofore, the accepted story of the origin of the Kew-pie as the HHS mascot has come from the news item thatthe out manned football team came up "smiling like aKewpie" on a particular play.

Charles Blackmore reported that "ironically on the100th anniversary of Rose O'Neill's creation of the doll,"he received another account of the adoption of the Kew-pie as the school's mascot.

Last year, Charley received an e-mail from LucyChurch, great niece of Sam Church, Columbia HighSchool class of 1914 and the first to letter in four sports.

(It was Columbia High School from it's beginninguntil 1928, when the new building was occupied and re-named David H. Hicktnan High School. It's first gradu-ating class was in 1928.

Prior to that time, classes were conducted in what'43 Kewpies remember as Jefferson Junior High School).

In the 1960s, Church visited his great niece, and re-counted how the school secretary kept the popular Kew-pie doll on her desk.

Before one of thebasketball games, sheplaced the Kewpie dollin the middle of thecourt, probably forgood luck. The entiregame was played withthe figurine remainingin that spot, and re-Above, the 1914 basketball team |maining unbroken. with Church second from left<

It survived the game, brought a victory and thereafterwas considered a good luck mascot.

Blackmore observes that the Kewpie appeared in the1914 Cresset yearbook (begun in 1912), associated withthe basketball team, "...whose loyalty to the school and tothe Kewpie motto, "Keep Smiling," has won the statechampionship."

If you are as old as we, there's nothing wrong with nostalgiaELEANOR SHARP MUSGROVE, who did secre-

tarial and church work in formerdays, says she now takes careof the house and meets withfriends as often as she can. Shelikes to read, play bridge andparticipate in church activities.

She married Weldon Mus-grove in 1947. The couple havetwo children and two grandchildren.

ROY LUTES said the first half of last year was good, but the last half wasn't so good. He and wife, Edith, usually walk quite a bit, but around the first of July, after six laps around the cul-de-sac, they both fell onthe seventh.

Edith banged up her left side pretty well and heskinned up his arm...and then had pneumonia.

ED DULANEY spends most of his time as the primarycaretaker for his wife, Norma, who is suffering froma severe disorder. He says he is doing pretty good, saying, "I've dodged a few bullets." His balance isoff a bit, due to a problem from a few years ago, butotherwise, I'm doing O.K.

He adds that he doesn't know whether it's acu-tally a "nap," but it seems that when he starts readingthe newspaper, he dozes off.

Editor's note: Sound familiar ?BETTY FORB1S BRUECKNER has gone shop

ping," reported husband, '44 Kewpie, Jerry Brueck-ner. He says Betty is going strong.

The couple live in Gravois Mills, MO, on theLake of the Ozarks where they have lived since1973. They have three children. One son died ear-lier. One son lives in Australia and maintains dualcitizenship. His U.S. address is Jerry and Betty's andJerry said he realized he was getting old, when hisson started getting invitations to join AARP.

They have five grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren. .

HAZEL THARPE WILLETT says, "I guess I willwork next year." She serves as an administrativeassistant to a member of the Missouri House of Rep-resentatives. She is thinking about working reducedhours this year.

In 2009, she underwent extensive surgery, butreports, "I feel really well, in fact, much better thanbefore I had my surgery. Came back to work in sixweeks. Guess our generation had some pretty toughold broads."

Editor's note: I find it convenient not to com-ment on last comment, jbf

SPENCER WEGNER is stillfarming with the help of twosons, and in his spare time doesa bit of grass mowing. In 1953he married Shirley Semon, acousin to '43 Kewpie, RussellSemon. Spencer and Shirleyhave two children and threegrandchildren.

RUTH YATES SAPPENFIELD moved from Flor-ida to Texas a couple of years ago. It appears she issuffering from "climate shock." Ruth said she wassort of looking forward to a bit of colder weather Itappears she got her wish as Dallas endured one of itscoldest.

She and Mittens (her cat) fared well.BOB DELONG c-mailed one day to say that Jay El-

liot and he wanted to call Helen Burnett Stcadmanwho lives fairly close to Bob in southern California."Did I have a phone number? After getting the num-ber, they called Helen, went by her house, but wereunable to make connections.

Nearly every year, Jay and his wife, Dorothy, visit Ed Turner, who also lives not far from Bob..lav's brother married Ed's wife sister.

The World War II Memorial in Washington is something to seeROBERT KEMPER says he's doing O.K..."just as

ornery as ever." Last May he fell and broke his righthip. He says it's doing as good as it should be, butthey're still working at it. They took a screw out, butstill have some more to do.

Otherwise, he says, "I'm doing great."He and wife, Betty volunteer at the Columbia

OLETA FORSEE underwent a procedure on her backin January. During her recuperation, husband Joeassumed the household duties, under her supervision,of course. He's pretty good at the dish and clotheswashing, vacuuming, dusting, etc., but at cookin', heain't so hot.

JEAN HEIBEL SMALL says that although it seemsthat she and her husband are slowing down, they areall right. After 15 years in Florida, they moved to theSt. Louis area three years ago. Her brother, Jack, stilllives in Columbia.

JIM SHOCK had several operations on his nose andthroat last July, but says he is doing fine now. Heand Marianne sold their home in Ashland, OR andnow reside year 'round in Palm Desert, CA.

Editor's note: Several years ago Jim called meand said, "I'm in Ashland." Since I live in Ashland.MO, I got all excited and wondered where I couldmeet him. After all, Ashland, MO isn't that big.

Then he explained he was in Ashland, OR. jbfBONNADEL PENDELTON is doing O.K. and al-

"Dear Adolph"Produced by Helen D. Williams, assistant principal and speech teacher, in 1943, the patriotic narrative work was inthe form of a letter to German leader Adolph Hitler, who had thrust the world into the World War II conflict. Pre-sented many times to various audiences at schools and around Columbia, it was also presented at the Missouri StateTeachers Convention in Kansas City. The group rode the Wabash railroad to get there.
