CHAPTER 2

HISTORY OF THE COMPANY

The history of KELTRON – Kerala State Electronics Development Corporation

Ltd. - is a saga of innovation in electronics. From being a pioneer in 1973; to the role of a trend-

setter, today the Organization – Keltron - has been the catalysis for the development of

electronics industry in Kerala. The tag line launching a state owned electronics enterprise, more

than a quarter century ago, read “spearheading an electronics revolution in Kerala”. It was

indeed an experiment by Government of Kerala (The Industries minister Sri. TV Thomas & the

founder Chairman & Managing Director Sri. KPP Nambiar) to transform the laid-back,

picturesque Kerala state known for its spices, natural beauty, Kathakali and Onam boat races,

to an arena for industrial and technological development based primarily on Electronics.

That was in fact how Keltron was born headed by the founder Chairman & Managing Director

Sri. KPP Nambiar in the capital city of Kerala State – Thiruvananthapuram. Today he has an

unique position in the Indian Electronics scenario as the father of electronics in India.

Within five years of its inception, Keltron had set up a production centre in every

district of the state. More than 5,000 people were engaged directly or indirectly by Keltron for

the manufacture of electronic goods. The model of a state-owned electronics corporation was so

successful that several other states in India followed suit; launching their own electronics

development corporations.

A quarter century later, Keltron after having contributed significantly to the the

state and substantially to the Industrial community of the nation and to the exchequer, set about

transforming Trivandrum, the capital city of Kerala, into one of the major electronics hubs of the

country. Today the city is home to techno-park, the internationally known technology park, a

long cherished dream come true of the founder Chairman & Managing Director – Sri. KPP

9

Page 10: Keltron Os-Ajay Antony Mampilli

Nambiar - where thousands of talented men and women participate in the development of a

burgeoning information technology industry. Thus Keltron has in effect triggered a revolution

that still keeps churning out its benefits to individuals and institutions in different parts of the

world, touching different walks of human life and continuing in its quest to Innovate Products &

Processes and Services that would add further value to the livelihood areas of the country,

supporting real time industrial growth.

Keltron has been making things happen since 1973 starting with spearheading an

electronics revolution in the country to being the most sustainable electronics corporation in the

state sector. “ Relitronics” – that was the word used by for the products and services of Keltron

by the visionary founder i.e.: “Reliable Electronic products and services”. A strong infra-

structure, enterprising team of enthusiastic in-mates, innovative operational methods, accent on

quality and customer-orientation are the core competencies of the organization which has made

things happen all these years. Large pool of Experienced Technical man power, expertise in high

quality manufacturing is the direct result of the highly skilled, multi-disciplinary team of

graduate engineers, project managers and a skilled workforce with a proven track record in

complex precision manufacturing. Now the visibility of Keltron is very much evident.

Currently Keltron employs a work force of 2000 of which 400 are engineers who

possess extensive hands-on experience in technology integration and adoption, high-Tech

manufacturing operations and in managing turn-key projects. Man power at space electronics

section has been specially trained at Indian space Research Organization (ISRO) in high

reliability soldering, harnessing and QC. Keltron also provides technical man power to major

organization like ONGC and VSSC and collaborators like Hitachi Japan. Country wide sales

network - Keltron has an all India Sales network in place with full-fledged Marketing offices in

Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Trivandrum to provide the

quickest possible service to customer.

PRODUCT

1.PROGRAMMABLE LOGIC CONTROLLER

A Programmable Logic Controller, or PLC for short, is simply a special computer

device used for industrial control systems. They are used in many industries such as oil

refineries, manufacturing lines, conveyor systems and so on. Where ever there is a need to

control devices the PLC provides a flexible way to "softwire" the components together.

The basic units have a CPU (a computer processor) that is dedicated to run one program

that monitors a series of different inputs and logically manipulates the outputs for the desired

control.  They are meant to be very flexible in how they can be programmed while also providing

the advantages of high reliability (no program crashes or mechanical failures), compact and

economical over traditional control systems.

2.PNEUMATIC PRODUCTS GROUP (PNG)

The Pneumatic Business Group is engaged in the business of Pneumatic Actuators

using Power Cylinder. KELTRON is in the business of Pneumatic Actuators using Power

Cylinders since 1979. KELTRON Pneumatic Actuators are in service in almost all the Thermal

Power Plants, Captive Power Plants, and Steam Generating Units of various Process Plants etc.

These double acting pneumatic actuators accurately operate and position regulating devices such

as dampers, fan inlet vanes, rheostats, butterfly valves etc. KELTRON actuators can operate

outdoors in corrosive, dusty and high temperature atmosphere with a proper selection of

materials and accessories. To operate under such adverse conditions, they are fitted with a hard

chromium plated steel piston rod, stainless steel tubing and connections, suitable sealing, bellows

and coated with epoxy paint to make all these devices weather proof.

