Old Kuching Smart Heritage (OKSHe)

The Old Kuching Smart Heritage is a visionary project by

the Sarawak Government to transforming Old Kuching into

a World Tourism Heritage Site. It is a collaborative effort

between local authorities, private sectors and business

industries, State agencies, institutions of higher learning,

training centres, non-Governmental organisations, media

fraternities and local communities, targeted towards

heritage preservation and conservation, establishment

of smart infrastructure through the use of IT and cut-

ting-edge technology, as well as the promotion of local

culture, art and sport, ultimately helping to boost the local

socio economy.

The OKSH initiative encompasses Historical Monuments

Heritage, Kampung Heritage, Business Heritage and Riv-

erfront Heritage, covering large areas of the city from old

Padungan to Kubah Ria. Explore these trails to uncover a

wealth of heritage offerings.

OKSHe TRAILS

Historical Monuments Heritage Trail: The Historical Mon-

uments Heritage Trail features 25 stops and is perfect for

history buffs wishing to learn more about the city’s early

days and the legacy of the White Rajah. Attractions in-

clude British Colonial buildings, forts, museums, memorials

and places of worship among others.

Kampung Heritage Trail: This trail focuses on traditional struc-

tures and premises in Kampung Petingan, Kampung Sungai

Lajim, Kampung Muhibbah, Kampung Bandarshah, Kampung

Segolong and Kampung Munggu Kubur, and offers a look at

local art, culture and lifestyle in these villages.

Business Heritage Trail: The Business Heritage Trail lets

you discover businesses that have thrived over the

decades, even centuries in Kuching’s earliest trading

districts along the Kuching Waterfront, Courthouse Road,

Carpenter Street, India Street and Gambier Street. Some

of the shops here, which were established as early as the

1800s, are still occupied by the carpenters, blacksmiths,

fabric traders and coffee shop owners whose products

and services remain relevant today.

Riverfront Heritage Trail: The Riverfront Heritage Trail covers

areas along the Kuching Waterfront, allowing you to admire

architectural icons like the Astana, Fort Margherita, Square

Tower, Old State Mosque and the Malay villages along the

Sarawak River. Enjoy the scenery from the river via Kuching’s

iconic passenger boat known as Penambang or get a good

view from above on the beautiful Darul Hana Bridge.

Kampung Heritage

1 Masjid Besar KuchingFirst established before the arrival of James Brooke in Kuching, this mosque’s earliest incarnation was constructed on the banks of the river at the foothills, and made entirely of wood, with the characteristics of traditional Malay house construction of that time. Its current beautiful Mughal-inspired structure with Malay influences was commissioned in 1967 following a visit by Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj. As of now Masjid Besar Kuching remains as one of the most iconic buildings in the heart of Kuching City.

2 Rumah Warisan Haji Taha / Darul KurniaDarul Kurnia is a colonial style mansion built in the 1930s by Datu Patinggi Abang Haji Abdillah. A Sarawakian independence patriot, Datu Patinggi Hj Abdillah was a highly influential leader of his time, most known for spearheading the anti-cession movement. The anti-cession movement is a fight against British Empire’s attempt to govern Sarawak as a crown colony

without sufficient consultation with native residents. This house is historically significant as witness to the ‘338 Event’ - a protest by hundreds of civil servants, at the risk of losing their job, to demonstrate their unwillingness to be colonised.

3 Tapak Persaudaraan Masjid Bintangor Haji TahaMasjid Bintangor Haji Taha (MBHT), founded by Datok Haji Abang Safuani Bin Abang Juini is a social organisation in Kuching with aims to empower the Malay community following the cessation of Sarawak to British Empire. In order to unite the communities, MBHT began organising a series of live performance shows known as ‘Bangsawan Kampung’ throughout different villages. The shows comprising amateur theatres, live band and song performances were often performed voluntarily by singers in a generous spirit of goodwill that was unprecedented. Proceeds from these shows were donated to the education development project in Sarawak, making it possible to build Sekolah Rakyat in hopes of providing education to the younger generation.

4 Rumah Warisan Datu Bandar Abang Haji KassimBuilt in 1863 by Kuching mayor Datu Bandar Abang Haji Kassim, this building was the biggest palatial size Malay house in Kuching at the time. Known to the locals as ‘Rumah Batu’ (The Stone House), it was the first Malay house built using stones and concrete, the first of its kind in a time where houses were primarily built using wood. Having survived a sacking by the

Japanese army during the Japanese Occupation in Sarawak, this building remains standing as an indomitable part of Sarawakian history.

5 Rumah Warisan Jalan MasjidThis heritage house on Jalan Masjid still retains most of its traditional features, as seen from the wooden window shutters typical in houses of old.

