the kemcolian, Vol. 28, No. 1, Summer 20081

i am a kemcolian. all because i was educated in the science of medicine at this historic college of the sub continent. the need of the time was to educate and train local physicians to take care of the population. many have since spent their lives in the singular honor of treating mankind. Years later many a kemcolian left the country of their birth to far off lands in pursuit of education, higher training and fi nancial independence. The latter pursuit sometimes takes precedence. But of course unless you have extra resources and means it is tough to accomplish transfer of technology to a third world country. the alumni such as kemcaana become a strong leverage to accomplish such lofty goals of improving the image, prestige and educational stature of their parent institutions. the following pages will show some of the present day programs being instituted and executed by some of the more active kemcolians. We stand in salute to them.

the change in the educational stature of any reputable medical institution rests among other things a central commitment to seek and implement newer thoughts alongside newer techniques. in all essence the thought trumps the technique. change of thought has always been the underpin-ning of a medical profession. i remember in 1985 sitting in cardiology ward looking over a patient with myocardial infarction. he was having recurrent chest pains and his heart was dying in piecemeal. now i run a 60 minute drill to open the coronary immediately after a heart attack to prevent such a catastrophe. the change in thought process has been dynamic and has evolved a new technique.

the thought process rests with the mind set and i found out that three things helped me to change my thought process. the knowledge that i do not have. the courage to say ‘no i do not know’ and the determination to fi nd out what I need to know. The alumni’s efforts can help in providing resources of information. We have but to work toward the fi rst two. If we can all strive to help our kemcolians get the realization that we have to know more and it is ok to accept that we cannot possibly know all aspects of a gigantic fi led such as medicine, more than half the battle would be won.

The spirit of an alumniThe Battle

kemcaana, is the name, well known, for rendering the services of the medical Profes-sion by the alumni of king edward medical college (now University) in the north america. the people attached with this association are faithfully working for the

betterment of their alma mater and in turn for their beloved country Pakistan. i feel pleasure to write this message to be published in the forth-coming issue of the kemcaana magazine. the services rendered by the kemcaana for revamping of the medical education as well as curriculum development bringing it at par with the excellence are laudable. the sprawling com-puter net work in the whole of the University including its attached hospitals and the hostels and establishing a laboratory for the provision of the medical literature and computer training are other features need to be praised.

it is a general notion that the people abroad forget their institutions, which have nurtured them, but the kemcaana is proving contrary to that by taking care not only of their alma mater but also their homeland. i hope and pray that they will keep supporting their alma mater on an accelerated pace in all the fields including provision of sophisticated and innovative machines, gadgets and training of the young doctors.

i pray to al-mighty allah that he may give the kemcaana courage and strength to work more enthusiastically for the advancement of their alma mater and support it. my faculty members and i are ever ready to support the kemcaana in their activities in the institution and the country .

increase the membership of kemcaana. to date we have had a tremendous response. if you are not already a member, i hope you will consider becoming one today. You can become a member on-line at www.kemcaana.net or by filling the at-tached membership form. Your membership will strengthen kemcaana and help us continue our several programs.FOCUS ON ALMA MATER:there is new leadership at kemU. Professor Zafar Ullah khan is the new Vc. We have been in close contact with him and hope for a continued cordial working relationship.Improvement in the Quality of Medical Education at KE: It is obviously a difficult and lofty task and there are many points of resistance but we as an alumni need to continue to push for it. the whole curriculum and method of education at ke needs to be revised. We need to continue to closely work with the Vc and the faculty and provide the encouragement and impetus to make it happen. in this regard, we have arranged a seminar at the upcoming Retreat. Professor muhammad awais, the Pro-Vice chancellor and chair of medical education Department at kemU and Professor Sara Walker, Past President of acP will be participating. We also plan to hold seminars on this issue at the Winter meeting in lahore.KEMCAANA Education Initiative: We have developed a formalized program with kemU for holding well arranged seminars, talks and workshops at ke on a regular basis. if you would like to participate in our “Visiting Faculty Program” at kemU, please sign up on www.kemcaana.net or write to us. The Computer Lab has been expanded to 53 stations and continues to function very well. the cost of running this project and the providing internet facilities to 32 sites at kemU and mayo hospital is about $ 1100 per month. We are also planning to provide an internet facility to the lady Wellington hospital. the cost of the project is $ 12000. We hope to establish a computer lab Fund, the income from which will be used for the operating expanses of the lab. We plan to raise $ 150,000 for this fund. We will appreciate your donations towards this project.Charitable projects aimed at improving medical care at mayo hospital are worthwhile and are being undertaken. We are planning to establish an emergency fund for medical and Surgical supplies for Disaster Relief management. We are also hoping to establish a Zero interest loan program to cover travel and short-term accommodation for qualifying ke students and graduates as they

have an outstanding team of Officers and Commit-tee chairs. i could not have asked for a better group of people to work with. more so, whenever i have requested anyone for their services to kemcaa-na, they have stepped up and delivered 110%. We are all greatly indebted to their services and selfless dedication. i feel there are 2 main objectives of any alumni organization:

help the alumni 1. help its alma mater2.

This year we have focused on these Key Areas:FOCUS ON ALUMNICommunication: i feel it is the single most im-portant means of building and strengthening our organization. We have to communicate with kem-colians effectively and often. We need to outline our plans and highlight our achievements. this is how we are going to encourage interest and par-ticipation. We now have an outstanding website with incredible resources and information. We are continuously striving to improve it further. We have also been communicating with you electronically (Blast mail and Yahoo group) and by regular mail. We will continue to do so. this journal is part of the effort. i sincerely thank Dr. Furrukh malik and Dr. muhammad haseeb for taking on the leader-ship for publishing the journal. Our first responsibility is to our members: We have to not only communicate with our members but also listen to what they are saying. may it be by electronic communication or our meetings, we have to give full opportunity to our members to express themselves and answer their concerns. This is why we have ensured that sufficient time be devoted to interaction and Q&a sessions at our meetings. We have to move away from mundane one sided presentations and more toward participa-tion and empowerment of the membership.Young Physicians: this year, we have made a concerted effort to involve more young physicians in our executive council and our committees. We would very much like to see the young physicians become an integral part of our operations, know what is going on and inject fresh ideas and enthu-siasm into our association. We also need to con-tinue helping young physicians in the United States to be placed in residency positions, research pro-grams and electives. if you want to help the young and upcoming ke graduates, please sign up on our website, www.kemcaana.net. Your help will be much appreciated.Membership Drive: our strength lies in numbers. i am happy to say that under the able leadership of Dr. aisha Zafar, we are diligently working to

