Lesson Plan Overview
Good Day DPSCD K-2 Students!
Happy Monday! Please see the activities below to be completed independently on
Monday, November 16, 2020 while your teacher prepares to teach virtually. As a K-2 student,
you have an opportunity to explore a little more about the coronavirus and COVID-19 and
learn ways to keep you and your family safe. In this schedule, we have mapped out lessons
for one full day of learning that will engage you in activities that make you think and ask
questions about the coronavirus and COVID-19. *Students, you may not be able to print, that
is OKAY, the worksheet provides an outline for how you might organize your notes on your
own sheets of paper.

had an opportunity to talk about with their peers or adults in their lives.

Students may want to know more about coronavirus – what it is and how it
spreads.

but they can be seen

Activity 2: What is Coronavirus?
Colds, flu, and coronavirus are caused by germs; tiny living things that
invade our body and makes us sick. Germs are too small to see with
your eyes or even a magnifying glass, but they can be seen using a
microscope.
Watch the video clip: Sid the Science Kid and answer the
questions below:
1. How did the germ get from Robert’s nose to the girl twirling the
baton?
2. How do you think germs on our hands get into our eyes, nose, and
mouth where they can make us sick?
3. How can we get germs off our hands?

Directions:
Activity 3: What happens when we wash our hands? Children are told over and over again to wash their hands, yet, that instruction is not
followed frequently enough.

conduct an
investigation.
• Small bowl
of water
• Pepper
• Liquid
soap
• Toothpick
(optional)
1. Set up the investigation.
2. Fill a small bowl with water.
3. Evenly add “germs” (pepper) to the
surface of the water.
4. MAKE A PREDICTION: Students will
write down or draw what they think
will happen when they dip the
toothpick or their finger into the
water.
5. Students place their toothpick or
finger in the center of the bowl for 3
seconds then remove it.
6. Draw or write down what happened.
7. Have students cover the toothpick or
finger in liquid soap.
8. MAKE A PREDICTION: Students will
write down or draw what they think
will happen when they dip the
toothpick or their finger into the
water. Do they think something
different will happen?
9. Students place their soap covered
toothpick or finger in the center of
the bowl for 3 seconds then remove
it.
10. Have students write down or draw
what happened.
11. Debrief by asking students what they
figured out from the investigation.
12. Students can watch the episode
from Sid the Science Kid: The Big
Sneeze.

Activity 4: How do we protect ourselves and others? Global Handwashing Day is observed every year on October 15. The goal of Global Handwashing
Day is to increase awareness and understanding about the importance of handwashing with soap as
an effective and affordable way to prevent diseases and save lives.
