With the summer already a distant memory, this issue is packed with activities for the upcoming half term, healthy lunch suggestions and great parks for blustery autumn days. And all are independently written by Medway parents.

The value of this local parent-to-parent information was brought home to me this summer.

Part way through a cheap and cheerful holiday camping in Devon I caught up with another mum who lived locally. As any regular visitor to the West country will know - it rains a lot. Not just showers, but torrential downpours for days on end. So before leaving Medway I had Googled cheap days out for wet days.

I proudly listed my planned outings only to be meet with groans and comments such as “oh, don’t – it’s a complete waste of money”. She then gave me a local mum's view of the best places to visit. Even better was that these were often the cheaper, less well-known options so we avoided the crowds, saved money and enjoyed a greater variety of activities.

It reminded me how useful it was to have another parent’s opinion rather than relying on the hype. And this is what we try to achieve in each issue of Kent Mama – using our local knowledge and that of other parents, we give you unbiased information and advice about things-to-do, places-to-go and help and support for families in the Medway and mid-Kent area. I hope you enjoy it!

Mote Park, MaidstoneMote Park is one of those parks that makes you wish you were a kid again. From the giant swing bed that easily fi ts three, to the trampolines in the fl oor and ergonomically designed climbing equipment, it can make even the most jaded parent think ‘wow’. If you haven’t been for a while, there is now a skate park and mini climbing wall in an area for older kids adjacent to the children’s play area. And there's a new zip line in the main play area. Ample free parking is available close to the park so you can pop in for an hour of fun on the play equipment or stay all day and take in the beautiful walks through the park and the café, lake and picnic areas. The park also holds regular events, such as the upcoming Maidstone Mela and sporting acitivies for kids in the holidays.

and members of the local community in the design.

Hillyfi elds is situated on Forge Lane, just off Church Street and the Strand Park

roundabout. The design refl ects the growing trend

to use natural materials and equipment that stretches

and challenges children and encourages them to

climb, balance and use their imagination. As well as swings and slides, there are

mounds, bridges, tunnels and climbing nets. Great

for a short visit or combine with the nearby Strand Park for a long day out.

St Johns, Tunbridge WellsSituated on Beltring Road, off the

main road between Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge. Recently

refurbished, the park boasts something for everyone. Younger

children will enjoy the enclosed play area and sand pits. Plenty of

benches and covered seating allow you to watch over them. For older

kids there’s a multi-ball court, tennis courts and skate park. Nearby café

Bean serves delicious milkshakes in every fl avour imaginable.

Lower Leas Coastal Park, FolkestoneThe largest free children’s adventure playground in the southeast, the Lower Leas Coastal Park in Folkestone is a stone's throw away from the beach and lovely walks along the seafront and through beautiful landscaped gardens. The park has a wooden fort, pirate ship, zip lines and mini diggers, to name but a few. Great for blasting the cobwebs away with some sea air and free fun.

GIRL GUIDESAt the fi rst Scouts Rally in 1909, a group of girls turned up. They represented hundreds of other girls insisting that they wanted to be Scouts too. While many parents at the time would have considered camping, hiking and similar activities to be unladylike, Lord Baden Powell had an idea to form a separate organisation for girls so that they could work towards self-development independently of the boys. The Girl Guide movement remains single sex and is split into the following age three groups:

Rainbows: Aged between fi ve and seven, a girl can become a Rainbow at any time after her fourth birthday. The emphasis is on having fun. Rainbows play lots of games, cook and make crafts.

Brownies: After their seventh birthday, girls move up to Brownies. Brownies belong to a pack and work in small groups called Sixes.

Guides: Between the ages of 10 and 14 girls become Guides. Being a Guide is all about learning new skills and making decisions. Guiding can provide a safe environment to explore new possibilities and achieve personal goals.

SCOUTSThe Scouts

started as a camping adventure with 20 boys

in 1907. As interest grew, the Scouts Movement developed

rapidly. In 1991, the whole Movement was opened up to girls

who now account for more than 14% of Scouts.

Beavers: Children can join Beavers from the

three months leading up to their sixth birthday up to the age of eight

and a half. They undertake activities

and can earn activity badges in subjects

such as safety, healthy eating, and

adventure.