Dear Fellow Kemcolians: assalaam-o-alaikum. as i sit down to write

for the journal, several thoughts come to mind but foremost is how humbled i am to be serving as the President of kemcaa-na this year. kemcaana has an incredible history dating back over 3 decades. First formed in 1975, it is the oldest associa-tion established by physicians of Pakistani origin in north ameri-ca. it was started before aPPna which came into being in 1976. over the years kemcaana has been served by incredible people who to this day remain committed to its cause and maintain its core values. So one inevitably wonders why so many people have been so dedicated and have spent so much time in building and fostering this asso-ciation. they could easily have sat back and enjoyed their suc-cess and achievements in our new homeland. if i may say, i feel what motivated them was undoubtedly a sense of gratitude to our alma mater and a yearn-ing to give back to the institution and its people whom we owe so much. as we work tirelessly to carry on the mission of our predecessors, their outstanding example and direction is what guides us. We feel a deep sense of responsibility to carry their work forward.this year, we are very blessed to

INSTITUTIONAL BUILDINGConstitution and Bylaws: every institution needs to have their constitution and Bylaws reexamined every few years. this year we are in the process of revising the caBl and will be presenting the first read at the upcoming summer meeting.Finances: the accounting and disburse-ment of money for our operations is being streamlined. our Goal is that before initia-tion, each project will have a clear outline on how it is going to be financed and be budget neutral.I am very enthusiastic and confident that in future kemcaana will continue to be a

The Kemcolian

Dear kemcolians, assalam o alaikum. congratulations, our

hard work from the past few years has finally begun to shine through with many positive re-sults. as kemcolians, we pos-sess an inherent spirit to excel in every endeavor that we embark upon. our progress in leader-ship has not only served as self –growth for inadividuals, but as a visible bright ray of hope for the youth of today.ke students have started to join in our efforts by showing a strong interest in kemcaana activities. through regular corre-spondence with kemcaana,

the ke students and recent grads are playing a significant role in making valuable contributions to help us work on matters that will directly affect the educational environment at ke. they contact us in their aspiration for support and guidance. inquiries pertain to clinical development, research positions, help with interviews for residency positions, etc. We give top priority to these contacts, and try to respond to every question in a diligent and efficient manner.

Recently, the imG’s have been facing the challenge of stiffer competition within the U.S. for residency positions because of the rampant change in the post-graduate medical educational system in the Uk. compounding the situation is the Visa clear-ance delays. however, in sight of all of this i am happy to report that kemcaana was able to expedite the Visa clearance of most graduates that contacted us last year. thus, the incoming Resi-dents were able to join their respective programs within their timelines. our success in Visa clear-ances would not have been possible without the help and cooperation from ecFmG. our hope is that we can continue our strong support for recent grads, this year and in future years.

in our efforts to help the Young Physicians, kem-caana has been working closely with those pres-ently in training. their willingness and involvement gives us encouragement. Realizing the needs of the physicians in training, kemcaana along with the collaboration of aPPna, took the initiative to

prepare an insightful document called “the Do’s & Don’ts of Residency training for imG’s”. the introductory pages of this project are being pub-lished in this magazine, and the complete version can be viewed at Kemcaana.net by clicking on the Young kemcolians section. this document has been reviewed and approved by the ecFmG and is being used by training programs as part of their orientation. thank you to all those who con-tributed to this project.

the kemcaana retreat in chicago was indeed a memorable event. it was well planned by President mubasher Rana and was equally well executed by the gem of gems, arif agha (ke 1984). kem-caana greatly appreciates and acknowledges the hard work of the local host committee. on behalf of my fellow kemcolians and myself, i would like to extend my gratitude and thanks. as we move along, we sincerely hope that kem-caana’s wave of progressive growth will con-tinue and its members will remain active in sup-porting all projects and activities, either through volunteered time or financial contributions.

once again, thank you to all our members, recent grads and ke students, without whom, our prog-ress would not be possible.

arif agha, mD (ke 1984)chair, Website committee

kemcaana.net, the new website project, was initiated in July 2007.

the new site has a vibrant look and speaks for itself “i’m easy to use”. Previous domain name was abandoned last year due to failure in transferring the name from the original domain regis-trant. the web site has two seg-ments; the main site and a secure “member’s area”.Main Website

this area features wide variety of contents including objectives of the organization, history of kemcaana and kemU, the constitution & Bylaws, achieve-ments and ongoing projects. the site also provides up-to-date information on the executive committee and offi ce bearers, board of trustees and various committees. the previous publi-cations of kemcaana (jour-nals, brochures and souvenirs) are also archived on the net. Membership benefi ts and appli-cation form are available on the new website. Special attention has been given to membership area with secure access requiring log in and password.

arif agha, mD (ke 1984)

Website Committee reportSecure Area (Member’s Only)the secure area is dedicated to alumni services. it requires a log in (email address) and a password (member’s choice). this process has been automat-ed obviating the need of a phone call to register. When a member signs up for the fi rst time, his/her info will be collected into the data base. the sign up is free at the time of writing. however in the near future, it will require annual or life time member-ship dues. a permanently free sign up category will be created for those graduating in the last 7 years (assuming under training status). member’s area provides access to kemcaana directory, mem-ber profi le, discussion forum, residency positions, class websites, photo galleries and other features.

Membership Directorya comprehensive search based directory has been placed in the secure area. a member can search for another member in the directory by criteria such as name, address and the year of graduation. Data is being collected on practice type and academic af-fi liation. This will help fi nd Kemcolians in various specialties and those who are in academic programs could help young kemcolians in their training. a functional directory is based on accurate data. We are continuously striving to refi ne our records. This area needs help of every kemcolian. We request that you sign up at the new site and provide your current information.

Residency postingsthis year, in march, we launched a service for young kemcolians whereby candidates for resi-dency positions can post their availability on kem-caana website. Similarly, program directors can post residency openings. kemcolians who are not in academics but have info on such vacancies can also post such positions on the website. the same service is available for electives and fellowships.

Document Verifi cation from KEWith a click of a mouse, ke grads in US can have their document verifi cation done through KEM-caana at a cost of merely $55 in less than two weeks time. Your documents come from ke via Fed Ex and go to the respective offi ce directly.

Virtual Offi cethe data base collected will eventually replace the paper offi ce. Large memory space is available to keep com-munications with members and record of their trans-actions in the administrative role. annual membership renewal notices will be automatically generated.

Blast Email System: Our new website is equipped with a blast email system. the strength of such a sys-tem lies in an accurate email addresses data base. We have only limited number of addresses. i would there-fore encourage all kemcolians to sign up on the web-site and provide their most recent info so that they can be kept abreast of the organization’s activities.

