THE 2014 KANSAS CITY ROYALS POST-SEASON GUIDE IS AVAILABLE ON-LINE AT MLBPRESSBOX.COM IN THE BIG INNING--The Royals evened the 2014 World Series at a win apiece on Wednesday night, plating five sixth inning runs to cruise to a 7-2 win in game #2 of the Fall Classic...tied a 2-2 entering the home half of the sixth, Lorenzo Cain and Eric Hosmer reached via a single and walk, respectively, which set off a chain reaction of pitching changes, as the Giants used five different hurlers in the frame that featured a run scoring single by Billy Butler, 2-run double from Salvador Perez and then a 2-run homer by Omar Infante...if time of possession were a baseball statistic, the Royals would’ve crushed it on Wednesday as the home half of the sixth took just over 32 minutes to complete...the 5-run inning marked the second highest scoring inning in World Series play for the Royals, a run shy of the 6-run fifth in Game #7 of the 1985 series...Kansas City bullpen tookover for the final 3.2 innings, with the red hot trifecta of Kelvin Herrera, Wade Davis and Greg Holland blanking the Giants the rest of the way to give the win to Herrera, his first career postseason victory...Alcides Escobar joined Cain, Butler and Infante with two hits apiece to lead the 10-hit attack... the win was KC’s ninth in 10 games during this postseason. HAPPY BIRTHDAY HOZ--Kansas City first baseman Eric Hosmer turned 25 years old today...the defending Rawlings Gold Glove winner at first base, shares his birthday with fellow baseball player Rafael Furcal (37), NASCAR driver Brian Vickers (32), actor Kevin Kline (67) and former New York Giants quarterback Y.A. Tittle (88). ROAD WARRIORS--The Royals are 4-0 on the road this postseason, posting 2-0 marks in Anaheim in the ALDS and Baltimore in the ALCS...those figures are even better than KC’s solid regular season work, posting a 47-34 ledger away from ‘The K’, five wins better the home ledger during the season (42-39)...the road year turned around in Chicago, as KC entered play on July 22 in Chicago with a 26-25 road mark, but then reeled off a 21-9 record in road tilts, matching the Angels for the most road wins in that span...counting the postseason, KC is now 10-1-1 in its last 12 road series played. A DIFFERENT LOOK--No matter how hard he tries, manager Ned Yost cannot replicate the lineup he’s used the last 18 games that has witnessed an overall 15-3 record...since September 21 in a series finale against the Detroit Tigers, the ninesome of (in order) Alcides Escobar, Nori Aoki, Lorenzo Cain, Eric Hosmer, Billy Butler, Alex Gordon, Salvador Perez, Omar Infante and Mike Moustakas has been the everyday lineup, but tonight the rules change for the next three games as the series shifts to a National League park...tonight’s starting pitcher, Jeremy Guthrie, was 0-for-5 with a sac bunt this year and 5-for-56 (.089) lifetime with five sacrifices...tomorrow’s starter, Jason Vargas, did not bat this year, but was 2-for-5 last season and is an impressive .262 hitter lifetime (16-for-61) with three doubles and four RBI. SOLID VS. SENIOR CIRCUIT--Though the stakes are much higher this week, playing against the National League in 2014 was not an issue for the Royals, especially on the road...Kansas City posted a big league best 15-5 mark against the Senior Circuit, with all but four of those games occurring against the National League West...KC also went 8-2 on the road vs. the N.L., losing their first meeting in San Diego before winning eight in a row and then losing the N.L. road finale in Denver. BEST TRIO EVER???