Cubs: Between the ages of seven

and a half and eight and a half Beavers progress

to Cub Scouts. Cubs try a greater variety of activities like swimming, music, computing

and collecting. There are 35 activity badges to refl ect their

growing abilities. Some Cub packs organise days out and the

all-important camping trips.

Scouts: Scouts are for boys and girls aged 10 to 14.

Medway Children’s Trust is a local partnership that brings together all the organisations working with children, young people and families to make sure they provide the best possible services.

Medway Council and NHS Medway lead Medway Children’s Trust, but work closely with other organisations like the police, schools, local probation boards, youth offending teams, Connexions partnerships and the Learning and Skills Council for England. The trust's objective is that all children in Medway are safe and cared for, succeed in learning and thrive. They will all be working together to ensure that all children, whatever their background and age have all their needs met so they are healthy; stay happy; enjoy life and achieve well at school and college and in their adult lives and make a positive contribution to society and have fi nancial stability.

It will be involved in the interests of every child and young person until they’re 19; all young people leaving local authority care until they’re 21 (or 25 if they are in full-time education) and young people with learning disabilities until they are 25 years old.

All of the work of Medway Children’s Trust will involve user forums which will including local parents and carers, children and young people (called Young Commissioners), voluntary groups, communities and schools.

The Young Commissioners will tell the board what they think about its plans and offer ideas and suggestions about what they would like improved in Medway.

A team of Young Inspectors have also been recruited to monitor the work of children’s services in Medway that are provided by the council, NHS Medway, Kent Police in Medway, schools, colleges and the voluntary and community sector.

A new partnership has promised to make sure every child in Medway has the best start in life.

Chairman of Medway Children’s Trust and Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Children’s Services Cllr Les Wicks said: “The children’s trust is very signifi cant for Medway.

“The trust brings together all those who have a major infl uence on the lives of all our children and young people. Anyone from birth to 19 will benefi t from the new set up.

“Working together in partnership, the council, health, education, police, voluntary and private sectors will work together to make improvements in young people’s lives.

“We will be listening carefully to what our children and young people say and will be responding to their needs. I am proud to be chairman and through the trust I hope we can give children and young people the best start in life.”

The Children and Young People’s Plan is the trust’s promise to deliver these services and to make sure children and young people are safe, cared for, succeed in learning and thrive. Read a copy online at www.medwaychildrenstrust.co.uk

sTandard assessmenT TesTs (saTs) Are given at the end of year 2 (children aged 6 to 7) and year 6 (ages 10-11 years). They show your child’s progress compared with other children born in the same month, both within their class and compared to a national average.

year 2 saTsThese take place at the end of year 2 before children move up from infants to juniors. The national curriculum is split into Key Stages. Key Stage 1 refers to the subjects children learn in

Year 1 and 2 so these SATS are sometimes referred to

as KS1 SATS. In Year 2 the SATS assess

their abilities in maths and

English.

While this all sounds rather daunting, the

teachers work hard to make the Year 2 SATS as

stress-free as possible. The results are 100% teacher-assessed. And although they take place at a specified week, usually in May, the children will often be unaware that they are being tested as worksheets and observation are very similar to their normal school routine. As the assessments take place near the end of

Testing Times

term, the results will often be given to parents with the end-of-year school report or at parents evening.

year 6 saTsYear 3 – 6 of primary school is known as Key Stage 2. The year 6 SATS test their knowledge of maths, English and science. At this stage the exams are more formal, with test papers being sent away to be marked independently and returned in time for results to be available

before your child leaves primary school in July.

Secondary schools can use the SATS results as an indicator of your child’s ability in order to place them in the appropriate ability group. However it’s not a universal method and some secondary schools don’t grade pupils by ability for some time or they use a whole wealth of other factors including teacher assessment and their own tests and observations.

Extra HelpIf you want to help support your child at school or in a specific exam there are a wealth of online resources for parents and children. Including the excellent www.bbc.co.uk/schools which has advice for parents and fun learning games for children.

If you don’t have access to these, your child’s teacher will be more than happy to give you advice and guidance on helping your child. Parental support and encouragement have proven to play a large part in helping your child achieve their best in school.

