As we look back over the year, 2009, the Junior School has had an incredibly busy time. We began with the ‘Welcome to New Parents’ from Transition to Year 12 that was generously organised by the P&F.

Sports carnival after sports carnival followed with swimming, cross-country, athletics and all the WAS, HICES and CIS representative opportunities. Congratulations to all those who competed. Chess was on the agenda with the WAS Chess Tournament hosted by All Saints’ and the Schools Competition. All Saints’ ‘A’ took out the WAS Championship and came a very close second in the Schools Competition.

All of the primary students had the opportunity to experience camp life. Years 3 and 4 visited Lake Canobolas and Years 5 and 6 went to the Bruinbin Camp, just off the Bridle Track. We were really lucky to have great teams of teachers, Gappies and parents to help us enjoy every aspect of each camp.

One of the most important projects this year has been peer support. Combining all of the Junior School and splitting into small groups, we discussed and learnt about resilience and friendship. In our groups we also regularly visited Macquarie Care Nursing Home and played bingo and talked with the residents there.

The “Go Fish” musical was a real highlight on the Junior School calendar. The Infants classes created a masterpiece in sight and sound that was extremely enjoyable and looked like great fun to be in.

We also can be proud of the success at the Bathurst Eisteddfod with many firsts, seconds and thirds in verse speaking, choirs and instrumental.

Debating was a big plus for this year with Year 6 winning all but one debate. Debates were against Bathurst Christian School, Orange Christian School, The Scots School and Dubbo Christian School.

Year 6 also held some cake stalls and ice-block stalls this year selling plenty of cakes and goodies whilst raising lots of money for the Valedictory Dinner and their gift to the College.

Science Week was a fun experience. This year’s theme was Astronomy. We welcomed Professor David McKinnon and several students from CSU for a talk and many science based experiments.

Every fortnight throughout the year the Student Representative Council has met to discuss issues within the College and projects for the future. We would like to thank all the representatives who have given up their lunch times to meet with us.

It has been an action packed year where we have been fortunate to experience so many different things and activities that makes All Saints’ College Junior School a special place to be.

On Friday, 21st November, students, parents, friends and staff gathered together in the College Chapel to celebrate Year 6 and their completion of Primary School. Father Paul Woodhart conducted the service and various items performed by the students were sprinkled throughout the proceedings. This included musical items and five puppet shows that reflected discos, PE injuries, camp, debating and sports carnivals.

At the conclusion of the service, everyone gathered outside for photographs and pre-dinner food. Once this was finished, everyone took their seats in the Dining Room which had been decorated by parents that afternoon. Mr Chris Jackman, Head of Junior School, welcomed everybody and Mrs Kay Murray (Year 6 teacher) extended a thank you to all involved in the preparation of the dinner. The main meal was served which was then followed by presentations to the College, the students and Mrs Murray. After dessert the Junior School Captains, Angus McClelland and Eliza Crozier,

cut the traditional cake.To finish the night, the students

performed a dance to the music of “High School Musical”. The night was very special and everybody had a great time. A big thank you is extended to all individuals who contributed in some form towards the success of the night. Mrs Kay Murray

“Creating Great Smiles”

MusicIt has been another busy year for Junior

School Music in 2009. In Terms 1 and 2, the students in Kindergarten to Year 2 busily prepared for their biennial musical. This year, they performed “Go Fish” under the musical expertise of Mrs Frances McLeod. This was an exciting performance for the Infants children and the College community was very impressed with their wonderful performances in the Bickerdike Centre.

In 2009, we have also been visited by two Musica Viva groups - “The World According to James” (a Jazz ensemble consisting of a trombone, pocket trumpet, alto saxophone, double bass and drum kit) and “Sounds Baroque” (a Baroque ensemble comprising a harpsichord, soprano, baritone and viola de gamba - a Baroque string instrument).

As well as studying the music of our visiting Musica Viva groups, Kindergarten to Year 2 have been working on the basic elements of music, while Years 3 to 6 have worked on their recorder skills, as well as covering a variety of topics such as World Music, Jazz and Syncopation.