--The Royals are showing the nation what Kansas Citians came to appreciate this summer with one of the top bullpens in the game...the trifecta of Kelvin Herrera, Wade Davis and Greg Holland were the first trio in history to make at least 60 appearances each and record individual ERA’s of under 1.50...in this postseason the trio has combined to work 29.0 innings, allowing three earned runs for a 0.93 ERA while fanning 36. POSTSEASON RECAP--Kansas City’s win on Wednesday evened this series with the Giants, as the postseason has come full circle with the bay area for the Royals...the run to the World Series began with KC coming back from a 7-3 deficit in the eighth inning of the Wild Card Game against Oakland’s Jon Lester to eventually post a 9-8 victory over the A’s in 12 innings...from there, the Royals swept three from the Angels, highlighted by back-to-back 11-inning wins in Anaheim and then kept the dream alive with a 4-game sweeping of Baltimore, taking the first two in Camden Yards and then finishing things off at home with consecutive 2-1 wins. TONIGHT’S STARTING PITCHERS (Postseason stats): RHP Jeremy Guthrie (0-0, 1.80) vs. RHP Tim Hudson (0-0, 3.29) Regular Season 2014 2013 Career 2014 2013 Career Jeremy Guthrie vs. Giants - - 0-1 Major League Record 13-11 (4.13 ERA) 15-12 83-100 Tim Hudson vs. Royals 0-1 - 3-4 Major League Record 9-13 (3.57 ERA) 8-7 214-124 JEREMY GUTHRIE is making his first career World Series appearance and second overall postseason start...he’s faced the Giants three times in his career, including twice in 2012 as a member of the Rockies...he’s in the second year of a 3-year deal after being acquired from Colorado for Jonathan Sanchez on July 20, 2012. SOLID VS. O’S--Jeremy last worked nine days ago, in Game #3 of the ALCS, pitching the first 5.0 innings of KC’s 2-1 win over his former team from Baltimore...the veteran righty allowed a run on 3 hits with 2 walks and 2 K’s...Guthrie’s only hiccup came in the top of the second, when he allowed consecutive one-out doubles to Steve Pearce and J.J. Hardy, staking the O’s to a short-lived 1-0 lead...after a walk to Ryan Flaherty, Jeremy retired 11 of the final 13 hitters he faced...Kansas City tied the score in the fourth inning and plated the winning run with Billy Butler’s sacrifice fly in the seventh, after Guthrie had departed...the start was Jeremy’s first in postseason play, after 275 career regular season appearances (248 starts). DEALING DOWN THE STRETCH--Guthrie was 8-2 over his final 12 regular season starts, with the win total tying him for second in the A.L. from July 26 on, trailing only L.A.’s Matt Shoemaker (9)...he was named the Royals Pitcher of the Month in September, going 3-1 with a 2.40 ERA over 5 outings. LOCAL CONNECTION--Jeremy attended nearby Stanford University, pitching for the Cardinal from 2001-02, helping them reach the College World Series both years...during his junior season, Guthrie went 13-2 with a 2.51 ERA and was named the Pac-10 Pitcher of the Year...he will become the 11th Stanford product to appear in the World Series and the first to start a World Series game since Mike Mussina started Game #3 of the 2003 World Series against the Marlins. ON THE OREGON TRAIL--A native of Ashland, Oregon, Jeremy became the seventh pitcher from ‘The Beaver State’ to start a postseason game in his last outing and the first since Jim Rooker, who started for Pittsburgh in Game #5 of the 1979 World Series...Guthrie looks to become the first Oregonian to start and win a postseason game since Mickey Lolich earned victories in Games 2, 5 and 7 of the 1968 World Series for Detroit. VS. THE GIANTS--@TheRealJGuts (Twitter handle) has faced the Giants three times during the regular season, going 0-1 with a 6.14 ERA (10 ER in 14.2 IP)...he most recently pitched against San Francisco on May 15, 2012, when he took a no-decision here, allowing one unearned run on four hits over 5.1 innings in a 5-4 Rockies victory...he also suffered a 6-3 loss here on June 16, 2010 as a member of the O’s...over the past two seasons, he’s made five starts against National League clubs, going 2-0 with a 2.15 ERA (9 ER in 37.2 IP), claiming wins over the Dodgers (5-3) on June 23 and at Arizona (6-2) on August 7 this season. ON THE ROAD--Jeremy went 7-5 with a 4.01 ERA (45 ER in 101.0 IP) in his 16 road starts this season, which included victories in five of his last six outings away from home...opponents hit .260 against him in their home parks (102-for-393), however they hit just .228 against him from August 1 on...Guthrie is 41-48 with a 3.97 ERA in 121 career road starts (134 total appearances), while he’s 6-6 with a 3.12 ERA and 13 quality starts in 20 outings in National League parks. Royals Notes - Kansas City Royals @ San Franisco Giants - Friday, October 24, 2014