3.TOWED ARRAYS

Towed array sonar is a sonar array that is towed behind a submarine or surface ship. It is

basically a long cable, up to 5 km, with hydrophones that is trailed behind the ship when

deployed. The hydrophones are placed at specific distances along the cable. Towed arrays are

used for the detection of missiles and location of submarines

4 P’S OF MARKETING MIX

As Marketing Department n of every other organization here also they focus on the

marketing mix i.e.; 4P’s which are this;

1. Product

2. Price

3. Place

4. Promotion

Product

The product of KCL is the pcbs, arrays, pneumatics. These are industrial oriented product

which is a component of electronic goods like TV, Refrigerator, and Computers and defence

etc.

Price

The price of capacitors are fixed in such a way that is not too high, that customers

cannot afford it nor too low that they cannot incur the cost of production. Comparatively

the price of capacitors of KCL high but even then they are able to withstand in the

market because of the good quality. Price is fixed on the basis of the cost, demand and

competition.

20

Page 21: Keltron Os-Ajay Antony Mampilli

Place

KCL carries out their sales through

Authorized Dealers

Direct Sales

All over India KCL have dealers network. It has branches in cities namely; Ahmadabad,

Bangalore, Calcutta, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Trivandrum.

The company sells the product to authorized dealers who sell it to the retailers which

are sold by them to ultimate customers. Dealers are given discounts and the company

offers additional discounts in case of quick payment and to regular customers.

Company fixes target sales for the dealers and if they succeed in meeting the fixed

target they are offered commission at the end of the year. Some of their customers are

given discounts on the basis of the turnover which is termed as Turnover discount.

KCL is also engaged in direct sales to the customers in case it’s a bulk order.

Promotion

The product of KCL is a component which is an industrial product and therefore

they need not use any form of advertisement. But they do take part in exhibitions and

conduct seminars to promote their product. Thus they do not require huge investment for

sales promotion.

21

Page 22: Keltron Os-Ajay Antony Mampilli

MANUFACTURING DEPARTMENT

KCL has state of the art manufacturing facility equipped with latest automatic

and semiautomatic production machinery and test equipments. It has also the capability

to design and develop meeting national or international customer specifications. The

company has, for the first time in India, developed the technology for forming of high

and low voltage foils in its in-house forming plant. In fact, KCL is the only company

for manufacturing all Towed Arrays, Pneumatic Acculators, Programmable Logic Controllers

PNEUMATIC PRODUCTS GROUP (PNG)

KELTRON Pneumatic Actuators are preferred by OEMs like Boiler manufacturers

(BHEL, ALSTOM, THERMAX, IJT, CVL, etc.) as well as Boiler Auxiliaries (Fan / SADC /

SCOOP Tube Coupling) manufacturing (C.DOCTAIRE, VOITH, BCPL, BILT, PEMPRIL,

etc.). The Group has supplied about 35,000 units of Pneumatic Actuators and they are working in

almost all the Power Plants spread all over in India.

22

Page 23: Keltron Os-Ajay Antony Mampilli

PNEUMATIC POWER CYLINDERS

KELTRON CONTROLS manufactures a wide range of pneumatic instruments in

collaboration with Control Bailey. Pneumatic Power Cylinders manufactured by KELTRON

CONTROLS have been installed around 25,000 locations all over India at different power plants

and process plants.

Pneumatics is a section of technology that deals with the study and application of

pressurized gas to effect mechanical motion.

Pneumatic systems are extensively used in industry, where factories are commonly

plumbed with compressed air or compressed inert gases. This is because a centrally located and

electrically powered compressor that powers cylinders and other pneumatic devices through

solenoid valves is often able to provide motive power in a cheaper, safer, more flexible, and

more reliable way than a large number of electric motors and actuators.

TOWED ARRAYS

Towed array sonar is a sonar array that is towed behind a submarine or surface ship. It is

basically a long cable, up to 5 km, with hydrophones that is trailed behind the ship when

deployed. The hydrophones are placed at specific distances along the cable. Towed arrays are

used for the detection of missiles and location of submarines

23

Page 24: Keltron Os-Ajay Antony Mampilli

A hydrophone (Greek "hydro" = "water" and "phone" = "sound") is a microphone

designed to be used underwater for recording or listening to underwater sound. Most

hydrophones are based on a piezoelectric transducer that generates electricity when subjected to

a pressure change. Such piezoelectric materials, or transducers can convert a sound signal into an

electrical signal since sound is a pressure wave. A hydrophone can "listen" to sound in air, but

will be less sensitive due to its design as having a good acoustic impedance match to water, the

denser fluid. Likewise, a microphone can be buried in the ground, or immersed in water if it is

put in a waterproof container, but will give similarly poor performance due to the similarly bad

acoustic impedance match.

