CHORAL NEWS

On Thursday 1st September KSSS Choir welcomed Spring

the best way choristers know how. The KSSS Choir spent a day at Singfest, singing and polishing 5 demanding songs at the Old Museum at Bowen Hills with nearly 300 enthusiastic choiristers. Under the conducting of Mr Tim Sherlock the day culminated with a glorious concert for parents. The children were excited and were not disappointed by the result. The day was long finishing at 6.00pm but the enthusiasm lasted throughout the day and they gave their all. Well done KSSS Choir members.

WRITING NEWS

Authors’ Corner began in week 2 of this term. Each week we get 12 Year 4 -6 students attending on Tuesdays and 35 Prep-Year 3 students on Fridays. Some of our creations are currently on display in the Library and it is great to reflect on the sessions we have enjoyed so far. The students come to the Library and ask “What are we doing today?” Each week has a planned theme and the students use their imagination to create their writing within that theme. So far we have created: open the door books, book boxes, lift the flap books, the smallest books, newspapers, story maps (where the reader chooses their own endings), book bags and cartoons. This week Year 4 -6 students were making a 3D room or place scene to write about next week and Preps-Year 3’s will be making pocket books. These sessions have been lots of fun and the students have enjoyed coming up with great ideas to share with each other. Authors’ Corner will continue next term with more creative writing fun to be had!

Year 6 NAIDOC Week Writing

This term in English, students learnt about songs of social comment. The focus of learning was on Indigenous land rights and the history exploration of Indigenous land ownership. Students selected a topic they felt passionately about and wrote their piece for NAIDOC week, highlighting an important focus from their learning. In pairs, students edited each other’s work and gave oral and written feedback before their final edit. Below are some excellent informative final copy samples of writing from the year 6 students titled ‘The Referendum’, ‘White Australia’, ‘Referendum of Justice’ and ‘Indigenous Rights’.

YOU CAN DO IT!

This week in the You Can Do It! program, students will be able to recall the basic elements of organisation. They will learn the usefulness of doing unpleasant and difficult tasks before doing pleasurable, easy tasks. . They will be able to create their own lists of things they have to do. Older students will continue to apply a variety of organisational techniques to keep track of their work.

ACTIONS YOU CAN TAKE TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD’S SOCIAL

and EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING AT HOME 1. A place for everything. Sometimes, children can spend too much time looking for materials. Put together a small kit of necessary items. It can be a box or plastic container. Have paper, pens, pencils, and a dictionary ready to go at homework time. 2. Encourage your child to keep a small, personal to-do list. S/he may also use coloured pencils to keep track of subjects or important deadlines. He should also set short-term targets such as when working on a big project. 3. While your child is learning to get organised, check in as often as possible. Then provide a "gradual release" by checking in weekly and then monthly as your child gets older and becomes an independent, confident learner.

If your child would like this reward, please also send us a second choice in case it is no longer available. Thank you to Victoria Wahl, our School Banking Specialist from the Commonwealth Bank for donating some money boxes to the SWD unit to help students learn about money and the value of saving.
