What is Doors Open Clarington (DOC)? As part of the Doors Open Ontario initiative, volunteers and members of our community invite you to “Unlock Your History”. By opening the doors to homes and properties our sites showcase Clarington’s history and heritage. This free event is held annually on the second Saturday in June. What should I know when visiting a DOC property? Each property owner or organization has kindly opened their doors to the public. Please ensure that you respect these sites by only accessing designated viewing areas and not accessing off limit areas. Children are welcome on all of the DOC sites, please note that they should be supervised at all times. Pets are not permitted on our sites. How can I be part of Doors Open? The Enniskillen Orange Lodge building was moved here in 1927 and was attached to this building. Major renovations, including installing running water, were done in 2005. Explore the fascinating history and traditions of the Kendal Orange Lodge. This building functioned as a schoolhouse from 1965-99, and then a group of local women decided it should be converted into a community centre. It now serves as the heart of the community for special events such as weddings and dances. Kendal Walking Tour Beginning at Kendal

United Church

Kendal (originally called Watertown Mills) is a quiet little hamlet with an amazing history. Envision a bustling village built around the commerce of five mills and learn more about life in the early- to mid-1800s and some of the people with ancestors who still reside. Guided tours starting every hour, on the hour beginning at 10 AM.

Four beautiful memorial windows on the south side of the church historically ties to both the original New Connexion Church (1869) and the Enniskillen Orange Lodge, this church is a must-see.

Kendal Crown Lands 4369 Ganaraska Rd., Kendal, ON

The Ontario government acquired this 862-acre (349-hectare) property on the Oak Ridges Moraine in 1966 with the intent of creating a greenbelt area near Toronto. Now designated a crown land, local citizens maintain its groomed hiking trails, streams, fish ponds and shelter in progress. Family-friendly activities, demonstrations.

The authors of the fiction/adventure series Rise of the Prince operate ThinkBFAB Inspirational Centre. The centre’s peaceful surroundings are ideal for people to practise mindfulness and discover who they really are amidst the Ganaraska Forest. The Grange 4472 Conc. Rd. 8, Kendal, ON

Elliott family homestead 1859-1969. J.S. McLean, Canada Packers founder 1927 & philanthropist raised next door. These families shared a long history as evidenced in the gateway cemetery. 1907 house additions by the Elliotts still visible today. 1986 current owners added further; both house & barn have many stories to tell…even ghosts.

A 17.6 MW wind energy project, commenced operations in May 2016. This project consists of 9 turbines near the community of Orono. Come learn about renewable energy, planning, construction and operation of this wind project, as well as Capstone’s ongoing commitments to the environment and community in which they operate.

The first building in 1836 was a log structure just southwest from the present school. In 1857 a new larger frame school was built and it was incorporated into the current building in 1878. Original blackboards and two desks. The outside bell predates the cupola and is said to be the original one for this school. Family-friendly activities.

Dare 2 Dream Farm 8169 Langstaff Rd., Kendal, ON

Donated by Abraham and Mary Ellen Jackson as a memorial to their son killed at age 24, (October 16th, 1918) in action in WW1. A commemorative archway and two gates were erected at the park entrance June 1926. For over 80 years the park has been a local and provincial site for baseball and many other community events.

1832 LeRue’s settled here in a log cabin west of the present stone home erected in 1845 for Alexander Marr; done by a Scottish stone mason who emigrated to Canada after working on the Rideau Canal. Note limestone mantels & lintels originally ship ballast on a schooner into Kingston. Join us to relive the folklore and history.

Once a booming industry, now a shell of what used to be. Each kiln held about 1,200 sticks of tied tobacco. Curing was a painstaking process. Conditions inside had to be just right for both temperature and humidity. Come see a rare and unique view of a curing Kiln and learn about the historic tobacco industry through a guided tour.

McLean /Elliot Methodist Cemetery 4472 Conc. Rd. 8, Kendal, ON

Situated on a steep hill with the original wrought-iron gate adorned with a cross in the centre. The earliest burial was made in January 1861; it is believed that there are 50 burials. On the north side is a unique family burial plot that was once fenced in and separated from the other plots.
