Joseph “Mayo” Ashley passed away this spring at the age of 81. A graduate of Custer County High School, he attended Miles Com-munity College and graduated from the University of Montana.

After his time in Missoula, Ashley was a journalist for the Miles City Star and moved on to become the Sports Editor of the Great Falls Tribune from 1967-1973. He was twice named Sportswriter

of the Year in Montana (1972 and 1973).

Returning to U of M, Ashley moved from the sports desk to practice a career in law. He started with the Department of Labor & Industry before being appointed Deputy Attorney General. He maintained a private practice for over 40 years, working until his passing in March. In addition to his pro-fessional careers, he served for 12 years in the Navy Reserve.

Ashley brought his editorial background to the Montana State Golf Association, writing the newsletter and eventually being inducted in 1997 to the MSGA Hall of Fame for his contributions to the game.

Passionate about sports, he was particularly fond of golf. Along with his wife, Joan, he was a mainstay on the links at Green Meadow Country Club. WE NEED YOUR HELP!Hosting a JAC tournament is a considerable cost, and funded entirely by the host team’s association. This summer will be no different. The MSGA will need assistance absorbing this challenging expense.

If you would like to donate toward the cost of the tournament, organize a charity tournament, or volunteer your services at the event, the MSGA would sincerely appreciate the help! You can contact Jim Opitz at [email protected] for more information. Thanks for your support in helping our juniors!

Highly regarded as both a competitor and student while at Rocky, Clancy graduated with high honors. She earned

recognition as both a first- and second-team all-conference selection. Clancy was named academic all-conference twice, was recipient of the NAIA Character Award two times, and landed on the Dean's List three of her four seasons in Billings. Clancy qualified for the NAIA National Tournament three times with an individual best finish, third in 2016. Clancy accumulated 12 individual tourn-ament titles and two runner-ups and a total of 15 top-five finishes. Clancy was the 2014 Montana State Women’s Amateur Champion.

Applicants are also scored on school and community involvement, as well as academics.

The girls receiving scholarships this year are: Brooklyn Olson (Ronan), Kinsey Irvin (Lewistown), Kaelyn Volk (Sidney), and Tierney Messmer (Sidney).

The MSWGA has been awarding scholarships since 1991, and with the merger to the MSGA, they will also be available for graduating high school boys in 2019.

Carlson, Johnston Claim Lake City Open TitlesNick Dietzen, MSGA Communications Director

The unofficial tournament season in Montana begins with the Lake City Open in Polson, and a familiar prep name was atop the amateur division. Ryggs Johnston of Libby and pro Tyler Carlson each won 2018 Lake City Open Titles.

Johnston, the three-time Montana high school golf champion from Libby, shot rounds of 66-72, 138 (-6) at Polson Bay Golf Course. Johnston’s 138 was four shots clear of second place finisher Logan Lindholm of Kalispell (142).

Johnston’s 138 in the amateur division would have garnered him fourth place overall among the professional golfers, three strokes behind Tyler Carlson, the professional and

overall champion. Carlson, an Oregon State product, won a three-hole playoff against former Carroll College standout Jim Mee of Libby. Both golfers shot a 135 (-9) through two rounds.

Carlson shot a 66 on Sunday to erase a three-stroke deficit after he entered the day tied for fourth place. Roger Wallace of Polson posted 141 (-3) to win the senior professional division. For full results, click here.

Taylor Claims Barnett Memorial TournamentNick Dietzen, MSGA Communications Director

The Barnett Memorial Tournament at Missoula Country Club attracts many of the best tournament golfers from around the Treasure State and has an esteemed list of champions. Hamilton’s Payton Taylor added his name to that list as he won the 2018 edition of the prestigious three-day event annually held over Memorial Weekend.

Taylor was in impressive form to conclude the champion-ship as he made seven birdies to post a final round 64 (-7), winning the three-day Barnett Memorial by four strokes with a total of 205 (-8). Taylor opened with 73, rebounded with 68 before finishing in style with his 64. The Liberty University product’s final round was one stroke off the tournament record and helped him eclipse a six-stroke deficit after day one.

