Half a year gone! Half a year has gone and we are leſt wondering, where to? Term 2 of 2017 has been a real whirlwind term with so many things happening and at such a fast pace. The term consisted of ten weeks and each one of them seemed to be packed full of acvies and opportunies for our students. There have been some excing new developments and there has been much work done around the school. Over the past half year, we have been working with a new student management system that has given us a few sleepless nights but has also seen raised levels of communicaon with families around student progress. We know that we do not yet have everything nailed but rest assured we are working hard to roll out new developments as the year goes by. Thank you for your paence. We have also seen some real roll growth and we are excited by this. We are interviewing for a new Year 8 teacher early next week and hope to have a new class in place for the start of Term 3. This will of course depend on noce periods for the successful applicant. On the property front, we have been thrilled to see the compleon of the new girls’ changing rooms that are being handed over next week. These will be available for use by the students from Term 3 onwards. Fencing is being erected around B block as I write this newsleer and work begins next week on the new music suite. We are thrilled by this project and will watch with eager ancipaon as the work develops. Next term will see the return of Ms Debbie Wilson from maternity leave. Ms Wilson has been in taking some classes already, in a reduced capacity, but will be back to her normal hours in Term 3. Term 3 will bring its own challenges. We will begin to look at the construcon of the 2018 metable, and how we might best meet the needs of our students going forward. This is not a simple task but requires a lot of discussion from all curriculum areas. Then there is the school Open Night to be held on Monday 31 July at 6.30pm. This is a very important evening for the school and allows us to showcase all the great things we offer young people as they enter their secondary schooling. Once again, I would like to take this opportunity of publicly thanking the staff for their efforts. Teaching is not a job that is geng easier. Every year new challenges are thrown in front of us and our staff are commied to providing the best opportunies for all of our students. Kaikorai Valley College is a very special place and it has been a pleasure to lead such a commied group of people, all working for the same cause - student success! I would like to encourage the senior students to make very good use of the holiday period to prepare for the pracce exams to be held in week 4. These examinaons are very important and it is vital that good study habits are formed. A poor performance in these exams, due to no preparaon, tells the students and teachers nothing in terms of readiness for externals. Through careful preparaon, students and teachers can then determine what gaps there might be and what needs to be gone over or re-taught. Parents, please help us out by ensuring your son/daughter gives adequate me to geng ready for these exams. New Website We are delighted to announce that our new website has gone live as of this week. The new layout and ease of access is very pleasing. We encourage you to go to kvcollege.co.nz, and have a look around. I wish you all a safe and relaxing holiday period and look forward to working with you all once again in Term 3. Rick Geerlofs, Principal

STEAMThe Year 9 and 10 visits to look at STEAM being applied in local businesses has come to an end.

The students have been to ADI Instruments, Cadburys, Greggs, Powerhouse Wind, Speights, Delta and ALSCO. Students have learnt a lot about what is happening behind the scenes in

different businesses and had the chance to think about future careers. Well done too, that the students completed the programme after school every Wednesday for 8 weeks.

Congratulations to Zac Holgate, Hamish Kirkman, Thomas Comins, Kaelin Sim, Jalena Harris, Braden Brosnan and Charlie de Woeps! Thanks to Mrs Beagley who helped to make this initiative a success and the Methodist Mission for organising the programme.

Words from the LibraryBook of the Week - ‘Forget Me Not’ by Ellie Terry. Calli June has Tourette Syndrome, which means she sometimes makes faces or noises that she does not mean to make. When she and her mother move yet again, she tries to hide her TS, but it isn’t long before the kids at her new school realise she’s different. She meets someone who sees her as she truly is - an interesting person and a good friend. However, is he brave enough to take their friendship public?Overdue BooksLibrary overdue book notices have not been reaching parents because of a technical difficulty. This problem has now been solved, so we look forward to getting overdue books returned or students can come in to the Library and request that their book be renewed.

all the students were fully involved. Later the students came down to the Centre and the Centre students and staff taught them signing for a song that will be used in our Production and a couple of dances. This is part of Mr Hooper’s disability unit. Great collaboration everyone!

Our Yr 9 Rugby boys are part of the Sassenachs Under 14 Team pictured below. This team consists of boys from KVC, Kavanagh College, Bayfield High School and Logan Park High School. Each of these schools do not have enough players for an U14 team but together we have a full squad. They play in the Sassenachs’ strip, which is neutral for all schools. This has been a very successful way for co-ed schools to provide Rugby. It also ensures that boys play in their correct age groups against their peers without having to play in a higher grade, which sometimes knocks their confidence and puts them in unsafe game situations. As the team consists of players who are just beginning and some who have played for many years, it has taken a bit of time for them to gel but after a couple of early losses the team has now had its fourth straight win. Before and after every game they get in to a huddle and cheer “Brothers”. It’s great to see the boys making new friends and coming together to enjoy Rugby.

Congratulations to Jenna Willis, 8FL, who has made the Otago 14th Grade Football Team, which will compete in the South Island championships at the end of Term 3 in Christchurch. Great effort, Jenna. Well done!
