Vision StatementThe Junior League of Richmond's trained and talented members serve women, youth, and families for the purpose of reaching goals, providing support, and generating pride in the community.

We are most grateful for the creative talent and time dedicated by Ginny Lawrence, JLR Member, on the design of this year’s Annual Report. Additionally, we would like to thank Natalie May, Iris Holliday, Alexis Fisher-Rizk, Katherine Jones, Katrina Amos, and Sibyl FaJohn for their contributions.

Dear Friends,

What a wonderful year it has been for the Junior League of Richmond!

We kicked off the fall with an inspirational and energizing visit from Toni

Freeman, President of The Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc.,

who shared with us her passion for being a Leaguer for Life. Toni’s message

was the perfect complement to kicking off our Annual Fund campaign theme of

“Be a JLR Anchor,” recognizing that an anchor is vital to providing stability and

support.

The momentum continued as over 3,200 participants attended our interactive

Touch a Truck event, celebrating the personnel who protect, serve, and build

our community, and then as we rebranded our Book & Author Event with a logo that will stand the test of time. We

were delighted this year to bring Book & Author to our East End partner families with a “Taste of New Orleans”

program featuring world-renowned chef and cookbook author, Lolis Eric Elie.

Whether from an event ticket purchaser or a corporate sponsor, support received from our annual fundraisers plays

a critical role in funding our community programs that serve the children and families of Richmond and beyond. We

are extremely grateful for living in such a generous community that enables our training and community programs.

I am particularly proud of the community focus at this year’s General Membership Meetings and the correlated

record attendance. By featuring East End partners at each gathering, we educated our entire membership on the

magnitude of need in our local neighborhoods and on the various ways we can individually and collectively use our

talents to make a difference. Our guest speakers broadened our perspectives and demonstrated our shared

commitment to the city’s underserved population.

The Board of Directors and Strategic Planning Committee have my heartfelt thanks for taking the time to ensure a

collaborative and thorough planning process. The thoughtful work they performed is reflected in our new Strategic

Plan and will allow us to move forward as the most effective possible organization.

It has been a true privilege to serve as the President of the Junior League of Richmond, and I take pride in being a

member alongside such remarkable women. The League has made me feel a part of the local community and has

positioned me to continue serving Richmond and beyond. For that, I am tremendously thankful!

I invite you to learn more about the Junior League of Richmond by going to our newly redesigned website --

www.jlrichmond.org. We welcome new members to join our volunteer efforts in local neighborhoods and new

partners to support our mission of building better communities!

Michelle Barthelemy Miller

2013-2014 President

The Junior League Ripple Effect

Members Serving on Boards in the Community

Nearly 90 years of experience has taught the Junior League of Richmond that strong leaders make strong communities. By training women to be effective collaborators and committed volunteers, the League equips members to go out and serve their communities. We are grateful for the women who not only serve the needs of our League, but also provide service to other local organizations.

TILI

The Training Institute for Leadership Impact (TILI) provided 11 classes to JLR members, promoted live AJLI webinars, and organized a roundtable of community experts at the February General Membership Meeting focusing on pertinent social issues that impact community volunteerism. Members participated in courses that supported personal, professional, and volunteer growth, including Personal Finance and an exploration of the women’s leadership book, Lean In.

Property improvements and building staff capacity were the focus for The Clothes Rack as it entered its 66th year. Nearly 40,000 customers were welcomed by the new artistic window displays at Cary Street and reorganized sales floors at both store locations. Anna Vanneman joined the team as Assistant Director of Retail Operations and Sunday hours were added at Stratford Hills. The Clothes Rack was proud to complete its 7th year of partnership with Richmond Public Schools in providing merchandise processing and preparation training to students with learning disabilities.

The General Membership Meetings were focused on bringing the local community to Junior League members. Special guest speaker Heidi Abbott shared her passion for the Creighton Court community. Councilwoman Cynthia Newbille moderated a community panel featuring Communities in Schools, Blue Sky Fund, and ChildSavers that provided insights on the needs and challenges they face everyday and ways JLR members can help. We also heard the emotional personal story of a high school student in an unstable housing situation until Change the World RVA provided support.

Page 7: Junior League of Richmond FY14 Annual Report

“I wanted an organized place to volunteer... I didn’t expect to receive in turnthe amount of leadership training.” Alexis Fisher-Rizk, JLR Member

Twenty up and coming JLR members attended “Leadership Day” in April, where they not only learned about effective leadership skills but also heard from three “seasoned” leaders. Carrie Roth, CEO of the Virginia Biotechnology Research Park, Jessica Ronky Haddad, the new managing editor of Richmond magazine’s R•Home, and Jayne D. Shaw, Director of Development at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, shared their stories and experiences. This valuable day is provided annually by TILI.

Done in a Day (DIAD) had a great year organizing over 50 events and continuing to work with some of our favorite partners - Hospital Hospitality House (HHH), Peter Paul Development Center, and Woodville Elementary. DIAD worked for the first time with Richmond Promise Neighborhood to organize volunteer support for Info Feast programs serving East End families. Volunteers prepared meals for HHH, went caroling at Lakewood Manor, planted a garden at the Evelyn D. Reinhart Guest House, decorated SCAN’s waiting room, and celebrated Thanksgiving with Anna Julia Cooper Episcopal School students.

