It is very important to set the correcttemperature for storing food in theappliance. Micro-organisms will causefood which is not stored at the correct

temperature to deteriorate rapidly.Temperature influences the growth rateof these micro-organisms. Reducingthe temperature reduces their growthrate.

The temperature in the appliance willrise:

the more often the door is openedand the longer it is kept open,

the more food that is stored in it,

the warmer the food is which is beingput into it,

the higher the ambient temperaturesurrounding the appliance. The appliance is designed for use in

specific ambient temperatures(climate ranges). Do not use inambient temperatures for which it isnot designed.

    . . . temperature in therefrigerator section

    We recommend a temperature of 5 C

in the middle of the refrigerator.

    . . . in the freezer section

To freeze fresh food and to store frozenfood for a long time, a temperature of-18 C is required. At this temperaturethe growth of micro-organisms isgenerally halted. As soon as the

temperature rises above -10 C, themicro-organisms become active in thefood again so that it cannot be kept aslong. For this reason, partially defrosted

or defrosted food must not be re-frozen.Food may be re-frozen once it hasbeen cooked, as the high temperaturesachieved when cooking destroy most

    micro-organisms.

    Setting the temperature

The temperatures for the refrigeratorand the freezer sections are set with thetemperature selector button.

^ Press the temperature buttonrepeatedly until the indicator light forthe temperature you want lights up inthe temperature display for therefrigerator section.

The temperature will be adjustedcontinuously with each press of thebutton.

When the refrigerator section is set to5 C , the freezer section will have anaverage temperature of -18 C.

The temperature display on thecontrol panel always shows the

    required temperature.

Your appliance has been fitted with awarning system which ensures that thetemperature in the freezer sectioncannot rise unnoticed and to avoid

energy being wasted if a door is leftopen.

    Temperature alarm

An alarm will sound if the temperaturein the freezer section becomes toowarm. The temperature display and thealarm indicator light will also flash.

The temperature the appliance is set atdetermines the temperature theappliance recognises as being toowarm.

The alarm will sound and the alarmindicator and temperature display willflash, for example,

if the freezer section door has beenleft open for a while, e.g. in order toload, re-arrange or take food out.

when freezing large amounts of foodat once.

in the event of a power cut.

Depending on the temperature in thefreezer, you should check the condition

of the food. If food has defrosted orstarted to defrost, check that it is stillsafe to use, and if so, use it as quicklyas possible. Defrosted food may onlybe re-frozen after it has been cooked.

    Door alarm

The alarm will sound if the freezer

section or refrigerator section door isleft open for more than approx. 60seconds.

    Activating the alarm system

The alarm system is always active. Itdoes not have to be switched on

    manually.

    Switching the alarm off early

The alarm will stop and the indicatorlight will go out when the temperaturereaches the correct level again. However, if the noise disturbs you, youcan switch the alarm off before this if

    you wish.

^ Press the alarm off button.

The alarm will stop. The indicator light will stay on until

    Different storage zones

Due to the natural circulation of the airin the appliance, there are different

temperature zones in the refrigerator.Cold, heavy air sinks to the lowestsection of the appliance. Make use ofthe different zones when placing foodin the appliance.

    Warmest area

The warmest area is in the top section

of the door. Use this for storing butterand cheese.

    Coldest area

The coldest area in a refrigerator isdirectly above the vegetablecontainers.

Use this for all delicate and highly

    perishable food, e.g.

    fish, meat, poultry,

    sausage products, ready meals,

dishes or baked goods containingeggs or cream,

fresh dough, cake mixtures, pizza orquiche dough,

    soft cheese and other dairyproducts,

pre-packed vegetables and otherfresh food with a label stating itshould be kept at a temperature ofapprox. 4 C.

Do not store explosive materials in

    the appliance or any products

containing propellants (e.g. spraycans). Danger of explosion.

If storing alcohol with a high

percentage proof, make sure it is

    tightly closed, and store upright.

If storing food which contains a lot offat or oil, make sure that it does not

come into contact with plasticcomponents as this could cause

    stress cracks.

Food must not touch the back wall of

the refrigerator, as it may freeze tothe back wall.

To allow air to circulate efficiently,

do not pack food too closelytogether in the appliance.

Food which should not bestored in a refrigerator

Not all food is suitable for storing in arefrigerator at temperatures below 5C, assome food is sensitive to cold.

Cucumbers, for example, become glassy, aubergines bitter and potatoes sweet.Tomatoes and oranges loose their aromaand the peel on citrus fruits hardens.Food which is sensitive to coldincludes:

    Pineapple, avocado, bananas,pomegranate, mango, melon,

papaya, passion fruit, citrus fruit(such as lemons, oranges, mandarins, grapefruit).

Fruit which is not yet ripe

    18/48

    Aubergines/egg plant, cucumber,potatoes, peppers/capiscum,tomatoes, courgettes/zucchini

    Some hard cheeses, e.g. Parmesan

    When shopping for food

The freshness of food when first placedin the appliance is an important factorin determining how long it stays fresh.Time out of the refrigerator e.g. duringtransportation should be kept to a

minimum. For example, do not allowfood to stay in a hot car for too long.Once food has started to deteriorate, this process cannot be reversed. Aslittle as two hours outside therefrigerator can cause food to startdeteriorating.

