7th & 8th Grade: Next week, the 7th and 8th grade will get to demonstrate the

knowledge they have gained through working hard all year long on mastering our

state standards by participating in the PARCC Assessment. We have gained some

experience with practice assessments, identified areas that have proved challenging,

and learned strategies that can help each student best showcase their skills. Now, we

are ready to show how much we have grown this year and rock the PARCC!

7th Grade: In between testing, students will continue reading and discussing To Kill

a Mockingbird. Next week, we will focus on how character development and setting

impacts the plot of the novel (RL 7.3).

8th Grade: In between testing, students will begin a research unit. Students will

establish a topic of particular interest and engage in pre-writing and research

activities (W 8.7).

A brief overview: Many parents have been wondering “What exactly IS the

PARCC Assessment?” First and foremost, I feel very confident that if any of my

fifth grade students were asked this question, they could answer with complete

confidence. The PARCC is not something scary—and not something to be afraid

of. In fact, it is a wonderful time of year in which the students are able to

showcase their hard work by meeting and exceeding the expectations of the 5th

grade standards. That’s it! All year long students engage in activities that cover

the 5th grade learning standards that not only prepare them for 6th grade, but

the academic rigor helps them tackle tasks that require them to think critically

to problem solve. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to

contact me. I would be happy to help you see the multitude of benefits the 5th

grade standards bring to everyday instruction! :)

5th Grade Literature: Next week, the students will begin PARCC testing for

ELA. In between testing, they will participate in reviewing concepts such as

narrator’s point of view, figurative language, characters, and summary.

5th Grade Math: Next week the students will have a final review over each

math domain. Individualized instruction allows for students to practice the

standards they need to most help in. It also provides students of varying abilities

to put their skills to work at a level that meets their needs. ANY practice on

Study Island would be greatly beneficial.

Important: Please make sure that all students have a pair of

headphones by Monday. They will need them for the listening

component of the PARCC assessment. Thank you!

MR. GLYNN’S SOCIAL STUDIES SCOOP

5th: Students will be comparing and contrasting the treatment of slaves in the

South and the treatment of factory workers in the North (RI.5.3). We will be

reading excerpts from The Jungle, and we will look into the development of

labor unions.

6th: The students will have a quiz on Monday over the Middles Ages. Your

child should have a study guide to use. We will then start our unit on the

Renaissance. The students will complete a web quest as an introduction

(RI.6.9). We will then start working in stations to learn about important people

and ideas of the Renaissance.

7th: We will be wrapping up our unit on the colonization of America. We will

have a quiz on Wednesday. We made a few changes this week, so the quiz was

pushed back. Students will be getting a study guide on Monday. We will then

start studying the causes of the American Revolution (RI.7.3).

8th: We will start discussing battles on the western front of World War II. With

PARCC testing getting started, I want to give the students an option on how

they want to learn about these battles and what areas they would like to focus

on. They will be required to determine an author's point of view or purpose in a

text and analyze how the author acknowledges and responds to conflicting

evidence or viewpoints (RI.8.6)

Student Council

6th grade: In between PARCC testing, students will be reviewing previous

standards. They will primarily be focusing on ratios and proportions this week.

There is a possible quiz/assessment this week.

Study Island– Any concepts covered so far!

7th grade: In between PARCC testing, students will be able to identify

cross-sections created from 3-D figures. We will also be reviewing all standards

with PARCC practice as well. There is a possible quiz/assessment this week.

(7.G.3)

Study Island– Scale Drawings, Two-Dimensional Shapes, and Three-

dimensional shapes (Any concepts covered so far!)

8th grade: In between PARCC testing, students will be finishing up solving

systems of linear equations using different strategies. There is a possible

assessment this week. (8.EE.8)

Study Island– Solutions to linear equations, Solving linear equations, Systems

of linear equations, Linear Relationships, Describe Functions, Understanding

Functions, and Compare Functions (Any concepts covered so far!)

Algebra: In between PARCC testing, students will be learning about rational

equations in Chapter 11. After this chapter is completed, we will be moving on to

semester review. There is a possible quiz/assessment this week.
