RE: 2020 KYGWA Trade Show

Hello friends! It’s that time of the year again! The Kentucky Ground Water Association Trade Show will be held on

February 27-28, 2020 at the Holiday Inn – Louisville East Hurstborne, the same location as last year. The address for

Holiday Inn is 1325 S. Hurstbourne Parkway, Louisville, Ky. and their phone number is (502) 426-2600. The hotel will

have a block of rooms reserved for the KYGWA until February 12th, 2020. Make sure to mention you are with the

KYGWA to get your discounted room rate. After February 12th, room specials will be gone.

If you haven’t already registered for this year’s show, please do so quickly. It will help you get signed in quicker at the

show and it will be very helpful for the registration volunteers. The pre-registration deadline is February 7th, 2020 and

the fee is $125/person. This covers your KYGWA membership and the trade show registration. If you don’t get pre-

registered, the cost after February 7th will be $175/person, including registrations on the day of the show. If you bring a

spouse or friend not wanting CEU hours, the cost for them is $65/person, which covers the cost for them to attend the

show and to be able to eat from the buffet.

One of the big changes in our trade show this year will be the addition of more CEU hours. Kentucky has changed their

laws to allow for driller’s assistants. This basically allows newer drillers the opportunity to drill water wells and/or

monitor wells without being a state licensed driller. They will still be drilling under the direct supervision of a state

licensed driller, but the licensed driller is not required to be onsite during the drilling operations. The driller assistant is

also required to pass the state water well and/or monitor well test, but not required to pass the NGWA test. They will

be required to obtain 8 hours of CEU hours per year. With this change for the state, our trade show will offer up to 8

CEU hours as required for the driller’s assistant. In the past, the show has only offered up to 6 CEU hours. This is a big

change for our state and for our trade show!

Please come prepared and ready to bid at our annual auction, benefitting the KYGWA Scholarship Fund, following dinner

on Thursday night. Our vendors, along with other generous folks, always bring some really nice items to bid on. Please

remember the money goes for such a great cause!

Please visit our website www.kygwa.org for information on the hotel including room specials, class schedule and more.

If you have any questions or concerns about the trade show, classes/schedules, hotel questions, etc., please contact

Amos Moses. His cell number is (606) 521-4783 or you can email him at [email protected].

We are excited to see everyone at this year’s trade show! It should be a great show and we thank you for being part of

it!

Sincerely,

The KYGWA Team

High Resolution Characterization and Remediation of Petroleum-Impacted Carbonate Aquifers in Kentucky Michael Albright, KY DWM Many UST sites in Kentucky are located within the four distinct karst areas underlying the Commonwealth. Karst geomorphology and hydrogeology create unique challenges to effectively characterizing contaminant location and extent as well as characterizing flow dynamics at these sites. Traditional characterization of UST releases in karst terrain involves the initial collection of soil samples (saturated and unsaturated) and groundwater samples from the water table aquifer. Monitoring wells are often installed in rock without adequate knowledge of the karst geomorphology and hydrogeology specific to the point of installation. Monitoring wells thus installed typically provide insufficient information regarding contaminant mass in the epikarst, in solution-enhanced fractures, and in well-developed karst conduits. To address this insufficiency, surface geophysical methods such as two-dimensional electrical resistivity imaging, refraction micro tremor, frequency domain electromagnetic conductivity, and low-frequency electromagnetics are used to identify potential bedrock monitoring well locations. Once the borehole is established, geophysical methods, including caliper, gamma log, borehole resistivity, optical televiewer, acoustic televiewer, and heat-pulse flowmeter are employed. Combining these methods increases well-placement efficiency, which supports effective site characterization and remediation. Church Hill Room
