KENT PETANQUE ASSOCIATION
ISSUE No.86 AUGUST 2013

REPORT BY MIKE CUBITT
The annual Mayor of Gravesham’s charity
petanque competition, sponsored by Eu-
rostar and Wells and Young, was held at
Gravesend Rugby Club’s new international
sized pistes. The event held on Sunday
28 July, to raise funds for the Mayor’s
charities which this year include Cancer
Research and the House of Mercy in
Edwin Street Gravesend.
Players travelled from as far afield as
Leicester, Portsmouth, Lancing, Cardiff
and Brighton, as well as from Gravesend
and around Kent to take part in the all
day tournament, organised by Gravesend
Rugby Club Petanque Section.The players,
who included current and past County,
Regional and International players, made
up teams to play a series of league
games in the morning, with the top
eight going through to gold
leagues and the remainder into
silver leagues for the afternoon.
Closely fought games in the Gold
leagues pushed the time schedule
back by two hours, one of the
leagues was decided by two points
out of thirty-nine, while in the
other three of the teams finished
with two wins apiece but points
difference put “Mad 1” into the
final. continued
KPA GAZETTE Page 2
Some tight competition in the af-
ternoon resulted in “Mad 1”, Dean
Seville, Sam Blakey and Chris Peel,
getting through to the gold final
where they were eventual victors
over “Hash Browns”,Steve Brown,
Scott Ashby and Dean Ashby, by
the odd end in a keenly contested
game. Prize was a triple travel
voucher on Eurostar valued at over
£550, runners-up received Cham-
pagne flutes and of course the bub-
bly to fill them.
The silver final saw the local
“Dragons”, Mike Capelin, Debbie
Capelin and Peter Isles, from Maidstone, gain a narrow victory over “Early Risers” from
Croydon, Kathleen Herbert, Paul Rasell and Adrian Cowe. The winners shared six bottles
of wine and a dozen glasses with the runners-up also taking home six.
Overall, fifty per-cent of the players went away with a prize from the days play as all the
afternoon leagues runners-up also collected a few bottles each.
The Worshipful the Mayor of Gravesham, Councillor Derek Sales and his lady Mayoress
attended to watch some of the play during the closing stages of the competition and pre-
sent prizes to some the winning teams.
Event director Mike Cubitt said “that for the fourth year the whole event was an enjoya-
ble one, and was now a regular event on the calendar for both the council and Gravesend
Rugby Club. In the future we would hope to be able to attract more teams to take part.
What was very refreshing to see was the gold final was played between two teams where
all the players were in their
early twenties and I have no
doubt that some of them
will be wearing the England
shirt in the future.”
With Eurostar sponsoring
the main prize, it helped
with our aim to raise funds
for the Mayor’s Charities,
and to this end I am pleased
to be able to pass over
£400.

THE TALE OF A RETIRED PETANQUER
A few months ago, retired Kent
petanque player KEN PINDER of
Ryarsh….and his wife...upped
sticks, “no by your leave”….and
shot off around the world. Some
sort of elderly hippie thing….an
OAP gap year. Ex player of Gravesend Rugby Club
Petanque and latterly founder member of the “Duke of Wellington P.C.” at Ryarsh was
soon to discover the limitation of his “free bus pass” ended at Heathrow….but neverthe-
less continued on his journey out of Blighty…...he has kindly contacted the Gazette with
details of his story…. so far.
A Petanque Paradise. BY KEN PINDER
We arrived late at night to our Hotel in Phuket, Thailand, so had to wait until the next morning
to pull back the curtains. Spread out before us was the pool surrounded by Palm trees, be-
yond that the white sandy beach and not more than ten meters from both was a Petanque
piste with lights and a very challenging sandy surface. Could you imagine anything more per-
fect – sun 30+ degrees , sea like bath water but, and the only but, was humidity of 96 percent,
steamy hot. We were sharing this Paradise with, in the first week, Marcello & Margaret Mori,
ex DOWPC and to attend the wedding of their son. In the second ten days we were joined by
Rob & Corinne Heywood, GRFC and The George. So lots of time for practise only interrupted
by happy hour cocktails and watching the most amazing sunsets. It’s a hard life for us ancient
gap year Pensioners.
I was practising on the piste one morning and a guy stood on the side watching intently. I
asked him if he wanted to have a try and he joined me . We went through the introduction for-
malities he was Franz from Stuttgart, Hungarian, and a Dentist by profession. My normal in-
stincts of “wow chance of starting another player took over” I explained the basics and off we
went. He was a natural and we spent many hours playing and explaining the finer points of the
game. We swapped details and he looked up his local club in Germany and said he was going
to join and play seriously. Felt quite pleased about that. We had four days in Bangkok – wow
what a bustling vibrant City. Traffic bumper to bumper and no trucks allowed on the roads until
after midnight. We saw all the sites, Grand Palace and the reclining golden Buddha. Had a
cocktail up on the Sky Dome overlooking the City. We used public transport to get around,
Sky Train, Ferries, Water busses , Water Taxis, Tuk Tuks, a kind of motor bike with seats on a
flat bed behind, but drew the line at Taxi Mopeds.
Thai people are the friendliest on earth and the most industrious too. Every square inch of available retail space is taken up by people trying to earn a living. A great Country – will cer-tainly return one day.
We flew from Bangkok to Sydney and stayed with Marcello and Margaret and played with the
Mauritian ex pats Petanque Club, but more about this later. Keeping in touch with all the

