The Merrick-Moore Tigersdefeated Mary Potter High ofOxford 77-60, to claim theState District 2 title February21 in a game played at the
Tigers' gymnasium.
The victory gives hope fora State wide 3-A title for the
Tigers which will be decidedin Wilson which started Wed-nesday, February 26.
The Tigers slapped a full-court press on Mary Potterto jump to a 19-14 first quar-
ter lead.
Then going on the war
path, the Tigers opened up to
their biggest lead in the firsthalf to enjoy a 40-22 half-time advantage.
After the half the power-
ful Tigers never lightened up
in grabbing a 54-28 lead
with 4:40 remaining in thethird quarter.
In the final quarter MaryPotter narrowed the marginto 67-56 with 2:50 remaining
in the contest, but the Tigersrebounding and shootingstrength was too much for
Mary Potter to bear.
It was an impressive vic-
tory for Coach Bobby John-son's chargers who had strug-gled to beat Mary Potter twiceduring the regular season. One
of those games was decidedby a last second bucket to
give the Tigers a 65-63 vic-tory.
The Tigers attack was ledby Harold McCorkle and
Jerome"Rap" Brown with 21points each. Kenneth Hintonadded 17 points to the cause.
Mary Potter, who ended itsseason with a 14-6 record hadfour men in double figures.They were George Allen, 16,Joseph Waldon, 15, Bernard
Moore 14 and Tommy Over-by 10.
Merrick-Moore will carry a20-1 record into the StateTournament with the onlyloss being a 69-58 decision inthe hands of th£ - HillsideHornets.

The Hornets of HillsideHigh fell to the command of
Adkins High of Kinston and
dropped a 91-60 decision inthe NCHSAC State 4-A semi-
final round in Wilson Febru-
ary 20,
The loss halted any chancesfor a shot at the state champ-
ionship for the Hornets. Thechampionship game was play-ed the following Saturday.
The Homets, fresh from a
101-86 victory over J. T. Bar-
ber of New Bem, in the quar-
ter finals, fell behind 22-12 at
the end of the first quarter.
Then Adkins, taking advan-tage of Hillside's cold spell
jumped to a 52-25 lead at the
half.In the third quarter Adkins
scored 27 points to keep a
steady beat 79-50.
Top scorers for Adkins
were Ned Murrell 27, Jim
Hart 26 and Raymond Ricks
22.The Hornets were led by
Ellis Allen with 20 and John-
ny Russell hitting 12.
