TON OF RUNNERS FOR 3-2 GAME--The final score of last night’s 12-inning win was not indicative of the opportunities the Royals had throughout the night, stranding 19 runners overall, tying for the third most in franchise history...it was the first 19-LOB game for KC since May 18, 1995, when the Royals were 3-2 winners at home over Seattle...oddly enough, in the five games in franchise history that the Royals have stranded at least 19 runners, the club has been on the winning end four times...Kansas City was just 2-for-14 with runners in scoring position last night. RED HOT, EVEN AS A RIGHT FIELDER--Kendrys Morales has been so hot at the plate, manager Ned Yost elected to place him in rightfield last night, his first outfield start since the 2008 season, and he responded with his fifth consecutive multi-hit game going 3-for-4...in this five-game stretch, he is 13-for-20 (.650) with five runs scored, two homers and five RBI...since going 1-for-15 in a four-game stop in Cleveland that ended on June 5 and lowered his season average to .191, Morales has batted .446 (29-for-65) in his last 18 games with 13 runs scored, four doubles, four homers and 15 RBI, slugging at a .692 clip while compiling a 1.192 OPS, raising his season mark to .255...he has reached safely in 14 consecutive starts...he has gone 9-for-12 in the first three games of this home & home vs. the Cardinals. TRIP STARTS WITH A “W”--The hope is that last night’s win will be the start of turning KC’s road program around, as it was just the second road trip-opening triumph of the year, the other on May 20 in Chicago, with KC ultimately going 4-2 on that journey...the Royals are 14-25 away from “The K”, the third worst mark in the Majors... conversely, KC has the best home winning pct. in the bigs at .711 for its 27-11 record...Kansas City is 14-4 in its last 17 home games and has a 17-5 mark over the last 22. This & ThatRoyals Notes - Kansas City Royals @ St. Louis Cardinals - Thursday, June 30, 2016

NICE ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION--Yesterday was the sixth anniversary of Whit Merrifield’s walk-off single that gave his alma mater South Carolina the College World Series championship in the final series played at Rosenblatt Stadium...fast forward six seasons and though Merrifield didn’t make the start last night he found himself in the middle of the heroics singling as a pinch hitter in the eighth and then doubling with one out in the 12th and scoring the eventual game winning run...among rookies with at least 150 at bats, Whit is second with a .314 average, while his 11 doubles are tied for fourth and 23 runs are 10th among all rookies...he had his streak of hitting safely in his first 18 career home games snapped on Tuesday, but finished with the third longest streak in the Majors since 1913...only Rocco Baldelli (20) and Albert Pujols (19) had longer hitting streaks at home to start their big league careers...Merrifield, who was summoned to the Majors on May 18, has recorded a hit in 31 of his first 36 big league games.

BONUS BASEBALL SUITS ROYALS--Last night’s 12-inning win ran Kansas City’s extra-inning record to 4-0 this year and it was the first extra-inning tilt on the road...KC has also posted 13-inning wins over the Braves and Tigers and a 10-inning triumph over the Twins, all at home...the Royals were 10-6 in bonus baseball last year during regular season and then a memorable 2-0 in the postseason, each coming against the Mets in the World Series.

ROYALS STILL AMONG ALL-STAR FAVORITES--With 2016 All-Star balloting ending at 10:59 (CDT) tonight, a pair of the defending World Champs remain in position to be in the starting lineup in San Diego on July 12, with manager Ned Yost at the helm...catcher Salvador Perez leads all A.L. players in votes with 3,754,594 in numbers released yesterday, while first baseman Eric Hosmer leads at his position with 2,638,022.

BUSY INTERLEAGUE WEEK--The Royals will leave here tonight and then continue Interleague play with a three-game visit to Philadelphia starting tomorrow...KC’s trip to Philadelphia will be just the third regular season stop in the City of Brotherly Love, while the Royals also visited there for the 1980 World Series...the Royals and Phils met at Citizen’s Bank Park in 2013, with KC taking two-of-three...Kansas City is 5-7 against the Senior Circuit this year, but dating back to the start of the 2014 season, the Royals have the best overall winning pct. in the Majors in Interleague play at .642, posting a 34-19, with the 34 wins tied with Toronto (34-21) in that span...those totals do not include the Royals going 7-5 in the last two Fall Classics.