Taylor attributed his first round struggles to unfamiliarity with a mallet putter. His traditional blade putter made it back into the bag for the next two rounds and likely should have a rightful place in the bag going forward. The recent graduate began his final round with three birdies in his first five holes and found himself tied with Great Falls’ Ross Bartell heading into the back nine. He grabbed hold of the lead, thanks to a birdie on hole 11, and added birdies on holes 16 and 17, to wrap up his first Barnett win.

Originally from Florida, Taylor and his family landed in Hamilton just before he entered college at Liberty. After graduating earlier this month, he has taken on his first job, but plans to compete in a few more summer events, like the State Amateur and the Whitefish Fourth of July Tournament.

Bartell finished in second, four strokes behind Taylor, with rounds of 69-70-70, 209 (-4). He was in a three-way tie for first place heading into the final round, but back-to-back bogeys on holes 12 and 13 were too much to overcome. Billings’ Sean Benson was a shot back in third (71-70-69, 210), posting three-under, followed by Missoula native Tom Swan-son and Hamilton’s Craig Hurlbert, who each shot 211 (-2).

Twelve women competed in the ladies flight, with Libby native and former Carroll College standout, Jackie Mee, distancing herself from the field with rounds of 74-80-73, 227. Mee won by nine shots over Katie Willis (79-78-79, 236). For full results, click here.

2018 Prep Golf Season Concludes for Class B & CNick Dietzen, MSGA Communications Director

While springtime took a little longer than usual to arrive, another season of high school golf is in the books as the 2018 Class B and Class C State Tournaments concluded.

In the Class B ranks, Loyola Sacred Heart (Missoula) brought back significant hardware from Eaglerock Golf Course in Billings. The Loyola girls won their first state championship since 2011, led by future University of Montana golfer Kylie Esh. Esh won her second consecutive state title with rounds of 72-71, 143 (-1). Coming in second was teammate Katie Fagg at 155 (78-77). Abbey Aklestad of Shelby was third with 171 (86-85).

Loyola easily grabbed the girls’ team title with a total of 690 (346-344), 43 shots clear of second place Shelby (733). Three Forks was third overall with 762. For Class B girls results, click here.

Shelby got the better of Loyola on the boys’ side with 671 (333-338), edging out the Rams at 673 (341-332). Sweet Grass was not far behind at 680 (344-336) for third place. Individually, Loyola’s Bucky Crippen took home medalist honors with rounds of 73-69, 142 (-2). Peter Brown of Colstrip was second with 74-76, 150. Josh Neth of Manhattan shot 72-79, 151 for third. At Fairmont Hot Springs Resort, it was a sweep of team and individual titles for Manhattan Christian. The Eagles girls repeated as champions with a total of 588 (307-281), 54 shots better than second place Harlowton (317-325, 642). Lone Peak was shot back of Harlowton at 643 (327-316) for third. Jillian Frye paced the Eagles with rounds of 91-87, 178, to take home medalist honors. Landri Pal-adichuk of Ennis was second with 93-90, 183, and Madison Wasson of Harlowton was third with 93-95, 188. For Class C girls results, click here.

Things were closer on the boys’ side, but the Eagles prevailed with a total of 511 (251-260), followed by Park City in second

at 525 (267-258), and Gardiner in third with 531 (269-262). Caidin Hill of Man-hattan Christian provided the sweep of top honors, thanks to rounds of 79-86, 165. JOINT STATEMENT REGARDING GREEN-READING MATERIALS

The R&A and the USGA believe that a player's ability to read greens is an essential part of the skill of putting. Rule 14-3 limits the use of equipment and devices that might assist a player in their play, based on the principle that golf is a challenging game in which success should depend

on the judgment, skills, and abilities of the player.

We are concerned about the rapid development of increasingly detailed materials that players are using to help with reading greens during a round. We are reviewing the use of these materials to assess whether any actions need to be taken to protect this important part of the game.

We expect to address this matter further in the coming months.

As we near the upcoming U.S. Open Championship, we are close to the release of tickets for the 2019 U.S. Open to be held at Pebble Beach Golf Links. Tickets will be available to the public on Monday, June 11.
