Man stabbed, woman arrested

A 27-year-old woman is facing charges following the stabbing of a 25-year-old man.

The incident occurred Saturday, around 11:45 p.m., in the townhouse complex at 300 Robron Rd.

The male victim suffered a stab wound in the upper body area and was taken to Campbell River hospital where he was treated and released.

The suspect’s

name has not been released. RCMP say they are recommending she be charged with assault with a weapon.

Vehicle torchedOn June 17, at

9:50 a.m., police were notified of a vehicle on fire in the area of Snowden Road and Iron River Main.

The vehicle was totally destroyed and all its identifying markers had been removed. Police continue to investigate who

owns the vehicle and the cause of the fire.

Business B&E and theft

On June 14, at 5:52 a.m., Mounties investigated a break-in at the UPS store located at Campbell River Common mall.

The culprit used a rock to smash the front glass window, entered and stole an undisclosed amount of property.

On June 16, two outboard motors were stolen from a residence in the 1900 block of Galerno Rd.

The motors, a 9.9 horsepower Yamaha and a 9.9 horsepower Mercury, were removed from two separate boats at the same residence.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police.

Boat in troubleA boat with

mechanical difficulties was towed to safety on Sunday morning.

Police received several reports of the boat “in distress,” 100 metres off shore from Discovery Pier.

A dangerous tree was removed from the Campbell River on Friday by volunteers, including a group of boys who were trapped under the maple during a tubing trip on June 12. Pictured clockwise from the top of the page: Steve Harding de-limbs the tree; Jamie Turko reaches for a rope; Todd French, the hero, takes a break in the sunshine; and six of the boys pull together to remove a large limb from the water. From front to back are Tyler Scorgie, Blaine Olney, Landon Walters, Hayden Arbour, Bailey Boschman and Ryan Chickite.

Five days earlier, six young friends fought for survival after being swept under a fallen tree in the fast-moving Campbell River.

A few of the boys could have easily drowned after their tubing trip went horri-bly wrong on the after-

noon of June 12.But now they were

back, trying to conquer their own fears and doing much more to rid the river of a fallen maple tree.

“It’s nerve-racking getting back to this spot. It’s bringing back the memories and it’s got my heart pump-ing,” admits 16-year-old Blaine Olney.

Tyler Scorgie, 16, sums up his gut feeling in two words, “Pretty sketchy.”

Nevertheless, they were back on Friday, by the water’s edge, lending their muscle to the day-long task of cutting and hauling the dangerous tree from the north side of the river, a few hundred metres downstream of

the John Hart Generat-ing Station.

“I think this is a good idea and it’s pretty fun, but it is a little scary next to the water,” says Bailey Boschman.

Joining them were buddies Ryan Chickite, Landon Walters and the soft-spoken Todd F rench, who was acknowledged as the hero of the group after his calm instructions helped the boys free themselves during the terrifying ordeal.

Tagging along with the group was their friend Hayden Arbour as the seven teens worked alongside vol-unteers from Camp-

bell River Search and Rescue, Jamie Turko, Keith Grier and George May, along with Steve Harding of Timber-wolf Tree Service.

“This is worse than climbing trees!” quips Harding, just after climbing out on the fallen tree, over the moving water, and cut-ting branches with his chainsaw.

Harding, a former long-time member of search and rescue, wasn’t paid a dime for his work – “just free pizza” – but knew someone had to vol-unteer to get rid of the maple which came down during a winter storm mudslide.

“It’s pretty crucial

to get this out of here b e fo re s o m e t h i n g tragic happens,” he says.

Two weeks earlier, Turko, who also works as a river rafting guide, predicted the fallen tree would pose a risk to tubers and snorkel-ers.

And just two days after his warning story appeared in local news-papers, the six boys went tubing and got caught in the tree.

“The lifejackets saved us for sure,” notes Wal-ters.

Slowly and methodi-cally, the fallen tree – known as a “strainer” – is de-limbed and cut down into chunks. Turko’s wearing a wet-

suit and climbs into the cold water to tie a line around the pieces and then the seven teens pull together on the rope to haul the limbs and trunk onto the muddy bank.

“It’s a relief to see it gone,” says Olney.

But danger remains just below the surface. In the middle of the river lies a root wad that is lodged and can-not be freed or hauled out.

“There’s still a major hazard here,” warns Turko. “The current is way too fast. Hope-fully when the water goes down to summer flows we can get at it, but there’s nothing we can do today.”