The 11+ can be daunting, so prepare your child by working though past papers whilst timing them. Many bookshops, such as WH Smiths sell past papers or you can buy them online. Letts publishes a great series of 10-minute tests and Bond or nfernelson are popular choices for 11+ past papers.

Another option is to consider tutoring. This can be particularly useful in an area such as the 11+ where an experienced tutor can help with exam technique and coach your child in the specific subjects for that exam.

Inge Watson of Kip McGrath tuition centre in Walderslade recommends finding a tutor that has experience of teaching as well as subject knowledge. She says “if your child is spending time with a tutor, chose a reputable tutor that is CRB checked. Ideally they should currently be employed by a school, so that they have a working knowledge of the up-to-date curriculum and methods of teaching. You don’t want your child confused by being taught differently to the terminology and methods they use at school.” With regard to 11+ tuition Inge recommends a little and often approach but with a health warning! “The 11+ is not for everyone. Grammar schools are looking for the top 23%, if your child doesn’t fit into that, they may be more comfortable being in the top group in a comprehensive school rather than the bottom of a grammar school. Tutoring for the 11+ is best started in year 4 or 5, one session a week for a year is far better than cramming in lots of sessions a month before. Any tutoring is going to be useful to your child so take a long term view and see tutoring as a positive bonus.”

The Medway Test (11+)The Medway Test is not compulsory. Parents are sent details at the start of Y6 about choices for secondary school. Selective schools (grammar schools) require that children pass the 11+ in order to be considered for entry. So the exam is only relevant if you feel your child has the ability and desire to go to grammar school. It is important to remember that Medway has an excellent range of schools offering a diverse pattern of specialisms, and parents should look at all available opportunities before making a decision.

The Medway Test is designed to identify the highest-achieving 25% of Y6 children in each year. Recently, the test has been held in the autumn at several centres throughout Medway. It consists of three 50-minute papers: English, maths and verbal reasoning. There is no set pass mark, instead once the test has been marked the top 23% of scores are calculated. Any children from outside Medway and those borderline cases which have appealed successfully are included. A further 2% of children are identified this way, which brings the figure to 25%.

WhaT The saTs resulTs meanlevel 1 average for a typical 5 year old level 2 average for a typical 7 year old level 3 average for a typical 9 year old level 4 average for a typical 11 year old level 5 average for a typical 13 year old

Maidstone Museum invites you to ‘Cut it Out’ at their Big

Draw event. Make a giant animal and plant collage by folding and

tearing paper. The piece of mega art will go into an exhibition of

work. The free event takes place on Wednesday 28th October 10:30am

–12:30pm and 1.30-3.30pm.

Events are also on at Bedgebury Pinetum, the Horsebridge Arts

Centre in Whitstable, The Cube Art Centre in Folkestone and Kent Life near Maidstone.

Drawing GameYou need at least three of you to do this. Each take a piece of paper and draw a head. Fold where the neck ends so that you can’t see what you have drawn and pass it to the next person. Now draw a body and fold the paper just above the waist. The next person draws the legs and feet. Then unfold your paper to reveal your mixed-up creature. For more participants, add extra folds and features.

Doodling did you know?Scribbling away at mini pictures and shapes - doodling - can be good for you. Apparently, if you doodle while you are being told information you are more likely to remember it, and drawing and listening shows that your brain is working and alert!

Why should We WaTch WhaT kids eaT?Children need plenty of calories and nutrients to help them grown and develop properly. Lots of snack foods marketed at children are particularly high in energy and contain few nutrients. These foods tend to be really high in fat, sugar, salt and additives, associated with many health problems such as childhood obesity and dental decay.

We hear abouT food groups, calories, faT, salT and carbs. WhaT should parenTs be looking aT When Trying To achieve a balanced dieT for Their children?I always encourage parents with children over the age of two to use the eatwell plate. This shows a plate divided into portions, in much the same way as a dinner plate is typically split into meat, veg and potatoes. Parents can look at the food they are serving their children over the course of a day or two and see if the proportions match those on the eatwell plate. Foods such as rice, bread, potatoes and pasta should make up a large part of their diet. Fruit and vegetable should make up another large chunk of their daily intake. Dairy products such yoghurts, milk and cheese and proteins like meat, fish, eggs and beans should make up some of the diet. And finally a small amount, can be food or drinks that are high in fat and/or sugar.

