National Day Celebration 2017

Keppel Club members unite for a patriotic showcase

Our participants reciting the national pledge.

Even the heavens rejoiced along, dousing our land with a light morning shower only to bestow a cool, comfortable afternoon for our golfers to enjoy a good game.

As early as 11.30am, eager

participants started filing in for registration, uniformly clad in symbolic red and white. Soon, it was a sea of red at the flagpole, where Keppel Club President Lai Mun Onn led the staff and some

120 participating members in the national pledge and anthem. Jubilant faces and booming voices, emanating love for Singapore, accompanied the flag’s steady journey up the pole.

An excited crowd of golfers waiting to register before the start of the event.

There’s always time for a selfie! Some of our lady golfers getting in the festive mood.

It was a spectacular sight where participants waited patiently to take to their respective starting holes. Each buggy set off to the cue of a confetti shot “fired” through a mock wooden cannon, totally handmade by a staff member. Uplifting marching music blared from the speakers, adding to the celebratory mood.

The fine weather persisted through to the end of the afternoon’s game, which culminated in a rewarding dinner at Keppel Hall. Members tucked in, clinked glasses and chatted merrily with one another, appreciating the opportunity to gather on such a meaningful occasion.

Asked if she had a good game in the afternoon, Keppel Club’s Newsletter Sub-committee member, Mrs Susie Seow, said: “It doesn’t matter whether I had a good score. More importantly, I am enjoying the time spent here with my friends today.” Doubtless, she had spoken for many others in her midst.

Some fun was injected into the evening when members rushed simultaneously to the stage to answer questions and claim prizes, after watching a video clip on the different historical names of Singapore. The Club could certainly boast about having a good number of spelling bees with superb memory amongst its members.

Finally, it was time for the highlight of the evening – the announcement of the golf results. This year’s competition saw a hole-in-one winner, Mr Henry Ng, in addition to the overall winners, Mr Michael Lee and Mrs Imelda Tan Lean.

On his first hole-in-one victory after 20 years of golfing, Mr Ng, who had previously been the Club’s Newsletter Convenor from 2000 to 2004, shared: “I’m very happy to win the hole-in-one, especially since it occurred in Keppel Club where I got my first local membership in 1991.”

Mrs Tan Lean, the overall winner of the ladies’ category,

was “in shock” even minutes after claiming her prize. An occasional player still recovering from a dislocated arm, she said: “I was conscious not to use my arms too much and too hard to swing the club. I wanted to enjoy the game instead of having to think of strategies to score. I didn’t expect to win at all! Perhaps the KISS (Keep it simple, stupid) mentality I am so used to in my fund management career helped.”

Golfers take heed then: that’s definitely some solid strategy (without the intention of strategies). Try KISSing next time. Who knows, you might just be the next winner.

There’s nothing like confetti and fanfare as our National Day Golf kicks off with a bang!

Mrs Imelda Tan Lean, Ladies’ division winner, is ecstatic over her unexpected win in the event.

Often some of the most memorable holidays are those taken off the beaten track. Away from luxurious hotels, no shopping for luxury goods, no mad rush. Just relaxing in serene, natural surroundings. This is difficult for many a Singaporean traveller to do. But try it, and you will have a whole new world of experience.

For you to take the road less travelled, it’s best you get a friend, a local who knows every nook and cranny, to show you around. These are places no tour guides or coaches will take you to.

One such holiday was a trip my wife and I took to the small, obscure American city of St Augustine in the north of Florida a few years ago. We were fortunate to have as our “tour guide” Nick Chomen, a friend from Hobe Sound, a small coastal city in Florida facing the Atlantic Ocean, who drove us all the way from Orlando where we had spent two weeks, to St Augustine.

St Augustine, touted as the United States’ oldest city, was founded by a Spanish nobleman, Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles, in 1565. The unique bayfront city is filled with colonial Spanish neighbourhoods and magnificent buildings, and has a charm all its own because the whole town is so quaint. The moment you arrive, you are transported into a different world, one with traces everywhere of more than 400 years of history.