PROGRAMMABLE LOGIC CONTROLLER

A Programmable Logic Controller, or PLC for short, is simply a special computer

device used for industrial control systems. They are used in many industries such as oil

refineries, manufacturing lines, conveyor systems and so on. Where ever there is a need to

control devices the PLC provides a flexible way to "softwire" the components together.

that monitors a series of different inputs and logically manipulates the outputs for the desired

control.  They are meant to be very flexible in how they can be programmed.

24

1. Raw Material Inspection

2. Patrol Inspection

3. Final Inspection

Raw Material Inspection

The materials which are imported for production are being inspected and the

quality is assured. Some materials require 100% conformance as specified. Those materials

that do not give 100% conformance are not accepted because it may adversely affect the

quality of the finished products. It is accepted on deviation confirming to the standard

fixed by the quality department. After the raw materials are imported it will be checked

with the company’s own standard, if there is major deviation, then at the same time if it

can be Utilized under certain conditions without affecting the end requirements, the

materials is cleared as acceptance on condition and is called conditional clearance.

Finance has been defined as the source of money. It studies the principle and raising,

administering and controlling of funds in business. The nature of financial management

refers to its functions, scope and objectives. The scope and coverage of financial

48

Page 49: Keltron Os-Ajay Antony Mampilli

Keltron is also into etching and forming of aluminum foil as part of

diversification, modernization and expansion plant.

FORMING OF ALUMINUM FOIL

Etching and formed aluminum foils are the major raw materials for the production

of electrolytic capacitors. The manufactures of electrolytic capacitors have been importing

this item since the technology for etching and forming of aluminum foil is not available

in India. The company for the first time in India developed the technology for forming

of high voltage and low voltage foil in its in-house forming plant. The plant was

designed and developed by the engineer of the company and forming machine is

fabricated locally.

ETCHING PROJECT

Etching technology for etching of aluminum foil is yet to establish in India. The

DOE approved the research project for 3 years costing Rs 40 lakhs for development of

high voltage etching technology in the company in-house plant. The company has already

developed indigenously the technology for the etching of low and medium gain

capacitors.

SWOT ANALYSIS

49

Page 50: Keltron Os-Ajay Antony Mampilli

The strength of Keltron is a team of experienced technocrats with smart supporting staffs. It is

the only manufacturer of capacitors in Kerala and its quality is known worldwide.

The weakness is the irregular performance of the organization due to the periodical

changes in government policies especially the imports policy. In public sector

organizations diversification is very slow unlike the private sector, which is also a

weakness. Also the machines are getting obsolete. Also in government organizations recruitment

is a problem.

The opportunities are as the industry is in the electronic field diversification of

products opens ample opportunities for the organization.

The threats are, globalization witnesses dumping of cheap electronic products in

India, which is a threat of Keltron as it is producing capacitors of a higher value.

CHAPTER 4

FINDINGS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

50

Page 51: Keltron Os-Ajay Antony Mampilli

FINDINGS

Keltron produces high quality products but at a comparatively higher price than its

competitors.

As keltron imports Raw material, import cost is high leading to a loss as the sales price is

not able to cover the loss.

Globalization has had a bad effect on the company.

Government control has also a bad effect on the company, being there has been no

recruitment since many years.

Even though Keltron has short comings, being an electronic goods manufacturer it has

every chance to improve.

RECOMMENDATIONS

The company should try to use its production capacity to the maximum.

The company should try to sell it product at competitive price.

Reduction of cost is a must for the company to survive.

There is a vast scope if the company focus on the IC capacitors since the present demand

is high and is expected to be so in the coming years.

CHAPTER 5

51

Page 52: Keltron Os-Ajay Antony Mampilli

CONCLUSIONS

A nation’s future and its ability to compute in the global market depend greatly

on how it generates new ideas and innovations in science and technology. Keltron has

initiated steps to create a knowledge center that would catalyze the process of knowledge

assimilation as well its dispensation. Keltron is one of the leading manufacturing

companies in Kerala. It is an ISO 9001 certified functioning company. It has always been able

to provide high quality products. It also has a super Research and Design section that help

in providing capacitors according to the needs of the customers.

It has a committed set of technocrats who work tirelessly for the accomplishment

of the goals of the company. The company provides employment for the handicapped

people giving them high respect. It has a very eco-friendly surrounding helping its

employees to keep a cool atmosphere.

Keltron after its bad play has found a stage where it can make profits. As an

electronic goods manufacturer, it has a bright future ahead, a future belonging to

innovation and simplicity of electronics.