Online Payments: Kemcaana.net uses Pay pal account for online secure transactions. this system has been helpful in transactions of membership fees and other services (e.g. document verifi cation). Donors can do-nate online too. Recent retreat meeting was also a huge success in terms of instant online registration and hotel reservation facilities. www.kemcaana.netTransparency: The website will also post the minutes of the executive council and other meetings. in this way membership will be kept aware of organizational activities.

Features in ProgressSome interesting features will be launched soon. We are working on bringing the access of the kemcolian netWoRk (a Young Physicians forum created by Young ke Grads) also through our home page of the website. members will have the facility to upload their photos as part of their profi le. Photo galleries to share memories of college days and of recent get-togethers will be made available. each class will be provided free space for a website and an area for discussions and class reunions. a common discussion forum will also be launched fairly soon.

Comments critique and suggestions are welcome. Please email your valuable ideas to Arif Agha at: [email protected]

We are in the process of encouraging ke faculty to arrange for dedicated electives time. moreover, notifi cation of summer vacation by administration at the start of academic year would enable students to plan ahead. these measures will help students plan their electives timely. help may be acquired from other kemcolians through web based msn- kemcoliansnetwork and kemcaana - yahoo group forums (links on kemcaana webpage). We also plan to establish an information center/con-tact person in ke and in US that may facilitate the process.

in future, kemcaana is looking into the pos-sibility of sponsored stipends to top students in each class for coming to US. lastly institutes like akU and Shaukat khanam cancer hospital are good options as well to enhance their experience. our alumni in these institutes may need to step forward and establish a kemcolian friendly elective system. additionally, we request all ke alumni faculty in US to help secure elective rotations for ke stu-dents. our little effort can go a long way to pay back our alma mater.

elective, guarantee a residency position. Short answer would be, although it does not guaran-tee a position but it helps.

an elective rotation is usually part of curricu-lum in most medical schools. Unfortunately king edward (ke) lacks a system that encour-ages electives. kemcaana is well aware of all the challenges faced by students to do electives in the US. Usually kemcolians come to US soon after their fi nal professional examination. It may be partly due to lack of dedicated time for elec-tives and last minute announcement for sum-mer vacation. We think spending few weeks in US hospitals has several advantages – to name few would be personality development, fl uency in english language, exposure to western medi-cine and letters of recommendations.

kemcaana has not only realized the im-portance of electives but also aware that only a small number of students are able to come to US. We have identifi ed several barriers. These include lack of information, visa issues, fi nanc-es, lack of dedicated time for electives, traveling and lodging. as an organization our efforts are still in its infancy and we would like to have in-put from students and help from alumni.

it is widely accepted that se-curing a residency position is a challenge that needs

long term planning and commit-ment. Several milestones can be accomplished while in medical school. elective(s) in US hospi-tals is one of them. a concern may arise; would hard earned money, time and effort to do

on the behalf of the scholarship committee, i would like to thank the many kemcolians who do-nated generously towards the fund-raising appeal during last Ramadan. We received donations total-ing $27,725 and pledges for two additional scholar-ships, which will begin to be awarded over the next fi ve years once they are fully funded. The total ex-pense of printing and mailing the Ramadan appeal was paid for by a member of the scholarship com-mittee, which avoided using scholarship funds. this year, we are planning to increase the monthly scholarship amount to 2000 Rs. beginning Sep-tember, and our goal is to eventually increase this monthly amount to 3000 Rs. We also hope to in-crease the number of scholarships to 50 per year. We currently have $168,892 in the scholarship ac-count, invested with Smith Barney. in order to fully fund these scholarships, we will need $500,000 in the scholarship account.

We are in the eighth year of the kemcaana Scholarship Pro-gram. this year, we are giving 32 scholarships in the amount of 1500 Rs. per month.

Computer lab has expanded and fl ourished to an extent that none of us imagined even a couple of years ago. currently our staff is managing two servers and over 200 com-puters spread all over various departments of the University and wards of mayo hospi-tal college, including two outpatient depart-ments and in the Boys and Girls hostels. Broad band internet has been made avail-able to all machines through wireless net work created by kemcaana. We are con-templating an increase in the wireless Band width as soon as it becomes available in the area. We are maintain a complete record of all the individuals using out computers and fully control the sites that are open to us-

ers. We also provide support to the anatomy learning center lab. this year we have insti-tuted the computer lab iD card system to curb the use by non kemU people that had been noticed.lady Willington hospital and lady aitcheson hospital both are requesting inclusion in the system. But due to lack of funds we have not been able to provide this service as yet. these additions extensions will cost around $12000.00. Dr. mubasher and the executive committee are soliciting donations for this project.

mr. Raashid Javed our lab manager is doing a very fi ne job, Some times over and above the call of duty. his relationships with the

kemU staff and the students has enhanced the image of our lab. Recently he has been handling the Documentation Verifi cation project for us in an excellent manner and has established the value of this project.

Dear Rashid Sahib and kemcaana lead-ership,

thank you for your recent e-mail. the docu-ment verification is complete and already de-livered to State Board of Pennsylvania. i would like to add that it is an exceptional idea on the part of kemcaana to offer such a service. this is especially true given all the trouble we physicians residing in the US encounter each time documents need to be verified and mailed. Furthermore, the quality of service provided by mr. muham-mad Rashid Javed is outstanding. he han-dled the matter in an expeditious, swift and professional fashion. at every step he kept me posted and even emailed me the scanned copies for review before dispatching them. The quality is reflected by the fact that if you ask me to suggest something to improve this service, i will not be able to make any sug-gestion at all as it is already perfect.

thank you very much for all your efforts.i hope that the service will continue at the same affordable fee.

Historical Backgroundin 1860, king edward medical University now was started as lahore medical School. in 1868 Senate of University of Dublin recognized it. in 1888, it was known as lahore medical col-lege. Up till 1887, diplomas were awarded to students in english class and also in study of Unani and ayurvedic medicine.in 1891, 1st degree was con-fessed by lahore medial School. in 1860 Dr. J.B Scrvein was 1st

Principal of the college. col. ilahi Baksh was 1st muslim Prin-cipal and Prof. mumtaz hasan was last Principal and 1st Vice chancellor when in 2005 king edward medical college was given the status of University by an act of Punjab assembly.