In Term 3, we farewelled Mrs Frances McLeod as she went on maternity leave and welcomed Ms Michelle Griffin to replace her for Years 1 and 2 and Years 5 and 6 Choir. We congratulate Mrs McLeod on the birth of her daughter Charlotte Abigail, sister to Jemima.

Term 3 was a busy time in the Junior School as we prepared for the annual Bathurst Eisteddfod. This year, the Junior School performed with such expertise and talent that we received some wonderful results. Notable performances included first places for our Beginner Strings, Kindergarten Choir and Year 6 Recorder as well as many successes in other sections. We were all very proud of the way that the Junior School students represented themselves and the College.

Transition has been an exciting and musical place this year, with the students learning a

Chess

It has been another successful year. The highlight was our victory in the WAS Chess Competition. Teams were entered from Blue Mountains Grammar, Kinross Wolaroi, Orange Christian School and The Scots School. Most schools were represented by two teams in both the seniors and juniors. For the first time the students were competing for the WAS Chess Trophy, an impressive silver cup resembling the Melbourne Cup! The team with the highest score during the competition would also be awarded special medals to mark the occasion. The All Saints’ ‘A’ team won the team competition for the highest score and were awarded the medals. The team members were Hugh Elbourne, Travis Cartwright, Melanie Lo and Victor Chua. The ‘B’ team (Marcus Milton, Will Armstrong, Baden Sinclair and Sarah Goodman) was a creditable equal third with Blue Mountains Grammar. In the junior games, All Saints’ ‘A’ (Ella Menzies, Erin Cobcroft, Christopher Lo and Anna Cartwright) scored equal second place with All Saints’ ‘B’ (Jack Morrison, Tim Crow, Angela Phillips and Thomas Geyer). Kinross Wolaroi was victorious in this section. We were delighted to receive the WAS Trophy with the highest points overall. Kinross Wolaroi was second and Blue Mountains Grammar third. A magnificent performance by our skilled players.

The second major chess tournament was the Bathurst Primary Schools Competition.

From a total of 112 games, All Saints’ won 80, lost 25 and drew 7. Another outstanding performance from our students. In total there were 15 teams competing and the standard of chess was very high. Our best performing player was Travis Cartwright with a perfect score of 14 wins from 14 games. The final results saw the ‘A’ team placed second to St Philomena’s with a margin of 0.5 points. Our ‘B’ team scored a creditable fifth place.

In the School Championships, the standard of play was excellent with a number of entries from Years 3 to 6. Games were played during lunchtime and, because it was a knockout competition, the pressure was on from the very first round. The final results were as follows: Junior Girl Champion - Erin Cobcroft; Junior Boy Champion - Jack Morrison; Senior Girl Champion - Melanie Lo and Senior Boy Champion - Travis Cartwright. In the House Chess Competition for 2009, Bradwardine scored a very close win with 54 points to Esrom’s 53.

Congratulations to all of our chess players on what has been a very successful year. I would like to express my personal thanks to both Mrs Paula Elbourne and Mrs Jennifer Cartwright who kindly assisted throughout the year in both transporting and supervising our teams. Your generous assistance over the past years has been greatly appreciated.

Tournament of the Minds

Maths Club

At the beginning of Term 3, seven students from Years 5 and 6 met on a regular basis after school to work on the Tournament of Minds Long Term Challenge. This year the students chose the category Language/Literature. The problem posed was that all the books in the world had suddenly disappeared and that all stories needed to be told orally.

During the presentation the team had to demonstrate why the books had vanished, target an audience for a story they had to create and say why the story characters were so important to the audience. The answers were all written as a play. Costumes were created out of calico, hessian and recycled products.

Hugh Elbourne, Sarah Goodman, Patrick Fisher, Julia Morgan, Marcus Milton, Lachlan McAloney and Hannah Armstrong then gathered at Orange High School on August 29th to reveal their efforts. It was a very wet and miserable day. The team performed brilliantly. However, they did not win the competition.

