HISTORY Abram Warren was born Abram Wäänänen in Pudasjärvi parish, Oulu province, Finland in 1847. He married Margaret/Reeta Pähti, also of Pudasjärvi. Both Abram and his wife inherited farms in the remote parish of Pudasjärvi, which is situated near the Russian border in the Northern part of Finland, just south of Lappi province (Lapland) and the Arctic Circle. Abram Warren/Wäänänen was one of the earliest Finns in Northern Michigan’s Copper Country, first coming to the United States in 1879, shortly preceding the large wave of Finnish immigration to the Keweenaw Peninsula that began in the 1880’s. As a steamship agent and broker he was instrumental in not only aiding the migration of Finns, but also helping people send money to Finland. He permanently emigrated with most of his family, excepting daughters Amanda and Alma, in 1886-1887. The family name was changed from Waananen to Warren around the turn of the 20th century. The Warrens lived at 402 Pine Street in the village of Red Jacket (later called Calumet), Michigan. In addition to running a steamship agency, Abram Warren owned a jewelry shop on Pine Street. He was also a craftsman and clock-maker. After the death of Margaret (Pähti) Warren in 1918, Abram moved to Detroit, and died in 1922. The children of Abram and Margaret (Pähti) Warren were: 1 – Amanda (Warren) Laplander/Blander was born about 1867. When her family permanently immigrated to the United States in the late 1880’s, Amanda, then aged about 20, stayed behind with her sister Alma and ran the family business in Pudasjärvi. In Finland she met and married Jacob Laplander from the city of Oulu, who was the son of a leather worker. Jacob and Amanda (Warren) Laplander came to the United States in the winter of 1898/99 and the family name was eventually changed to Blander (although Jacob’s many brothers who also immigrated, Hans Alfred, Isaac, Emil, Erik, and Arthur, kept the name Laplander). The Blanders were given $1,000 of start-up money by Abram Warren upon arriving in the Keweenaw Peninsula. Jacob Blander had a contract to fill trains with coal for a railroad company and later took up farming in Bootjack, Michigan. Jacob and Amanda had two children: Margaret born in 1900 and Armas born in 1901. When Margaret Blander attended Wayne State University in Detroit, about 1920, the entire family moved to the Detroit area and Jacob Blander farmed near Harbor Beach, Michigan. Later Jacob Blander and his wife returned to Calumet, Michigan where they started J. E. Blander General Merchandise store, which was located in the Maggie Walz Block.

Jacob and Amanda Blander were members of the Finnish Apostolic Lutheran Church, a denomination born out of the ascetic Laestadian Lutheran traditions of Arctic Scandinavia which also took root where Finns settled in Northern Michigan and Minnesota. Their daughter, Margaret Blander, did not follow the strict Lutheran tradition and identified herself as a socialist who was also sympathetic to the teachings of Christian Science. The Blanders' son, Armas, was a member of the Church of Christ Scientist. Margaret Blander graduated from the University of Michigan in 1927. She also attended Columbia University in New York City and studied history, as well as the University of Chicago where she was a sociology Masters Candidate. She held many jobs and died, un-married, 26 June 1988 Marin County, California. She saved much of her correspondence, pictures, and other memorabilia. These items are now preserved at the Keweenaw National Historical Park Archives as the Margaret Blander and Helmi Warren family papers. Like his sister Margaret, Armas Blander also held a variety jobs, including as a police officer in Detroit in the 1930’s. He married Eleanor Aittama 12 Oct. 1944 at the age of 43. They had two children: David Armas Blander and Jack Edward Blander. Armas Blander died in October of 1979 in Los Angeles, California. 2 – Alma Wäänänen, the second child of Abram and Margaret (Pähti) Warren, was the only child of Abram and Margaret to stay in Finland. She married Emil Leskelä. They remained in close contact with their family in America, and there is photographic documentation that Emil Leskelä visited the Blanders in the Untied States. They were also Laestadian Lutherans, as evidenced by their letters, which they signed by saying, "Jumulan Rauha" (God’s Peace), the greeting still used today by Finns of the Laestadian tradition in the United States and Finland. 3 – Matilda (Warren) Hendrickson was born about 1871 and died at the age of 31 on 16 October 1902, leaving behind three young boys: Emil, Alan, and Bruno. She married Emil Hendrickson (later Henderson), who was a printer and started a Finnish Newspaper, the 'Kuparisaari Sanomat,' in Hancock, Michigan. After Matilda Warren's death, Emil Henderson removed to Waukegan Illinois. The Warren and Blander families kept in close contact with the Henderson family, including Emil Henderson’s second wife, Sophia. 4 – Ida (Warren) Tauren was born 25 February 1875. She married Victor Tauren on 24 September 1902 in Calumet, Michigan, who was then a miner. Although the large majority of Finnish immigrants came from the rural areas of Ostrobothnia, Savo, and Northern Finland, the Tauren family hailed from Helsinki. Victor and Ida (Tauren) lived with the Warrens until after 1920 and lived in Detroit in 1930, where Vic Tauren worked as a tractor driver at an auto plant. Later, the family moved back to Calumet and started a service station on Pine St. Their sixth child, Betty Tauren, would marry Walfrid Lassila, and it is in the attic of their home in Laurium, Michigan where the Margaret Blander and Helmi Warren family papers were discovered. Vic Tauren was probably not a member of