Like Hobe Sound, St Augustine has only about 12,000 residents. The heart of the city is its downtown Plaza de la Constitucion. Most of the historic buildings, pretty and majestic till today, are located

Solana, a distinctive inn with warm hospitality, relaxed elegance and homemade Southern breakfasts. Nestled in the heart of the historic district, and set among tropical gardens, banana trees and a walled courtyard, it is one of St Augustine’s oldest inns. The three-storey walk-up building has only 10 guest rooms and suites, but each is unique with different period furnishings.

There are rooms with fireplaced sitting areas or large outdoor sitting areas, shaded balconies, stained glass features and large windows overlooking the historic Aviles Street on which the inn stands. Guests can enjoy the sounds of passing horse-drawn carriages on this street, which is lined with pretty shops, art galleries and restaurants.

While the inn’s owners want to maintain the old world charm, they also recognise that today’s travellers demand comfort, and so the air-conditioner, refrigerator and other modern-day appliances are all in place. And, yes, there’s wi-fi access as well.

Visiting St Augustine? Give the hotels a miss. Stay in any of the 26 inns.

Held at the golf wing, the event was attended by Manpower Minister Lim Swee Say, Education

It’s a pleasure to serve you, dear members, as Keppel Club’s Assistant Communications Manager, newly joined on Aug 1 from the publishing industry. I am honoured to be tasked with putting Keppel Links together, and I hope my prior knowledge of publishing will contribute towards making this newsletter an even more enticing and worthy read than it already is.

In this issue, find out how Keppelites united yet again in demonstrating patriotism for Singapore on Aug 9. This year’s National Day Golf Competition was special, as it witnessed a hole-in-one winner.

On Aug 19, we also welcomed our friends from our reciprocal club, Kelab Golf Negara Subang, in a friendly golf match with Keppel Club. We thank them for travelling all the way from Selangor, Malaysia, and for a great opportunity to catch up through a great game.

This month, we look forward to meeting you at the President’s Trophy 2017 on Saturday, Sept 23, which beckons with an irresistible Lexus IS Turbo F SPORT as the hole-in-one prize. Then, the next opportunity to do good for charity – Keppel Charity Golf 2017 – will be back on Oct 14 and 15, promising a chance to win attractive prizes along with a meaningful golf game to play from the heart, play for a cause.

I hope you will enjoy this issue of Keppel Links, which I put together for the first time. As always, we would be happy to receive your feedback. You may send in your views to: The Editor, Keppel Links, 10 Bukit Chermin Road, Singapore 109918, or to [email protected]

within a block or two to the north and south of the plaza. Although the historic sites can be easily covered by a walking tour, a guided Old Town Trolley Tour, like those in Washington DC and Boston, will enhance your appreciation of the city.

The trolley tour covers more than 100 places of interest and features 20 stops where guests can get on and off to shop, dine or sightsee. They include the Old St Augustine Village, the Old Jail, the Old Drug Store, the Oldest Wooden School House, the Spanish Quarter, St Augustine’s Florida Heritage Museum, the Cathedral Basilica of St Augustine and the City Gates.

A walking tour, however, will bring greater delight to your senses as you wind your way through interesting narrow streets and come face to face with more than 20 historic inns. Rich in old world charm of a bygone era, these beautiful inns – from Spanish-style houses to romantic Victorian bungalows to the US Southern residences – provide gourmet breakfasts in elegant settings.

Keppel Club vs Kelab Golf Negara Subang

Good old times with good old friends

Over the years, Keppel Club and Kelab Golf Negara Subang (KGNS) have established a firm friendship, and members from each club have frequently enjoyed camaraderie. This year, it was Keppel Club’s turn to play host to our northern neighbours, and we ensured that they had a wonderful time here playing the game we know and love.