I would like to thank the students for their fantastic efforts and dedication to the task. Thank you to the parents for supporting me and their children, especially the many hours spent after school. I have thoroughly enjoyed this year’s Tournament of Minds and look forward to next year. Mrs Kay Murray (Tournament of Minds Co-ordinator)

Maths Club has continued to be an important highlight in the Kindergarten to Year 2 week this year. Although we have had a number of interruptions due to preparation for our wonderful musical, “Go Fish”, and preparation for Verse Speaking in the Bathurst Eisteddfod, the children have benefited from this wonderful opportunity to work mathematically in small groups. The 16 groups, with four or five students per group, have enjoyed individual support and we are most grateful for the small but committed group of parents who help. Without them it would be impossible for all children to be actively involved in such activities as pouring water to measure capacity, using the balance beam to compare mass, make 3D objects and learn and follow rules in board games.

The children are in ability groupings so that able mathematicians are extended,

The Tournament of Minds team.

those needing support receive it and all are challenged to extend their knowledge and ability.

The value of providing the children with such positive and concrete mathematical experiences should result in a solid grounding and understanding of concepts which will hopefully equip them for their future work in Mathematics.

We are conscious of the many demands on parents’ time and greatly appreciate the commitment some have been able to give to support us. We look forward to continuing this programme next year and hope that more parents will be free to share their children’s excitement as they explore the marvels of Mathematics!

“Oceans of fun” sums up the Infants Musical, “Go Fish”, performed on Wednesday 27th and Friday 29th May. The Kindergarten to Year 2 children were full of enthusiasm and energy as they took to the stage and entranced the audience with a seven-legged Octopus, a Tuna Fish that couldn’t sing in tune, a Zebra Fish with spots, a Blow Fish with allergies, a Star Fish that had no performing roles and a Clown Fish that was a joke!

National Tree Planting DayOn Sunday, 2nd August, Australians

celebrated National Tree Planting Day. On this day, all Australian residents were encouraged to plant some trees in order to help combat the battle with carbon emissions. Some of the youngest students at All Saints’ College, the Kindergarten class, were assisted by Years 5 and 6 students in planting some Eucalyptus Kruseana trees on Friday, 31st July.

Woven into the performance were the energetic Card Sharks, a sleek Electric Eel, performing Clowns, lively Sea Horses, groovy Red Snappers and crabby Crabs that scuttled across the stage. While a Needle Fish needled away the gentle Angel Fish tried to keep the peace and came up with a solution to the Tiger Shark’s dilemma of where to find friends. The dramatic appearance of The Great White Shark, heralded by the Sword

Fish, informed Tiger Shark that everyone is unique, valued and worthy of friendship.

The wonderful support of parents who made costumes, helped paint the backdrop and applied make-up, contributed to their children’s success. It was a delight to see the many hours of rehearsal result in a sparkling performance of colour, music, dance and drama that amazed and thrilled us all! Mrs Ruth Clements (Infants Co-ordinator)

The College’s groundsman, Mr Charlie Hall, was present to teach the children how to plant the trees and the importance of looking after the trees we have in our community.

Having an awareness of how acting locally can contribute to solving global problems is an essential part of today’s curriculum.

Mr Chris Jackman

2009 has been an exciting year of changes and new dynamics. The many years of combined rich and varied experience of the teachers, Mrs Liz Rolfe, Mrs Deb Porter, Mrs Sally Parsons and Mrs Eva Vincze (Teacher’s Aide), has culminated in a stimulating and enthusiastic team and wonderful programme for the children.

We passionately believe that learning through play is an essential part of our Early Childhood programme. Our morning routine revolves around developmental play, giving the children opportunities to explore and engage in a range of activities. They are encouraged to try activities which help them develop their fine motor, cognitive, social, computer and manipulative skills.

The ‘Jolly Phonics’ programme introduces over 40 phonemes (sounds) in the English language. Each phoneme has an action and a related story and variety of activities to help consolidate learning. It has proven to be very successful and the children have a sound understanding of the phonemes through visual and aural recognition and in written form. Related craft activities help consolidate learning as well as develop fine motor and creative skills. The ‘Princesses and Pirates Party’ was surely a highlight of the programme.

The Mathematics programme, ‘Exploring Maths’, has been very successful in introducing the children to a wide variety of concepts including number, shape, 2D space, 3D space, volume, length, position, temperature and height. The programme incorporates hands-on activities, games and written work.

