Contents ViewpointCanon Patrick Foreman reflects on"This is our song."Shakespeare wrote in Twelfth Night'If music be the food of love, play on.'It's surprising how much music andcertain songs or tunes mean so muchto each one of us. They tell me thatstudents who study with music in thebackground, can often remember themusic that was being played whenthey come to recall the informationduring an exam. Many couples who come to churchto get married often want theirfavourite piece of music or songplayed whilst they are signing theregisters. At funerals loved ones askfor the deceased's favourite piece ofmusic to be played either coming inor going out at the Crematorium orchurch. I think this is right andproper, because we want theseoccasions to really reflect the life ofthe people we are celebrating, andwhat motivated them. When my wife and I started courting55 years ago, she introduced me toElvis Presley, Shirley Bassey and GenePitney. I suppose if we had a specialsong from these artists we wouldchoose "I love you more today" byGene Pitney. I introduced her toJohnny Mathis, The Spinners, TheSpringfield's and Jim Reeves. It isgood that we each have differenttastes to different types of music. We both like certain composers inthe classical realm, but both tend toget up and turn stuff off it's too muchin a minor key and depressing. In my early Christian life, TheFisherfolk were instrumental withtheir gentle folk music approach toworship, which came over as verysincere, and took you into thepresence of God in a way I had neverexperienced before. Others wereSheila Walsh, Amy Grant and MichaelCard. However, one of my favouritehymns, although to my knowledge,we've never sung it in FakenhamChurch is: "I stand amazed in the

presence of Jesus the Nazarene"which was written in the early 1900's.Sometimes this hymn is known as"My Saviours Love." There are onlyfive verses in this song, and theyreflect on the passion story of Jesusand what He has done for each one ofus, with a short refrain at the end ofeach verse which goes like this: "Howmarvellous! How wonderful! And mysong shall ever be: how marvellous! How wonderful is my Saviour's lovefor me." By the way, this is just oneof the many hymns I want sung at myfuneral!I can't finish this reflection withoutquoting the words from a refrain ofanother hymn that we've sung onceor twice in Fakenham and that is onethat was written in the late 1800's,and is often sung on Songs of Praiseon BBC1, it is "Blessed assurance,Jesus is mine" and one line of therefrain goes "This is my story, this ismy song, praising my Saviour all theday long." This is my prayer for eachone us. Amen.

Yours in His peace and love, Patrick.

Parish Prayers for JuneDaily prayers are said for Fakenham, its people and organisationsDuring the weeks in June we will be specifically praying for:

Church choirs run in my family. My father was achorister all his life and I joined my first churchchoir at the age of thirteen. We had an excellentorganist who encouraged my love of singing andgave me many opportunities, so I went to a well-known teacher in Manchester and later to musiccollege. Whilst at college I became a member of a smallgroup based at Bolton Parish Church. One memberof the group was Senior Curate at the church, and Isoon found myself a member of the church choir. For over twenty years I sang the most beautifulchurch music and made life-long friends. In 1995 my husband and I moved to Walsinghamwhich we had visited many times as pilgrims. I wasconfident that I would still be able to use my voicein church, but this proved impossible. Eventually Iended up at the Catholic Shrine, where I still singregularly. I was stewarding at the Christmas Tree Festival in2015 when I caught sight of the church music list inthe porch. Many of the anthems I had sung inBolton were there, and I couldn't wait to join thechoir, where I soon felt at home, thanks to theother choir members.

I thank God for the opportunities to use my voicefor Him, and for the wonderful people I have metalong the way. A friend of mine, researching for abook he was writing, came across a gravestone withthe inscription "A Chorister who has joined theHeavenly Choir." I hope to be singing for anotheryear or two, and I'm not going to have agravestone, but I'd like that to be my memorial.

Mary, a member of the church choir.

Saint Cecilia is the patron saint of music and herfeast day (special day) is 22ⁿd November. Here is ashort prayer to use.

Dear Saint Cecilia, may you inspire musicians togladden the hearts of people by filling the air withGod’s gift of music and reminding them of theDivine Musician who created all beauty. Amen.