    Storing food correctly

Store food covered or packaged. Thiswill prevent food smells from affectingother foods, food from drying out, andalso any cross-contamination ofbacteria. The growth of bacteria, suchas salmonella, can be avoided bysetting the correct temperature andmaintaining good standards of hygiene.

    Fruit and vegetables

Fruit and vegetables may be storedloose in the vegetable containers.

However, you should bear in mind thataromas and flavours can transfer fromone type of food to another (e.g. carrotsabsorb the smell and flavour of onionsvery easily). Some food also gives off anatural gas (ethylene) which speeds upthe rate at which other food perishes. Some fruit and vegetables reactstrongly to this gas and should not be

    stored together.

Examples of fruit and vegetableswhich produce a large amount ofthis natural gas are:

Apples, apricots, pears, nectarines, peaches, plums, avocado, figs, blueberries, melons and beans.

Examples of fruit and vegetableswhich react strongly to the naturalgases given off by other types offruit and vegetables are:

Kiwis, broccoli, cauliflower, Brusselssprouts, mangos, honeydew melons, apples, apricots, cucumbers, tomatoes, pears, nectarines andpeaches.

Example: Broccoli should not bestored with apples, as applesproduce a large amount of naturalgas to which broccoli is verysensitive. The result is a shorter thanexpected storage time for thebroccoli.

    Unpacked meats and vegetables

Unpackaged meat and vegetablesshould be stored separately. To avoid

any microbiologicalcross-contamination, these foods mayonly be stored together if they arewrapped.

    Protein rich foods

Please note that foods rich in proteindeteriorate faster than others.Shellfish, for example, deterioratesfaster than fish, and fish deterioratesfaster than meat.

    Meat

Meat should be stored unwrapped.(Undo wrappings slightly to leave meat

loosely covered, and leave containersopen). This permits air to circulatearound the meat, allowing the surfaceto dry slightly, which helps prevent thegrowth of bacteria. To prevent the riskof bacterial cross-contamination, do notlet meat come into direct contact withother foods.

    Moving the shelves

The shelves can be adjusted accordingto the height of the food.

^ Raise the shelf, and pull it forwardsslightly until the notch at the side is inline with the shelf support. It can thenbe raised or lowered to the requiredlevel.

The raised edge at the back must faceupwards to prevent food from touchingthe back of the appliance and freezing

    to it.

Stoppers prevent the shelves frombeing dislodged by mistake.

    Split shelf

In order to accommodate tall items inthe appliance, one of the shelves is

divided. The front section can bepushed under the rear section.

^ Push the rear half of the glass shelfup slightly from below.

^ At the same time, pull the front half ofthe glass shelf forwards slightly andthen push it carefully under the rearhalf.

    To move the split shelf:

^ Take both halves of the split glassshelf out,

^ fit the two brackets onto the supportson either side at the required height,

^ and push the glass shelves in one

after the other. The shelf with the raised edge mustbe at the back.

    Maximum freezing capacity

To ensure that fresh food placed in thefreezer freezes through to the core as

quickly as possible, the maximumfreezing capacity must not beexceeded. The maximum freezingcapacity for freezing within a 24-hourperiod is given on the data plate:"Freezing capacity ....kg/24 hrs".

    Freezing fresh food

Fresh food should be frozen as quicklyas possible. This way the nutritionalvalue of the food, its vitamin content, appearance and taste are not impaired.

Food which takes a long time to freezewill lose more water from its cells, whichthen shrink.During the defrosting process, only

some of this water is reabsorbed by thecells; the rest collects around the food.

If food is frozen quickly, the cells haveless time to lose moisture, so theyshrink less. As there is not so muchmoisture loss, it is easier for the food toreabsorb it during the defrostingprocess, and very little water collectsaround the defrosted food.

    Storing frozen food

When buying frozen food to store inyour freezer, check

that the packaging is not damaged,

    the use-by date,

the temperature at which the frozenfood is being stored in the shop. Thelength of time it can be kept isreduced if it has been stored at atemperature warmer than -18 C.

^ Buy frozen food once you havefinished the rest of your shopping, and wrap it in newspaper or use acool bag or cool box to transport it.

^ Store it in the freezer as soon aspossible.

    Never re-freeze partially or fully

defrosted food. Consume defrostedfood as soon as possible as it will

lose its nutritional value and spoil if

left for too long. Defrosted food may

only be re-frozen after it has been

    cooked.

    Home freezing

Only freeze fresh food which is in agood condition.

    Hints on home freezing

The following types of food aresuitable for freezing:Fresh meat, poultry, game, fish, vegetables, herbs, fresh fruit, dairyproducts, pastry, leftovers, eggyolks, egg whites and a range of

pre-cooked meals. The following types of food are not

suitable for freezing:Grapes, lettuce, radishes, sourcream, mayonnaise, eggs in theirshells, onions, whole raw apples andpears.