CommunityAdvisory

Board

The Community Advisory Board (CAB) provides a two-way communication link between the League and our community. CAB members offered valuable input this past year during the strategic planning process. CAB members provided insights on new and changing needs in the East End. One area of focus recommended was resident engagement, which has been incorporated into the new plan as the League explores opportunities to work alongside community residents on volunteer projects.

We are thrilled that last year included the start of a new partnership with RPN, which has been valuable to the League’s work on supporting residents of the East End. It was a busy first year as the League participated in Family Engagement Research Based Action Team meetings and provided volunteers for two Community Field Days and four Info Feast programs that collectively served 1,750 residents. With a shared vision for improving educational and developmental needs of children, we look forward to continuing our collaboration with Richmond Promise Neighborhood and to building on last year’s successes.

This year we partnered with Anna Julia Cooper Episcopal School to bring Kids in the Kitchen to a group of 7th grade girls. The goal of the Kids in the Kitchen initiative is to prevent obesity and its associated health risks by empowering children and youth to make healthy lifestyle choices. Students rolled up their sleeves alongside Junior League members to prepare four healthy dinners and participate in educational activities. The program year culminated with a healthy dinner at a local hibachi restaurant.

Teaming up with Peter Paul Development Center, our 5th year of providing Good Sports to students in 3rd and 4th grades was a home run! Good Sports brought in area athletic teams to teach the students a variety of fun and challenging sports while modeling the characteristics of honesty, courage, compassion, generosity, fidelity, integrity, fairness and self-control. One of the year’s highlights was a visit from the Richard Bland Community College men‘s basketball team. It brought big smiles to the kids’ faces when the entire team walked into the gymnasium for our program night!

The Junior League of Richmond's Literacy Through Arts Outreach Committee (LTAO) strives to instill a love of reading through art by hosting monthly events for children and their families. One of the monthly programs was a Family Fun Night held at the Northside YMCA. Volunteers read “The Story of Ferdinand” and children made masks related to the characters with help from their family members. Families also received a copy of the book to take home.

The Families First program held six monthly events during the school year for 3rd and 4th graders and their families at Woodville Elementary. Each program, serving between 50 and 60 people, consisted of dinner and an interactive seminar focusing on topics such as study skills, health and nutrition, and cultural awareness. Students received takeaway materials and books. The committee also helped sponsor a "book tasting" program during the school day for the entire 3rd grade, as well as breakfast for the teachers of Woodville during Teacher Appreciation week.

Mentoring

The 2013-2014 League year was full of heartfelt relationship building for the Mentoring Committee. Ten dedicated women committed an hour each week from October through May to spend time with a child at Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School in the East End. Much of the time was devoted to learning more about the child's home life so that mentors could more adequately enhance their mentee’s experience while at school. The group had an end-of-year celebration at Jumpology, and fun was had by all!

Cherry Peters, a member of the Junior League of Richmond for 46 years,

started volunteering in grade school, and she hasn’t stopped since. She

admits that there is no better feeling than making a difference in people’s lives.

Cherry was recognized for her commitment with her selection as the 2014

YWCA Outstanding Women Awards Honoree in Volunteerism. She received

this distinguished award “for her ability to take a group of diverse individuals

with different interests and organize them into a team that utilizes everyone’s

strengths to work toward a common goal.” This award specifically honors her

work with FRIENDS Association for Children, an organization that prepares

children for success in school and life. Her resume of volunteer work includes

the FRIENDS Association, the Junior League of Richmond, United Way, the YWCA, and the Visual Arts Center. In the past,

she has received JLR’s prestigious Barbara Ransome Andrews Award in celebration of her exceptional volunteer service

to the JLR and the Richmond community. She has been a servant leader in her church, Second Presbyterian, for 40 years.

Cherry’s leadership, selflessness, and commitment to volunteerism have made a significant impact on the Richmond

community for more than four decades.

Barbara Ransome Andrews AwardThe Barbara Ransome Andrews Award, named for one of our most esteemed and beloved members, honors a Sustainer member’s outstanding community service. This award is the highest and most prestigious award presented by the JLR, and is given to a Sustainer who has distinguished herself by service to her community and the Junior League through extensive and exemplary volunteer activities. This year’s recipient, Jane Helfrich, joined the JLR in 1982 and served in many leadership capacities, including President. She went on to be JLR’s first Executive Director. Outside of the League, she helped found Court Appointed Special Advocates, Communities in Schools, and the Sacred Heart Center. Jane has served in leadership positions with Historic Richmond Foundation, Fan Free Clinic, and United Way. She currently is the CEO of Richmond Metropolitan Habitat for Humanity. Jane demonstrates true servant leadership and continues to work to make her community a better place.

