Congratulations to Mrs. Dale, 4th grade teacher for her participation in the Illinois Literacy Conference in Springfield. Mrs. Dale was invited to be a presenter as she represented School District 204! We are proud of her expertise!

Fun was had by all at the spring parties on March 25th. Thank you to head room parents and parent volunteers for their creative crafts and games. What a special treat for our students!

Responsibilities for SchoolBy: Burhan H. Sufi Class: KM

In the LMC if there is a mess on theshelf clean it up.Make space for other books.Make sure you put the books back in order.

When you are in your class room, ifa paper falls from anyone’s mailbox,be kind and pick it up and put itwhere it belongs.

If anyone loses a crayon, be nice andshare your crayons with them.

In music class, if anyone forgets howto play an instrument, help them toremember how to play it.

As we begin to bring this school year to a close, we still look forward to many exciting PTA sponsored events such as Field Day, the Birthday Book Club Party, 5th grade Family Night, and our last Skate Night of the year! The PTA wouldn't exist without all the wonderful chairpeople and volunteers who help execute these fantastic activities for our children! No time like the present to THANK everyone for helping make this school year a wonderful experience for all!

It takes many volunteers to keep all the activities going throughout a school year. Even though this school year is quickly coming to a close, we ask that you consider looking at chairing or volunteering for one of the many opportunities for our 2011-2012 school year. Information regarding volunteer opportunities will be available in September, but if you are interested in participating or chairing a specific event, we ask that you contact us.

A quick reminder that in the Fall of 2011, we are beginning our process to "Go Green" and therefore, this Kaleidoscope monthly newsletter will only be available to read on our Kendall School website.

And lastly, we invite you to join us for our last General PTA meeting of the year on Friday, May 13th at 9:15am.

Special Needs PTA Submitted by Kelli Brouder

What is Multiple Sclerosis?

Multiple sclerosis (MS for short) is a disease that affects the brain and spinal cord (also known as the central nervous system). The brain is like a computer that sends messages to your body telling it what to do - like "walk" or "talk."

The spinal cord is like a thick bunch of wires attached to the brain. Messages travel from the brain along the spinal cord to the muscles all around your body. So, if you brain wants your arm to lift up and wave, it sends a message along your spinal cord to your arm. Your arm gets the message and starts to wave!

When a person has MS, the covering (myelin) that protects the nerves in the brain and spinal cord is affected, so the message cannot always get through. Multiple means many, and sclerosis means scars, so multiple sclerosis means “many scars.” These scars on the myelin interrupt messages being sent, so when the brain tells the arm to wave, the message might not get through or gets mixed up so the arm doesn't do what the brain wants it to do.

More Facts about MS

Although there is no cure for MS yet, some of the symptoms may be helped by medicines and other treatments, like exercise. Most doctors say that a person with MS should go ahead with normal life, and try to work around the extra problems the symptoms may cause.

Even though we know a lot about MS, we still can't tell ahead of time who will get this disease. It is mainly people between the ages of 15 and 40 who get MS - twice as many women as men.

You can't catch MS by touching a person who has it or by holding an object that this person has touched. MS may be different for each person. The symptoms of MS may not be too serious and may change over time. MS may suddenly cause problems, because you never know what it will do or how it will affect someone.

Researchers are still looking for the cause and cure for MS. Information provided by: http://www.msforkids.com/index.asp

The Special Needs PTA will meet May 17th at 7pm. Meetings are held at the Crouse Education Center, 780 Shoreline Drive, Aurora. Dr. Kathy Birkett, Superintendant will be present and give an update.

IPPC Meeting March 17, 2011 Submitted by Christy Russell

Dave Holm, Assistant Superintendent for Business -We are looking to restore a few items this year: technology and facilities (building modifications). How much can we do right now? -State reduced revenue flow doesn’t seem to be changing soon. Could be 3 or 4 years in the future. Right now they owe us $8.4 million. It will go up every quarter. If we go all year without payment it will be $17-18 million owed. As of right now, the state has paid us $0 for the year. -We don’t think we will need to make staffing reductions for next year. They might actually add some in certain areas.

-Reflections theme for next school year was changed from “Diversity Is” to “Diversity Means.”

Safety First

Vehicular traffic before and after school continues to increase. You can help by encouraging walking and carpooling. You can also help by following safe and courteous practices as those described below:

• Kendall's front drop-off/pick-up is available to carpoolers with three or more children only. If one of your carpooling students is absent or otherwise not being picked up on a particular day, you may still use the pick-up line. The front drop-off/pick-up area is not for those who do not carpool.

• Carpoolers must make a left turn out of the front circle. This rule keeps the front pick up cars away from the Pradel/Meadow Lake crosswalk.

Both front and side car pick up should:Place a sign in the car window indicating the first and last names of students being picked up,

particularly during inclement weather.Pull up as far as possible, and watch for staff members to direct this process.Make sure that your children can open their own doors, buckle their own seat belts, and have

backpacks, umbrellas, etc. read to go.Pull around and wait in front of the loading zone if your children are not ready for pick up.Give one, take one as you enter the circle drive.Remain in your vehicles.Reinforce with your children that their "job" outside is to watch for your car.

The staff parking lot is not to be used for or during pick up.

It is unsafe to drop-off students in highly congested areas such as the crosswalks or across the street in the middle of the block.

Please be patient. Please follow the rules. Hundreds of students use our pick up lines each day. Arrival and departure times are the most dangerous times of the day due to vehicular traffic. This situation is made more problematic when drivers choose speed and convenience over safety.

Thank you!