By Gilbert Wong

A shotgun start at 7.30am meant our hardworking course staff were up and making sure things were in order as early as 4am before the golfers arrived on Saturday morning. The group of more than 90 golfers mingled with one another before the customary group photo prior to tee off, with Keppel’s sea of orange blending in with KGNS’s blue and with our picturesque course as the backdrop.

Once the buggies sped off, it wasn’t long before the dull and grey skies cleared up with warm sunshine streaming in. It was a day filled with fun and laughter and players from both clubs thoroughly enjoyed their time with each other in this friendly competition.

Keppel Club and KGNS golfers gathering before the start of an eventful day.

Before long, the game concluded as lunch was just around the corner. Time certainly flies when you’re having fun! The cool air of Keppel Hall was a welcome change compared to the warmth outside, and the famished participants could not wait to begin digging in to the delectable buffet spread laid before them. Uplifting disco beats from the 70s such as Funky Town, You Should Be Dancing and YMCA filled the air, creating a lively atmosphere for everyone involved.

Once everyone had arrived, Team Captain of KGNS, Dato Hj Ir Mohd Yusof Ismail, made his way to the stage to say a few words, and he voiced his appreciation

for the organisation of the day’s events, adding that “the lunch was fantastic”.

Captain C.S. Kong was up next to give a welcome speech and he highlighted the similarities between both clubs. As both clubs “started as rubber plantations, carved out of natural terrain”, he light-heartedly proclaimed that this made all of them tougher. Captain Kong proceeded to propose a toast to both clubs to celebrate this long friendship we share.

Soon after, prizes for the day’s winners were given out to no shortage of cheers from either side. As the winning pairs walked up to collect their hard-earned prizes, the only thing left on the agenda

Eager golfers from both clubs registering for the event before the sun was fully up.

It was a meeting of not just golfers but friends: from left, Mr Mohd Asnan Samsudin (KGNS), Captain C.S. Kong, Dato Hj Ir Mohd Yusof Ismail (KGNS), President Lai Mun Onn, Mr Joe Lai, Mr Ling Keok Khoon (KGNS), Mr Swaran Singh Bhatt (KGNS) and Vice-Captain Jamil Maksoem.

was to reveal who the overall winners were. With bragging rights on the line, the hall erupted as Keppel Club was declared the winner of this year’s friendly game.

Andre Chong and Callista Chen, current and former Keppel Juniors respectively, took top honours in Singapore Golf Association’s (SGA) recent 2nd National Ranking Game (NRG) held at Raffles Country Club’s Palm Course from July 25 to 27.

By Eddie Chong

Keppelites Andre and Callista take top honours at 2nd NRG 2017

player Joshua Shou and DS player Donovan Lee. However, Joshua started aggressively in the final round with two birdies in the first four holes, while Donovan closed the gap to two strokes behind Andre with a remarkable four-under before he crossed over.

Subsequently Donovan closed the gap to one stroke when Andre bogeyed Hole 10, and Jesse crept to one stroke behind with his birdies on Holes 8, 9 and 11. The strong winds in the final round made the game even more challenging, which might have contributed to Joshua and Donovan bogeying a few holes. Playing consistently bogey-free, Jesse chased hard and closed one stroke behind Andre, who prevailed and

SGA Development Squad (DS) player, Andre Chong, put in a magnificent performance to win this year’s NRG by a narrow margin of one stroke. He had a good start – shooting 67 on day one – and maintained his lead with a remarkable five-under over three days to win the tournament, amidst intense competition. He closed with the final score of 211 (67, 71, 73).

It was particularly rewarding for Andre to attain his best-ever score on the course given the difficult windy conditions. On the final day, he entered the leader flight in the final round of the tournament, five strokes ahead of SGA Elite Squad (ES) player Jesse Yap and six strokes ahead of ES

won the tournament with a one-stroke victory over Jesse.