Pinkie W. Smith AwardThe Pinkie W. Smith Award, established in 1998, commemorates the exemplary service and dedication to volunteering that was evident in the life of Pinkie Smith. This award for excellence in volunteerism was awarded to Heidi Vaiksnoras, an “unsung hero” who consistently performs above average League requirements and demonstrates excellence in volunteer work, dedication, and loyalty to the JLR. Heidi has served on the Board of Directors as Finance Vice President and Assistant to the President, as well as in Community, Membership, and Events Councils. It is not her specific placements or level of leadership that define her as a recipient of this award; it is her character, leadership style, and integrity that truly elevate her to this high honor.

Community Volunteerism AwardSara Shelton received the Community Volunteerism Award, which recognizes a member who has contributed significant, outstanding volunteer time and effort to improve the quality of life in the Richmond community. Sara has served on committees in both the Membership and Community Councils, as Vice President of Community, the Director of Communications and as a TILI faculty member. Her selfless devotion and infectious passion for the League and community are why she is so deserving of this recognition and award.

Sustainers are women who

have volunteered for a

minimum of 10 years in the

Junior League, and continue

to play a vital role in the

organization. These life long

members continue hands on

service in the community,

participate in educational

programs, give back to the

League by serving on

boards and committees, and

work with Actives in an

advisory capacity. Many

Sustainers continue service

as “Sustainer Doers” and

work on community minded

projects throughout the year.

Their numerous projects

have included hosting meals

and bingo parties at the VCU

Medical Center Hospitality

House, planting fall and

summer gardens, organizing

ice cream parties at Safe

Harbor Women's Shelter,

stocking the food closet at

the Fan Free Clinic, and

landscaping projects at the

Southside Child Development

Center.

After years of hard work and

dedication to serving the

community, the Junior League

of Richmond’s Sustainers

know how to have a good

time together and enjoy

social programs, such as

book groups and trips. Also,

monthly Dining Divas outings

are a fun way to try new

restaurants and to engage

new Sustainer members. In

September, a Fall Sustainer

Luncheon is held where

League friendships are

renewed and annual program

plans are shared.

Sustainers also enjoy meeting

sustaining members from other

Leagues who have recently

relocated to the Richmond

area. They plan activities

that allow members to get to

know each other while

exploring the Richmond

community. They have been

on canal boat rides, museum

outings, and dined at local

restaurants. Additionally, a fall

and a spring cocktail party is

held at the Mayo Carter House.

Sustainers are a valuable

source of support and

inspiration to the League as

a whole. They frequently

attend General Membership

Meetings and JLR events,

demonstrating their support

of Active members and the

League mission. Sustainers

also provide historical input

and expereince on important

decisions that help drive the

League’s direction and

mission. Sustainers are also

represented on the Board of

Directors, and serve on the

League’s Property, Finance

Strategic, and Investment

Committees.

As one can see, Sustainers

stay involved and engaged

in League programs and

operations. Just one more

reason why the Junior League

of Richmond is a strong and

vital force within the

community and remains a

vital training tool to its

membership.

Active members can look

forward to being a part of a

life long commitment to the

League, and the good work

that Sustainers continue to

do makes a valuable

difference in our community.

Sustainers helped to welcome Toni Freeman, AJLI President, to Richmond in September with a luncheon at Mayo Carter House.

Sustainers volunteer their time to serve as drivers for authors in town during the annual Book & Author Event.

Page 12: Junior League of Richmond FY14 Annual Report

Over 3,200 attendees came out to Richmond International Raceway for the 8th Annual Touch a Truck on October 5, 2013. We are amazed year after year by the generous support of Liesfeld Contractors, Inc. and all of our dedicated sponsors. We’re thrilled by Touch a Truck’s growing attendance, making it one of Richmond’s premier family events! This unique and interactive day allows children to see, touch, and safely explore their favorite big trucks and heavy machinery, as well as to meet the personnel who protect, serve, and build the Richmond community. Net proceeds of more than $35,000 were raised for the JLR’s training and community programs. Additionally, members of the League and our community donated nearly $700 to the Classroom Sponsorship campaign, which provides underserved children and their families participating in the JLR’s community programs with complimentary admission. Over 100 children and family members from Peter Paul Development Center, Southside Child Development Center, and Woodville Elementary School redeemed sponsored tickets and enjoyed the day of fun and learning.

This year the JLR welcomed seven nationally-acclaimed authors to the 69th Book & Author Event, including Corban Addison, Lolis Eric Elie, Dan Harris, Daniel Jones, and James Swanson. Athough Carol Wall’s health prevented her from attending, we were treated to her story through husband, Richard Wall. While in Richmond, the authors met with media, visited a variety of schools, and attended the Luncheon at the Country Club of Virginia and Dinner at the Greater Richmond Convention Center. New this year was the opportunity to work with Richmond Promise Neighborhood and Healthy U 7th District Health and Wellness Initiative to organize a program for families in the East End to meet cookbook author and chef Lolis Elie. Elie shared his love for maintaining old recipes and community traditions and provided a tasting of his red beans and rice recipe from cookbook, Treme. We are grateful for Dominion Resources’ continued Presenting Sponsorship and for all of the support that generated $49,000 in net proceeds for the JLR’s mission.
