Words to Ponder

Members and Friends of Friedland,

I saw a sign out in front of a church the other day, and it said something that may help explain a lot about our churches. The sign’s message was “No perfect people allowed here.” That made me think that maybe we should be clearer about who we are trying to reach with our message both to those on the outside and as well as to those within our community. Could it be that we only want those folks who “have it all together?” Is this the message that we really want to send to everyone? Or perhaps we have the view that God is at work within us and that sharing the Good News of Jesus includes the goal of co-operating with His Spirit to become a new creation out of the person that we are currently. However, there is also a chance that our stubbornness is at work. We really aren’t interested in the change that God wants to produce in our attitudes. We don’t want to admit that God has something else in mind for His people. In other words, any change may be good for other people, but we are quite satisfied with ourselves just the way we are, thank you very much.

But the message on the sign reminds us that God is at work in us in ways that we do not fully understand; some changes need to occur because we are not yet where God wants us to be. This is why we need to be part of the community of faith, i.e. the church that meets regularly to worship, to serve, to study God’s book, and thus seeks to grow and to go out into our world, living out our faith as we are being transformed by His Spirit, not by the world.

We can’t do any of these things when we are isolated from the people who, like us, are still in need of the Savior’s presence and help and who are still in need of other imperfect people. Rather than saying we are not yet there, how about this: What if we say, “For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s workmanship…” (Ephesians 2:8,9) So, we are not perfect, but we are Saved by Grace with God still working with us, in us, and through us for His glory.

Blessings,

Pastor Wayne

My experience at the Unity Mission Conference has reinforced my

concept of Moravian missions. We do it out of love for our neighbor

and guided by the Holy Spirit. There is so much need out there; from

right outside our church to the end of the world. God is calling us to be

his witnesses of love and reconciliation in a broken world. We, as

Christians, have the Great Commission to obey and, as Moravians, we

have a great mission heritage to continue. “Our Lamb Has Conquered,

Let Us Follow Him” “Nuestro Cordero ha vencido: sigámosle” “Wan

shipka luhpya pura luan: ai nina blikpi” “Mwana kondoo ameshinda:

tumfuate”

You may wonder why the Mission Committee has been writing about

the Unity of the Brethren (Moravian Church) in the past months. The

reason is to remind you that we are part of a larger Christian

community. So, now that you have refreshed your knowledge of

Moravian history and are aware of how many provinces we have in the

worldwide Unity, let me share part of my experience with them.

My experience in November, 2017 at the Unity Mission Conference

was truly a blessing. It was wonderful to physically see and hug people

that I do not normally see because of the geographic distances and it

was awesome to meet new brothers and sisters from the Unity.

There were two things that caught my attention during the conference,

one of which was that we have Moravians in India. How many of you

knew that? During their presentation they shared part of their story,

they work in an area where Christianity is not well received and they

literally risk their life for the sake of sharing the Gospel. I am still in

contact with them through Facebook (thankful for technology that can

get us closer). They are working hard for God’s kingdom and I admire

them for that. The other thing that got my attention was the great

amount of youth representatives present at the conference. It was

wonderful to see our Unity youth in action and interaction with each

other and with the different topics. It is normally said that the youth is

the future of the church but I got see that we have a great present with

them involved now!

My role as part of the Unity Youth Committee was to be part of a

panel entitled, “Youth in Mission.” This experience was a blessing!

We had two sessions which were comprised of very diverse people.

The first one was full of youth who were eager to not only spread

God’s love with words but with actions. The second one was mainly

older brothers and sisters who were interested in how to support their

youth in their church and community. The panel was representative of

the provinces of Jamaica, Czech Republic, South Africa, and North

America/Peru.

It was a wonderful overall experience filled with very educational

lectures/essays, great panels and devotionals. However, I believe my

favorite part in international conferences like these is always the time

spent getting to know people. For me, those times were during meals.