6 Madrasah Orang Melayu IslamThis humble heritage house was once used as a learning institution for the Muslim Malay village kids within the Jalan Ajibah Abol area. The house later became a public school, which served as a preliminary education centre for aspiring Malay leaders of that era. Among the people who have taught at the school are current Head of State, Tun Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib

Mahmud, Cikgu Midai Zakaria, Cikgu Annuar Abdul Razak and Cikgu Fatimah Dahari.

7 Producer Of Air Periuk Post Partum Herbal Therapy SetSpices and herbs are synonymous with traditional Malay remedies - used in tandem with one another to relieve common symptoms and diseases. The owner of this house was among the first to make a full traditional post partum herbal therapy set, which is a concoction of many different types of herbs. This concoction is traditionally taken by new mothers during their confinement period as it is believed to have many health properties.

8 Rumah Kediaman Tan Sri Abang Mat UraiThis stunning heritage house was build by Tan Sri Abang Ahmad Urai, a veteran Statesman who once served as the Senate President in the Parliament. Some of the distinctive features of the grand abode include Minangkabau-style roofs, ornate carvings inspired by nature, a courtyard and a large common hall where the public would come together to partake in religious studies and festivities.

9 Rumah Warisan Bentara Darul MaziahDarul Maziah as this heritage house is known, was built in the late 1880s by the Third White Rajah’s Herald, Haji Hassim Arif. This monument of more than 130 years old is a stunning example of Malay architecture and is beautifully preserved to this day. The house is made from hardwood (Belian) and features ornate carvings on the awning and verandah, high windows and ‘Tunjuk Langit’ on the roof signifying the oneness of God.

10 Keringkam EmbroideryCome witness first-hand how the traditional Keringkam is made. This luxurious fashion piece once afforded only by the Malay nobles of Kuching is meticulously embroidered using gold thread and a special needle. Priced according to either thread count or overall workmanship, it is worn on weddings or special occasions and usually paired with equally luxurious Sarawak Songket.

Historical monuments Heritage

11 Square TowerOne of the most photographed monuments in Kuching for its elegant Colonial style architecture typical of the Brooke era, it was built in 1879. Today, this iconic white tower houses an award-winning fine-dining restaurant, although in the past it was also used as a jailhouse, an administrative office and a dance hall.

12 The AstanaBuilt in 1870 by Rajah Charles Brooke in the style of an English manor as a gift to his beloved wife Margaret, the Ranee of Sarawak. It serves today as the official residence of the Sarawak Governor.

13 Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Building

The new Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) building stands proud on the north bank of the Sarawak River, as an icon of modern-day Sarawak. The 9-storey building was declared open by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin on July 27, 2009.

14 Masjid Bandar KuchingCommonly known as Masjid India, it was built in 1876 to replace a wooden surau before it. Inside, the mosque boasts a large bedok, a traditional drum used to announce the call to prayer.

15 Old Fire StationIt began operating after receiving the first coal-powered fire engine from the UK in 1917. The station itself was demolished, leaving only its lookout tower that is now part of the ‘open-air food court’. (Daily Opening Hours: 7am-10.30pm)

16 Kuching Divisional MosqueLocated on a hilltop at Jalan Masjid, it was built in 1968 to replace a wooden mosque built there in 1847 by Datuk Patinggi Ali. It stands today as one of the city’s most striking historical landmarks.

17 Islamic Heritage MuseumIt was built by the Brooke administration as the James Brooke Malay College. It became the Madrasah Melayu Sarawak in 1930 and was opened to public as the Islamic Heritage Museum in 1992 following extensive renovation works. (Opening Hours: Mon - Fri from 9am - 4.45pm • Sat, Sun & Public Holidays: 10am - 4pm)

18 Gurdwara Sahib KuchingThis beautiful temple was built in 1912 to cater to the Sikh families in Kuching. It was opened in 1982 and became a prominent landmark and monument for the Sikh community in Kuching. (Opening Hours of the Sikh Gallery: Daily 7am - 8pm except Sunday)

19 Old Government Printing OfficeThis historic building was built in 1908 on the former site of the first Ladies’ Club and served as a printing office for the Government until 1951. It currently houses the office of the Sarawak Museum Department.

20 Central Police StationOverlooking Padang Merdeka, the old police station is hard to miss with its white and blue colour scheme. Since it opened in 1931, the Central Police Station has retained its original design to this day.

21 General Post OfficeThis magnificent structure built in 1931 under Rajah Charles Vyner Brooke has served as the General Post Office since its completion in 1932, right up to this day.

22 Textile MuseumThe Pavilion building was constructed in 1907 and completed in 1909, it originally served as a medical headquarters and hospital until the mid-1920s. Now it

houses the Textile Museum. (Opening Hours: Mon - Fri from 9am - 4.45pm • Sat, Sun & Public Holidays: 10am - 4pm)

23 Round TowerBuilt after the great fire of Jan 20, 1884, the tower opened in 1886 and served as a dispensary, Labour Department office and Subordinate Courts Registry. The Round Tower is just as beautiful today against its modern backdrop as it was centuries before.