For the promotion of higher education, Government of Pakistan has established higher education commission and has put Rs. Fifteen thousand million (Rs. Fifteen arab) at its disposal. this was to be utilized by Uni-versities throughout Pakistan. only Universities are authorized to be benefi ted from this source and NOT colleges. in Province of Sindh following institutions were elevated to the status of Universities:

Dow medical college became Dow medical • Universityliaqat medical college, karachi became liaqat • medical University. agha khan University, karachi• Baqai medical University, karachi• Zia-ud-Din medical University, karachi•

medical Universities at nawab Shah and chandka are being developed. in province of nWFP, khy-ber medical college has been elevated to the sta-tus of University. in province of Punjab, only one medical university was created named as University of health Sciences which unfortunately does not have its own college and not its own building.

king edward medical college was established in 1860. earlier then even Punjab University, Govern-ment college lahore, Veterinary college, lahore, lahore college for women, kinnaird college, la-hore, F.c college, lahore. all above have been granted the status of universities by acts of Provin-cial assemblies, but king edward medical college was deprived of this right despite being the oldest and most well respected medical institution of sub continent. Finally in January 2006, Punjab health Department issued notifi cation of KEMC being el-evated to a University and Prof. Dr. mumtaz hasan was appointed as fi rst Vice Chancellor of the Uni-versity. By virtue of this elevation the institution is able to get all benefi ts nationally and internation-ally.

Followings are glimpse of some of benefi ts:1. Develop own academic Programs with quality assurance. king edward medical University has developed 70 major and 15 minor qualifi cation programs in all specialties and sub-specialties of medicine. 2. Educational activities beyond pure medical fi elds are developed. king edward medical University has its own faculty of nursing and allied health Sciences 3. Develop only sub/new campus. Sahiwal Campus is in process at the moment. 4. Collaborate nationally and internationally in fi elds of education and research to develop knowledge. 5. Develop linkage with industry6. Create its own fi nancial resources including en-dowment fund which gives it fi rm fi nancial footing 7. have own recruitment authority8. own system of examination and quality assur-ance 9. Develop its own human resources development mechanism

10. Reserve funds for research at present 10 mil-lion have been reserved for this purpose11. have complete independence in civil work, purchase of equipment and furniture, transport, renovation and consultancy.12. Develop its own projects like tissue culture lab-oratory, molecular biology laboratory, new hostels, residences for staff etc.13. Utilized resources from higher education com-mission which only a university is entitled. higher education commission has approved 476 million Rs. mega project for new six storied building and Rs. 100 million as recurrent grant every year.14. obtain resources for indigenous programs i.e. fellowship, uplifted laboratories15. Up lift libraries and develop e-library by hec support16. Scholarship for PhDa. locallyb. internationally, hec has sanctioned 29 schol-arships for PhD in basic subjects for kemU for Uk, USa France, Japan, Germany and china17. Under foreign faculty training programs ex-perts can be obtained and remuneration up to Rs. 250,000 per month for expert teachers is paid by hec. king edward medical University has six such experts. alumni of king edward medical University can benefi t greatly for this facility. 18. Under visiting scholar programs expert from abroad can visit kemU for a period of 2-4 weeks. all travel expenses, stay and daily allowance will be borne by hec. alumni of king edward medical University can also visit their alma matter under this scheme. 19. Develop infrastructure technology by grant from HEC including fi nancial record keeping etc.20. on line lecturing and video conferences facil-ity is also provided by hec21. hec also provides meritorious needy students for students in top institutions22. hec provides support of writing mono group and text books23. Facilitate admission of foreign students in the university24. Develop sport complex. Some of the facilities which only king edward as University can enjoy and not as college.

i am sure with its historical background, its alumni spread all over the world, its largest medical faculty this university has bright future and will come at par with any other great institution of world.

years old and daughter was three.

on June 5, 1976 he came back to Jerusalem after a long trip from eastern europe. he went to his house, but there was no house. It was all fl at land. he could not believe his eyes, and blinked several times. he ran towards his neighbors to enquire about the house and children. he lost control and starting running like a cannon ball. he knocked at the fi rst door, and out came an old man with a fl exed body and garbled speech. He held the neighbor tight with quivering hands and beseech-ing eyes as he asked about his house. the old man with sobbing eyes said, ‘the enemy bulldozer wiped this whole block.”

“i wish the earth would open and swallow me then. it appeared as if some one has stabbed me with a blunt knife piercing my vessels and heart. the pain was unremitting. i questioned my existence. the pounding heart became a pinch of ashes with a constant smoke of bewilderment and sorrow. my nights were marred with mourning, and my days were haunted with the memories of Rabia and nasir. there was no grave even to go and visit. there were no remains. life looked bleak, and surrounded by pitch dark desolate clouds with no ray of hope. Despair and dejection engulfed me. i wanted to become part of the dirt with no epi-taph”, he said to me.

“Depressed and outcast i left my job and came to my home town of azad kashmir. i did not want to live and had no desire to eat. i started gradu-ally coughing and losing weight. one of my dis-tant relatives has brought me here and deposited me in the medical ward. i was transferred to tB ward for treatment, but i do not want to live.” he said, “the nurse brings medicines, but i throw them in the garbage. i have no desire to live, and i would not take any medicine which would keep me alive.”

i kept going to see him, but then one day his bed was vacant. i went to the nurse and enquired about him. She said that he expired last night, and ac-cording to his wishes he donated his dead body to medical students. i ran to the mortuary to pay my last homage to him.

ward almost every evening with intention to ex-plore this interesting, yet different patient. initially, he was reluctant to open any window of dialogues. Gradually, he started interacting with me.

he was a resident of azad kashmir, and had at-tained education up to a Bachelor’s degree. after attaining his education, he could not fi nd a job in his home country. he applied for a position of a marine worker in a foreign shipping company. he was accepted for the job, and started making a de-cent living. he was a sole supporter of his mother as his father had died in his early childhood. he did not have any siblings. overtime, life became very rosy, and he started enjoying his job. his job required traveling to different parts of the world. a year later, his mother died most likely due to a heart ailment. it was a very sad and heartbreaking moment as his mother was an embodiment of love, dedication, and hard work. She was his architect and strength. Sobbing and grief continued for sev-eral months, but he was able to lift himself with relentless efforts.

he continued to work on ships moving from one port to another. one day, his ship touched the coast of the mediterranean ocean. his ship was anchored in a territory which he always wanted to visit, since this place was very singular and sacred to him. this territory was no other than Jerusalem. he became a regular visitor of this place as his shipping com-pany was actively delivering goods to Jerusalem.