lunchtime burgers. Other Teams taking home the money were Team DENE ASHBY,
STEVE GOLDER and STEVE BROWN with £45 as the Main runners-up…..Team JOYCE
NASH, MICK NASH and AARON NASH with £15 as Main Semi-Finalists…...Team named

MEADOW PC’s
EURO CUP
REPORT
On Friday 26th July a
party of 12 members
from the Meadow PC
set off from Dover on
the 10am ferry to Dun-
kirk en-route to Brussels
to take part in the
Confédération Eu-
ropéenne de Pétanque’s
(CEP) EuroCup for
clubs.
The Meadow PC quali-
fied for the event by vir-
tue of winning the
EPA’s EuroCup compe-
tition earlier in the year.
The Meadow were
drawn with four other teams into group “A”. With 3 teams to qualify from each group the odds of pro-
gressing looked favourable. However our opposition included two former European Club Champions
along with a very strong Swiss club. Realistically this meant that our whole tournament would probably
all come down to our ‘head to head’ with the Swiss.
A summary of the teams:
Belgium - Royal Joli Bois (Brussels) Belgian club champions 11 times in the past 18 years This was their 8th appearance in the EuroCup.
EuroCup winners in 2006 and third in 2005, 2011 and 2012 and the seeded team in our group.
Monaco - Club Bouliste Monegasque
Monaco's EuroCup representatives for the past 10 years EuroCup winners in 2011 and third in 2010.
Switzerland - Pointers Meyrin Petanque
Switzerland's EuroCup representatives in 2001 and 2007. Reached the second round on both occasions.
Norway - Oslo PC
Norway's first venture into the EuroCup so Oslo were an unknown quantity.
The short name competition for a longed name competition is the
EURO-CUP, that comprises preliminary rounds throughout European
Countries with each country sending their winning clubs to the fi-
nals…….in Brussels. This year the club and team representing Eng-
land and the E.P.A. were MEADOW P.C.
Coincidentally the first round of the 2013/2014 Euro-Cup competition are to start during
this month of August…..organised by Kent’s DAVID BAXTER.
So to the Finals…...for 2012/13……….MARK COOTER of MEADOW P.C. has kindly provided
a report that will prove to be of interest .

England – Meadow PC
Previously represented England/Great Britain (as the Plough & Chequers) on four occasions.
The Squad included: Nic Baxter, Corinne Cooter, Jennifer Cooter, Greg Davenport, Marcus Hickman,
Angie Jamieson, Lee Jamieson, Rowland Jones, Kevin Spillett, Richard Spillett (Team Captain), Tracy
Turner and Mark Cooter (Head of Delegation).
We arrived at the playing venue at around 5pm in good time for the scheduled 8pm start, having stopped
off at our hotel en-route. Making the most of their home advantage our hosts would not let anyone onto
the indoor terrain, where the matches were due to take place, prior to the allotted start time so practice
was taken on the outdoor pistes, which were quite different to those indoors.
The (indoor) pistes were typical for World and European events being firm underfoot with a fair scatter-
ing of large stones to make it imperative to pick and hit your landing spot. However it was the heat and
humidity that had the most detrimental effect on our players.
The allotted start time came and went before the official welcome and team introductions, complete with
National anthems, took place around 9:15pm.
Round 1 - Friday evening :
Round 1 was due to consist of Belgium v Norway and England v Switzerland but Norway had not ar-
rived so Belgium were awarded a walk- over while England v Switzerland took over the whole venue.
In the opening games our Open Triple were slow to get started and we lost a quick game to 2 points. The
Mixed Triples was much closer. Meadow coming back from behind to lead 9-8 but were unfortunate to
eventually lose out. A better performance in the pairs saw Meadow pull back 2 games but the Swiss won
the deciding double to take the match point.
England v Switzerland Scores (Meadow scores first):
Open Triple : 2—13 Mixed Triple : 9-13 Open Double 1 : 2-13 Open Double 2 : 13-10
Mixed Doubles : 13-4
The match didn’t finish until way after midnight but even at this late hour the temperature indoors was
still into the 30’s but it was the high humidity that took its toll despite the team drinking copious
amounts of cold water and soft drinks before and during the matches.
Round 1 Results: Beligium v Norway 5-0 (walk over) and England v Switzerland 2-3
SATURDAY 27th JULY
Round 2 - Saturday morning:
As Meadow had drawn a bye we enjoyed a lay-in before arriving at the piste just after noon for a prac-
tice ahead of the 2pm start.
Round 2 Results: Belgium v Switzerland 3-2 and Norway v Monaco 0-5
Round 3 – Saturday afternoon:
Norway had arrived in Brussells at 2am in the morning following a nightmare trip from Oslo where they
encountered cancelled flights and missing coaches. However they had appeared to have gotten over their
ordeal by the time they played Meadow but apart from a close Mixed Triples game Meadow were un-
troubled and ran out 5-0 winners.
England v Norway Scores (Meadow scores first):
Open Triple 13-3 Mixed Triple 13-12 Open Double 1 13-8 Open Double 2 : 13-1 Mixed Doubles 13-7
Round 3 Results: Belgium v Monaco 2-3 and Norway v England 0-5
Round 4 – Saturday evening:
Belgium were still smarting from their defeat against Monaco in the previous round and were even more
annoyed when Meadow comfortably won against their No.1 triple. The Mixed Triple was also fiercely
contested but Belgium ran out winners to even the round. Two closely contested games in the doubles
could have seen Meadow pull off a surprise victory against a star studded Belgian team but sadly it
wasn’t to be as Belgium dug deep to win all three games.
England v Belgium Scores (Meadow scores first):
Open Triple : 13-7
Mixed Triple : 8-13
Open Double 1 : 7-13
Open Double 2 : 4-13
Round 4 Results: Belgium v England 4-1 and Switzerland v Monaco 5-0