Our WaterLeaders:

People Like You

There are many water conservation leaders in the City. They are the people who not only follow recommendations for water conservation, but add some creative touches of their own. Many people are proud to show off their water-

saving ideas in their lawns and gardens or share their ideas at public events. It’s great to see that conserving water doesn’t have to cost a fortune in new appliances. Some of the great ideas include:• Water lawns once a week or less• Collect water from washing vegetables and fruit

to water outdoor plants• Collect water when waiting for hot or cold water

and use to fl ush toilet, or water plants• Collect water from household or garden shed

roofs in rain barrels or buckets and watering vegetable beds

• Mulch• Use micro or drip irrigation systems• Use a broom instead of a hose to clean

driveway. Water conservation doesn’t mean doing without: It means becoming effi cient with what you have. If you have an idea to share, talk to the Water Cyclers when you see them this summer. Or send your ideas to the water hotline (contact info below). Average water use triples in summer time and most of this increase is due to ineffi cient lawn watering. Increased use at peak periods compromises City of CR fi re-fi ghting ability and increases operating and capital costs. For information on why water conservation is necessary in the City of Campbell River, and for ways to use water effi ciently visit the CCR website, call or e-mail the water hotline: 250-203-2316, [email protected].

The city will not install a webcam as council decided the price was too high.

The camera, which was intended to stream live video through the city’s website 24/7, would have cost the city a one-time $2,300 pur-chasing and instal-lation fee and then another $900 annually to cover the cost of the Internet Service Provider.

At the May 31 council meeting, Coun. Ryan Mennie said he liked the idea of providing Internet users with community access but felt the city’s partners such as Rivercorp and Campbell River Tour-ism should help foot the bill.

But at last week’s

m e e t i n g , Wa r re n Kalyn, the city’s man-ager of information services, told council no one was biting.

“There’s been no response to agency request for cost shar-ing on web camera installation and oper-ational expenses,” said Kalyn.

He also looked at two existing webcams already in the city, as a potentially cheaper option, but again with no luck.

A camera at Marine Harvest Canada is not operational, with just a single static image displayed and similarly, the web-cam mounted at the Maritime Heritage Centre is not being used; Kalyn said he received no response to his queries about why that is the case.

Kalyn’s recommen-

dation to council to purchase and install a webcam fell off the table after none of the councillors voted in favour of the pro-posal.

If it had gone ahead, the city webcam likely would have been perched on the roof of City Hall or the Fish-erman’s Wharf and would have been used to attract tourists.

“Webcams provide a first impression for virtual tourists before they actually visit the municipality and are a very effective tool for tourism an cul-tural promotion,” said Kalyn.

The camera would have provided visi-tors to the City of Campbell River web-site with a panoramic view of the waterfront and the downtown core.

Council won’tpursue webcam

Tenants flee apartment fire

Everyone escaped safely, but a cooking fire has left apartment block tenants in need of temporary shelter after a fire at a three-storey apartment complex on Sunday afternoon.

When the first responding crew of the Campbell River Fire Department arrived at the scene in the 200 block of 1st Ave., at 12:16 p.m., flames were showing from a second-floor unit.

“The crew captain immediately initiated an exterior knock down of the

flames while the other crew members made entry into the building to search for tenants and to make an interior attack on the fire,” said Fire Chief Dean Spry. “There were no injuries and all occupants got out safely…and various pets were rescued.”

Campbell River

Emergency Social Services attended the scene to help the tenants with accommodations and basic needs. The tenants will not be able to stay in their apartments until repairs are made. Fire stations No. 1 and No. 2 responded with 23 firefighters and four

pieces of apparatus, to perform fire suppression and rescues. The fire department determined that cooking was the cause of the fire.

“This incident is a graphic reminder of why we should never leave stoves unattended while cooking,” Spry said.

Police are warning drug users about poten-tially lethal methadone powder that was stolen from a Campbell River pharmacy early Mon-day morning.

“Police are warning the public that these

narcotics will likely be trafficked at the street level in the weeks to come and will pose a significant risk to those who take them,” said RCMP Sgt. Craig Massey in a news release. Around 4:20 a.m. Monday, culprits broke into Campbell River Health and Drug

Store located, in the Merecroft Village, and used a chain attached to a pickup truck to remove the store’s safe. The safe contained “a number of very potent narcotics which could be fatal if they are ingested by per-sons not prescribed,” said Massey. It is also

believed the pickup truck used in the heist had been stolen earlier from a local car dealer-ship.

“Video from area businesses confirms that members of the public were passing by the area while the offenders were com-mitting this offence,”

said Massey. “Anyone who saw any suspi-cious activity in the area of Merecroft Vil-lage early Monday morning is asked to contact the Campbell River RCMP.”

