I know at our meetings I am doing most the talking, but there are a lot of quiet people who keep our club rolling along. Today I want to thank Donna Schehl who is always taking pictures and making sure they get to those who need them. June Issue

President’s

Corner

What a great meeting we had! It is good to see change can be something positive. I think everyone en-

joyed the new venue. It was roomy, the food was good, we were able to hear and see our guest speakers

and our servers were really nice. I think this will work out very well and our club can grow with the new

space we have.

It is hard to believe half a year has already passed. We have 6 months to go and they are filled with excit-

ing events. Along with the fabulous speakers our VP of Programs, Barb McRoberts, has gotten so far, we

have more to look forward to. In July we have Carlo Luri, Director of Bently Business, who will fill us in

on the projects they have going here in our valley, then in August, Judge Michael Gibbons. Our 9/11

Commemorative Dinner is coming up quickly and will be on a Sunday, Sept. 13, 2015. Please mark your

calendars now so you can save the date.

We are so lucky to live in a place where our representatives make themselves available to come to our

lunches and tell us what is happening in the legislature. Senator James Settelmeyer and Assemblyman Jim

Wheeler were very informative about what got passed and explaining the reasons some bills did not go

through. Miles Ugarkovich, the Northern Nevada Director of the Nevada Firearms Coalition, also spoke

and thanked our speakers. Although all the bills regarding guns did not pass, there have been some that

have. The hard work is not done!!

This year we have a couple of Presidential Candidate forums right here in Douglas County. One will be at

the Corley Ranch (more info will be forthcoming) and one at the Lake in Harvey’s outdoor arena on Au-

gust 22, 2015. Check our website for up to date information on meetings and events, sierranevadarepubli-

canwomen.com.

Many of you met Bruce Bertrum at our June lunch meeting. He will also be at our July meeting and you

may get a chance to talk to him about the honor flight he took in June. Our club and the Douglas County

Republican Women worked together to be able to sponsor a veteran from our valley to go to Washington.

This is such an honor for us and just a small way to say thank you, not just to Bruce, but to all the Viet

Nam veterans.

Please remember to make your reservations for the July 8th luncheon by 10:00 a.m. on July 6th. Our treas-

urer, Jacie, must call in our count to CVI at that time. If you make a reservation

and can’t come PLEASE call by this time and cancel. When you don’t show up

we still have to pay for your lunch. This would be greatly appreciated.

I know at our meetings I am doing most the talking, but there are a lot of quiet

people who keep our club rolling along. Today I want to thank Donna Schehl

who is always taking pictures and making sure they get to those who need them.

I also want to thank Rita Hill who keeps our website up to date on vital issues

and happenings in our club. Both these jobs are important and take considerable

time and effort. Both Donna and Rita have excelled at what they do. Thank you.

Minutes

The regularly scheduled meeting of the Sierra Nevada Republican Women was held on Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at CVI in Min-

den, NV. President Pat Smith called the meeting to order at 12:00 noon. The invocation was given by Chaplain Marie Schnook

Bruce Bertrum who will be our Veteran going on the Viet Nam Honor Flight.

Program: 1st Vice President/Program Barbara McRoberts introduced our speakers. Senator James Settlemeyer was first to give a

wrap up of the bills from the Senate side of the Legislature. He talked about all the good items passed such as Uber, some gun laws,

and a few education items such as vouchers for school choice. Our next speaker was Assemblyman Jim Wheeler who spoke about

tort reform for construction defects. They both took questions. There will be an effort to stop the commerce tax NV80.com. He

said the service tax starts with the gathering of all kinds of data.

Miles Ugarkovich of the Nevada Firearms Coalition also spoke. He thanked both Senator Settelmeyer and Assemblyman Wheeler

for their work on gun issues.

The parliamentarian for the meeting was Nancy Jarvis.

which was delicious. It will be easier for everyone to hear and see the speakers at the CVI.

Recommended Reading Mary Porter, the Constitution Committee

During the summer months you may want to recommend a book to a high school

student or high school graduate like my granddaughter, Candice Martorano. She is a

recent graduate of Agoura High School in Southern California. I asked Candice to

recommend a political book, and she recommended Persepolis, The Story of a

Childhood, Pantheon Books, by Marjane Satrapi. This book is actually part of a two

volume set originally written in French.

In Persepolis the author uses black and white comic strip images to describe her life

from ages 6 to 14 in Teheran during and after the Iranian Revolution and the Iran-Iraq

war. Each page contains drawings that provide a picture of what the author is

conveying in words. The reader will see daily life in Iran at that time with all of the

violence and difficulties, and also realize the author’s pride in her county’s history which

is in conflict with the demands of the Islamic regime.

Below is a photo of Candice Martorano, probably our youngest SNRW member, holding

her drawing of the Dangberg Ranch. She prepared the drawing for the cover of the

program for DCRCC’s first annual Heritage Event held at the Dangberg Ranch in 2013.

Perhaps you have a granddaughter who would like to join SNRW also. Have a conver-

sation with that granddaughter, and pick up a membership application from Nancy

Brisack. It is imperative that young women take an interest in political affairs. They also

may provide some interesting, thought provoking reading recommendations.

Went to a viewing a couple of years ago and the veteran was laying there with a stack of letters in his

hands. I asked his widow if those were "Mail Call" letters from his Honor Flight trip. She said indeed they

were. She went on to say, "He read those letters and cards EVERY day." It only seemed fitting that they

accompanied him to his final resting place. I've seen veterans buried with their Honor Flight name tags

and a few buried in their Honor Flight tee shirts. This program touches veterans and their families in ways

most of us still can't fully comprehend. Thank you Honor Flight Nevada for rewriting the last chapter of Mr.

Gerard's life.