a church of the Laestadian tradition, as he joined the Knights of Kaleva, a Finnish fraternal organization which was frowned upon by the more pious religious groups. 5 – August Warren was born about 1878. He married Ruth E. Berryman on 9 October 1912 in Calumet, Michigan. Like his father, August Warren worked in the jewelry business, and owned stores on 5th Street in Calumet and later, Detroit. He was a member of the Church of Christ Scientist as well as the Knights of Kaleva. His only child, Margaret Warren, wrote for the Detroit News and was art editor for Grand Rapids Journal before becoming a staff editor and illustrator for the prestigious Christian Science Monitor. 6 – Mary (Warren) Huhtelin was born 6 December 1879 and was listed as a dressmaker on the 1900 Census. She married Paul Robert Huhtelin, a miner, on 30 December 1905. The entire family moved to Finland about 1911 and returned in 1912. The Huhtelins would remove to Detroit and remain close with the Warren and Tauren families, who had also moved there. 7 – Helmi Warren, the seventh child of Abram and Margaret (Pähti) Warren, graduated from Calumet High School in 1903, at a time when it was unusual for an American Finn to attend high school. An anecdote about her experience with anti-Finnish prejudice, when a playmate’s mother would not let her daughter play with Helmi, whom she called a “Mongolian,” begins Armas K.E. Holmio’s definitive work: “History of the Finns in Michigan.” She was a schoolteacher in the rural Finnish community of Tapiola, Michigan in the early 1900’s and later taught at other schools. Helmi Warren moved to Detroit and was very active in the Finnish community, providing accounting, translating, and other acculturation services to Finnish Americans, serving as a tax preparer and Notary Public. Holmio reports that she was also, like her father, a travel agent. Ms. Warren was involved in the Finnish Center of Detroit and member of the Ladies of Kaleva (a sister organization of the Finnish fraternal organization Knights of Kaleva). She was the first Finnish member of the Cosmopolitan Women’s Club in Detroit in the early 1920’s. Helmi Warren was on the staff of the short-lived Finnish newspaper 'Detroitin Uutiset' (Detroit News) in 1926 and assisted Reino Suojanen when he was editor of the 'Valvoja,' a Finnish Newspaper based in Calumet. Even though the 'Valvoja' was the paper of the many pious Laestadian/Apostolic congregations, Helmi was a follower of the teachings of Christian Science. Three of her photograph albums, a collection of books, and letters written by Ms. Warren to the Blander family, are preserved at the Keweenaw National Historical Park Archives as the Margaret Blander and Helmi Warren family papers. 8 – Alina (Warren) (Pesola) Kumpala was born about 1888. She bore a very strong resemblance to her older sister, Amanda Blander. However, while sisters Amanda Blander, Mary Huhtelin, Ida Tauren, Helmi Warren, and Alma Leskelä of Finland appear close and are well represented in the correspondence and pictures of the Margaret Blander and Helmi Warren family papers, Alina is not often mentioned.

