Hello, my name is Wesley

Herren, I am 38 years old

and live in Richmond, TX,

with my husband James and

two Miniature Schnauzers. I

am working on achieving my

Bachelor’s Degree in Legal

Studies. I will be done with

that program on June 30, 2015 and plan to enroll in

the Master’s Degree program starting in July here at

Kaplan, after which I plan to attend law school at the

University of Houston. I took portfolio development

class EL203 and successfully petitioned out of seven

classes. Now my new graduation date is June 2015.

My last day at Kaplan will be sometime in October of

2016. Now I will be gearing up to take my LSAT in the

December, I think its December, and then apply to

law school. I have learned a great deal on my journey

here at Kaplan and will learn much more before I go.

Between school, work and being an officer for

the Kaplan chapter of the National Society of Colle-

giate Scholars (NSCS), I stay pretty busy. I am current-

ly in my second officer position, I started as the VP of

Social Media and am now the Executive VP/VP of

Events for our chapter. After the elections in Novem-

ber, I already knew what I wanted to do as a commu-

nity service project and for whom. The project is

called Concert For Courage, and it is to benefit the

Wounded Warrior Project. After going through the

channels and following protocol, I contacted the

WWP and starting setting everything up. Also, I regis-

tered the Kaplan NSCS chapter to be Student Ambas-

sadors for the Wounded Warrior Project. This is

something I wanted to make sure kept going after I

am gone. Then this was all made public and I never

expected to cause such a buzz over the event. I hap-

pen to know the right people, in the right places to

help get things rolling quickly.

As the brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and

friend of veterans and active military members and

their families, this project has special meaning to me,

coupled with my love of music and knowing the musi-

cians personally, it only seemed logical to organize a

concert. It has been a lot of work, but will be well

worth the effort. I may not like the reasons our men

and women are in these dangerous foreign lands in-

stead of home with their families, but I will support

them. They are soldiers, they are simply doing their

jobs. They protect us without question, without hesi-

tation, we do return the favor when they need the

help or protection. I come from a long line of veterans

dating back before the Civil War, so I have a healthy

respect and admiration for anyone who has to voraci-

ty to be a soldier. MY HERO’S WEAR DOG TAGS!! Plan

to hear that a lot if all goes as well as I hope.

For those who can make it to Cleveland, Texas

on Memorial Day Weekend, come on!! It’s Saturday,

May 23, 2015 from 1PM – 5PM. For those who can’t

make it, I promise there will be pictures. Did I miss

anything? Oh, watch the newsletter and blog for up-

dates…

With Doctor Appreciation Day being

March 30th let us discuss our appreci-

ation for our doctors. Doctors don’t

get nearly enough appreciation for all

that they do for us. Doctors save lives

daily. Doctors leave their families to

take care of ours. Doctors come to work even when

they are sick to take care of us. We tend to complain

about the wait times we have in doctor’s offices with-

out thinking about why we are having to wait. If we

didn’t have a long wait wouldn’t that mean that our

doctor isn’t taking the time to listen to his/her pa-

tients and explain the diagnoses? We should definite-

ly be more thankful for our doctors and the time that

they are away from their families to take care of us

and our families. Below are some featured Thank

You’s to some of our doctors around the world from

some of our scholars.

I would like to send a Thank You to Dr. Naef in

Jackson, Mississippi for all of his hard work and

time spent to make sure that my Britleigh was

perfectly healthy before being delivered in April

2011. I would also like to thank Dr. David Sim-

mons formoly of Grenada Children’s Clinic for all

of his hard work in diagnosing my son with his

CHD. He worked nonstop to find out what was

wrong with my son.~Stephanie Reeves~ STAR Sta-

The military community doctors vary until you

find one that you feel understands and addresses

all concerns with the utmost respect and care!

After 2 years at our current duty station and a

year left before we leave, I have met that doctor!

Thank you Dr. Saenz of BHC Sasebo, Japan for the

positive and reassuring care that you have provid-

ed for myself and my kids. I was at that moment

where losing faith in our healthcare due to so

much negative experiences that one positive visit

to you has changed that!! I can't forget those

corpsmans that have also helped change the neg-

atives to positives. ~RinaLou Coe, NSCS Member

Have you ever asked

yourself what you can

do to honor those who

have given so much for

our country? Then you might do like a lot of people

and get lost trying to figure it out because of so many

stigmas out there as well as the lack of available re-

sources to help them. Unless you know someone in

the military or are connected to one of the service

organizations it is very difficult to be able to help.