hoW has school food changed over The pasT feW years?School diners are now much healthier and nutritious so if you opt for them you know your child will be getting a balanced meal. They use less processed foods and more fresh ingredients.

packed lunch ideasl Use a starchy base such as bread, bagel, baguette or pita bread. Thicker slices will fill up a hungry child and provide the energy they need.

l Add a protein filling of ham, tuna or cheese or try being more adventurous with fillings such as banana, hummous, grated carrot or sliced egg. Add some salad such as lettuce and cucumber with the filling.

l For a change from sandwiches, use left over rice or pasta to make a salad. Add chopped dried fruit, orange segments, finely chopped pepper, cucumber, peas or sweetcorn. Add some tinned tuna, salmon, chicken or ham and mix with a little oil, low-fat salad dressing or mayonnaise.

Tuck TimeMake your own colourful fruit bags or mini boxes with a few segments of Satsuma, grapes and dried fruit. You can do the same with vegetable sticks of cucumber, carrots, red pepper or cherry tomatoes, which can be dipped into hummous or low-fat cream cheese. Made in advance, these will last for a few days in the fridge.

Instead of chocolate bars and cake bars try:l Fruit dippers: cocktail sticks with chunks of pineapple or melon to dip in yoghurt. l Hot cross bun, fruit bread, fruit scone, malt loaf, or banana bread as a lower-fat alternative to cake.l Mini blueberry muffin or scotch pancake. l Low fat rice pudding, custard or jelly pots.l A small portion of flapjack, oat cookie or carrot cake.

l If you have a child that likes to pick at different bits, put together their own version of a ploughman’s with a roll or oatmeal crackers, cubed cheese, ham or cold chicken.

l Drinks such as milkshakes, smoothies and fruit juice provide a good source of vitamins and minerals. But only serve them with food. Between meals opt for tooth-friendly options such as water or semi-skimmed milk.

NB. Keeping food cool is extremely important when it comes to packed lunches;l Use a freezer block or,l Freeze individual items of food such as sandwiches or cartons of juice which can defrost slowly until ready to use at lunchtime.

Dust off your dancing shoes! A new dance class helping you to get fi t and have fun is launching this September in Medway. Founder Sue Wybrow says: “Us mums are continually on the go, but when I wanted to join a fi tness class, I couldn’t fi nd anything that fi tted with my interests and my time. I just wanted to learn some dance routines to pop music from the 80s, 90s and modern day, and have some ‘me’ time. Re-live my youth a bit! So I started Popdance in January this year with just one class. It has proved so popular that it has now grown to 11 classes throughout the South East and is expanding all the time.” Launching at Dance Junction this September, Popdance offers a free taster session, after which classes are £5 per session. For more information visit www.popdance.co.uk, call 07888 704889 or email [email protected].

Want to fi nd out about local jobs in childcare? Ideas for after-school activities? Or details of support groups for parents in Medway? This September, Medway Family Information has launched a new online resource providing families with children aged 0-20 with a wealth of local and national information. Covering everything from money matters to positive activities, the online directory is split into zones for different users.

The Parents Zone provides information about family support, childcare, careers help, training, fun things for children to do and more. The aim is to ensure that parents have access to high-quality services, which can help them make the most out of the local area and improve their family life.

Helping to support practitioners to deliver the very best advice and services that they can, the Practitioners Zone contains links, organisations and practitioner resources, as well as organisations to refer people to if they require help beyond the brief offered by their organisation.

Whatever they are looking for, from advice on dealing with bullying and exam stress to the latest skate park, the directory offers Young People Information about clubs, leisure activities, support groups, disability and leaving home. The directory is also linked to MIXIT, another resource for young people in Medway.

To search the directory, visit www.medwayfi sd.com. For information via telephone contact Medway Family Information Service on 01634 335566 or email [email protected]

Turn junk into artAn innovative new scheme has recently launched in Medway to turn everyday junk into an arts and craft resource for local nursery and school children. The Council’s Early Years and Childcare Professional Development team is collecting unwanted card, paper and materials for a new scrap store at its Centre adjacent to Bligh Way Primary School. “Everyday household items like curtains can be cut up and used to make dressing-up clothes, covers for den making and resources for story sacks, while paper can be used for drawing, painting and book making.” Donations have come in from businesses, organisations and parents, but they need a constant supply to make the scheme work. If you have any clean, unused paper and card, clean material, such as tablecloths, curtains, tea towels, or anything else that may be suitable for children to use then contact Petra on 01634 331488.

