Dear Parents and Guardians,

Our first newsletter for 2016 gives us an opportunity to celebrate the highlights of the year to date. Firstly, I would like to extend my congratulations and best wishes to all members of our graduating class of 2015. Our VCE Dux, Tanya Abraham, and VCAL Dux, Luke Azzopardi, deserve recognition for their outstanding achievements. Our VCE median study score of 29 is evidence of our strong commitment to ensuring the best outcomes for our students, and is consistent with our sustained improvement over the past few years. Similarly, our excellent completion rate for VCAL is to be celebrated. Our strategic focus on enhancing the level of communication between the school and our community has been at the forefront of our work. This has been evidenced through the following:

• Parents receive the Weekly News outlining essential information, key dates and a message from the Principal on a weekly basis via email. It is also available on the school web page.

• The Newsletter will be distributed via email and the web page every four weeks. In addition to articles about recent and upcoming school events, it will also contain a section detailing community events.

• Teachers have been asked to share information relating to all classes with both parents and students via Compass. In doing so parents will be privy to details about lessons, including timelines and roadmaps. Parents are encouraged to use this information to discuss the academic expectations with their child.

• Our Facebook page is now becoming a daily communication medium. We encourage all parents who use Facebook to like the page to get important announcements.

• Our Compass portal continues to expand. Parents can approve excursions, check attendance, pay fees, access lesson plans, order school photos, and much more. The apps for both Android and iPhones are also greatly improved.

• The whole school assessment schedule has been posted on the College web page.• Parents are invited to participate in a Parents and Friends group, the first meeting

of which was held on Tuesday 23rd February. Participation in this group will give parents the opportunity to inform school processes and policy, support and provide feedback about initiatives and actively engage in the school community.

• A Communication Team has been formed to review our current communication processes.

Any and all feedback about any aspect of the college is welcomed. Please feel free to contact me via the main school number or make an appointment to meet with me to discuss any of the above.

An enrolment of 1200 students and 24 new staff in 2016 means that we have our largest cohort in many years. We are excited about the opportunities that this brings for our community. New staff bring new ideas, as do new parents and students. As such I would like to take this opportunity to invite our parents to contribute to the development of the college grounds by participating in our annual working bee on Saturday 19th March. This is an important event that not only allows us to pull together to beautify the grounds, but also gives us an opportunity to get to know parents and friends. The working bee will start at 8:00am and finish at 12:00pm. Even if you only have an hour to spare, please drop in!

Next week on Thursday 3rd March we have our annual Swimming Carnival at Doveton Pool in the Park which is situated on the corner of Tristania St and Kidds Rd, Doveton. This is a whole school event that we expect all students to attend. Students will be required to be sun smart by wearing a t-shirt over their bathers at all times, unless they are in the pool. Similarly, they should ensure thathey bring a hat. Parents are encouraged to come along and cheer from the sidelines.

I look forward to sharing more news about our whole school priorities in the next edition of the Weekly News.

Warm RegardsJo WastleActing Principal

Year 7 2017 Transition Information Nights• Thursday 17 March• Wednesday 27 April

Parents and students please note that we are holding the same event twice this year. This is to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to attend.

All the information and program documentation will be exactly the same at both events.

School Captains Message

We, Rachel Gedye and Matthew Harper-Gomm, are the Kambrya College School Captains for 2016 and we are very pleased to announce that the year has begun with an extremely encouraging tone. The beginning of the year has seen many changes sweep the school, with the most noticeable being the new school uniform. On the whole, it has received generally positive feedback both from within the school and throughout the broader community. It has helped depict our college in a new and confident light. Now, while this uniform change has thus far been only compulsory for Year 7 students, it will soon be implemented throughout the school in a staggered approach through the next few years until the entire student body is uniform. The ABC documentary crew has also lately finished its work at the school with a little extra footage being shot this year. We are very much looking forward to what will be an immensely exciting and insightful production from the ABC.

We also look forward to working closely with our recently appointed SRC Co-Presidents, Alex Chapman and Kennedy Hiroa-Maiava, as well as the broader SRC, to make some real impacts in the school this year. We aim to increase the community-mindedness of the College and to help make student leadership more open and constructive for all students.

