KATERI TEKAKWITHA

The First Native American Saint

EARLY LIFE

Born in 1656 to an

Algonquin Catholic

woman and a Mohawk

Chief.

Entire Family Killed at

age of four, do to

smallpox outbreak.

Adopted by uncle, who

is also a Mohawk chief

EARLY LIFE CONTINUED

At age eight she is promised to a young Mohawk boy.

Does not want to be married because she wants to dedicate her life to God.

At age ten her village is attacked be a French and Indian war party.

Moves to Caughnawagawere she lives for the next ten years.

CONVERSION

When Kateri is eighteen a Jesuit Missionary, named Father de Lamberville, establishes a Chapel within the Village.

Kateri is Baptized at the age of twenty by Father de Lamberville on Easter Sunday.

She is given the name Catherine, which is Kateri in Iroquois.

THE ESCAPE

In July 1677 Kateri

leaves Caughnawaga

to escape persicution

in her village.

She goes to a Catholic

Mission for Catholic

Native

Americans, called St.

Francis Xavier at Sault

Saint-Louis, near

Montreal.

LIFE IN THE MISSION

Kateri would help the sick and poor.

She would fashion wooden crosses and put them in the woods to remind her to pray to God.

She told stories about the Life of Jesus Christ to people.

March 25, 1679: Kateri makes her vow of Perpetual Virginity.

DEATH

Kateri dies in 1680 at the age of 24, do to health problems.

Kateri’s final words were, “Jesus, I love You.”

Her face is miraculously cleared of pox marks, that she received as a child during the smallpox epidemic in Ossernenon .

EXTRA INFORMATION

Kateri Tekakwitha was

declared Blessed by

the Catholic Church in

1980 by Pope John

Paul II.

She is being

Canonized a Saint on

October 21, 2012.