While in Jerusalem, he fell in love with a Palestin-ian girl. Suddenly his dull and languish life became exotic. There was a fl are and spark in his life. The wrinkled sheet of life became an eternal fi eld of multihued fl owers. Gloomy and dismal days were tainted with a soothing breeze of tranquility and serenity. life became purposeful and exquisite.

he married his life love, and soon was blessed with a son and daughter. his children were able to see the love of their maternal grandfather as he him-self was deprived of a fatherly fi gure at home. He continued to work in the same shipping company. he would rush to his family as soon as he would get off from his project. he would play with Rabia and nasir, wanting to give them the affection and fond-ness which he was not able to receive. he would carry their pictures in his ship cabin. these pictures were refreshing moments in the hours of boredom. he would buy toys and gifts from every city where his ship would anchor. By this time, his son was fi ve

Suddenly the door opened, and in the stretcher was a patient with emaciated body, sunken eyes, prominent cheek, and jaw bones. his face had a grace with blue eyes. he was clad in light blue shalwar and kameez. it appeared that the patient was brought here against his wishes. a colleague of mine started con-versation with this patient. the patient answered his questions with enormous confi dence and clarity without any sand of am-biguity. his demeanor and pre-sentation moved me, and my sense of curiosity woke up af-ter a long slumber. the patient was a typical case of pulmonarytuberculosis with hemoptysis, loss of weight, and night sweats. The diagnosis was confi rmed by radiological and laboratory evi-dences.

solid roof top was the tops of tall trees, their leafy branches swaying gently in the lahori mid morn-ing breeze. the view seemed to encompass my en-tire medical college experience. on one end there was the brick red enclave of Pharmacology and the other basic sciences contrasting to the marble white of the Forensics building; the Jillani pavilion where many a class photo had been taken, mind you always in the mid of summer heat; the grassy green grounds where i had participated in the cer-emonial march during our annual sports week. the other end of the view comprised the hustle bustle of anarkali, the winding narrow streets lined by juice vendors where we would treat ourselves after having acquired the latest edition text book from Zubair book store, which were assured was sure to make us pass any exam, and we believed it. more-over, the end of the staircase fi nally brought me in close proximity to the Patiala gumbads. i will tell you that they are even more magnifi cent close up. there are an elegance and grace in the minimal ornamentation that confers a statuesque quality to them. i think every student at king edward medical col-lege has at one point or another stopped to gaze at Patiala blocks and its wondrous domes, and been inspired to achieve the most they cannot only as a physician but also as a person. Such is the nature of truly great works of art whether they are in the form of painting, literary work or solid work of construction.

thinking back, i still get very nostalgic. these days, as a resident at the Johns hopkins hospital i pass by the famed “landmark dome” every day. it is one of the preserved portions of the original hospital which has been restored and renovated; it now houses administrative offi ces. In its own right, this structure too is very intriguing. the Dome is a good example of 19 century american architectures, nestled in between newer construc-tions which encompass the hospital. I fi nd myself wondering how sturdy the stair case leading to the top of this dome is………

step of a fi nal year medical student that is far more animated, than those of younger classmates. the feeling of being the “senior” of all seniors, the one with infi nite advice to give from matters as complex as how to calculate red blood cells in a neubauer chamber to important decisions regarding which canteen offers the best samosas with mint and yo-ghurt chutney. every morning you walk through the physiology parking lot and pharmacology lawns, moving past the sprawl of anatomy gardens, mak-ing your way to your new found domain Patiala. ah yes Patiala block, that spectacular edifi ce of inveter-ate architecture with its beautiful white domes. the trials and tribulations of “real life” are still at least a year away and one can relish in the fact that here and now you are the person that every person ju-nior to you aspires to be.

to take a moment and focus in particular, on the Patiala “gumbad” or domes. i feel these structures are possibly most characteristic not only of Patiala block on campus, but also of king edward medical College. You see, as a kemcolian your fi rst vision of the domes is perhaps during your admission pro-cess. the endless trips to pay your tuition and get your roll number, all take place within the admin-istrative offi ces nestled in Patiala block. Driving through the hum drum of anarkali the only thing that caught my eye was this magnifi cent building with its lush lawns and i remember wondering, what the view from the top of it would be like and when and if i would ever get the chance to enjoy it.

Getting back now to my fi nal year escapade. As it was our fi rst day of fi nal year, I only felt it suitable to rally up the troops and journey our way up the narrow winding stair case leading us to that intrigu-ing structure that we, or at least i had been longing to climb up to for the past 4 years! the journey was treacherous, as calling that fl imsy structure as “stair-case” would be an over statement. it is perhaps bet-ter described as a metal shoot with fl at fl imsy rungs. every step a trap, every turn full of breathtaking anxiety. Six of us trudged along cautiously, ignor-ing the squeaks and clanging of the steps beneath us. After what seemed like an eternity we fi nally reached the end. and reach the end we did indeed.

The fi rst sight I remember as I stepped on to the

i clearly remember that balmy morning after our fi rst fi nal year lecture, when

my friends and i decided to tra-verse the spiraling staircase near the fi nal year lecture theater in Patiala. We had decided that as “new Final Years”, now we truly had grown in to the kings and Queens of king edward medi-cal college; so it was now or-dained that me must explore the heights (pun intended) of our kingdom.

as i’m sure many of you know there is something magical about the moment you complete the fourth year professional exami-nation. it is quite indescribable. You see the feeling of complet-ing the fi nal professional is a bit-tersweet experience; it is tinged by a mélange of happiness, mel-ancholy and anxiety at no lon-ger being a medical student and the weight of responsibility that awaits you.

however the end of fourth year is marked with nothing but joy. in a manner of speaking, even the most humble of us gets a feather in our cap or a chip on our shoulder. there is a certain confi dence and bounce in the

the kemcolian, Vol. 28, No. 1, Summer 200821

For most kemcolianS, wherever we might be today, the years we spent in the one square mile between nila Gumbad, anarkali and Gawalmandi were arguably some of the best and the most for-mative years of our life. many of us wish to pay back something to the institution that made us what we are today.

here it is important to point out that kemcaa-na has done a lot for ke and also, ke graduates over the years have also done a lot, as groups and individuals. however, things are changing rapi-dly both in the US and in Pakistan. members of KEMCAANA twenty years ago were fl ush both with newly acquired knowledge and expertise and many were doing rather well fi nancially. Medicine and medical education in Pakistan were at that time comparatively primitive, and i use that word advisedly.

things have changed at both ends. kemcaana is not as rich as it used to be and the state of medi-cine in Pakistan has improved considerably since then. the technical and intellectual gradient that existed at that time has diminished to a great de-gree so that most specialists in Pakistan are quite cognisant of the latest innovations and treatments available in their areas of expertise.

Does this mean that all is well in the home country and in our Alma Mater? Yes and no! Here fi rst a point of general interest. money as such is no lon-ger the basic problem and neither is ability to ac-quire technology. But serious structural problems do exist. and i will discuss a few in some detail.

