BMP Implementation Schedule to meet Goal
Watershed Plan Updates• 9-Element Watershed Plans Updated Every 5-7 Years
• New and Revised TMDL Information Incorporated
• WRAPS Groups want to Review• Targeted Areas• Targeted Practices
Our vision is 'healthy Kansans living in safe and sustainable environments'. The state belongs to all of us - "Kansas Don't Spoil It"
Watershed Plan Updates• Milford Reservoir Eutrophication TMDL Established
2014 • TP Load Reduction Increased 1000% from Original
Watershed Plan Goal• Implementation Tables Must be Revised Dramatically and
Length of Plan Extended• Special Case - Design Plan to Address Kansas Portion of
Loading, Without Meeting Water Quality Standard
Our vision is 'healthy Kansans living in safe and sustainable environments'. The state belongs to all of us - "Kansas Don't Spoil It"
Watershed Plan Updates• Targeted Areas
• Focus on Source of Loading• Balance Between Focus and Program Implementation• Originally HUC 12 Level – Transitioning to HUC 12/Riparian
Corridor Targeting Approach
Our vision is 'healthy Kansans living in safe and sustainable environments'. The state belongs to all of us - "Kansas Don't Spoil It"
Watershed Plan Updates• Targeted Practices
• Focus on Efficiency of Load Reduction from Existing BMPs• Incorporate New Practices
• Soil Health Principles • Precision Nutrient Management• Innovative Livestock Practices – Whatever it Takes!
• Not Traditional Soil and Water Conservation• Must Focus on Impairment Being Addressed
Our vision is 'healthy Kansans living in safe and sustainable environments'. The state belongs to all of us - "Kansas Don't Spoil It"
Watershed Plan Updates – Aerial Assessments
• Examining Aerial Images to identify NPS areas of interest
• WMS GIS Webmap Application developed to look at aerial images and mark them – Utilize NPS knowledge and not GIS skills
• No geospatial analysis is being done, only using professional judgment to identify areas for further investigation
Our vision is 'healthy Kansans living in safe and sustainable environments'. The state belongs to all of us - "Kansas Don't Spoil It"
Aerial Assessments• Information Provided
• One Page Assessment Overview• methodology• data sources• practice statistics
• ArcGIS and Google Earth Layers
• High Resolution PDF Maps• selectable layer functionality • not internet dependent• image resolution equal to when assessment was conducted
• Excel Spreadsheet of Identified Area Information
Our vision is 'healthy Kansans living in safe and sustainable environments'. The state belongs to all of us - "Kansas Don't Spoil It"
Aerial Assessments• Many Locations and Landowners are Known to the
Members of the Stakeholder Leadership Team• Spatial Distribution and Area Statistics are Additional
Tool Inform Plan Targeted Areas and Practices –Combined with Existing Tools
• Images Draw Attention to Specific Problems• Very Difficult to Argue with an Image• Focus Watershed Group to Deal with WQ Impairment
Our vision is 'healthy Kansans living in safe and sustainable environments'. The state belongs to all of us - "Kansas Don't Spoil It"
Aerial Assessments – Coordinator Development• Aerial Assessments have Reinforced the Need of Watershed
Coordinators to Develop Mapping Skills• Gives Coordinator Great Information to Approach Landowner• Need to View Imagery to Understand Water Quality Issues from the
Whole Farm Scale – RMS Planning• Again, Imagery Helps to Focus Watershed Group on the Actual Source
of the Pollution
• Google Earth Pro is Useful Tool• Free Software• Robust Imagery Over Time and Useful Tools – 3rd Party Data Sets• KDHE Can Provide Support
Our vision is 'healthy Kansans living in safe and sustainable environments'. The state belongs to all of us - "Kansas Don't Spoil It"
Coordinator Development• Just Starting the Mapping Skills Development with Coordinators• Already Having Positive Impact• Allows Coordinators to Provide Technical Input on Practice
Implementation and Not Simply Program Administration
Our vision is 'healthy Kansans living in safe and sustainable environments'. The state belongs to all of us - "Kansas Don't Spoil It"
Soil Health Principles• Reduce Disturbance – Never Tillage• Living Plant Roots - Cover Crops, Companion Crops• Reduce Fertilizer, Herbicide, Insecticide Application • Integrate Grazing
Our vision is 'healthy Kansans living in safe and sustainable environments'. The state belongs to all of us - "Kansas Don't Spoil It"
Soil Health Principles• Soil Health Improves Water Quality
• Reduces Erosion • .5 – 1 tons/acre/year
• Cover Crops Uptake and Cycle Nutrients in Field • 30% P Reduction
• Increasing SOM Reduces Total Volume of Runoff• Less capacity to transport sediment and nutrient pollution
• Grazing Often Relocates Unconfined Animal Feeding Sites• Location and Distribution are Improved
Our vision is 'healthy Kansans living in safe and sustainable environments'. The state belongs to all of us - "Kansas Don't Spoil It"
Future of WRAPS• Focus Work on the WQ Problem that needs Solved• Combination of Management and Structural
Practices• Treat Vast Acreages with Soil Health Principles• Fix Degraded or Troublesome Spots with Structures• Watershed Coordinators and Leadership Team
Volunteers Drive WRAPS Program

Graywater System Specification Created in February2014
Our Mission: To protect and improve the health and environment of all Kansans.
•Purpose of the Graywater System Specification is to offer guidance to local governments as well as homeowners on a recommended type of graywater reuse system that allows for the benefits of graywater reuse for subsurface irrigation while minimizing human health and environment risks.
Graywater System Specification Created in February2014
Our Mission: To protect and improve the health and environment of all Kansans.
•Graywater is defined as wastewater from sources within single family residences, including showers, bathtubs, clothes‐washing machines, hand‐washing lavatories and sinks that are not used for disposal of hazardous or toxic ingredients.
•Any other source is prohibited. •Copy of the specification is listed on the KDHE/LEPP website •http://www.kdheks.gov/nps/lepp/