If you happen to see either one of us around the school at any time, please do not hesitate to come and say hello and tell us about anything that you may have on your mind.

Thank you and good luck for 2016!

Matthew Harper-Gomm and Rachel Gedye, Kambrya College School Captains

On February 8th, Mr Liang and Miss Tang accompanied the Year 7 SEAL Mandarin class on a visit to Brentwood Park Primary School to celebrate Chinese New Year. They met with a Year 1 class who were eager to work with them to practice their Chinese language skills. Under the guidance of Miss Zhang, the Mandarin teacher at Brentwood Park, our students paired up with their young hosts to use a range of ingredients to make

dumplings. The students were also able to look a display of traditional Chinese crafts which are used with the Chinese New Year celebrations each year. Many of the students thought that the highlight of the event was when Mr. Jim Bell, Brentwood Park Primary School Principal, greeted everyone with ‘Happy New Year’ in Chinese. Back at Kambrya College on February 12th we celebrated Chinese New Year with spring rolls for all students. A Chinese dragon also paid a visit to give our school community its blessing and good wishes. We also had a lion dancing amongst the crowd helping to share of the spirit.

Young Leaders to ChinaCHINA. What can I say? I had the absolute time of my life. I was over there for six weeks, which was 43 days to be exact. And I loved every minute of it. From the food, the people, the culture and the experiences, it was everything I expected and everything I didn’t expect as well. Each day was a surprise and had me learning something new.

I left for China on November 5th and returned on December 17th a different person. Going on the trip made me step out of my comfort zone. I made lots of new friends, both Kambrya friends and Chinese friends. I’ve made some friends I hope I’ll have forever. My favourite times with the group were in Shanghai when we took a million selfies with a million Chinese people while on the streets. I’ve never laughed so much.

As a group, we laughed, we cried, we sang “I miss you” by Blink 182 over and over and over again. We made dumplings, we sang in Chinese, we played basketball and we even learnt to butter our bread with spoons. That’s a group joke. We helped each other, we taught each other to bargain at the markets and we were always there for each other and for 43 days, we were China family. We always will be.

When we first arrived in China, we spent a week in Shanghai. It was noisy, busy and full of bright lights. We went to Nanjing Road and were mobbed by the Chinese people for photos – we were like celebrities. We also visited People’s Square, the Science and Technology markets, the water town and the Pearl Tower.

In the second week, we caught a bullet train to Anzhou Middle School and commenced a week long home stay.

I stayed with a student named Yushi and went to school with her each day. At night, I got to meet up with the other Kambrya students. I was out riding mopeds at 11pm at night! The family were very welcoming to me and I enjoyed my time with them.

We then spent three weeks at Taizhou No 1 High School, which is a boarding school. It is a very different lifestyle! The group enjoyed doing morning exercise every day in our full white tracksuits – which is also their school uniform. We slept in dormitories with four beds and the ‘mattress’ was a piece of thin wood. I participated in aerobics, basketball, a talent show, tennis, singing and kung fu while I was there. The cafeteria was three levels high and the school had its own supermarket. We all had our own Chinese buddies and went to classes with them and also did our commencement work for school.

The last part of our trip was going to Beijing. We went to Tian’anmen Square, the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven. One of my highlights of the trip was climbing the Great Wall of China. There was snow all along the wall which made it harder to climb. It was huge – a lot bigger than I had expected. After catching a chairlift up, we were able to toboggan back down.

I am so glad I went on the China trip and I would do it again in a heartbeat. I highly recommend anyone thinking about it to apply to go. I am so thankful I was picked. Thank you so much to Kambrya, Ms Wastle, Ms Lazar and Mr Vancea for my trip of a lifetime.

Year 12 Camp 2016On the 10th of February for a period of three days, the year 12 cohort left for Lord Somers camp; the last camp and of our journey through high-school. 120 students, 7 teachers all in wooden cabins by the beach, was what we knew we were coming too. What we didn’t know, was the experiences and emotional bridges we were going to encounter within the next few days.

