Essays/Poetry Should be written on theme - “Spirit of the Catholic Church”

Guidelines regarding essays should be adhered to carefully. Deadline for submitting

essays is May 31, 2018. Word minimums and maximums for essays should be adhered

to accordingly: ages 7-9 (50 to 100 words); ages 10-12 (100 to 150 words); ages 13-15

(150 – 200 words); and ages 16-18 (250 to 300 words). Poetry should reflect the Theme:

“Spirit of the Catholic Church”

Theme for 2020 Contest / All entries for the Theme must show art with the

wording. ALL entries should all be set up in the designated rooms 8:00 -8:30 PM on

Friday June 15, 2018.

Arts and Crafts/Science

They will be judged in age groups of (7-9), (10-12), (13-15) and (16-18). Categories

will be painting / drawing, sculpture and crafts Entries must be based upon the

conference theme “Spirit of the Catholic Church” Name, age, branch/court number

should be legibly printed on an index card. At the conference, each entry will be

assigned a competition number. Science Fair projects-please adhere to the rules.

ALL entries should all be set up in the designated rooms beween 8:00-8:30pm on

Friday June 15, 2018.

1. No Junior may enter more that one science project.

2. The project must be current work of the Junior registered for the competition.

3. The name of the Junior MUST APPEAR only on the back of the project with the Junior’s

Branch/Court name, number, and their hotel room #.

4. Juniors MUST DEMONSTRATE to the judges, through written reports, pictures, charts, graphs, diagrams,

that the research was accomplished. Juniors will not be present during judging.

5. No commercial models or kits will be allowed as exhibits.

6. No live animals, preserved animals, dangerous chemicals or equipment, cell cultures, and microorganisms

may be exhibited at the competition. Pictures of research previously done may be used on the display.

7. All projects will be judged on Scientific thought, Creative Ability, Clarity, Experimental Design,

Understanding, Dramatic Value, and Technical Skill.

1. The test will be (10) minutes in duration.

2. There will be a total of (25) twenty five problems which will also include word problems. Participants are to

solve the problems in the order in which they appear. Problems skipped will be considered incorrect and all

problems there after will not be counted. If a Junior is in the process of writing an answer when time is called,

the problem immediately prior to this will be considered the last problem attempted.

3. ALL PROBELMS ARE TO BE SOLVED MENTALLY. Any indications that a Junior has violated this rule

will result in disqualification of that Junior.

· Participants must use a pencil without an eraser. Pencils will be provided.

· No erasures or marks of any kind can be placed on the test paper. This includes tally marks and

regrouping marks. NO CALCULATORS.

4. A figure will be considered illegible or a mark over and the answer ruled incorrect if two graders agree that

the answer is illegible or a mark over.

5. Participants may not wear watches during the test. Official time will be kept by the time keeper.

6. Fractions may be expressed as either mixed numbers or improper fractions.

· All fractions must be reduced to the lowest term (simplified) which is defined as numerator or

denominator having no factors greater than one in common.

· Any number which can be written as a whole number must be written as a

whole number and not a fraction.

· The word “and” will not be allowed in writing whole numbers. For example

words must be written one hundred nine – not one hundred and nine.

· Use of commas in writing numerals is optional. However, misplaced commas

will be considered incorrect.

· Use of hyphens in writing word names is optional.

7. Zeros behind a decimal point or in the ones place of a decimal number will be accepted as correct, but zeros

leading a whole number will be considered incorrect. To write a word name for decimal, contestants will not

be allowed to use “point” and the names of the digits.

8. Money amounts must be written as dollars and cents, a whole number of cents. Answer labels will indicate

the form expected, $______ means the answer is given in dollars, and cents ______c means the answer is given

in cents.

9. Metric measurements must be written as decimal numerals. Common fractions are not used in writing metric

measurements.

