Title By Sammy Davis The Merrick-Moore Tigers defeated Mary Potter High of Oxford 77-60, to claim the State District 2 title February 21 in a game played at the Tigers' gymnasium. The victory gives hope for a State wide 3-A title for the Tigers which will be decided in Wilson which started Wed- nesday, February 26. The Tigers slapped a full- court press on Mary Potter to jump to a 19-14 first quar- ter lead. Then going on the war path, the Tigers opened up to their biggest lead in the first half to enjoy a 40-22 half- time advantage. After the half the power- ful Tigers never lightened up in grabbing a 54-28 lead with 4:40 remaining in the third quarter. In the final quarter Mary Potter narrowed the margin to 67-56 with 2:50 remaining in the contest, but the Tigers rebounding and shooting strength was too much for Mary Potter to bear. It was an impressive vic- tory for Coach Bobby John- son's chargers who had strug- gled to beat Mary Potter twice during the regular season. One of those games was decided by a last second bucket to give the Tigers a 65-63 vic- tory. The Tigers attack was led by Harold McCorkle and Jerome"Rap" Brown with 21 points each. Kenneth Hinton added 17 points to the cause. Mary Potter, who ended its season with a 14-6 record had four men in double figures. The championship game was play- ed the following Saturday. The Homets, fresh from a 101-86 victory over J. T. Bar- ber of New Bem, in the quar- ter finals, fell behind 22-12 at the end of the first quarter. Then Adkins, taking advan- tage of Hillside's cold spell jumped to a 52-25 lead at the half. In the third quarter Adkins scored 27 points to keep a steady beat 79-50. Top scorers for Adkins were Ned Murrell 27, Jim Hart 26 and Raymond Ricks 22.