Witnesses can also provide information anonymously through Crime Stoppers.

EDITOR: Alistair [email protected]

Betty Fox was a tough lady. No, check that. Betty Fox was a mom who had to be tough.

Four kids, three boys. Working-class Port Coquitlam. Her second-youngest son is diagnosed with cancer. His leg is amputated.

That’s enough to deal with. That’s enough for a lifetime.

But the boy pushes. He saw things on the cancer ward. Just going on with his life minus one leg isn’t

enough. In the kitchen of their PoCo home a day after he completes a 17-mile run, he tells her his plan

to run across Canada — a marathon a day on one good leg and a prosthesis to raise money for cancer research. Betty reacts like a mom. We don’t know the precise words but they approximate “Are you nuts?”

She tells him it’s a stupid idea and he’s smarter than that. She tells him no able-bodied person has ever run from Newfoundland to B.C. She fights, a mom trying to protect her child from himself.

To no avail. Tough mom, determined kid.The rest of the story need not be repeated; it has

become a hero’s legend in Canada, complete with requisite tragic ending. But that’s just the beginning of Betty Fox’s story, a heroine’s tale in its own right.

Where you or I might have retreated in our grief, Betty and the Fox family stepped forward.

Where most would have held close their personal memories and moments, Betty went public.

Where many might allow the Marathon of Hope to fade into history as something too painful to think about day after day, Betty embraced it, embraced her son’s cause and made it her own, embraced it and worked in spite of the pain, because of the pain.

Terry lit the fire and she tended it for three decades. It was a tough job but somebody had to do it.

– Richard Dal Monte, The Tri-City News

Health

Let’s assume that when everyone in B.C. gets to be finance minister for a day, a majority choose to throw a $3-billion chair through the office window to show how mad they are about the harmonized sales tax.

The cleanup will take two years, but first there will be a provincial elec-tion to decide who holds the broom and dustpan. And the choices are becoming clear.

You have a new B.C. Liberal leader who has tacked to the centre on the minimum wage and business taxes in an effort to seek forgiveness for the high-handed administration that lost the public’s trust.

And you have two opposition par-ties that are entirely reactionary in their approach to today’s fast-chang-

ing world. There isn’t much to say at this point

about the B.C. Conservatives under John Cummins. They are against modern treaty settlements, the car-bon tax and (I think) the HST. They stand for lower taxes, but so far that doesn’t include a reduced sales tax rate.

The rest of their platform is plati-tudes, with enough of a whiff of pro-test to pave a path for an NDP govern-ment.

And the NDP manages to make the B.C. Conservatives look modern.

In January I described how the B.C. NDP constitution still formally endorses the government taking over major industries, and explicitly rejects all for-profit activity. I won’t

re-quote the convoluted Marxist lan-guage, which boils down to ‘state good, competition bad.’

A reader provides a real-time exam-ple of how this principle would apply to a problem confronting the B.C. government. To prevent another riot in Vancouver, the government should supervise an orderly redistribution of Stanley Cups.

This core principle of socialism, an 80-year-old relic, was debated at the national party’s convention in Vancouver on the weekend. Socialist dead-enders rallied to keep it alive, rejecting vague new wording that favours “social democratic princi-ples” to ensure “economic and social equality.”

This isn’t just an academic discus-

sion for party conventions. One ofthe last acts of the NDP opposition inthe B.C. legislature this spring was topropose a legislated end to poverty.

According to their bill, B.C. shouldcreate a Ministry of Poverty Reduc-tion with annual goals for imposingthe redistribution of wealth.

The “Poverty Reduction Act” con-tains a weasel-worded definitionof poverty: insufficient money to“acquire and maintain economic self-reliance” and “facilitate integrationinto and participation in society.”

Does this mean a guaranteedannual income? Can people achieve“economic self-reliance” by collect-ing welfare? Does anyone actually

Anyone that thinks that the heath care system is notbroken should go and try it out.

Last month I unfortunately had a heart attack. Arriv-ing at Campbell River Hospital, I was treated in theemergency ward.

I was told that they would put me in ICU but thatcouldn’t happen because there were no beds. I spentthe night in Emergency.

I was then sent to Victoria – to the Cardiac Short Stayunit. They did their little operation and then I shouldhave gone to the ward in the CVU.

Again, there was no room for me so I stayed in thesame Day Surgical Unit meant for an eight-hour stay.

I spent four days in that temporary unit and had twomore heart attacks while I waited.

They even tried to send me back to Campbell Riverbut again I was told there was no room at the Inn.

While I was in Victoria I met an old fellow that hadbeen flown down from Kelowna and operated on.