On the ladies’ front, ES player Callista Chen opened the tournament with a two-over round of 74 on the first day, quickly establishing a five-stroke lead over her nearest challenger. Callista led the tournament on all three days to close with a wire-to-wire win of 233 (74, 78, 71), scoring the only under-par round in the Ladies division. This is an encouraging win for Callista, who is also leading the Singapore Women’s team to the Mines in Kuala Lumpur in August for SEA Games 2017.

Congratulations to Andre and Callista with their latest NRG wins! We hope to see them scale greater heights in the near future.

Keppel Juniors Sean Lee, Justin Kuk and Nicole Mok performed commendably in the Singapore National Amateur Championship 2017 (SNAC), which was held between Aug 14 and 17, 2017.

By Kuk Hun Yi, Green Committee member

Keppel Juniors impress at Singapore National Amateur

As in previous years, SNAC’s format is a combination of stroke play for the first two days to establish the top 16 amateur men players and top eight ladies players to play in subsequent match play competition rounds. The competition venue this year was the Gary Player-designed NSRCC Kranji course.

This year, the top 16 from Men’s division and top eight from the Ladies’ division who qualified for the knockout stages were established from the first round’s stroke play results, as the second round stroke play was washed out by inclement weather. Accordingly, Keppel Juniors Justin Kuk qualified in ninth position with an even par round of 72, Sean Lee qualified in 15th position with a three-over 75, and in the Ladies’ division, Nicole Mok qualified in third position with a four-over 76.

In the round of 16 knockout phase, Sean Lee of the SGA (Singapore Golf Association) Junior Squad created the biggest “upset” of the tournament when he prevailed over Marc Ong, an SGA Elite Squad (ES) player who is representing Singapore in the SEA games. Initially nervous, Sean soon settled down after sinking a long putt to square the first hole. The seesaw battle between Sean and Marc was evident as they were all square at the turn and at the conclusion of 18 holes, necessitating extra holes to be played to break the deadlock. In this match, Sean had to produce an eagle and seven birdies to win, and he finally prevailed on the 20th hole when he stiffed his approach

shot to one foot. The next day, Sean’s run in the tournament finally came to an end when he lost three and two to ES player Joshua Shou in the quarter-finals.

Likewise, Justin Kuk of the SGA Development Squad (DS) prevailed one-up in a tough match over fellow DS squad member, Princeton Yeo, in the round of 16. In the quarter-final round, Justin’s progress was halted by Gregory Foo, Singapore’s top amateur ES player spearheading Singapore’s charge at the upcoming SEA games, who won this match three and one. Determined to make a strong contest of this match, Justin played a tight game without dropping any shots and was in fact leading one-up through to Hole 10. However, the quality of Gregory’s game prevailed in the end when he made a strong charge in the final few holes to end the match on Hole 17.

In the Ladies’ quarter-final knockout round, SGA ES member, Nicole Mok, was unfortunately drawn to meet another Keppel player, former Keppel Junior, Ariel Lee. Ariel prevailed two-up in this match and went on to meet SGA ES player, Sarah Tan, in the semi-finals. Eventual winner Sarah prevailed in the semi-final round four and two over Ariel.

It is heartening to note the impact of Keppel’s junior programme on the Singapore golfing landscape, as a quarter of the Men’s and Ladies’ quarter-finalists in this year’s SNAC were former or present Keppel Juniors. We wish all our Keppel Juniors every success for the future.

Tennis Triangular: Keppel bags Overall titleDue to the absence of The American Club, this year’s Quadrangular was changed to the Triangular, which saw players from Keppel Club, The Tanglin Club and Chinese Swimming Club (CSC) gather at Keppel Club’s courts on Saturday, July 29 for two matches in a single day.

Our Veterans pair comprising Tennis Convenor Kamal Ehsan and Mr Sit Moon Choy, as well as our Ladies pair comprising Ms Denise Seow and Ms Ashley Yim, claimed the Men Senior Veterans Doubles (55 years and above) and Ladies Doubles titles respectively. Keppel Club also bagged the Overall title, elbowing out last year’s winner The Tanglin Club.