To retain colour, taste and vitamin C,

vegetables should be blanched afterthey have been trimmed andwashed. To blanch: bring a large saucepan ofwater to the boil, immerse thevegetables in the fast boiling waterfor 2-3 minutes, depending onvariety. Remove, and plunge intoice-cold water to cool quickly. Drain

    and pack ready for freezing.

Lean meat freezes better than fattymeat, and can be stored forconsiderably longer.

To prevent chops, steaks, cutlets orrolled meat from freezing together insolid blocks when packed, separatewith a sheet of plastic freezer film.

Do not season fresh foods orblanched vegetables beforefreezing. Only season cooked foodlightly before freezing, but careshould be taken as the taste of somespices alters when frozen.

Do not place hot foods or drinks inthe freezer. This causes alreadyfrozen food to thaw, and increasesthe energy consumptionconsiderably. Allow hot foods anddrinks to cool down before placing

    them in the freezer.

    Packing

    ^ Freeze food in portions.

Unsuitable packing material- wrapping paper- grease-proof paper

    - cellophane- bin bags- plastic carrier bags

Suitable packing material- plastic freezer film- freezer bags- aluminium foil- freezer containers

^ Expel as much air as possible frombags etc. before sealing them, toprevent freezer-burn on food.

^ Close the packaging tightly with- rubber bands- plastic clips- string or bag ties- freezer tape.

Freezer bags may also be sealedusing home heat sealing kits.

^ Make a note of the contents and thedate of freezing on the packaging.

Before placing food in the freezer

    section

^ When freezing more than 2 kg offresh food, switch on the Superfreeze function for some time beforeplacing the food in the freezer (see"Super freeze").This also helps to prevent food that isalready in the freezer from starting to

    defrost.

    Placing food in the freezer

    The following maximum capacities

must be observed: freezer drawer = 25 kg

glass cold plate = 35 kg

Food to be frozen must on noaccount touch food which is already

    frozen to avoid partial thawing.

^ Make sure that the packaging andcontainers are dry to prevent themsticking together when frozen.

    Freezing small amounts of food

Place the food in the upper freezerdrawers.

^ Place the food flat in the bottom ofthe drawers so that it freezes throughto the core as quickly as possible.

Please note that when removing the

    drawers, the lowest freezer drawer

must always remain in the freezer.

When placing food on the glass coldplate make sure it does not obstruct

the ventilation gaps at the back. This is important for problem-free

    operation and normal energy

    consumption.

    Maximum freezing capacity (seedata plate)

^ Remove the upper freezer drawers.

^ Place the food flat on the upper glasscold plates so that it freezes throughto the core as quickly as possible.

    Once frozen:

^ Place the frozen food in the freezer

drawers and push them back into theappliance.

    Large items

If you wish to freeze large items suchas a turkey or game, the glass coldplates between the drawers can beremoved.

    Defrosting

Frozen food can be defrosted indifferent ways:

    in a microwave oven,

in an oven using the "Fan" or"Defrost" setting,

    at room temperature,

in the refrigerator (the cold given offby the frozen food helps to keep theother food cold),

    in a steam oven.

Poultry It is particularly important toobserve food hygiene rules whendefrosting poultry. Do not use the liquidfrom defrosted poultry. Pour it awayand wash the container it was in, thesink and your hands. Danger ofsalmonella poisoning.

Ensure that meat and fish (e.g mince, chicken, fish fillets) do not come intocontact with other foods whiledefrosting. Catch the liquid anddispose of it carefully.

Fruit should be defrosted at roomtemperature in its packaging, or in acovered bowl.

Most vegetables can be cooked whilestill frozen. Just put straight into boilingwater or hot fat. The cooking time isslightly less than that of freshvegetables due to changes in the cellstructure.

    Never re-freeze partially or fully

    defrosted food. Consume defrosted

food as soon as possible as it willlose its nutritional value and spoil if

left for too long. Defrosted food may

only be re-frozen after it has been

    cooked.

    Ice cubes

^ Fill the ice tray three quarters full withwater, and place it in the bottom ofone of the drawers.

^Once frozen, use a blunt instrument, for example a spoon handle, toremove the ice tray from the freezer.

^ Ice cubes can be removed easilyfrom the tray by twisting the traygently or by holding it under coldrunning water for a short while.

Cooling drinksDo not store cans or bottles containingcarbonated drinks or liquids whichcould freeze in the freezer. The cans orbottles could explode.

When cooling non-carbonated drinksquickly in the freezer, make sure bottlesare not left in for more than one hour,

    otherwise they could burst.

    Refrigerator section

    The refrigerator defrosts automatically.

Condensate and frost can build up onthe back wall of the refrigerator sectionwhilst it is in use. You do not need toremove this, as it will defrost andevaporate automatically with thewarmth generated by the appliance.

The condensate is drained away via achannel and drain hole into anevaporation system at the back of the

    appliance.

    Ensure that the condensate channel

and drain hole are kept clean and

    are never blocked so that

    condensate can flow away without