Proud to be PregnantIf you want to show off your bump in style this autumn Pregalicious is the place to visit. Situated in the heart of the Royal Star Arcade in Maidstone it offers a friendly and relaxed atmosphere to shop in style. An independent shop, it has a wide range of top name brands in maternity and nursing wear at affordable prices and staff who know their stock. Says owner Lisa Skinner: “A big part of our business is bra purchasing. We offer a free maternity and nursing bra fitting service which is extremely popular and we now stock both Anita and Bravado bras.

When I was pregnant myself I found it extremely difficult to find reasonably priced and stylish maternity wear and so the shop was born. We sell products online via our website but the big advantage for local mums-to-be is that they can come into the shop and try things on. Women’s bodies come in all shapes and sizes and we can offer expert advice on buying the right clothes to fit your growing bump. We have our fantastic autumn stock arriving all the time including beautiful maternity dresses and nursing tops from Swedish range Bara Glad.”

The shop has a calm and relaxed atmosphere with lots of local information for parents-to-be, a quiet corner to breastfeed and an area for small children to play while you shop. Visit their shop at Unit 6, Royal Star Arcade, High Street, Maidstone or online at www.pregalicious.co.uk

What questions do parents have about cloth nappies?Making the decision to try cloth nappies is not always an easy one, even with facts about landfi ll and saving money. Parents want to know if they are easy to care for. Are they comfortable for your baby? Are they easy to use?

Happily, the answer to all these questions is yes. You don’t need to learn origami, set up pans of boiling nappies on your cooker, or even soak them in a chemical sanitiser. Today’s machines and detergents do all the work. Times have changed along with the nappies.

Can you explain some of the jargon? All cloth nappies have two elements. A cloth part that is absorbent and a cover, called a wrap, which is usually a

NATURAL NATURAL NAPPIESNAPPIES

did you knoW?…l each day, 8,000,000 nappies are binned in the uK.

l research suggests that parents will, on average, save more than £500 using cloth nappies rather than disposables.

l one child will have more than 4,000 plus nappy changes before potty-training.

breathable, coated fabric. The wrap is waterproof and stops any wetness getting on baby’s clothing. Some nappies have built in covers, but most come in two separate parts - the cloth nappy itself and a waterproof wrap which goes round it.

Cloth nappies have grown in popularity enormously over the last decade. Environmental concern, cost-saving or just the desire to have something natural next to their babies delicate parts are all reasons cited for choosing real nappies. But the jargon and choice can be overwhelming. So we asked Jenny Hicks of the Medway Cloth Nappy Network for her advice.

Times have changed, you don’t need to learn origami, set up pans of boiling nappies on your cooker, or even soak them.

Liners are a thin layer of paper, a bit like a tissue, which is placed next to the baby’s skin. These allow wetness through but stop it coming back into contact with the baby’s bottom. Liners also contain the solid material and can be fl ushed down the loo when you change the nappy.

Like many things, there are optional extras: nappy bags, booster pads, natural sanitisers. They’re useful but not essential.

here’s a Basic run doWn of The differenT Types of cloTh nappy:

How can parents buy cloth nappies? Some supermarkets and baby shops stock them, although the range and quality of advice can be limited. There are many stockists online, often dedicated cloth nappy users themselves, who can give email and telephone suggestions. The other option is to contact a local cloth nappy advisor. They are local parents who have used cloth nappies and work as agents for particular suppliers. They can show you lots of different nappies and give tailored advice to suit your circumstances, baby and budget. I am a local advisor for BabyKind, one of the biggest online companies and offer 1:1 demos and talk to groups too.

Can you try before you buy? Some companies offer trial packs. Locally, the Medway Cloth Nappy Network has a nappy library you can borrow once you have had your baby. It contains everything you need to try all the different types of nappy and includes all the accessories you’ll need. It costs £15 for two weeks with a small refundable deposit.

