„The Power of the Wilderness“ open forum

In relation with the Katla Geopark Spring Festival, Eldvötn - a coalition for nature preservation in Skaftárhreppur municipality - is hosting an open forum on the first day of summer, April 19th from 13:00-17:00 (1:00PM - 5:00PM) at Kirkjuhvol in Kirkjubæjarklaustur. The topic of the forum will evolve around "The power of the wilderness" - our relation with it and the benefits it has for the community. .

First Day Of Summer with Eldstó Art Café at Hvolsvöllur.

Eldstó Art Café invites you to enjoy a wonderful concert 19:30-22:00 (7:30PM - 10:00PM). The band "Remedía" will be playing along with the winner of 2017 FSU's singing competition, Magdalena Eldey Þórisdóttir, from the college of South Iceland).

Friday - April 20th Hand crafted tanning

Kristbjörg Hilmarsdóttir, a local wool farmer, invites you to her workshop at Þykkvabæjarklaustur on the eve of Friday between 19:00-22:00 (7:00-10:00 PM). There she will go over her tanning procedures in her unique workshop, located in the storehouse next to Nonna og Brynjuhús Guesthouse at Þykkvabæjarklaustur. A unique oppurtunity!

Saturday - April 21st A scenic off-road trail run around Hjörleifshöfði, east of Vík í Mýrdal.

East of Vík village, the run has two courses: 7 km and 11 km - timed. The course goes around Hjörleifshöfði, a majestic promontory east of Vík í Mýrdal, ending with a 200m climb before reaching the flatland and the finish-line. More information and registration found at www.hlaup.is

Tuesday - April 24th Hike with Ferðafélag Mýrdælinga.

The walk goes to Kvernufoss waterfall. Difficulty: 1 shoe. We meet at 19:30 (7:30 PM) outside of Bank Arion in Vík and the hike is estimated to take around 1-2 hrs. More info at: myrdalur@gmail.com .

Víkurskóli Elementary School. Skaftfellingur ship and its impact on the lives of locals 100 years ago.

The students of Víkurskóli introduce a project in relation with the 100 yer birthday of Skaftfellingur trading vessel. The show will be in story-form focusing on the hardship, isolation and the changes people went through during these times. Further information on event will be announced later.

Friday - April 27th Relics and artifacts forum (Minjaþing) in Skaftárhreppur municipality .

Held at Kirkjuhvol in Kirkjubæjarklaustur from 12:30-16:30. An introduction of relics and studies from Skaftárhreppur municipality where the work "Ancient traveling paths in W-Skaftafell county around the turn of the century in 1900" will be indroduced. Northern Lights - fairy tales and folklore

Kötlusetur invites you to a magical photo exhibition at Skaftfellingsskemman at 17:00 (5 PM). Located at Víkurbraut 28 in Vík. The exhibition gives the viewer a glimpse of the magic of the northern lights, nature and folklore around Patricja Makowskas home in Iceland. Versatility, opposites and change is the undertext of the exhibition that captures the beauty our world has to offer. A picture is worth a thousand words! K.

Wednesday - May 2nd Orienteering with Vatnajökull National Park

The staff og Vatnajökull National Park host a game of orienteering around Skaftárstofa Visitor Centre in Kirkjubæjarklaustur. The event will be ongoing during the opening hours of Skaftárstofa between 09:00-17:00. The game is perfect for the younger generation though everyone is encouraged to participate! A certificate will be awarded to every participant along with three „the luck of the draw!“ prizes.

The Man and the Ocean.

The students of the kindergarten and elementary school in Vík invite you to see the show - The man and the ocean. The show connects events of the area with nature and history through theatre. Time will be announced later.

Thursday - May 10th Ascension Day

Hike with Ferðafélag Mýrdælinga

The hike will lead to Hólmardyngjur in Botnar. Difficulty: 1 shoe (wet area). The walk will start at 19:30 at the bank-plaza at Ránargata 1 in Vík í Mýrdal. Hike duration: 1-2 hrs.

Educational hike around Dyrhólaey

The hike is around 3 km and is of avarage difficulty. Sturdy shoes are reccommended. Narration will be in english and icelandic. The start of the hike will be at the WC facilities on Lágey at 14:00 (2 PM). A ranger from the Environmental Agency of Iceland will lead the hike.

Katla Geopark, Birdlife Iceland, Icelandic Institute of Natural History and South Iceland Research Center offer a field trip and education at 10:00-16:00 in Hvolsvöllur (10 AM - 4 PM). A more detailed schedule will be announced later on the homepage/Facebook of Katla Geopark. .

Friday - May 18th Skaftfellingur 100 years

Celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the trading vessel Skaftfellingur in the Skaftfellingsskemma at Víkurbraut 28 in Vík. From 17:00-20:00 (5 PM - 8 PM). Concerts, speeches and art galleries. Local food and refreshments. A great oppurtunity to experience the history and culture of Icelanders along with a sample of the local community and cuisine. .

The Icelandic Lava Show - Open House

A unique volcanic exhibition where glowing hot lava is poured over ice with the accompanying visual spectacle. The founders would like to invite you to experience examples of the show at 12:00 (12 PM) and 14:00 (2 PM). Located at Víkurbraut 5 in Vík. Hot and delicious Lava soup from the Soup Company (Súpufélagið) for those daring enough.
