In Myanmar, the length of time fromthe middle of April to that of May is the pre-monsoon period and sporadic rain orthundershowers are likely then.

According to the 17 May weatherreport, the southwest monsoon has alreadyadvanced into the Southern Myanmar areasand squalls with moderate to rough seas arelikely at times off and along the Mon-Taninthayi coast and there can be heavy rainin Lower Myanmar areas.

As there can be squalls at the beginningof the rainy season, necessary precautionsshould be taken to ensure that there is safetyfor people who live near old buildings and bigtrees and the vessels plying in the rivers andalong Mon, Taninthayi, Ayeyawady andRakhine coasts.

It should be noted that rain clouds, crashes of thunder and flashes of lightning arethe signs that strong winds can occur in theevening. Therefore, overloading vessels orletting down rainproof sheets while they aremoving should be avoided.

In Myanmar, storms can occur at thebeginning of the rainy season and at the end ofit. People living along the Myanmar coastsshould carefully listen to weather reports. Moreover, storm-proof buildings and thequickest and safest way to them should besought and preparations for rescue work madein advance.

In the event of storms, electric powerlines and gas pipelines should be cut off andpeople should take shelter in safe places intheir houses or in the surrounding area.

This is the time when air and watertransport departments, regional organizationsand people should be on alert and worktogether on precautions against naturaldisasters.

Jordan, Shell reach oilexploration deal

SALE, 18 May — Clamor fills the factory as work-ers bent over their industrial sewing machines stitchtogether women’s garments at galloping speed. Yetthe vast workshop is only half full, its blank benchesa testimony to how the global financial meltdownswings back at the developing world.

Morocco’s diverse, open economy has served as amodel to poorer nations in Africa and the Arab world, but it has also left the country exposed to global down-turn as trade with the rich world shrinks. And manyare now watching whether the ripple effects of inter-national finance could turn nasty in a developing na-tion like this north African kingdom with strong po-litical and migration ties to Europe.

Moroccan authorities fear some 20,000 jobs are be-ing cut in the textile industry, about 10 percent of thenational total. Others have vanished in the tourism in-dustry, the backbone of the coastal country’s economy.Carmaker Nissan froze plans for a car plant promisingthousands more positions. Remittances are down, too,as Moroccans working in Europe face layoffs.

“We’re worried more cuts will follow,” said NaimaArour, shouting to make herself heard over the ham-mering of her sewing machine. “Without work, westarve here,” she said, barely lifting her eyes from thecollars she was hastily fixing to women’s blouses.

Old genes can learn new tricks

Two Onthophagustaurus males. ArminMoczek and Debra

Rose's study suggestsseveral genes involved

in making legs andantennae were co-opted

to make the beetles'horns. Horns are anovel trait that isunique to horned

beetles.

BLOOMINGTON, 18 May — A popular view amongevolutionary biologists that fundamental genes do notacquire new functions has been challenged by a newstudy in the Proceedings of the National Academy ofSciences.

Indiana University Bloomington biologist ArminMoczek and research associate Debra Rose reportthat two ancient genes were "co-opted" to help builda new trait in beetles -- the fancy antlers that givehorned beetles their name. The genes, Distal-less andhomothorax, touch most aspects of insect larvaldevelopment, and have therefore been consideredoff-limits to the evolution of new traits.

In the two horned beetle species Moczek andRose studied, the genetic sequences of Distal-less andhomothorax were hardly different, suggesting thetwo genes have retained their unique identities becauseof selective pressures not to change. —Internet

SCIENCEDAILY, 18May — Scientists havelong wondered how tinysilicate crystals, whichneed sizzling hightemperatures to form, have found their way intofrozen comets, born in thedeep freeze of the solarsystem's outer edges. Thecrystals would havebegun as non-crystallizedsilicate particles, part ofthe mix of gas and dustfrom which the solarsystem developed.

A team ofastronomers believes they

have found a newexplanation for bothwhere and how thesecrystals may have beencreated, by using NASA'sSpitzer Space Telescopeto observe the growingpains of a young, sun-likestar. Their study results, which appear in the 14May issue of Nature, provide new insight intothe formation of planetsand comets.

The researchers fromGermany, Hungary andthe Netherlands found thatsilicate appears to have

been transformed intocrystalline form by anoutburst from a star. Theydetected the infraredsignature of silicatecrystals on the disk of dustand gas surrounding thestar EX Lupi during oneof its frequent flare-ups,or outbursts, seen bySpitzer in April 2008.These crystals were notpresent in Spitzer'sprevious observations ofthe star's disk during oneof its quiet periods.

"We believe that wehave observed, for thefirst time, ongoing crystalformation," said one ofthe paper's authors, AttilaJuhasz of the Max-PlanckInstitute for Astronomyin Heidelberg, Germany."We think that thecrystals were formed bythermal annealing ofsmall particles on thesurface layer of the star'sinner disk by heat fromthe outburst.—Internet

Biological particles trigger iceformation in high-altitude clouds

Biological particles—bacteria, pollen, fungi—actas nuclei for formation of ice in clouds.

SAN DIEGO, 18 May— A team of UC San Di-ego-led atmosphericchemistry researchersmoved closer to what isconsidered the “holy grail”of climate change sciencewhen it made the first-everdirect detection of biologi-cal particles within iceclouds.

The team, led byKerri Pratt, a Ph.D. stu-dent of atmosphericchemistry Professor KimPrather, who also holdsappointments at ScrippsInstitution of Oceanog-raphy as well as the De-partment of Chemistryand Biochemistry atUCSD, sampled waterdroplet and ice crystalresidues at high speedsfrom an aircraft flying

through clouds in theskies over Wyoming infall 2007.

Analysis of the icecrystals revealed that theywere made up almost en-tirely of either dust or bio-logical particles such asbacteria, fungal spores andplant material.

While it has longbeen known that micro-organisms or parts ofthem get airborne andtravel great distances, thisstudy is the first to yieldin-situ data on their par-ticipation in cloud iceprocesses.

Can happiness be inherited?MEXICO CITY, 18

May—A new study sug-gests that our feelings inour lifetime can affect ourchildren.

Dr. Halabe Bucaysuggests that a wide rangeof chemicals that ourbrain generates when we

are in different moodscould affect ‘germ cells’(eggs and sperm), the cellsthat ultimately produce thenext generation. Suchnatural chemicals couldaffect the way that spe-cific genes are expressedin the germ cells, and

hence how a child devel-ops.

In his article in thelatest issue of BioscienceHypotheses, Dr AlbertoHalabe Bucay of Re-search Center Halabeand Darwich, Mexico, suggested that the hor-mones and chemicalsresulting from happi-ness, depression andother mental states canaffect our eggs andsperm, resulting in last-ing changes in our chil-dren at the time of theirconception.

Brain chemicals suchas endorphins, and drugs, such as marijuana andheroin are known to havesignificant effects onsperm and eggs, alteringthe patterns of genes thatare active in them.