What other help is there?Medway Council offers a grant of up to £30 off the cost of buying cloth nappies. For details contact Waste Minimisation on 01634 333333. Or you can come along to a nappucino coffee morning, run monthly by the Medway Cloth Nappy Network, or Saturday drop-in session (in partnership with NCT Medway). It’s a chance to talk to other cloth nappy users, make friends and share tips. For further information visit www.medwayclothnappies.org.uk or call Jenny on 01634 687519. Jenny is also an agent for Babykind cloth nappies and sells a wide range of nappies and accessories.

couldn’t be simpler! One piece to put on, one piece to take off and

wash. These nappies can be slower drying

because of their design, but do make things

convenient, especially with older, more wriggly

babies and toddlers.

Pocket nappies take ease of use one step further. These nappies have a pocket in the middle, usually between a layer of waterproof fabric and a layer of soft, stay-dry fl eece. Pop an absorbent pad or insert into the pocket and then there’s just the one piece to put onto your baby, fastening with poppers or velcro.

Shaped nappies are a cloth nappy shaped like a

disposable, but with a nippa, velcro or poppers to fasten.

Many are made to fi t a range of sizes, so you’re

unlikely to need more than two different sets before your baby is out

of nappies. Some even fi t from birth to potty-training.

This is probably the most popular system and most

reliable all rounder.

Flat nappies, such as terry squares, are the cheapest option. They’re not as tricky to use as you might imagine and are very versatile. Instead of nappy pins, there are plastic grippers called nappi nippas.

I love the wow factor when people see a beautiful cake” says Alpa Patel who set up www.cupcakeavenue.co.uk earlier this year. “I baked for family and friends and many commented I should start a business but I didn’t have the time or confi dence. When my fi rst daughter was born I went back to my fi nance job full-time, dropping her off at 7am and picking her up in the evening. Looking ahead to the future I knew I wanted to be there to collect her from school. So while I was on maternity leave

with my second daughter I booked myself into some Adult Education courses. I took local evening courses in cake decorating, sugar paste fl owers and creative chocolate, and am currently studying sugar craft. I decided to specialise in cupcakes because there is a gap the market in Medway and it’s a growing trend. Cupcakes can work out much cheaper than a big cake at weddings and birthdays and my mini-cupcakes are great for kids’ parties or as canapés. I have lots of fun coming up with new fl avours and toppings; my most popular is the chocolate ganache cupcake followed by cookies’n’cream and peanut butter. I have set myself a goal: in one year I would like to go part-time in my current job, so that I can spend more time with the kids as well has work from home baking cupcakes.

Beth from Rochester, met business partner Anna while studying Textile Design. Says Beth: “After having my daughter I wanted to find original items to deck out her nursery. I couldn’t find what I wanted so I made them myself. Friends commented how much they liked them so I thought - why not sell them.” “We felt there was a gap in the market,” says Anna. “We create items people will treasure,

particularly for occasions like new babies, christenings and milestones. We sell online (www.buntingandbows.co.uk) and also on eBay and Etsy. Our range includes cushions, bunting and wall art. All personalised with a child's name so each one is unique. My favourite is our recycling service where customers can send us old baby clothes or blankets and we turn them into a beautiful, one-off item for their children.” Says Beth: “Neither of us have run businesses before, but we’re picking up the necessary skills as we go along. Our advice would be have an idea, find a gap in the market and don’t be afraid to just give it a go! We wish we had done it years ago!”

Tip: Websites are a must these days for any small business but they don’t have to cost a fortune. We built ours ourselves using www.moonfruit.com. It’s easy to use and we haven’t compromised on the look or functionality of our website. We were able to produce a professional result at a very reasonable price.

mollycupcakesMedway mum Catherine Short set up her business, Mollycupcakes, three and a half years ago. “I was waiting around on maternity leave for my second daughter Molly to arrive. Feeling big and bored I sat down and painted some plain pegs. I thought it would be a nice way of displaying the new baby cards I was about to get. Then a light-bulb moment happened and I popped a pack on eBay," she says. "Within a couple of days I was approached by a shop wanting to stock then and it’s gone from strength to strength. I now sell my products online at www.mollycupcakes.co.uk, Etsy and at shops in Medway. Local and national craft fairs and events are another great way to get your products out there and meet other like-minded businesses."