Upon our arrival, we were presented with our year 12 jackets, introduced to our friendly camp staff, who made it all the more enjoyable and the guidelines we were expected to follow. Further we were introduced to our guest speaker, Mark Dobson, known as ‘The Man behind the Talent’, who gave us the key to success and an important lesson of how to do our best, not anyone else’s best. We also discovered the difference between the elite student and the regular student. This was a great way to start off the camp, with motivation and humour.

The Year 12 camp of 2016 was one where students were able to engage in active conversation with one another and teachers with liberty and ease. We were here to discover ourselves and understand what was to come in the next year and how to embrace the challenges we’re expected to encounter. To give us an idea, we were about to discover that many of our teachers actually experienced life and VCE. Their stories were all both motivating and heartfelt and came with lessons to learn from. We learnt from Mr Hands ‘Why not

me?’, Mr Wallis, ‘Live to work’ or ‘work to live’ and Ms Day, ‘Care for one another and help each other out this year’; it will work in everyone’s favour.

We were involved in many activities including healthy mind and body (aka BOOT CAMP) with Ms Crago, The Amazing Race, of which we all got soaked in water fights, and beach activities.

Down time was prevalent and was a period for all to relax with many active conversations going on between teachers and students or students to students. This was a great way to reflect on the day and what we were going to implement into our life back home. Not only was it a relaxed environment but one where we were all treated as adults. This gave us a sense of responsibility and maturity that has put us in good stead for the hard year ahead!

We were very fortunate to have had two personal trainers come in to talk through the programs which have been specifically designed for our students to cover a number of fitness components.

Week 3 saw the squad introduced to Ryan Waight. Ryan has worked with many big named athletes including Adam Gilchrist, Steve Moneghetti, Leigh Colbert, Layne Beachley and David Parkin, as well as corporate businesses with presentations on the importance of leadership, goal setting and attitude. The big message the students took away from Ryan was K.I.N.D. Knowing Is Not Doing. Ryan allowed the squad to consider their own interpersonal and intrapersonal goals and what they could do in order to achieve those goals. Ryan will be back throughout the year to work with the students and ensure they are on task to achieve their goals they have set.

Our basketballers have been introduced to Trevor Burnette who came in to run a Wednesday morning training session. Trevor has experience as a USA College Basketball player and senior Coach, Vic Metro coach, Director of Coaching at a Representative level, and as an Individual Skills Trainer. He has trained numerous WNBL, NBL players, National Players of the Worlds Teams for Australia and training current state players. The ADP basketballers undertook a session which focused on the importance of good ball handling skills. They thoroughly enjoyed the session and will be working closely with Trevor throughout the year.

It has been an action packed start for our ADP students and we are very proud of the way each of them have approached the program. Every coach has made mention of their great attitudes and their commitment to want to improve. We look forward to a great year ahead.

Well what a start it has been for our ADP squad. We are really excited about the program we have put together at Kambrya College. We have developed a credible program that allows our students to have access to quality people that have been successful at the top level and people that are genuinely eager to see our squad improve. We were fortunate enough to meet with former Richmond coach and AFL umpiring director Jeff Gieschen in Week 2. Jeff was really engaging with the students and touched on topics which applied to our squad, including handling pressure at school, homework, friendships and sport. Jeff was touted as the best young football talent in the Gippsland area at the age of 13, so much so he had a sticker of himself being handed out at the local petrol stations to stick on the back of the family car. Jeff spoke about the challenges this brought him, as well as all the positives that came his way.

Students have also taken part in a Net Fit session run by former ANZ Championship Winning player Sarah Wall. The focus of the session was on fast feet and hands and maintaining consistency when fatigued. At the end of the session, Sarah shared her story about overcoming injuries and rejection and learning to never give up and always work hard to achieve your goals. Sarah returned the following week to work closely with our ADP netballers and some selected intermediate netballers. All the ADP students received high levels of praise from Sarah.

The students have also been working hard on their training programs which have been set up by JETTS Gym Berwick.
