NARRATIVE STRUCTURE• This documentary is an open, single strand, non linear narrative structure.

Also, this documentary is a circular structure as it returns to the same point, Kenny in the music jam.

CAMERAWORK

Medium close up.Off centre (left or right) looking at the questioner and not the camera. This shot shows Kenny not acknowledging the camera.

This shot shows a zoom in on a still image.

This shot shows the camerawork following the rule of third ‘s as it shows Kenny’s eyes roughly a 1/3 of the way down the frame during the interviews.

This shot shows handheld camera work in the opening and closing scenes of Kenny in the music room. This has been done to give the person with the camera the ability to quickly respond to any action taking place

This shot shows shallow depth of field as the background in this interview is out of focus. This has been done to ensure that the viewers focus is on him.

This shot shows actuality footage of Kenny performing. The shot is filmed from the audience, therefore allowing the viewers to view the show as though they were really there.

This shot shows a big close up of the record label.

High angle establishing shot

The streets were Kenny grew up were filmed using a moving camera in a car.

Other shots used:• A low angle shot showing

the empty streets where he grew up.

• Pulling of focus, changing the focus between two objects signposting to the audience where their attention should be.

MISE-EN-SCENE

Awards shown in the background of the interview to show experience. This has been done to build a relationship between Ken and the audience as it makes the audience believe what he is saying as he knows what he's talking about.

This shot shows a piano and a record in the background of the interview. These objects have purposely been placed there to link the interview to the overall topic of the documentary (Kenny Rodgers and his music career.)

The constant theme of gambling is carried throughout. For example, gambling machines are shown to link to the song “The Gambler”.

Footage of where Kenny grew up was used, showing empty streets. This may have been done to gain sympathy from the audience as it shows that he made his life from nothing, showing that he had to work for his fame and that he deserves the chance he has been given.

SOUND

Throughout the interviews, there was no background sound. This was done to ensure that all of the audiences attention was on the interviewee.

Kenny Rogers’ own music was played throughout the documentary. For example his song ‘The Gambler’.

Gospel music was the music bed when actuality footage of the street where Kenny grew up was shown. This could have been done to imply that he came from a religious area.

The voice over used throughout this documentary was a female who spoke in a clam manner using Standard English. A voice over was used as she holds the narrative together, by introducing and ending the documentary.

EDITING

Cuts were the most commonly used edit during this documentary. All of the questions in the interviews were cut out. Jump cuts were used to ensure that the join between each answer was smooth.

Dissolves were used when still images were shown. Each still image would dissolve into the next.

a montage of Nashville was used to show many images in a short period of time.

Red and yellow flashes were used as a transition between each still image. This was used to connote the dazzling life of showbiz.