9 – Arthur Emil Warren, the youngest child of Abram and Margaret (Pähti) Warren, was born 6 June 1893 in Calumet, Michigan. He enlisted in World War I on 6 June 1917, described as being of tall height and medium build, and having blue eyes and brown hair. He would later work as a naval school instructor in Charleston, South Carolina. Like his sister Alina, Arthur is not very prominently represented in the Margaret Blander and Helmi Warren family papers. MARGARET BLANDER CHRONOLOGY: Abt. 1918 - Taught school for two years in a country school “after graduation from high school.” Saved money to attend the “State University” in Detroit, almost certainly Wayne State University. Abt. 1920 – Margaret Blender attended Wayne St. University, her parents and brother also moved to Detroit. Abt. 1921 – Attended the University of Michigan for one year. Abt. 1921 – 1926 – Worked in the claim department of Detroit United Railway Co., Highland Park, Mich, performing stenographic and seceretarial work. 1925 – The Blander family lived in Harbor Beach, Michigan, where Jacob Blander had a farm. 1927 B.A. from University of Michigan, Class of ’27. Aug. 1927 – Aug. 1928 Employed as secretary of the Department of Mechanism and Engineering Drawing, University of Michigan. 1931 – Trip to Europe. 1931 – 1933 - Worked for Social Science Abstracts at Columbia University, New York City, as editorial assistant. Also attended Columbia University, taking courses in History. Lived at 305 W. 91st St. in New York City in 1932 and 290 Riverside Dr. in New York City in 1933. 1935 – Worked for the National Occupation Conference, Washington, D.C., as editorial assistant. 1935-1936 – Lived at 2007 Eye St. N.W. in Washington D.C. 1936 - 1939 worked at the United States Department of Justice and the United States National Archives, Codification Board. 1937 – Worked at the President’s Committee of Vocational Education as a research Assistant.