TOWN TALKTown TalkThe deaths earlier this year of IanScott and Alan Childs took me back toformer times when they both livedand worked in Fakenham. I got toknow Ian and his wife Janice on anumber of levels, initially throughteaching their children at the Highschool. Church was anotherconnecting point and also theirsupport for the charity Action Aid. Forsome years Ian was a town councillorand had been very proud to take onthe role of mayor. As a local reportersitting in on council meetings therewere inevitable chats with him about'goings-on' in the local community.Another link was the parish magazineyou are now reading. It had been inneed of improvement for some timeas a more imposing presence in thetown and many were the meetings inthe Scott household to bring thisabout. Church also put me in touchwith Alan whose writing andphotography pursuits produced anumber of outstanding publications, some of which I reviewed for the LynnNews. He and his wife Sarah lived inthe amazing Red House on NelsonRoad which reputedly hadassociations with Oliver Cromwell.Party gatherings there were not to bemissed. An abiding memory of Alanwas as the producer of a spectacular'sound and light' show in the parishchurch, a potted history of Fakenhamand Hempton from the medievalperiod through to the post-war era. This featured a big cast of local actorsand singers - for some reason my rolewas to herald, on a big screen, themore than a dozen pubs which usedto supply the town - and ran topacked audiences over three nights. Those were the days.....

Christmas Tree FestivalnewsAs you read this, the closing datefor charities to apply for a tree inthe 2018 Christmas Tree Festivalhas passed. As I write it, thereare still almost 3 weeks to go.We already have almost 40applications, and a number of'regulars' have not yet returnedtheir forms, although they haveassured us that they will! We aretherefore confident that 2018will be at least as successful andenjoyable as 2017.That success is, as always, dependant on the support that isalways given by hours ofvolunteering during during thefestival and the generosity ofdonations in advance. It is a bittoo soon to ask for cakes! However, work has alreadystarted to gather and organiseprizes for the raffle and tombola.Over 1000 prizes are needed, andthe team would welcomedonations from now onward. They can be brought to theChristmas Tree Festival desk inchurch between 11.00 and 12.00any Thursday morning.Thank you in advance.

Peregrine 'Full house' atNorwich CathedralAfter a shaky start to herbreeding career last year, withonly one chick hatched from foureggs, this year has proved moresuccessful so far for the NorwichCathedral Peregrines. Four eggswere laid between 24th and 31stMarch, with incubation startingwhen the third egg was laid on29th March. The female, widelyknown as 'GA' due to the letterson her colour ring, appears tohave cracked one of the eggswith her talons during incubationand on 7th April this non-viableegg was consumed by 'GA'allowing her to regain some ofthe huge amount of nutrients sheinvested in laying the eggs. Thethree remaining eggs all hatchedsuccessfully, each one a dayapart on 3rd, 4th and 5th of May. From the end of March to Julythe Hawk and Owl Trust run aWatchpoint in the NorwichCathedral Close, whereeverybody is welcome to comeand have a look at the nestingplatform, and look at the birds. There is still at least 35-40 daysbefore the chicks fledge (leavethe nest) and a lot can happen inthat time.

How did you come to be a policeofficer? - I used to help with the SOSbus in Norwich, doing two or threeshifts at the weekends. The bus isoperated by Open Youth Trust and isthere to help young people in thenightclub district who may get intodifficulty. I saw the police at firsthand and so I became a SpecialConstable. Four years later I appliedto join the regular force and becamea Police Officer in 2012.What was your previous job? - I usedto sell mobile phones, but they'vechanged so much, I'm not an expertanymore! Was police work what youexpected? - Initially, being a Specialwas a real eye-opener. If you thinkpolice dramas are exaggerated, they're not! I dealt with threesudden deaths in my first week in theregular force. The TV incidents areregular occurrences. What is your patch? The towns areFakenham, Wells and Holt but it is atriangular area from Guist in thesouth, west up through Raynham, across to Salthouse and back again. What is the balance of your workbetween on foot and in the car? - Iaim to be on the beat for some timeevery day. It is important for thepublic to see the police around, bothto combat crime and the fear ofcrime. But we are also responsive toincidents. Yesterday I attended aroad traffic accident in the morningand an incident involving a personwith a mental health problem in theafternoon. Preserving life is our firstpriority. How were you inducted into work inFakenham? - The recruitment andtraining process is very intensive andthere is a lot of training in the law.But on the job you learn theapplication of the law in practice. When I came to Fakenham, I wastutored for three months by a moresenior officer who accompanied me