When I first retired from the military, almost two

years ago, there was no one jumping at my feet trying

to help me transition from military to civilian life.

And the organizations that were out there were not

well advertised. I went looking to see what was avail-

able and I was mildly surprised at what there was.

Since then I have gone to some of the events and

then turned around and started working with some

of the volunteer organizations. One particular organi-

zation that I have become heavily involved with is

Headwaters for Heroes based out of Harper, Texas

which provides services primarily to combat wound-

ed and combat veterans.

On December 26, 2014 I loaded up my hunting

gear, for the 2 ½ hour trip, and headed down to Har-

per, Texas to help

guide combat veter-

ans on a weekend

getaway for deer

hunting. The

weatherman called

for severe cold

weather the week-

end of the scheduled hunt. While many hunters that

were planning on hunting this weekend decided to

cancel, there was one group of dedicated hunters and

guides that were not going to let the weather deter

them. The determination to make the weekend

come to fruition was not just centered on the hunt.

The weekend was scheduled to allow three service

members/veterans to come together and enjoy a

weekend of camaraderie surrounded by people who

wanted to thank them for what they are doing or

have done for this great nation, and had invited them

there to do so.

The first night there they enjoyed welcome festivi-

ties and new friendships at the Headwaters Saloon in

Harper, Texas where the weekend’s event was held.

The hunting day was successful and the veterans had

a great time with the hospitality of the event and all

of the volunteers involved. I can speak from experi-

ence when I say that this simple weekend can mean a

world of difference to those veterans, not just for

those few days but in their daily lives also.

When you get a chance like this to help these he-

roes and connect with them in their lives, you will

feel and see a difference in your life as well as theirs

from the start of the weekend to the end. Service

members and veterans have their own world and it

can be difficult for them to let others in because of

past and current stigmas, but when you really get the

chance and learn about them and their lives it can

bring a huge change in yours. The joy you will feel

with helping and working with them cannot be ex-

plained, therefore I highly encourage everyone to

take the time to seek out this opportunity to honor

those who have given so much for our great nation.

If you are interested in feeling that joy and are not

sure where to start, you can contact me at:

It can be very stressful

to manage our lives

when we are students,

working, and have fami-

lies to take care of. Time

management is the key

to juggling school, work, and family. Let’s discuss 8

ways to successfully manage our time as told by (The

College Board, n.d.). Making daily to-do lists is one

way to go. I like to call mine daily outlines. You should

put the most important, or must-do items, at the top

and the least important at the bottom. Check items

off as you go and if you don’t finish your list for the

day at least you can still feel accomplished because

you did complete the most important tasks. Keeping

your “work” or a school notebook with you at all

times can help as well. If you have free time you can

take your notebook or “work” out and get some of it

done. Also, remember…you can say no! Don’t be

afraid to say no to something if you already have too

much on your plate. Nobody got ahead by having too

much on their plate and not saying no.

Do you know how children have a more pro-

ductive or hyper time of day? You do, too! Find that

time and use it to your advantage. Turn off your cell

and don’t surf Facebook or the web during that time.

Use it as a dedicated study and homework time.

You can also budget your time, so to speak. If

you know that it will take you a certain amount of

time for something, only allow that amount of time

to get that task completed. Do not allow yourself to

get side-tracked, follow through with the task at

hand. I know it is easier said than done but getting

side-tracked will only hurt you and mess up your

“time budget”.

The most important advice that I, myself, can

give you or that you can find in any research is to al-

ways get a good night’s sleep. Sleep is not only good

for the body but also the mind as well. Check out

Dear KUNSCS, I started at Kaplan University this fall, enrolling just out of high school. Lately all of my friends have been talking about the great experiences they are having at their schools which are campus-based. I am wor-ried that I may miss out on the whole college experience by attending a school that is online. What are some ways that I can make the most out of my time at Kaplan, not just academically, but socially as well?

-New Online Student

Dear New Online Student, Becoming involved socially can be an important part of the school experience. There are a variety of ways to get involved at Kaplan. You get out of it, what you put in to it! For starters check out the Student Life homepage found under the Community tab on the KU Campus portal. There you can find a listing of clubs and organizations that pertain to your field of study or service efforts you are interested in which you can join. Social media can be a valuable asset as well, fol-low both the Kaplan University and your specific school’s pages to find other students with similar in-terests to network with. After a while you will begin to notice familiar names in your classes and/or social me-dia and get to know one another just as if you were on campus.