Tip: Take good photos of your stock, making sure they are bright and clear, to use on your own site or eBay. Visit local independent shops taking a smile, sample of stock and price list and see if they're interested.

Three children, two businesses and a home to run – is 24 hours really enough?

When I sit down and think about all I need to do, I get so overwhelmed and think how on earth do I fi t it all in? But somehow you do.

I started my training business four years ago simply because I enjoyed training but I quickly realised there was more to running a business – brochures, websites, policies. With no real fi nance behind me I couldn’t hire someone so had to do it all myself. That’s when the late nights start kicking in and, of course, with children there are no late mornings.

Did I get into a routine? Not really. I took on a hard-to-resist job and started to write a book, like you do! I wonder why I commit myself so heavily, but the basics still got done. And although the business wasn’t on the FTSE 500, it was ticking over.

Part of my wanting to work for myself was to be there for the children. But when I wasn’t

working, I was tidying up, washing, cleaning, shopping or trying to spend some quality time with them. I would take them out, but I wasn’t focussed and had no energy. So trips were abandoned or everyone went back home in a mood.

I was aware that my life was primarily run by children’s activities, supplying a decent home and providing all the extra bits of fun that children demand: computer games, ice skating with friends or going to a football match. But I needed to take my businesses seriously. I wasn’t going to get very far by always leaving the things I needed to do until last.

So, I got my business brain on and looked at how I could maximise my time and still get everything done. And this is what I do:

Three children, two businesses and a home to run – is 24 hours really

When I sit down and think about all I need to do, I get so overwhelmed and think how on earth do I fi t it all in? But

I started my training business four years ago simply because I enjoyed training but I quickly realised there was more to running a business – brochures, websites, policies. With no real fi nance behind me I couldn’t hire someone so had to do it all myself. That’s when the late nights start kicking in and, of course, with children there are no late mornings.

pleased he knows how to do it!

So I often get up extra early to start work. When I have a bit of a

sleepless night, rather than tossing and turning, I put the laptop on and get on with some work.

l On the train, I brush up on some reading for work or my own personal development.

l I plan what I need to do each day including both work and personal chores such as telephone calls, course

l I don’t give myself such a hard time – it’s not the end of the world if I haven’t emptied the dishwasher!

And, most importantly, I give myself permission to lie on my bed for five minutes just relaxing. With all that we do we are allowed at least that.

WhaT do school governors do?Every school has a governing body to represent the public in the running of the school. School governors bring perspectives from ordinary life and work with the staff and the Local Authority (LA) to help secure the best possible education for the children in the school. They have important responsibilities like managing the school budget, overseeing the curriculum and appointing staff.

Who can be a school governor?Anyone who cares about the schools in their community. It doesn’t matter whether or not you have children or grandchildren. And you don’t have to be in employment. The main requirement is a desire to work with the School Head and team of governors to make the school efficient and effective.

do i need special experience? No qualifications are needed; there is a comprehensive training programme, which

could you be a ScHool goveRnoR

is free to governors. New governors attend an introductory training course held locally in the evening.

hoW much Time does iT Take up?Governor meetings are usually held three or four times a year at the school, with smaller sub-committees working on special projects. Governors often spend some time visiting the school and getting to know the staff and how it works, but it’s up to individuals to decide how much time to commit. Most find they spend about sixty hours per year overall.

What’s in it for me?Being a governor can enhance your career and cv, providing excellent experience of management and team working. It shows that you’ve played an active part in your local

governing bodies are working, often behind the scenes, to make sure that their school is the best it can be. you may think you don’t have the skills or experience to be a school governor but, as patricia daniels from medway’s school governor service explains, the best governing bodies include people from all walks of life.

community and developed skills, even if you haven’t been in paid employment. Many governors also get a great satisfaction at having contributed to their school and local area.

hoW can i apply? Some governors move on when their children progress to new schools or employment, so autumn is a busy time for recruiting new governors. If you are interested in applying to a particular primary or secondary school you can contact the school directly. To find out about schools with governor vacancies or for an informal chat about whether school governing is for you, contact Medway Governor Services on 01634 331052 or visit the www.medway.gov.uk website for their section on School Governors.