SUNDAY 28th JULY.
Round 5 - Sunday morning:
Meadow were up early and off to the venue for a practice before the 9am start. For Meadow to qualify
we either needed Norway to pull off a shock win against Switzerland (unlikely as they had yet to win a
single game) or for Meadow to pull off an equally surprising win against the extremely talented Monaco
squad. Meadow were slow to get started in the opening triples games and were punished as Monaco
were ruthless in their efficiency pulling off two quick ‘fannies’. After a stern team talk and a couple of
substitutions the doubles commenced with Meadow winning the first points in all three games to some
ironic cheers. Meadow then continued to build on those leads. With the scores at 9-3, 9-5 and 4-0 re-
spectively to Meadow Monaco began ‘taking stick’ from their army of team mates and supporters and
stepped up their games. However Meadow very professionally held their nerve and Monaco were forced
into shooting the coche in a couple of ends to try and save the matches before Meadow won both Open
Triples. Sadly we just missed out on the Mixed Doubles and a famous victory.
England v Monaco Scores (Meadow scores first):
Open Triple 0-13 Mixed Triple 0-13 Open Double 1 13-10 Open Double 2 13-12 Mixed Doubles 9-13
Round 5 Results: Norway v Switzerland 1-4 and England v Monaco 2-3
However
Initial thoughts immediately after
the event were that we had
missed an opportunity to progress
in the competition.We took
games off all three qualifying
teams and in each case had the
opportunity to take an extra game
off each of them.
However we also took some notable scalps and earned lots of positive comments from our opponents
and the hosts who commented that we “were a credit to our Association”. We actually won more games
than the Swiss but crucially lost out on ‘head to head’ matches.Everyone of the Meadow squad per-
formed well over the weekend but it would also be fair to say that all struggled at some point during
their games. It was a very good ‘work out’ against some classy opposition for the four England 1 players
ahead of the European Championships in October.
My top performances of the weekend were:
Veteran Lee Jamieson and Tracy Turner against ex World Junior Champion Jeremy Pardoen and Emilie
Bacquet in the Mixed Doubles match against Belgium. The girls matched each other point for point and
Lee was inspired matching Jeremy
shot for shot and carreau for car-
reau, each with a 90% plus hit rate
and the match could have swung
either way.
Rowland Jones and Nic Baxter
against Monaco 1. Almost certain-
ly both players best game of the
weekend for this undefeated pair-
ing. Most ends saw them shooting
and hitting 4-5 boule along with
some inspired pointing to run out
winners 13-10.
Most of the costs were met by the
players themselves but we would
like to extend our thanks to the
EPA and KPA who both supported
the club with financial contribu-
tions.

“how-do-they-do-it” ? Often wondered how bars, cafes, and ex-pats in

Latest news relating to the RAILWAY INN at SOLE STREET is
that DAVE LITTLEY will be taking over the management of the
pub on Thursday 22 August. A crowded and lively petanque night at
the Villager Pub Vigo Village on Wednesday 21st was the setting when the
players heard the news. DAVE has run the Villager for several years with the help
of his family, and is a long time supporter, player and some time benefactor of petanque
in Kent…...so good news all round. Not least for the RAILWAY P.C. who will be returning to
their home in the very near future after playing their league matches temporarily at the
Villager.
The RAILWAY INN is a typical Kent country pub…….and a few years ago had an excellent
reputation for it’s restaurant. Early days…..but could be possible that DAVE will be resur-
recting the restaurant.
DAVE is a very hospitable and successful manager of the Villager and there is no reason
that his experience and expertise should not continue at the RAILWAY INN…...good luck
to the new venture from Kent Petanque players.