to every incident and who knew thearea well.Have you had any tricky moments? -Yes, several. I've seen many deaths ina variety of circumstances. You haveto be resilient and you do becomehardened to it, but never hard.In your view, what makes a goodpolice officer? - You need a fairamount of patience, empathy andability to put yourself in the otherperson's shoes. You need to be a bitof a counsellor, social worker, offermarriage guidance and a lot ofcommon sense. You have to be fairand balanced and understandpeople's needs. It's a hugeresponsibility. You have to be able tounwind and have a good supportnetwork. In your spare time? - I like to keepmy fitness up by running. I am intosci-fi novels at the moment. I enjoytinkering with our family cars and mymotor bike. I play with my 11yr oldson on the computer. The biggest decision you've made onthe spur of the moment? - My wifeand I were looking to buy a newhouse and we saw one online at9.30pm one day, viewed it at 8.30amthe next and immediately afterseeing it we bought it! No regretseither! What's been your greatestchallenge? - Joining the police as aregular officer. Even though I was aSpecial, the recruitment process ismore involved.Have you been grateful for thekindness of a stranger? - I frequentlyget help from members of the publicand they are very supportive of thepolice. We couldn't do our jobswithout the help of the public. How would your family describeyou? - My wife would say I had asarcastic sense of humour and that Iam a family oriented person and adecent husband. Hopefully my sonwould say I am the best Dad in theworld. I say hopefully!

Your impulse buy? - Milk chocolatedigestives. What makes you happy? - To do adecent job every day. Peace andquiet. Going away for a few days inour caravan. What's your favourite food? - I like atakeaway curry, especially chickenmadras. What would you say to your 18 yearold self? - Listen to your elders. Theyreally do know better!Who has been a great influence inyour life? - My Mum. She worked sohard in two jobs to keep our familygoing. I learnt my work ethic fromher. And PC David Rathband. He wasshot and blinded by the gunman,Raoul Moat. He later ran themarathon as a blind person in aid ofthe charity he set up, The Blue LampFoundation, which assists thefamilies of police, ambulance or firepersonnel who have been injured onduty.Your luxury on a desert island? - Anendless supply of food, Wi-Fi, applejuice and a bit of shade as I'm notgood in the sun.Your ideal weekend? - A park runwith my family, the cinema in theafternoon, a takeaway curry in theevening, a roast on Sunday and a visitto Mum in between.

This month's photograph from the Archive shows abig group of Fakenham people proclaiming not just,'this is our song' but also "this is our town". In2008 a team came together in church with the planof creating a show telling the history of Fakenham, based on the French model of portraying the storyof a place in sound and light. Using a script byGeorge Middleton, Grant Harrison as director, AlanChilds as producer and with the help of an awardfrom the Big Lottey Fund, a very mixed cast of localpeople met in church to rehearse Son Et Lumiere. The musical was performed to big audiences inOctober 2009 and the picture shows the finale, which was the whole cast's rendition of There'llAlways Be A Fakenham. The three narrators in thecentre are Tony George, Lucy Ferris and RobinHawkes.

It would seem that there are lotsof hares to be spotted in Norwichand throughout Norfolk thiscoming summer. I followed a newstrail to discover that the projectwas about children's charityBreak, celebrating 50 years oftheir work with children.

So I went to meet Liz Richards andHelen Vinsen from Break whokindly spoke to me about thisexciting project. They explainedthat the hare project, known asGoGoHares begins on 24th Juneand runs to 8th September. Therewill be a city trail of 50 hares andfurther county trails of 18 hares.

One has been sponsored byKinnerton's chocolate factory andwill be sited in Fakenham.

Liz and Helen told me that theNorfolk based charity Break hasbeen changing young lives acrossEast Anglia for 50 Years. Break

believes every child and youngperson needs a home where theyfeel safe and loved, so they cangrow in confidence and look to thefuture with hope. Workingtirelessly to help young people incare, children with disabilities, children at risk and families whoneed support finding a waythrough difficult times andopening the door to a brightertomorrow.

**************

So back to the hare trails. How canwe find more details about them?On the 24th June 50 hares will beplaced in Norwich and a further18 will be located around Norfolk. These hares form the city andcounty trails, each with its ownunique prize.

I understand the trail can befollowed, using the map which isavailable during that week fromthe tourist information in Norwichand various tourist spots aroundthe county.

The main hares will leave Norwichon 8th September, before they allappear in the city centre on 7thOctober ready for 4 days of anevent - Hare Today Gone

Tomorrow! 50 of the hares will goto auction on 11th October.Hares themselves have a certainmystique about them, inspiringpoets and artists. Here is a strikingimage of one by local Fakenhamartist Debbie Osborn.

And to finish, a poem by Walter dela Mare.

In the black furrow of a fieldI saw an old witch-hare this night; And she cocked a lissom ear,And she eyed the moon so bright,And she nibbled o' the green; And I whispered 'Whsst! witch-hare,'Away like a ghostie o'er the fieldShe fled, and left the moonlightthere.

At a Confirmation Servicethe Bishop prays that the Holy Spirit will confirm the candidates in their faith just as, in the gospel of John, the risen Jesus says to his disciples "Receive the Holy Spirit" (John 20 verse 22).