10. To break a tie, the number of consecutive correct answers beginning with problem one (1) will be counted.

11. Tie breaker #2 will proceed with the number of consecutive correct answers beginning with the next correct

answer.

Each Branch and Court are allowed (4) contestants in each age group. The Spelling Bee words have been selected from words that are Age / Grade Appropriate. 1. Words will be pronounced according to diacritical markings in the Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary 10th Edition 2. PRONUNCIATION – If a word has two or more acceptable pronunciations, both pronunciations will be given by pronouncer. 3. Contestants are allowed to pronounce the word once before spelling it. 4. A contestant may request the pronouncer to repeat the word or use it in a sentence before beginning to spell the word. 5. Judges may disqualify any contestant who ignores a request to start spelling. 6. A contestant may start over only once when spelling a word. 7. Upon missing the spelling of a word, the contestant is eliminated from the contest. The next word on the pronouncer’s list is given to the next contestant. 8. TIE BREAKER – When the contestants are reduced to two, each are called a word on the pronouncer's list. If the competition utilizes all of the regular words, it moves to the tie breaker list. A coin toss will determine the 1st speller. If the word is spelled correctly, that speller is the winner. If the word is misspelled, the 2nd speller has the opportunity to spell. If correct, that speller is the winner. However, if both spellers miss the word, the pronouncer is to continue until a winner is determined. Protest Questions relating to the spelling of a word should be referred to the judge immediately. A contestant should file a protest before receiving the next words. Any protest after a word has been given to the speller or another speller will not be accepted.

THE JUDGES DECISION SHALL BE FINAL ON ALL QUESTIONS.

I. Piece must depict conference theme:

Theme – “Spirit of the Catholic Church”

II. Judging shall include the following: A. Originality of piece. B. Clarity of piece. C. Neatness III. On the day of judging (Sat. June 16, 2018): A. Piece must be in designated area between 9:30am – 11:00am B. A completed registration card must be filled out at conference. C. NO JUNIOR NAME OR BRANCH/COURT NAME SHOULD APPEAR ANYWHERE ON PIECE. Each submission shall be assigned a competition number at the conference. IV. Piece may be arts or crafts, and paintings or sculptures. V. Both competitions (Arts/Crafts and Paintings/Sculptures) will award a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winner in age groups 7-9, 10-12, 13-15 and 16-18.

DEBATE TOPIC: Should children with disabilities be in a different classroom setting?

(Affirmative = Yes, they should; Negative = No, they should not.)

1. Each branch/court may enter only one 4-member team, (Teams can be mixed- 2 Jr. Daughters or 2 Jr. Knights or all the same members) each member must speak Points will be taken away if the entire group does not participate. Other members can be used for research or speech preparation

2. The name of your team must be submitted by May 31, 2018. 3. All times must be followed as stated below, or the team could be disqualified: 4. Definition of Events Presentation of Position – Statements of facts relative to the affirmative or negative position that you are speaking on. Cross Examination – Questions regarding statements made by opposite team members. Opposite Team member should respond to question with a brief answer. Rebuttal –Team members give further clarification regarding questions which were asked or statements made by the opposing team. Closing Statement – Team Members summarize their position. 5. Order of Debate

9. No team or team member will be allowed to sit in during another debate team's performance, until the final round.

10. Brackets for the debate tournament will be made available, prior to the start of the conference. Team placing will be determined by the pulling of a number. Therefore, all teams must be present at least 15 minutes prior to the start of the tournament. 11. Each team should be prepared to debate, upon completion of bracket placement. NO team will

be allowed to alter their debate time, due to a lack of preparation. 12. Debating on pros/cons and affirmative/negative will be determined by the flipping of a coin.

Banners must illustrate the Conference Theme: “Spirit of the Catholic Church” shall be only one

banner entry from a Junior Branch or Junior Court. You can enter a joint Banner as Branch and Court.

The Banner can be made of any type of material that measures 18 inches in height and 30 inches wide. You

will be responsible for setting up your banner display.