1939 – Left her job in Washington D.C. to care for her father in Calumet, Michigan. 1939 – Attended the University of Chicago and lived at 6035 Dorchestor, Chicago, Illonois. 1943-45 – Worked for the War Manpower Commission in Washington, D.C. 1943 – In addition to the War Manpower Commission, Margaret Blander also earned money from father, Jacob Blander, Bureau of National Affairs in Washington D.C., and the American Association of University Women in Washington, D.C. 1946 – Worked for the Office of Price Administration. 1946 – Attended USDA Graduate School. 1947-1948 – lived in Miami Beach, Florida and cared for her father. 1948 – Earned money from the University of Miami. Lived at 1011 NW 41st St., Miami, Fl. 1949 – Worked for the Copper Country Printing Co. 1950 – Wrote an English-language column in the Valvoja newspaper. 26 June 1988 – died in Marin County, California. He always had at least a half dozen men working for him… My father was [also] his own architect… When I was about 15 [abt. 1915], my father lost his position… and instead of taking a position which his railroad offered him, he bought a farm in Bootjack, Michigan. He also had a contract to coal freight steamers in two towns, a seasonal and periodic job, and his farm was located between the two ports… The dozen years my father (who had never been on a farm in his life) spent in farming were a period of hard work and deprivation… [after working a few unskilled factory jobs in Detroit] his next farming venture was in Southern Michigan [near the town of Harbor Beach], which is a better region agriculturally, but there too the returns were poor. He had wanted a farm all his life… Or a store. But my mother vetoed the idea of a store very sternly—“he’d give everything away.” In this she made the mistake of her life. When my father finally did start a store, it deveopled that he was the ideal shopkeeper…, especially in a Finnish community [such as Calumet - where Jacob Blander’s store was located – in the historic Maggie Walz Block.]… I suppose it was fear of embarrassment which led my parents to change their name from Laplanderi [sic] to Blander. ABRAM WARREN/WÄÄNÄNEN was born in 1847 in Pudasjärvi, Finland and died about 1922 in Detroit, Michigan. He married MARGARETA/KREETA/REETA PÄHTI in Pudasjärvi, who was born 17 April 1846 (calculated from age at death), the daughter of Andrew Pähtinen, and died 31 Dec. 1918 in Red Jacket [Calumet], Michigan. About her maternal grandparents, Margaret Blander says: “My mother’s father was made of sturdy stuff. He had inherited land – and so had my grandmother – in Pudasjarvi [sic]. He was a good craftsman, especially in clock-making. He made his first visit to America when he was a young man, and he was one of the early settlers of the Copper Country [or Keweenaw Peninsula] in [Northern] Michigan. He established a jewelry store [on Pine Street] and ran a steamship agency. Through the later activity, he was influential in settling the Copper Country with Finns. He traveled back and forth between the old and new countries for some time, but finally settled down in the United States. The younger of his children were born in this country, and seven of his children grew to be adults [not counted among these seven are Mathilda (Warren) Hendrickson who died at the age of 32, and Alma (Leskelä) Wäänänen, who stayed in Finland]. ” Margaret Blander continues: “Because my mother was the oldest of the children, it fell upon her to remain in charge of the land in Finland, accompanied at times by a younger sister [Alma (Leskelä) Wäänänen], while the rest of the family was in the United States. Finnish farms at that time were run with a couple of “rengiä” [farm-hands] and a dozen “piikoja” [maids]. She took care of the Finnish place for a dozen years… My mother was a proud woman, and how she felt about her whippersnapper younger sisters and their American ways, I can only imagine.” Abram Wäänänen first came to the United States in the year of 1879, shortly preceding the large wave of Finnish immigration to the Keweenaw Peninsula. As a steamship agent and broker he was instrumental in not only aiding the migration of Finns, but also helping people send money to Finland. He permanently emigrated with most of his family, excepting daughters Amanda and Alma, in 1886-1887. As “Abram Waananen” he was naturalized on 17 January 1893. The family name was changed from Waananen to Warren around the turn of the 20th century. The Warrens lived at 402 Pine Street in the village of Red Jacket [later called Calumet], Houghton County, Michigan. The family of their daughter and son-in-law, Victor and Ida (Warren) Tauren, lived with them in 1909, 1910, and 1920. DESCRIPTION The Margaret Blander and Helmi Warren family papers contain correspondence, mostly during the years of World War II, over one thousand visual images, including four albums and about 250 postcards, books, travel and entertainment ephemera, and exams and notes from Margaret Blander's university studies. The collection spans almost every aspect of Finnish-American life in Northern Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula, including the adjustment to American life by immigrants and their children, the meeting of pious Laestadian Lutheran traditions and left-leaning socialism, Finland’s Winter War, and World War II. Women’s Studies: The creators of much of the material in this collection were independent women, offering value material for researchers interested in women's studies. Amanda (Warren) Blander, at the age of about 20, stayed in Finland to take care of the family business for fifteen years after almost all of her family left for America. She finally came to the United States in 1898 and had her first child at the age of 34. Helmi Warren graduated from Calumet High School in 1903 (There was only one recognizable (un-Anglicized) Finnish surname, Karinen, among the 42 graduates.). Helmi would go on to be a school teacher, travel agent, accountant, and notary public. She joined many organizations, including the Ladies of Kaleva in Detroit, and was the first Finnish member of the elite Cosmopolitan Women’s Club in Detroit. She worked for the Finnish newspapers ‘Detroitin Uutiset’ and ‘Valvoja,’ published a book called "English for

