“If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other”.

The underlying message of the film is relevant to today’s global and heterogeneous audience: As the world becomes a smaller place and there is an increase in crime, wars and intolerance, the other end of the spectrum – kindness, consideration and caring for fellow human beings – is on a downward spiral.

The film’s ambition is to inspire people to understand what the real values in life are – compassion, respect and love, not just on the surface but within the family and the environment.

In fact, after winning the Nobel Prize, Mother Teresa was asked by a journalist, “What can we do to promote world peace?” Her reply was simple: “Go home and love your family!”

The Movie’s Message

“Do not wait for leaders, do it alone; person to person.”

Objectives

✤ The Zariya Foundation was created in 2010 in Switzerland, followed by the Zariya Trust in India, and by a tax exemption scheme in the US. It intends to raise up to $ 4 Mio. to finance the making of a major motion picture based on the vision and key messages of Mother Teresa.

✤ Apart from the cost of production, the film is a non-profit venture, and the film proceeds will go to charitable institutions and foundations that work for the poor, the sick and abandoned or handicapped children.

4

✤ The assurance and advisory company Ernst & Young has been retained as auditor of the foundation and film production company to ensure complete financial transparency.

Vision and Goals

In telling Kavita’s and Teresa’s story, the Zariya Foundation has three goals:

1. INSPIRE audiences to create a personal vision and to stay with it through times of struggles and doubts.

2. TRANSFORM Mother Teresa’s vision to live with compassion, respect and love (“Love in Action”).

3. IMPROVE the condition of the poor: 100 % of the film’s profits will be donated to charitable institutions and foundations that work for the destitute, the sick, the handicapped and the abandoned children.

Pitch

A contemporary drama and epic biopic of Mother Teresa

Teresa and Kavita: two women's lives - passionate and uncompromising - woven over generations by two parallel stories.

Both women achieve their vocation in spite of serious personal doubts.

These intertwined stories present us Teresa, the woman behind the myth, in a totally new dimension.

Her loss of faith inspires the wild Kavita, a young Canadian woman of Indian origin, to discover true love and compassion in today’s Kolkata.

Synopsis

10

For Kavita, a spoiled modern young woman of Indian origin living in Toronto, love is an illusion. Between an unsatisfying romantic relationship, the plans of her parents to wed her according to Indian tradition and an unexpected pregnancy, Kavita is torn by inner conflicts.

Should she abort her baby or not?

Unable to take the radical medical step, Kavita decides to return to her birthplace, in order to find solace in the arms of Deepali - her now very old nanny - who took care of her as a child.

Deepali had herself been adopted as a child by Mother Teresa when she started working in the slums, in 1948. As Deepali narrates the stories of her past, Kavita starts to relive the beginnings of Teresa’s life in the slums of Calcutta.

11

For the young Mother Teresa, her life dramatically changes when she hears the voice of Jesus: he orders her to go work for the poor in the slums.

She doesn’t question this ordeal, as her love for Jesus and her compassion for the disabled and the poor mean everything. Following the call, she turns her back on her previous life and devotes herself to the poor in the slums of Calcutta.

But soon after creating her new order, the “Missionaries of Charity”, Teresa can’t hear the voice of her beloved Jesus anymore. She feels more and more abandoned by her lover, her husband, her guide…

She doubts the very existence of God.

She loses faith.

Synopsis (suite)

12

Hiding her torment behind the smiling face of the faithful, Teresa was in doubts for the rest of her life; but she continued her work nevertheless, with total dedication to the poorest of the poor. An act of faith in itself.

She only shared her loss by writing to a couple of confessors, letters that were made public only after her death, letters that Kavita learns about in present time.

The real human story of Mother Teresa inspires Kavita positively about how to go on with her pregnancy, her life, her lovers and her family.

She discovers compassion. She finds happiness.

The audience will be developed with different web platforms (Facebook, website, newsletters, NGO listings, associations working for the poor, volunteer platforms for India, etc.). This will increase the knowledge and publicity around the movie. When distributed online, the audience will already be there.

For the global communication we do benefit from the support and partnership with Prema Sagar, Vice Chair for Asia Pacific, Burson-Marsteller in New Delhi, a leading Asian public relations and public affairs firm that delivers integrated communications services to some of the best Indian and international companies worldwide.