Players and officials from the respective clubs expressed their sincere appreciation for a well-organised tennis tournament, which concluded with a dinner and prize presentation at the Sea Scent Pavilion.

We certainly hope for the participation of The American Club next year in Tennis Quadrangular

Keppelites with a strong sense of belonging to Keppel Club surely find the old adage “Charity begins at home” very befitting when it comes to the Club’s annual charity golf event. In 2016, the event raised more than $1-million again, remarkably for the fourth consecutive year, thanks to the combined efforts of our Chairman Fock Siew Wah, generous members, partners and contributors, as well as our dedicated staff.

This year’s Charity Golf will be held on Oct 14 and 15 and it seeks to maintain the over $1-million mark to reach out once more to 10 beneficiaries (the list of which is near finalisation at the time of printing).

Dr Lam Pin Min, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Health and Ministry of Transport, will grace our Charity Golf as the Guest-of-Honour.

The $1,016,513 raised last year benefited 10 beneficiaries: Assisi Hospice, Dyslexia Association of Singapore, Down Syndrome Association, HEB-Ashram Halfway House, Home Nursing Foundation, Lembaga Biasiswa Kenangan Maulud, Muscular Dystrophy Association (Singapore), The Northlight School, Society for the Aged Sick and St Luke’s Hospital.

As in previous years, participants can have a go at a hole-in-one challenge with a very enticing prize, as well as take home golf flights and a range of electrical appliances – refrigerator,

tablet, smart watch and TV, to name just a few – from the Raffle Draw.

In addition, a gala dinner at the end of the event will boast a fine-dining menu to satisfy even the fussiest of food connoisseurs, as well as engaging entertainment by a three-piece jazz band, complete with a female vocalist.

Then, because we were so impressed with the professional female emcee Donna Daniels when she hosted Keppel Club’s We Care 2011, we have decided to invite her back for this year’s event. Expect a jolly good time at the dinner given Daniels’ reputation for being hilarious and innovative in stage games and antics.

Event entry fee: $300 for members, $400 for non-members

Raffle Draw ticket: $10 per ticket

Keppel Golf Charity is not simply a mundane fulfilment of the Club’s Corporate Social Responsibility, nor is it a sole attempt to win prizes: every year the desire to reach out to the less fortunate comes straight from the heart of every individual contributor. This is the true culture that Keppel Club members and staff collectively manifest and uphold.

We certainly look forward to the event taking place next month. Mark it down on your calendar if you haven’t – play from the heart, play for a cause. We will see you soon!

Success for SITA’s summer tennis camp SITA Tennis Academy successfully hosted its first Summer Tennis Camp at Keppel Club over the month of June. The 33 participants, many of whom are already enrolled in the coaching programme at Keppel Club, enjoyed daily themed lessons focusing on technique, tactical development and tennis-based games.

The camp was held over a three-hour period from 9am to 12pm, Monday to Friday, every week in June. The training focus changed from forehands one day to backhands the next day, introducing or developing every shot in tennis during the week. The young players developed their skills through drills, rallies and point play.

Even though the camp was tennis-specific to help players develop their skills and match play, it was suitable for many to participate, as the coaches took care to organise the participants into groups based on their ability level.

Director of Tennis, Stephen Pellow, said: “The camp was a great success because of the children’s positive attitude. Most of them turned up on the first day half asleep, but they became alert once we started warming up and gently easing them into some basic drills.

“The children really listened and tried their best to follow the correct techniques. I was extremely happy to see their enthusiasm and passion for tennis grow as the week progressed, and they couldn’t wait to participate in the next holiday camp.”

Dates for future tennis camps at Keppel Club are stated below. For more information, please contact Stephen Pellow at [email protected].

• September 4 to 8 • October 16 to 20 • October 23 to 27

It was a bright and sunny day as some of SITA’s students enjoyed competitive games on the courts during the summer camp.