The children participate in all these activities with enthusiasm.

The Personal Development units this year have again included the PALS programme (Playing and Learning to Socialise), addressing relationships and appropriate ways of relating to others; ‘Milly and Molly ’ introducing children to different situations that need to be worked through and resolved in positive ways; ‘Healthy Little Ears’ helping children learn about their ears and the importance of blowing their nose effectively and ‘Healthy Living’ encouraging children to look at how they can live and maintain a healthy lifestyle. These units have encouraged the children to connect with the world around them and the importance of looking after themselves and others.

It is always an exciting time when we have visitors. Children eagerly wait their turn to take our class mascot, ‘Buddy Bear’, home for a play. Parents have visited the College on special occasions such as the Easter Hat Parade, the Mother’s Day morning tea and the Father’s Day breakfast. The mums enjoyed Devonshire Tea in the warm sunshine while the dads set their alarm clocks to attend a continental breakfast in Transition and enjoyed some activities with their child.

Outdoor play is an important part of the Transition programme. There has been an ongoing restructuring of the Transition playground this year. The children have put the Transition sandpit, gross motor equipment and stage to good use. The children love playing soccer on the oval, playing Duck-Duck-

Goose, swinging high on the new swings, commandeering the fort and rolling down the mounds allowing them to develop their large muscle groups, socialise with children from the other class and play co-operatively.

We have integrated a Perceptual Motor Programme this year. The programme includes activities designed to build lateral, bilateral and cross-over co-ordination of the body, strengthening of hand and forearm muscles, balance, eye/hand/foot co-ordination and depth perception. Children are extended in enjoyable and challenging motor activities that engage their body and mind together. These activities build solid foundations for development in all learning areas.

The children enjoy a variety of extra-curricular activities. Japanese with Mr David Pike exposes the children to the Japanese language and culture. Music with Mrs Frances McLeod, Miss Hilary Turnbull and Mrs Robyn Crowley introduces them to Kodaly music. They enjoy singing, dance and rhythm activities. Library lessons with Mrs Maree Crofts are always an exciting time of stories and craft activities. Father Paul Woodhart visits once a week for Christian Studies and tells the children Bible stories and helps them understand the Christian life and God’s love for them. We also welcomed Mr Mike Schultz while Father Paul was on long service leave. A visit to the Chapel is always a special occasion. Physical Education with Mr Eliot Sanger has been an exciting and challenging experience and has helped the children develop their balance, flexibility, co-ordination and strength.

Excursions are always an exciting time and help children feel part of their community. Bathurst City Library visits for ‘Story Time’ with Natalie and her team are a time T5 and T2 look forward to. Natalie is an enthusiastic storyteller and always has an amazing craft activity for the children to participate in and take home. An informative visit to Bathurst Fire Station has equipped the children with fire safety procedures and the importance of knowing their address and phone number and how to dial ‘000’ in an emergency. The children always enjoy an excursion to the Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Centre to watch the award winning Patch Theatre Company

performances. This year we watched “The Boy Who Could Fly”, a whimsical ride on the wings of Henry Horatio Richard O’Dockerty’s fantasy, to become the fastest boy in the world which featured a four piece rock/pop band! Our Transition picnic in Peace Park is always a fitting end to the school year. It is a time for relaxation and fun and final goodbyes.

Our Transition Christmas Concert is a highlight and we acknowledge how much the children have grown and matured over the year.

The children enjoyed and appreciated having Mr Matt Rideout, Mr Tim Witherden, Miss Jasmin Morrison and Mr Christian

Moffatt, (Gappies) and extra helpers Mrs Paula Elbourne, Mrs Melissa Rumble and CSU student Miss Ashlea Fulton. Their help, assistance and enthusiasm have been invaluable. Many thanks!

We would like to thank all the parents and children for a wonderful year. We have enjoyed teaching ‘Transition to School’ very much and greatly appreciated your support and eagerness throughout the year. We wish you and your children all the very best for next year and pray you have a happy, safe and relaxing holiday and joyous Christmas and New Year.