This & ThatGOLD GLOVE FINALISTS--The finalists for 2014 Rawlings Gold Gloves were announced on Thursday and the Royals had some familiar names listed, joining the Los Angeles Dodgers as the only teams with four nominees...the finalists included three-time winner Alex Gordon for leftfield and last year’s winners at first base, Eric Hosmer, and behind the plate, Salvador Perez...shortstop Alcides Escobar is also a finalist this year...the Gold Gloves will be announced on Tuesday, November 4 on ESPN 2 and then handed out on Friday, November 7 at The Plaza hotel in New York City.

WILD CARD SERIES--This 2014 World Series marks the second time that a pair of Wild Card qualifiers are squaring off for the World Championship, the other occurring in 2002 when these San Francisco Giants battled the Angels, losing the series in seven games to the Halos...the Royals rolled through Oakland (Wild Card Game), the Los Angeles Angels (3-0 in ALDS) and Baltimore (4-0 in ALCS) to get to this final stop of 2014.

ROYAL RELIEF--The Royals bullpen has combined to go a perfect 7-0 this postseason while compiling an ERA of 1.81 (9 earned runs in 44.2 innings pitched)...the seven relief victories ties the record for a single postseason, matching the 2003 Marlins (Braden Looper 2, Carl Pavano 2, Chad Fox, Brad Penny, Ugueth Urbina).

OMAR SNAPS DINGER DROUGHT--The icing on the cake Wednesday night was Omar Infante’s 2-run homer to cap the 5-run sixth inning that led to KC’s tying this World Series at a win apiece...for Infante, it was his first career postseason home run in 145 at bats, which was the second longest dinger drought by an active player...the longest dry spell belongs to the Cardinals’ Jon Jay at 189 fall ball AB’s without a homer.

FOUR IS GENERALLY A GOOD THING--Kansas City’s 7-2 win on Wednesday ran the club mark to 6-0 this postseason when plating at least four runs...the Royals have put up some phenomenal numbers when the offense has been able to get at least four runs across the plate in a game over the last two seasons...during the regular season, KC was 69-14 when scoring at least four runs and combined with last year (64-14), the Royals are 105 games over .500 during the regular season when scoring at least four runs (133-28).

HOLLY ROLLS ON--Greg Holland finished the regular season with 46 saves and has gone 6-for-6 in this postseason, including a big league record tying 4-for-4 in the ALCS, joining Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley as the only pitchers to accomplish that feat since the ALCS went to a best-of-seven format...while postseason stats are not included in the regular season total, with six saves to this point Holly has now made good on 52 of his 54 save tries this year, including 45 of the last 46 and 26 in a row after last night’s rescue...over a longer haul in regular season play, Holland has converted 86 of his last 89 attempts (96.6%) since May 30 of last season, the highest percentage among closers with at least 40 opportunities in that span...since that date, Greg has five more saves than any other pitcher in baseball (Craig Kimbrel - 81) and Holland allowed just 14 earned runs in 113.1 innings for a 1.11 ERA...he recorded his 100th career save on August 8 and since posting his first career save on August 3, 2011 vs. Baltimore, Holland has gone 113-for-123, the best save pct. at 91.9 among closers with at least 100 save opportunities.

SHARPENING THE SHORT GAME--The Royals, who finished the year second in the American League in infield hits with 158, have already accumulated 16 infield knocks in this postseason, easily the most of any of the playoff participants this October...the closest competition in infield hits this October are the Giants with four...Kansas City featured four in the Top 14 individually in infield knocks with Lorenzo Cain tied for third (28), Nori Aoki tied for sixth (27), Alcides Escobar tied for 12th (24) and Jarrod Dyson tied for 14th (22).

BOMBS AWAY--Kansas City clubbed its 10th home run of this postseason with Wednesday’s blast by Omar Infante...it was the 12th World Series homer in franchise history, joining the likes of Willie Aikens (4), Amos Otis (3), Salvador Perez George Brett, Frank White and Darryl Motley...Mike Moustakas has homered four times in this postseason to tie the franchise record for most home runs in a single postseason, a mark that was set by Aikens in 1980...in franchise history, only George Brett clubbed most postseason home runs in his career with 10...Moose is also just the second ninth-place hitter since 1903 to hammer four home runs in a postseason, tying Adam Kennedy from the 2002 Angels...Jason Varitek has four in his postseason career from the nine-hole.

THE WEEK THAT WAS IN AUGUST--KC’s run to the postseason wouldn’t have been possible if not for an August week of games against the two bay area entries in Major League Baseball...over a 7-day stretch, the Royals hosted these Giants followed by a 4-game visit from the Oakland A’s, featuring an opposing hurler who had “All-Star pitcher” on his resume...Kansas City won six of those games against the likes of Madison Bumgarner, Tim Hudson, Tim Lincecum, Sonny Gray, Scott Kazmir and Jeff Samardzija, while the lone loss was to Jon Lester.