24 Japanese BuildingThis is the only administrative building constructed by the Japanese Occupational Force during World War II, using labourers from Sarawak and Sabah. They were forced to march from Batu Lintang Camp where they were held.

25 Old CourthouseIt was built in 1868 and completed in 1874. Since then, it was used as the Government of Sarawak’s administrative centre until 1973. Today, it houses the Ranee Museum, restaurants and cafés. (Tour in large groups require a simple letter to inform the management.)

26 Brooke MemorialThe memorial was erected in 1924 in memory of Sir Charles Brooke for his services and dedication to Sarawak. It is made of granite and features an image of Sir Charles Brooke carved out of a white marble slab.

27 Fort MargheritaBuilt in 1879 by Sir Charles Brooke to protect Kuching from pirate attacks, it was repurposed in 1971 as a police museum before handed over to the Sarawak Government. Today, it houses the Brooke Gallery. (Daily opening Hours: 9am - 4.45pm • Prior arrangements with tour guide is necessary for large tour groups.)

28 Chinese History MuseumA charming pink coloured building originally serving as the Chinese Courthouse from 1912 until 1921. It was opened as the Chinese History Museum in 1993. (Opening Hours: Mon - Fri from 9am - 4.30pm • Sat from 10am - 3.30pm • Please take note that photography is not allowed in the museum unless

with written consent from the management.)

29 Tua Pek Kong TempleAlso known as Siew San Temple, it has been in existence since 1770 and underwent extensive reconstructions works in 1856, 1965 and 2002.

30 Sarawak Steamship BuildingBuilt in 1930 as the office and warehouse of the Sarawak Steamship Company, the building today houses a restaurant and display spaces, among other things.

31 Hiang Tiang Siang Ti TempleThis temple built more than 1½ centuries ago by Teochew immigrants from China at Carpenter Street is known for the intricate figurines on the roof and statues of deities covered in gold. (Opening Hours: Daily from 6.30am - 6pm)

32 Taoist Hong San Si TempleThe temple features an ornate rooftop embellished with ceramic artworks of fish and other animals. The temple is said to have existed since 1848 and is dedicated to the Hokkien child deity Kong Teck Choon Ong.

33 St. Thomas’ CathedralAn Anglican cathedral completed in 1953, the church building that we see today was built to replace the wooden one constructed by McDougall in 1857. It features a mid 20th Century British architectural style and a red barrel vaulted ceiling. (Opening Hours: Mon - Fri from 8.30am - 4.30pm • Sat from 8.30am - 12.30pm)

34 Sarawak Museum Old BuildingRajah Charles Brooke built the museum in 1891 to showcase precious historical artefacts and a large collection of local wildlife documented by famous naturalist Alfred Wallace.

35 Reservoir ParkAn attraction for Kuchingites to spend their time with friends and family for recreational activities since the 1970s. The park is built around two man-made lakes dug in 1895 as reservoirs to supply piped water all over Kuching.

Business Heritage

36 India StreetThis historic street, a popular tourist destination in Kuching, was formerly known as Kling Street in the 1850s. It was renamed as India Street in 1928 by Sir Charles Vyner Brooke, the Third White Rajah of Sarawak and was converted into a pedestrian mall in 1992..

37 Carpenter StreetLocated behind the Main Bazaar, Carpenter Street is one of the oldest streets in Kuching. Existing for more than 200 years, the street has a rich history and is today lined with old shophouses, many of them still housing decades-old heritage businesses.

38 China StreetChina Street is located at an intersection in the middle of Carpenter Street, connecting Jalan Wawasan on one end, cutting through Carpenter Street and out to Jalan Main Bazaar on the other end.

39 Bishopgate StreetThis stretch of road is located between Carpenter Street and Ewe Hai Street. One side is accessible by car and leads to Jalan Main Bazaar while the other is an alleyway that leads to a gate at the end.

40 Ewe Hai StreetEwe Hai Street connects directly to Carpenter Street and is lined with cafes, furniture shops and businesses that have thrived for decades. A charming Chinese temple lies at the end of the street.

40 Pandungan StreetThis street dates back to the 18th Century and is lined with old shophouses housing cafes, workshops, grocery stores and convenience stores, among others.

11 Kuching WaterfrontThe scenic Kuching Waterfront is situated at the Main Bazaar. Walk along the Waterfront to see some of Kuching’s most prominent tourist attractions, such as Fort Margherita, the Astana, the Old Courthouse and the Square Tower.

11 Kampung BoyanA charming Malay village located across the Kuching Waterfront on the other side of the Sarawak River.

11 Sungei LajimKampung Sungei Lajim is also known as Kampung No. 5 and is located within the Old Kuching Kampung Heritage area.

11 Kubah RiaThe Kubah Ria complex, open for business in 2010, is famous for some of the best Halal food stalls you can find in Kuching. Add to that a sweeping view of the Sarawak River for you to enjoy while you dine.