In 2009 Kindergarten has had an exciting and eventful year. We have taken part in many rich and meaningful experiences. The class of 2009 consisted of 21 delightful and caring students. Great friendships were formed and we achieved an enormous amount academically, socially, spiritually and on the sporting field. The Kindergarten students truly thrived on such an holistic start to their formal schooling.

Kindergarten had the opportunity to immerse themselves in numerous experiences this year. A few of the highlights included:

* the Buddy Programme: Each Kindergarten child was assigned a Year 6 ‘buddy’. Their buddy was an exceptional asset to each child’s academic and social pursuits.

* the Swimming Carnival: Taking part in an across-the-pool race proved to be an exciting activity. It was also a great way for each student to build their confidence in the pool.

* the Cross-Country and Athletics Carnivals: These experiences allowed the children to enhance their fitness and to enjoy being part of a Sporting House.

* the Easter Hat Parade: All students created an amazing millinery piece that was modelled expertly in the annual Easter Hat Parade.

* Mini Excursions: Kindergarten had some wonderful times within the College gates. They enjoyed a visit to the agricultural plot to learn how baby animals grow and change. This was followed up by a programme designed to assist the children to care for pets appropriately. The children also had the opportunity to plant trees in the College grounds for National Tree Day. This helped them to understand the importance of the day.

* Assembly and the Bathurst Eisteddfod: Kindergarten students had the privilege of hosting assembly on a number of occasions in 2009. This helped them to build the confidence to perform superbly in the Verse Speaking, Choir and Percussion Sections at the Bathurst Eisteddfod.

* Sport: 2009 heralded the opportunity for Kindergarten children to take part in All Saints’ sporting teams. This was a great success as was often reflected in the children’s weekly journal writing.

* the Infants Thanksgiving Service and the Nativity Tableau: This was a lovely experience for the Kindergarten children to take part in. It reinforced the importance of our spirituality at All Saints’.

I would like to thank all of those parents and family members who have helped Kindergarten this year. We have had many helpers with the before school reading programme, Maths Club and general helpers. This assistance has been invaluable and I am extremely grateful for this help.

I must also thank our Gap students - Tim, Matt, Victoria and Alex - for all of their assistance this year as well.

I wish all of the 2009 Kindergarten students all the very best as they progress into Year 1. I have had an extremely enjoyable and satisfying year thanks to such a wonderful group of children. I have been amazed at their growth and development. Thank you Kindergarten, and good luck with your future endeavours.

This has been an exciting year for 1S and 1R, marked by celebrations. We celebrated excitedly Miss Sally Gosper’s marriage at the beginning of the year and then, in September, the birth of her daughter, Lydia Kate.

We celebrated the wonderful success of our musical, “Go Fish”, in Term 2, full of colour, movement, music and drama.

In Term 3 we were excited to gain second place in the Bathurst Eisteddfod with our Verse Speaking Choir and 1R also celebrated their success with their small group mimes and Creative Writing.

Our Science Gala Day celebrated the Year of Astronomy and we were over the moon with our experiments and Moon Journal keeping!

Celebrating Easter with our Hat Parade, Mother’s and Father’s Days, Anzac Day and Christmas as well as children’s birthdays along the way, punctuated our year with joy and laughter.

We have celebrated the changing seasons and the wonders in our world as we have studied the sea, families and pets, Australian spiders and environmental effects on housing and people’s lives. Carnivals of swimming, cross-country and athletics, leading assemblies, taking part in Music, Japanese, PE and Sport and visiting the Life Education Van have enabled us to celebrate the abilities with which we are blessed.

The spiritual aspect of our lives has been enriched and challenged through our Thought for the Day, Christian Studies with Mrs Jenny

Morrison, weekly chapel services and the Benefactors’ Service. The year culminated with the wonderful celebration of our year in

the Infants Thanksgiving Service. We are grateful for those parents who have been able to help

us in the classroom by listening to us read, helping with Maths Club, bringing in pets for our Pets’ Visit and helping us build our houses.

We are also grateful for Mrs Peta Lidster and Mrs Lisette Hoskins who have contributed wonderfully in Mrs Sally Allcorn’s absence.

The students are a friendly and exuberant group who have excelled in many areas and coloured their year with joy. I wish them every success as they travel into Year 2 next year.