Perhaps the most important problem is the state of undergraduate curriculum especially in the ba-sic sciences. as pointed out to me recently, the department of Pharmacology still teaches its stu-dent to make folded paper packages for medicines. Why, because if they don’t teach them that the ex-ternal examiners during the viva examinations will fail them for not knowing how to do it!

the most important thing that kemcaana can therefore do in my opinion is to identify its mem-bers that have experience with curriculum develop-ment and collaborate with kemU to bring about appropriate changes that update and modernize the existing curriculum. Perhaps the next kem-

programs in almost all medical specialties.

In his fi rst meeting with the Academic Council (all the heads of departments of the university), the new Vc reiterated that the primary function of kemU is and will always remain the education of medical students. this includes as always the under-graduate education and the house job in an affi li-ated hospital that prepares these new physicians to go out and face the world, so to speak as it did with all of us over its history.

more recently, the chairman of the advisory com-mittee on health to the new government of the Punjab, a kemcolian himself also met with the academic council and presented some of the points that the new government is considering to improve the ‘state of health’ in the province. many propos-als were discussed but those specifi c to KE would suggest that kemc might be resurrected as an en-tity separate but within the umbrella of kemU.

Whether kemU and UhS (the University of health Sciences) might be joined to produce keUhS re-mains to be seen. most of the academic council was of the opinion that kemU should continue but with the added mandate of affi liating new and some old medical schools that wish to come under its umbrella. this will be a political decision and will be determined by the political environment that ex-ists in the province over the near future.

as far as kemcaana is concerned, another more important change that has occurred is that Dr. Fayyaz Ranjha (ke class of 1977) the medical Superintendent (mS) of mayo hospital for more than fi ve years has also been removed from his po-sition. this will create an entirely new dynamic be-tween ke and mayo hospital and also within mayo hospital. the previous state of persistent disagree-ment between ke and mayo hospital is therefore likely to change, hopefully for the better.

the reason why this is important being that over the last four years or so, it was virtually impossible to ask for help from kemcaana for any depart-ment at the mayo since this would lead to consid-erable displeasure on part of the former Vc and create considerable problems.

about three years ago, king edward medical college became king

edward medical University. the reasons behind this decision are complicated and have much to do with the personalities in-volved. But, it is at least impor-tant to point out that the deci-sion was not universally accepted as the right thing.

as i write this, kemU is in a state of transition. Professor mumtaz hassan. Principal and then the fi rst Vice Chancellor of kemU ran the institution for al-most a decade. Professor Zafar-ullah khan, previously the dean of medicine took over as Vc a few days ago. those who don’t know him, Professor Zafarullah khan is the senior professor of medicine at this time and a ke graduate of 1973.

it is relevant to our discussion that under Professor mumtaz hassan, kemU took on the re-sponsibility of training a large number of ancillary medical specialties. the university also embarked upon an ambitious university centred training pro-grams both diploma and master of Surgery/Doctor of Medicine

What Can KEMCaana Do For our alma Mater?

the present trainees but also create a research ethos that will be of great benefi t to future physicians.

Finally, one warning, most Uk and Paki-stani trained consultants working in Paki-stan in general and kemU in particular are extremely wary of american trained physi-cians. Whether they feel threatened by them is besides the point. But it is these physicians that are in positions of authority in Pakistan and if we do wish to work for ke we will have to learn to work with them.

Professor Syed mansoor hussain is a KE graduate of 1970. After his house job in Mayo Hospital in the Department of Cardiac Surgery he came to the US and completed his training in gen-eral and Cardio-Thoracic surgery. He is a Diplomat of the American Boards of General Surgery and Thoracic Surgery. He was affi liated with Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He relocated to Pakistan in 2004 and took over as the Professor and Chief of Cardiac Surgery in 2004.

sity based masters or doctoral program. the cPSP program leads to an FcPS in the ap-propriate specialty while the university pro-gram confers an mD or an mS degree.

Both of these training pathways expect that the resident will produce at least one original research article during the training period. more often than not, this research paper is a sham and most supervisors have never produced any original research work them-selves or even participated in a real research project. here i am referring to most people i know on staff at kemU. clinical training albeit haphazard is usually adequate due to the tremendous amount of clinical exposure available in the teaching hospitals.

to sum it up, i do not believe that we in kemcaana should concentrate as much on transfer of technology and clinical exper-tise as much as trying to help out with cur-riculum development, develop research proj-ects as well as support the medical journals being produced by kemU and providing a strong peer review system for it.

in my opinion the most important single thing kemcaana members can do for the trainees in KE and its affi liated hospitals is to support basic and clinical research and perhaps even mentor the trainees in their research projects. This will not only benefi t

caana meeting in ke should concentrate on this topic.

the second issue of considerable concern is the state of graduate education both at the house physician and the specialty trainee lev-el. house physicians are a peculiar problem. all medical graduates need one year of house job to obtain a permanent PMDC certifi cate. as such almost every graduate enrols for the house offi cer position. Unfortunately many of them think of this as just a formality and not really as a learning opportunity. in my own department, i have ten or so house physicians. i have no idea what to teach them! many of them are fresh graduates who have had no previous surgical exposure of any kind. So, i end up giving them didactic lectures on basic cardiac disease. more often than not i also end up going over basic phar-macology, physiology and anatomy, stuff one expects they should already know but they do not, and this includes some of the better graduates from ke. So, it would seem to me that some help in developing a rational house job training program might be worth considering.

the next major problem is training of spe-cialty residents. at the present time there are two training tracks that are supposed to produce equally qualifi ed specialists. One is that of the cPSP, and the other is a univer-

process play out we are largely amused bystanders rather than vociferous proponents of one view-point or the other. We have not yet ‘owned’ this society only become an affluent member of it. Sort of a lateral entry if you will, (reminiscent of Pakistan’s foreign service under Premier Bhutto in the 70’s) without going through the rigors of com-petition and examination.

Similar is our attitude to the homeland we have taken to observing through the eyes of western media. We are oblivious to the unhealthy conse-quences of the hiatus from a representative gov-ernment for such a long period of time. the daily hardships of mere existence in Pakistan with the shortages of food (real or contrived), electricity, water and the instability caused by the polarization of society between those who have and those who never will. the steady decline in educational stan-dards and the dire need for trained professionals in all spheres. We do not identify and ‘own’ these issues either .We often fail to even recognize these issues.

So what we have accomplished as citizens of ei-ther country other than educating and enriching ourselves. But of course we have brought up our children and educated them.We have certainly nourished, nurtured and in-dulged our children. We have coddled them and catered to all their whims and fancies. as we look back there were soccer lessons, piano lessons, summer camps, drama classes and riding lessons. all paid for dutifully. there were private schools and all paid for colleges with no whiff of student loans or scholarships. the children have made us proud by doing well; by finishing the Quran, by accompanying us on our annual pilgrimage to the homeland and by saying salaams to all the varied aunts and uncles we introduced them to. they have as teenagers even suffered through cousin Sakina’s boring wedding and sundry other func-tions till during college they refused to be dragged to anymore of these ‘desi’ gatherings!

