Justice Alfieri can be seen as the

person who represents justice and law because he is a lawyer.

Throughout the play, when people obey the law, it can often have bad effects e.g. Vinny Bolzano and when Eddie betrays Marco and Rodolpho.

Alfieri tries to make Marco see that his actions may not be just as only God can judge them: ‘You hear? Only God makes justice.’

• It can be seen that there is justice when Marco kills Eddie because Eddie has been dishonourable and betrayed Marco’s family so Marco believes he had the right to get revenge and stand up for his family.

Honour In the 1950’s when A View

From The Bridge was wrote for most people, honour meant more to people than the law. The most dishonourable thing someone could do at this time was to betray someone.

Honour is important to Eddie as he says: ‘It’s an honour B, I mean it’ when their cousins are about to arrive. Letting their family stay with them is an honourable thing to do even though it is against the law.

• Eddie thinks that Vinny Bolzano is a dishonourable person because he breaks the code of honour: ‘A guy do a thing like that? How’s he gonna show his face?’ This is ironic because Eddie ends up doing the same thing and breaking the code of honour too.

Betrayal Eddie betrays his family by calling

immigration even when Alfieri tells him ‘You wont have a friend in the world, Eddie!’ This shows that Eddie may not care as much about being honourable and how people think of him if it means getting what he wants.

It could be seen that Catherine betrays Eddie because he has always looked after her and does whatever he feels is best for her. By dating Rodolpho, Eddie feels that Catherine has betrayed him, also because Eddie has not given permission to Rodolpho to date Catherine.

• Marco also betrays Alfieri by killing Eddie when he said he wouldn’t: ‘To promise not to kill is not dishonourable’. This shows that honour means more to Marco than betraying and lying.