HOME GROWN ROYALS--It was never a secret that for the Royals to contend, they’d have to do it with the combination of home grown talent and then enhance the roster via the trade and free agent route...of the 25 players on the World Series active roster, 12 were drafted or signed originally by the Royals...the group includes (draft round-year): Terrance Gore (20th-2011), Jarrod Dyson (50th-2006), Alex Gordon (1st-2005), Mike Moustakas (1st-2007), Salvador Perez (non-drafted free agent-2006), Billy Butler (1st-2004), Brandon Finnegan (1st-2014), Yordano Ventura (non-drafted free agent-2008), Eric Hosmer (1st-2008), Kelvin Herrera (non-drafted free agent-2006), Danny Duffy (3rd-2007) and Greg Holland (10th-2007).

AND THE REST OF THE SQUAD--The remaining dozen of the 2014 squad arrived via trades and free agency...that group includes (how acquired): Alcides Escobar and Lorenzo Cain (trade with Milwaukee-Dec., 2010), Josh Willingham (trade with Minnesota-2014), Jeremy Guthrie (trade with Colorado-July, 2012), Omar Infante (free agent-Dec., 2013), Wade Davis and James Shields (trade with Tampa Bay-Dec., 2012), Erik Kratz (trade with Toronto-July, 2014), Nori Aoki (trade with Milwaukee-Dec., 2013), Jason Vargas (free agent-Nov., 2013), Jason Frasor (trade with Texas-July, 2014), Jayson Nix (Waivers from Pittsburgh-2014) and Tim Collins (trade with Atlanta-July, 2010).

RUNNIN’ ROYALS--The Royals have swiped 13 bases in this postseason, using eight different thieves to accomplish the total...KC opened the playoffs by tying an MLB postseason record with seven thefts in the win over Oakland, with seven different Royals recording steals...for the second straight year, the Royals led the Majors in stolen bases with 153 both this year and last season...Jarrod Dyson, despite being a part-time player, has swiped 30, 34 and now 36 in his last three seasons, totaling 100 bags in that span which was seventh among all big league thieves, most of whom play every day...KC was the only big league club with three players with at least 25 thefts, as Dyson is joined by Alcides Escobar (31) and Cain (28), marking the first time for the franchise since U.L. Washington, Willie Wilson and John Wathan each swiped at least 25 bags in 1983.

ON-THE-JOB TRAINING--This 2014 version of the Kansas City Royals entered the September 30 Wild Card Game with only five players who had previous postseason experience with Wade Davis, Omar Infante, Jayson Nix, James Shields and Raul Ibanez...with Ibanez inactive for the World Series, KC is down to four who have previous experience in October baseball.

A LOOK BACK AT ‘14--Kansas City snapped its postseason dry spell with an 89-73 season, capped a week ago today with a 6-4 win over the White Sox in Chicago to finish one game behind the Detroit Tigers in the American League Central...the rollercoaster ride that was the 2014 season saw the Royals trail by as many as 6 1/2 games after play on June 1, only to reel off a 13-2 stretch to take a 1 1/2-game advantage in the Central on June 18...KC then fell into a 9-18 skid from June 19-July 21 to fall to eight games behind the Tigers, but a win in Chicago on July 22 jumpstarted a season-ending stretch in which the Royals were 41-23 and popped champagne corks for the first time in 29 years on September 26 with a win over the White Sox in U.S. Cellular Field...the two combatants in the ALCS were the two winningest teams in the American League from July 22 on, with the Royals posting 41 victories and the Orioles 42...the 89-victory season marked the most by the Kansas City franchise since winning 92 games in 1989...KC has coupled its last two seasons for a 175-149 mark for a .540 winning pct.

KEEPING IT IN THE YARD--The bullpen duo of Wade Davis and Kelvin Herrera combined for 140.0 homerless innings during the 2014 regular season...Davis tossed 72.0 frames and allowed only five extra-base hits (four doubles and a triple), while Herrera fired 68.0 innings and gave up 12 extra-base knocks (all doubles)...Davis, Herrera and the Dodgers’ Brandon League were the only three pitchers in the Majors who have worked at least 60.0 innings with no home runs surrendered.

DAVIS SETS RELIEF STRIKEOUT MARK--The breakout bullpen year of Wade Davis ended with 109 strikeouts, breaking the team record for a reliever held by fellow bullpen-mate Greg Holland, set last year, and Jim York, a reliever for KC in 1971 (103)...Davis attained his 109 K’s in 72.0 innings for a 13.6 strikeout to 9-inning ratio, the third best mark in the A.L. (minimum 60.0 innings).