So much as we would like to believe otherwise these children are different from us. they are now grown into young people, taller broader more handsome (ok not more handsome. the swar-thy complexion and receding hair at twenty-five must be from ‘her’ arain side!! peasants!), but oh so lively and joyous with a carpe diem philosophy to life. So very different from the dark foreboding attitudes of the old country buffeted by genera-

why the new airport near Fateh Jang will be a boon to the people or alternatively why it will be a disas-ter! Why the cricket team failed and why the hou-bara bustard is deemed an aphrodisiac. there are friends and siblings who will procure choice seats at Gaddafi stadium for the one day match against australia or better yet against india. We of course will allow ourselves this indulgence. We deserve this. We are after all the chosen ones of the family who are returning with dollars in our pockets, ex-pensive watches on our wrists, multitasking phones that keep us wired into our lucrative practices thou-sands of miles away and we bestow in our benevo-lence largesse and gifts to all and sundry.

We have spent enough time in college in lahore to appreciate the ‘chic’ of an embroidered kurta with a carelessly worn ‘tush’ shawl adorning one shoulder, the jauntily angled chitrali cap and the hand sewn (yet remarkably uncomfortable) leather khusa. We still sway with genuine emotion to the crooning of mehdi hassan and the lilting high notes of a noor Jehan ghazal. We still have enough of the Ravi’s fla-vor in our nostrils to ‘aavayee, aavay and Javayee, javay’ with the best of them and share raunchy jokes with the local yahoos at favorite eating-places.three weeks of shami kebabs, chapal kebabs, seekh kebabs, bihari kebabs and other culinary delights leaves our delicately balanced and prevacid tuned sybaritic epicurean languishing for a good green salad with something other than Rooh afza to drain it down with.

the journey back is like walking back into daylight. the lights are brighter, the shops cleaner, the cars roomier, the roads smoother, the king sized pil-low top mattress so invitingly comfortable and the shower so clean and wholesome and pure and, and, and did i mention pure and wholesome!!

as we recover from the jet lag we are grateful to be living in this ordered and efficient society where the garbage is picked up every week, the telephones work all the time and the other gender, sartorially minimalist so very easy on the eyes. We, at least, are not too troubled by the $4 gasoline price. truth-fully we are not troubled by much of what is ailing everyone else at all. the illegal immigration issue. the obesity epidemic, racial inequality, the increas-ing suicides amongst enlisted men, the conditions at Walter Reed hospital, global warming, and the housing market collapse. these are all issues and concerns that we have isolated ourselves from. they belong to the ‘others’. as we see the electoral

there is not much ques-tion that members of aPPna, particularly the

senior members of this much self-celebrated organization have had the best of both worlds. While conveniently absolving ourselves of the responsibility of owning as our own, the tri-als and tribulations of either so-ciety we have been able to over the past three or four decades live like chameleons, blending smoothly whether we are having ‘tikkas’ in Gowalmandi or enjoy-ing a filet mignon at the Four Seasons. Such are the fruits of success that we are accepted in both the upper echelons of this promising, rewarding, glittering new homeland and the blighted, load shedding ravaged, violence ridden one we have so blithely forsaken.

We all, as yet, have families who look up to us with some pride and a lot of envy. Such that our brief sojourns (carefully crafted to ensure good weather and avoid the heat!) are days to savor and enjoy. there are always rela-tives wired into the power struc-ture of the government machin-ery. everyone has an uncle with an ‘inside’ connection who pro-vides the life sustaining elixir of gossip about anything from why the prices of atta have shot up to

land of their ancestors. they have ingrained in them through a process of osmosis what makes the west different from the east. they are individualistic and deem society and gov-ernment subservient to their needs not vice versa.

So that at the end of this lengthy social ex-periment we have left in legacy to this soci-ety not only our own youth and the fruits of its extensive labors and our intellectual commodities but we have bequeathed to it our children and future generations. that is not an inheritance that can be altered or withdrawn.

our society, our culture, our many short-comings and failings, but also our many attri-butes and values, our sense of fi lial devotion, our respect for age and tradition and our commitment to family will wither and per-ish at the altar of enlightenment and liberal thought. We will not be the fi rst and certainly not the last to undergo such an experience, but the thought does linger as to whether this success in just a single generation has been worth the price.

tude over the formative years has remained so tainted despite the myriad exposure to liberal thought and writings. (Do we ever read?).

in contrast, the born here, generation’s com-mitment to individual liberty, freedom of thought and the pursuit of happiness are very real and obligatory consignments designed into their inner core. they are not empty slogans but deep seated values enshrined in the intellectual make up of western society going back to the Greek Persian wars, the age of Pericles, the age old struggle between the plebeians and patricians of ancient Rome culminating in the French enlightenment in the 17th century. This fi nally took practical form in the constitution of this new nation in the 18th century. its earliest leaders con-sciously propounding a philosophy of deism thence separating church and state forever. this basic difference in the intellectual make up of fi rst generation immigrants born and educated here as opposed to those of us coming’ off the boat’ at age 25 is as concern-ing for the parents as it is a non issue for the progeny. We feel at home hunting with the hounds and running with the hares. We have done it all our lives. the children feel differ-ently. they are born to this society and owe their allegiance here and more importantly are at home here and feel aliens in the home-

tions of colonial rule, unstable regimes, bad harvests, fl oods, earthquakes and wars. The people back home take their pleasures and happiness from weddings, births, eids and Shab–i-barats. there is no joie de vivre only a deep-rooted uneasiness that bad times are just around the corner. thence the invoking of the lord’s name before every pronounce-ment or undertaking, the constant thanks to his Benevolence.

this generation of Pakistan americans is in essence american. their sense of values car-ries with it no servitude to eons of reverence for elders and traditions that yoked their fa-thers and forefathers. tradition to them is a few microns deep and extends to singing the Stars and Stripes at ball games with cap backwards and chewing gum. not for them the fi lial obedience that was the norm just a generation ago.

there is in their genetic make up no fear of failure or rejection. no sense of discrimina-tion or recrimination for being what they are. their parents weaned on political insecurity ecclesiastic uncertainty and an overbearing society corseted into a rigid code of behavior deemed socially acceptable to an unwritten sense of propriety found release on enter-ing this liberal society But the inborn psyche tainted by the exhortations of moral recti-