the Finn" in 1941, and was involved with the Finnish Center in Detroit, Michigan. The push and pull of domestic life versus public life is evident in the correspondence of Helmi Warren, who called Mother's day "the loneliest day of the year" (00010/001.06-012). She never married. Helmi’s niece, Margaret Blander, would also never marry. She studied at Wayne State University, received her Baccalaureate from the University of Michigan, studied history at Columbia University while working for that university's Social Science Abstracts department, and was a Master's Candidate during the flowering of the field of sociology at the University of Chicago. Throughout the late thirties and the war years Margaret held a variety of positions within the federal government including the Codification Board, Justice Department, President's Committee of Vocational Education, War Manpower Commission, and the Office of Price Administration. She received at least two invitations to the White House from Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt. It is also noteworthy that a cousin of Margaret Blander, Margaret Warren, also as a single woman, held a prestigious post as an editor of the Christian Science Monitor. World War II: The invasion of Finland by Communist Russia in 1939 - the Winter War – also deeply affected American Finns. The Margaret Blander and Helmi Warren collection contains correspondence which records this flashbulb moment (00010/001.05-007). There are over 150 letters written by Jacob and Amanda Blander (in Finnish) during the war years (00010/001.05-003 and 00010/001.07-005), as well as the letters of cousin Paul “Piv” Huhtelin from the European Theatre (00010/001.03-010, 00010/001.04-003, and 00010/001.06-006). Armas Blander also served shortly in the war. The Warren and Laplander families hailed from Oulu province, which was partially destroyed during the Winter War and Continuation War. At the close of the war, the Nazis completely burned some areas of Northern Finland (as well as Northern Norway and Northern Sweden) as they retreated. Correspondence in this collection records the sending of supplies and aid to their Finnish cousins in 1945 and 1946. Finnish-American Socioeconomics:

Generally speaking, many of the Copper Country Finns could be divided into two groups: the religious Finnish Americans ("Church Finns") and the politically active, usually leftist "Hall Finns". Although Jacob and Amanda Blander were members of the Finnish Apostolic Church (which has its roots in the ascetic Laestadian tradition), their children did not follow this path - their daughter, Margaret, was a politically active socialist who was a member of the League for Independent Political Action in 1931 - her ephemeral items include publications from the American Workers Party and the League for Industrial Democracy. She worked for the United States government and even did some lobbying. The Blanders’ son, Armas, became a member the Church of Christ Scientist. Amanda's sister, Helmi Warren, would also become a follower of Christian Science, while at the same time working for the 'Valvoja,' the Copper Country Laestadian / Apostolic congregations’ Finnish newspaper. One of the most remarkable elements of the collection is that even though there were pious Laestadians, leftists, and Christian Scientists all “under the same roof,” the correspondence seems to indicate that they all found a way to get along. Upon arriving in the United States, the Finnish immigrants, like most "new immigrants," found themselves in jobs that required manual labor, such as mining, logging, or farming. However, Abram Warren was a broker for a steamship company and owned his own jewelry shop. His son, August, also ran a jewelry shop in Detroit. Jacob Blander ran a general store in the Maggie Walz Block and Vic Tauren owned a service station. The Margaret Blender and Helmi Warren family papers shed some light on the small group of Finnish business owners. There is a picture from an 1895 picnic attended by Maggie Walz and the Warren daughters (00010/003.03.01-03#04). It is also probably not a coincidence that Edward Nara, of the prominent Nara family, witnessed Abram Warren's naturalization certificate. The Warrens were obviously a family of means. When Amanda (Warren) Laplander/Blander finally did join her family in the United States in 1898, the ship manifest records that they had $100 (while most families only had $4 - $6). Margaret Blander tells that her parents were given $1,000 by Abram Warren to start their life in America (00010/001.01-07).