PEN STILL THE BEST--Despite a pair of blown saves taking place last night, the Royals continued to maintain the top relief ERA in the Majors with a 2.74 mark...the nearest competitor are the Dodgers at 3.10, while Baltimore is the closest A.L. club at 3.15...the KC pen has the third most innings in the American League this year with 266.0.

NEXT STOP PHILLY--The Royals won’t return home until July 7 when Seattle visits for a four-game series that leads to the All-Star break...Kansas City will head to Philadelphia for three starting tomorrow and then the trip will conclude with a three-game stop in Toronto, as the Royals will celebrate America’s Independence in Canada for the second time in five years...the series with the Jays will be the first meeting between the two clubs that slugged it out last October for the right to represent the American League in the World Series.

LONG MONTH FOR THE LONG BALL--Kansas City came within an inning of snapping the opponents home run streak, but the longest active streak in the Majors continued when Steven Piscotty took Joakim Soria deep to open the 10th, the 17th straight game the opposition has homered (28 home runs total)...tonight is the June finale, with KC already setting a record for this specific month with 49 allowed in 26 games, six more than the 43 allowed in 26 games in June of 2001...the club record for homers allowed in a month is 51 surrendered in May of 2006...on the year, KC has been taken deep 101 times.

JUNE ROLLERCOASTER RIDE COMING TO AN END--KC is 12-14 in June with one to play, thus icing the first losing record in the month of June since going 9-18 in 2011...after an eight-game losing streak at the beginning of June, the Royals had finally gotten their record back to .500 with a 6-1 homestand, however, a four-game slide and 3-3 mark since dropped KC back below break-even for the month...to say the club has looked like two different teams during the current month would be an understatement as the team has hit .321 and slugged .470, while averaging 5.8 runs in their 12 wins...in its 14 losses, KC is batting just .256 and scored 2.4 runs per game...the pitching staff has also been one extreme or the other, posting a 2.03 ERA in its 12 wins, while holding the opposition to a collective .201 batting average, while posting a 7.25 ERA and .293 average in its 14 defeats.

SECOND ONE TO GET AWAY--It’s been feast or famine for closer Wade Davis when it comes to save situations, with last night his first opportunity since June 13 and the Cardinals plated a run for his second blown save of the year, now 18 of 20...in a two-week span from May 18-June 1, Davis went 8-for-8 in save situations, but then had to work twice in non-save situations on a 10-game road trip due to the eight-game losing streak...he also had only one save opportunity from April 23-May 14 after opening the year with eight saves and a win through the first three weeks of the campaign...Davis has still made good on nine of his last 10 and 26 in his last 28 tries dating back to last year...his current 26 of 28 stretch does not include going 4-for-4 in his chances during the 2015 postseason.

NED CLIMBING WIN CHART--The winningest skipper in franchise history, Ned Yost is now 509-505 after last night’s win...he was named to the role on May 13, 2010 and has surpassed Whitey Herzog’s previous team mark of 410 wins (1975-79)...Yost’s postseason managerial mark of 22-9 is good for a .710 winning pct., which ranks eighth all-time and is atop the list of managers with at least 20 postseason tilts under their belt...Yost is the 16th full-time manager in franchise history and is sixth among active managers is games (1,972) and sixth in wins (966)...his 1,972 games rank him 60th all-time...this is Ned’s second stint as a big league manager after nearly six full campaigns at the helm for the Milwaukee Brewers (2003-2008)...he compiled a 457-502 record with the Brew Crew including a 166-146 mark in his last two seasons...Yost, a catcher during his playing days, began his coaching career in the Atlanta organization, including 12 straight seasons on Bobby Cox’s big league staff (1991-2002).

THE DEFENDING CHAMPS--Kansas City opened 2016 as the two-time defending American League Champions, a franchise first, defeating the Mets to win the World Series crown last year after going to a Game #7 in the 2014 Fall Classic before succumbing to the San Francisco Giants...Kansas City’s A.L. title in 2015 was the fourth in franchise history, joining the 1980, ‘85 and 2014...the Royals are coming off a 95-67 regular season and their first American League Central championship, winning the division by 12 games...the last division title won by Kansas City was the 1985 A.L. West, when the club parlayed that triumph into its first World Series title...the 95 wins last year were the most by a KC squad since the 1980 Royals went 97-65...dating back to the start of the 2013 season, Kansas City has a 311-252 record for a .552 winning pct., the best mark in the American League, and fifth most victories in the Majors (behind St. Louis, Pittsburgh, the Dodgers and Washington)...KC has two more wins in that span than the second best A.L. club Baltimore (309).