Dr. arif Quereshi, affectionley known as “haji Sahib” by his friends, is the most colorful personality of

aPPna, in general as well as in literal sense. a humble man with kind eyes and compassionate heart, full of wisdom is often seen in the aPPna meeting among the company of his friends or should i say, “mureeds”. his magnetic personality is always in the center of large gatherings, often dispensing with advice for those who seek. although now-a-days he generally shuns aPPna politics, often say-ing that the “politics is not for me”, but it has not always been like that.

a graduate of class of 1967 from king edward medical college, he was a dynamic leader, a sav-vy politician with killer political instincts. he was elected the general secretary of kemcaana, and celebrated the victory riding on a horse, a pic-ture to that effect is being circulated on the net. a very interesting story was told to me by one of his friends.

as a general secretary Dr arif Quereshi wanted to invite Z.a. Bhutto to the convocation, but the k.e. administration were opposed to this idea and had somebody else in mind. arguments and counter ar-guments ensued and Dr Quereshi sensing that ad-ministration is not going to give in, suddenly went

to plan B, and said o.k., we will agree to inviting the person of your choice, on one condition, and

that is that you give us new curtain for the canteen. Principal agreed and Dr Quereshi declared partial victory. Be ready for plan B, is central to Dr Quereshi’s political ideology and i tell you, it usually works. after coming to america, he went through a metamorphosis from a true constructionist of islamic ideology to a voice of modera-tion, stressing love for humanity,

irrespective of race, creed and gender. he loves Pakistan, his motherland and makes many trips a year, where he is involved in many charitable pro-grams, the largest of which is a two hundred bed orphanage for girls, which he built, through his own resources and now totally funds it. he also funds many charitable hospitals and clinics. he is an active member of aPna list serve, where he is known for his kindness to all and his prayers for everybody. infact his Dua’s for those in need, ailing and sick became so much part of his personality, that he is known as “home depot of Dua’s” a title given to him by Dr. amer akmal.

he is a true and sincere friend, an entity, that is disappearing in this day and age. as they say in the new country, when God made him, he broke the mold. i have known haji Sahib for the last twenty eight years, and it has been an honor.

We had planned the weekend after christmas 2007 to go to Pakistan and celebrate the golden fi fty

years. as fate would have it, Pakistan was thrown into chaos after the sad happenings of 27th December resulting in cancellation of all programs

We were 17 who did meet in Punjab club-house in lahore for a lunch and had time to say hello to each other. Professors masud Butt and ijaz ahsan (they deserve our thanks) called all the ones available on phone in lahore (11 came) and others who joined were, two from USa, one from england and one each from canada, Gujranwala and Sialkot. We started off fi rst with prayers for those who have left us (Dua by Hafi z AR khalid) followed by a short talk on (and in-

Mushaira Report by iftikhar nasim “ifti”in a cold evening of march i got a call from Dr. arif agha to arrange a mushaira for kemcaana retreat with local poets. By the way chicago is always cold let alone the month of march. chicago also known as a “city with broad shoulders” by poet lau-reate carl Sandberg has a broad variety of Urdu and Punjabi poets. it was a basically aimed to be an Urdu mushaira but i wanted

to make it a multi-lingual event, a tradition which was the pioneered by Baba-e-Punjabi Dr amanullah khan and Dr asaf Qadir. We had enjoyed great success with that theme in aPPna convention at orlando, Florida last year.

anyway, i called nazar naqvi, a chicagoan poet. a senior poet hazrat niaz Gulbergavi Sahib agreed to come to mushaira. his son mehboob ali khan also agreed to accom-

pany him. Dr. amanullah khan, Dr. naeem kohli, Dr. asaf Dar, Dr. Farhat abbas Khan, Dr. Javed Akbar, Dr. Mufi z Chauhan, iqbal nawaz and Shezad hashmi were also very kind in accepting the invitation. Dr. aman Rashid, consul General of Pakistan in chicago came to attend the mushaira. mr. Waheed Raza Bhatti visiting chicago with his trade entourage also joined us for this Mehfi l.

Dr. amanullah khan, Dr. Sara Walker and Dr. Zarina muzaffar dis-cussed how we can help in improving the education of the medical students and post-graduate trainees. Various ideas were put forth, foremost of which are:

kemU having a sister relationship with •

I started the fi rst “Daur” of Mushaira with my own Ghazal of Punjabi which i dedicat-ed to Dr. amanullah khan and then read my Urdu ghazals. the guest attendees who were on boat cruise then suddenly started pouring in. Dr. naeem kohli did the nazamat (con-ducting) of mushaira. Second Daur started with talawat by nadeem malik. mushaira stayed in full swing until 3:30 AM. Audi-ence enjoyed the poetry of all the poets. Dr. aman Rashid gave a beautiful speech at the end. the night was also made more taste-ful with complementary coffee/tea, samosas, mithai and “meethay Pan”. this was one of the best mushaira in chicago. many listeners logged in to a complementary webcast pro-vided by www.vmeetlive.com.

CME Program: (Report by Dr. Zarina muzaffar) the cme program for the 3 day kemcaa-na retreat held in chicago over the memo-rial Day weekend at the Rosemont conven-tion center was held on Saturday morning. the speakers represented a wide spectrum of academicians primarily from the chi-cago area but also featuring Past-President of american college of Physicians, Dr Sara Walker, who fl ew in from St Louis and par-ticipated in the entire program. her subject was the management of Sle. Professors nicolas emanuele and Regina Walker from loyola University medical center talked on the modern day management of diabetes and snoring respectively. Dr Pervez Rasul had a delightful presentation on the history of cataract surgery in Pakistan. Drs Richard harris and Dr michael herzog spoke on the management of erectile dysfunction and the overactive bladder respectively. all in all, the entire program was well received. one area of criticism could be the relatively sparse attendance for so well organized and infor-mative a program with national standard meeting level talks. Should future programs simply feature sponsored lectures?

Strategic Session: (Report by Dr. mubashar Rana)the Strategic sessions were held in 2 sessions on Saturday, 5/24 and Sunday, 5/25.the Saturday session started with a Seminar on curriculum change and Development of Gme Program at kemU. a video presenta-tion from Pakistan was made by Professor

on Sunday morning, the Strategic session started with brainstorming on how we can increase attendance at our meetings, espe-cially the Summer meeting. it was decided that the upcoming annual General Body Meeting on 6/27 should end at 3:30 PM. Rest of the time kemcaana and aPPna will jointly hold a Seminar on “community empowerment through education”. Dr. mahmood alam, the President of aPPna was also present during this discussion and agreed with the idea of the joint seminar.

Various other committees presented their brief report which was followed by dis-cussion and brainstorming on the action items.