The photos of Helmi Warren indicate that the family traveled to Europe in 1908, visiting Helsinki, Lahti, Oulu, and the port of Hanko, Finland. They also visited Viipuri in Finnish Karelia, an area that is now part of Russia, and Copenhagen. Other photos include trips to Tucson, Arizona, Vermont, and Waukegan, Illinois. Margaret Blander went to Europe in 1931 and lived in New York City and Washington D.C. The Blanders frequently traveled to Florida in the 1940’s and also drove to the West Coast, visiting Yellowstone National Park, California, and Oregon. Finnish-American Identity: The correspondence in the Margaret Blander and Helmi Warren family papers often discusses the complicated issue of identity for immigrants to America. While completing a sociology questionnaire for the Dr. Heikki Waris (a famous sociologist in Finland) in 1935, Margaret Blander refers to the push and pull of Americanization by at once bemoaning the “pathetic eagerness with which American Finns tend to glorify such achievements as the winning of foot races and the paying off national debts,” but also remembering “how we Finns squirmed when we read in our geography books that the Finns belonged to a yellow race” and that a teacher called the ways of Finnish immigrants “primitive.” In this same questionnaire she concludes that “I never did feel (that) the Lutheran fundamentalism was alien to the tradition of American Puritanism,” (00010/001.01-07) at the same time writing extensively in many other letters of the conflict that existed between her fundamentalist ethnic parents and her efforts to become a modern American. Even Helmi Warren, who devoted much of her life to helping Finnish Americans and spreading Finnish culture, writes in one of her letters during World War II that she “feels more American than Finn,” while questioning the decision of a Finnish-American neighbor to leave his wife and family and join Finland’s fight against Russia (00010/001.06-012). Genealogy: Of genealogical value are the hundreds of photographs of Finnish Americans. Also of note is the compiled Laplander genealogical information (the Laplander brothers have many descendants still living in the Copper Country).

ORGANIZATION [Organization]The Margaret Blander and Helmi Warren family papers are organized into seven series, mostly in order of significance, with the Correspondence Series coming first. However, the (un-mailed) Postcard Series is second so as to facilitate easier storage, succeeding the mailed postcards which are filed with the correspondence. Series three is the photograph collection, followed by newspaper clippings. Series five is the Margaret Blander Personal Series, which includes various ephemeral items (featuring two invitations to the White House from Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt, one of them being a garden party) and items from her university studies. The sixth series is the Miscellaneous Series, containing items that did not fit into the hierarchy of the first five series. The seventh and final series is Books, which are shelved in the library. PROVENVANCE The Margaret Blander and Helmi Warren family papers were discovered in the attic of a home owned by Walfrid and Betty (Tauren) Lassila at 429 Pewabic St. in Laurium, Michigan. When the property was purchased by Dale and Betsy Ninko, they notified the NPS about the collection and donated it to the Keweenaw National Historical Park Archives. The collection was acquired on 19 April 2006 by Brian Hoduski, Jo Urion, and Stuart Baird. Betty (Tauren) Lassila was Margaret Blander's cousin and Helmi Warren's niece. The Tauren family lived with the Warren family in Calumet, Michigan ca. 1909 - ca. 1920. In the 1930's and 40's Helmi Warren lived with members of the Tauren/Lassila family in Detroit, Michigan.

SERIES DESCRIPTIONS

I. SERIES I: CORRESPONDENCE Margaret Blander folded her correspondence and saved them in eight envelopes, which roughly reflect periods of her life. The subseries hierarchy of the Correspondence Series maintains the original order given by these envelopes. Within the subseries the envelope is filed first then the correspondence is organized by sender. Subseries I is Miscellaneous Correspondence, containing items which were found in different parts of the collection, including objects filed with Jacob Blander's funeral materials, one of which is Jacob Blander's last letter to his children. (Amanda Blander's last letters to her children were filed by Margaret Blander in her "Personal History" envelope, which is subseries A) Subseries J contains postcards which included correspondence, organized by sender. These postcards were originally found among a set of un-mailed postcards, which comprise Series II.

II. SERIES II: POSTCARDS The items of Series II, Postcards, were found together in one set. It should be noted that the mailed postcards of this set were filed in subseries J of the Correspondence Series. There were additional postcards sprinkled throughout Margaret Blander's correspondence envelopes (subseries A through H of the Correspondence Series). These were kept in the original order and can be found in their respective subseries. Lastly, Helmi Warren's photo albums, found in the Photographs Series, Albums subseries, also contain a handful of postcards. These were kept in their original order and not removed. III. SERIES III: PHOTOGRAPHS The Photographs Series contains three albums that were owned by Helmi Warren and one album that was given to Amanda Blander by Margaret Blander for Christmas, 1942. There are a variety of studio photographs (both mounted card photos and in framettes) from a variety of eras. Evidently, these photos originally belonged to the families of both Jacob Blander and Abram Warren, and also feature other families connected to the families either by kinship (for example the Hendersons of Illinois or the Bahtis of South Range, Michigan) or friendship. There are also turn-of-the-century photos of members of the Tauren and Huhtelin families in Finland. Photos dating from the mid-20th Century, mostly in the form of framettes, include members of the Warren, Blander, Tauren, and Lassila families in the Keweenaw Peninsula and Detroit. The Margaret Blander Collection contains small black and white photos collected by Margaret Blander. They were, for the most part, saved in one small box. They cover the 1930's and the 1940's and contain many pictures of Margaret's friends and co-workers in Michigan, New York City, and Washington, D.C.

IV. SERIES IV: NEWSPAPER CLIPPINGS Margaret Blander also saved newspaper clippings. They were originally filed with the correspondence in the eight envelopes that make up subseries A through H of the Correspondence Series. The newspaper clippings are filed by family (if the familial relation is apparent), though many clippings document the lives of Margaret Blander's friends and are filed in the Miscellaneous folder, except Esther Cole Franklin, who was a frequent companion of Margaret Blander. An interesting item in this series is a set of three poems (or hymns) that Jacob Blander wrote late in life while living in Florida and published in the 'Valvoja' newspaper. They are in the Finnish language. V. SERIES V: MARGARET BLANDER PERSONAL The Margaret Blander Personal Series contains a variety of additional material that Margaret Blander collected and saved, including her baptismal and confirmation certificates, artifacts from her many jobs, and two invitations from Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt to attend functions at the White House. The series is organized first by importance, with writing as the first subseries. The next seven subseries are in alphabetical order. Closing the Margaret Blander Personal Series are ephemera and then materials saved from her university studies.

SUBSERIES I: Ephemera The Ephemera subseries includes about 0.5 linear feet of programs and playbills from plays and concerts that Margaret Blander attended in Ann Arbor, Detroit, Chicago, Washington D.C., and New York City. These were kept in their original order, though they were filed by Margaret Blander in no apparent order. Margaret Blander also saved many programs, small publications, and other ephemera from political groups with which she was involved. Some of these were originally filed in the correspondence envelopes which comprise subseries A through H of the Correspondence Series. J. SUBSERIES J: University Studies The large quantity of notes, exams, and other materials from Margaret Blander's university studies were kept in their original order and received minimal processing.

The Miscellaneous Series contains items which did not fit into the first five series of the Margaret Blander and Helmi Warren personal papers. However, this series does have some valuable items, such as Jacob and Amanda Blander’s funeral registers and sympathy cards. The Margaret Blander and Helmi Warren family papers were discovered in a home that belonged to Walfrid and Betty (Tauren) Lassila. Betty (Tauren) Lassila evidently inherited an interesting collection of receipts, stock certificates, and other ephemera left by her parents, Carl and Ida (Warren) Tauren, which can be found in the Miscellaneous Series. VII. SERIES VII: BOOKS The Books Series contains mostly items saved by Helmi Warren, some of which were used in the operation of the Finnish Center in Detroit. There are also many turn-of-the-century religious books from the collection of Jacob and Amanda (Warren) Blander. Lastly, there is a Finnish-language Old Testament dating from 1829. The books are organized into ten sub-series by subject. The subseries are arranged alphabetically by subject title, with Miscellaneous filed last. Within each subseries, the books are arranged alphabetically. The inscriptions inside the books are included in the File Unit (folder) list. One item that was not included in the Margaret Blander and Helmi Warren personal papers, and is subsequently missing from this series, but is noteworthy nonetheless, is a book that Helmi Warren wrote in 1941 titled: "English for the Finn" (Detroit: Ralph Baschal & Co. Printing, 1941).