After it was done he was told that he would have tofind his own way home.

What kind of system would let old people, with noplace to stay, no money, and not able to look after him-self have to find their own way home?

I was fortunate enough to have family that was able tohelp me, what about the poor sod that is left stranded?

believe this stuff ?If you believe union-

ized state monopolies are the best business model, I guess so.

I won’t elaborate on the fringe parties such as Chris Delaney’s B.C. First, a splinter from the B.C. Conservative

stump.The Green Party

is the only one other than the B.C. Liberals that looks to the future. Perhaps too far in the future. The Greens want a dramatically increased carbon tax and a transition to a “steady state” econ-omy that doesn’t try to

produce and consume more. Try eliminating poverty with that pro-gram.

I frequently get let-ters from people who accuse me of parrot-ing the government’s line on issues such as the HST and poverty. If there are political alternatives out there

that make actual sense in today’s world, I’d love to hear about them.

Until then, these are the choices.

Any day now, NDP leader Adrian Dix might start to unveil the positive alternative he has promised for an election that may come

this fall. That will be some-

thing to examine closely.

Right now, he’s urg-ing you to throw that chair.

Campbell River teach-ers will take part in a province-wide strike vote next week.

Teachers will be vot-ing on “teach only” job action to begin Sept. 6, at the start of the new school year.

Voting will complete by June 28, and results are expected no later than the last day of school, June 30.

Negotiations for a new contract began

March 1 at both local

and provincial bargain-ing tables but no prog-ress has been made.

The “teach only” action would see teach-ers in class, teaching students, but not per-forming other admin-istrative duties such as entering attendance in computer databases (though attendance would still be taken), meeting with admin-istrators, and adminis-tering mandated tests.

E x t r a c u r r i c u l a r

activities would not be affected.

Teachers will con-tinue to teach, assess students, and commu-nicate with parents.

Teachers are seeking improvements to class size, class composition, preparation time and various local issues.

In addition, teachers are seeking a fair wage increase, to ensure B.C. teacher salaries are in line with Alberta, Ontario and western

Canada. “Quality teaching

means ensuring the profession remains an attractive career opportunity,” said Neil Thompson, President of the Campbell River District Teachers’ Association.

“Uncompetitive sala-ries will not attract the best to teaching. Com-bined with high levels of stress, overwork and large class sizes, B.C. is hardly on a path

to make our good pub-lic schools even better for families and stu-dents.”

In September, Brit-ish Columbia teach-ers’ salaries will rank eighth in Canada, with an average B.C. teacher with 10 year’s experience earning over $21,000 less than a teacher in Alberta.

This fall, B.C. teach-ers are scheduled to receive a zero per cent wage settlement.

Two new city staff positions

had to be justified in front of

council Wednesday, the third day

of budget deliberations.

Council got hung up debating

the addition of a second custo-

dian for the Community Centre to

address safety concerns related to

working alone. The $77,000 per year position

was added to help support the

custodian working alone after

office hours who’s had to deal

with fighting and public drunke-

ness (see story on page A5).

“We had some very, very close

calls,” Ross Milnthorp, city parks,

recreation and culture manager,

told council. “We believe this

position is integral to the safety

of workers and customers.”

He said a joint health and safety

committee originally took a num-

ber of steps to fix the problem

including setting up cameras

and setting alarms on the doors

of the Community Centre. In the

end, the committee felt the best

solution would be to add a second

custodian.Coun. Claire Moglove acknowl-

edged that having the transit

exchange at the Community Cen-

tre has potentially contributed

to the amount of mischief that

occurs in and around that area.

But Coun. Andy Adams said

moving the transit system

exchange to the Community Cen-

tre was the right thing to do.

“I believe most parents would

say they feel more safe putting

their child on a bus that ends

up where it does now instead of

at the former bus shelter (Tyee

Plaza) which was not a very nice

place,” he said. The second additional city staff

position is a $84,000 per year dep-

uty clerk, a position mandated by

the city.City Manager Andy Laidlaw

said the position needs to be in

place in order to maintain opera-

tions. Peter Wipper, who took over the

position of city clerk after Bill

Halstead retired last year, said

a few months ago while on holi-

days, he was called in to work to

sign papers that were time sensi-

tive. If the city had had a deputy

clerk at the time, they could have

signed the papers in Wipper’s

place.

Campbell River is making “major strides in developing local tourism” with the expansion of the air-port, said North Island Member of Parliament John Duncan.

Duncan, city council and local First Nations were at the Campbell River Airport Friday to celebrate the com-pletion of the upgrade project and to unveil the airport’s first piece of original art.

The $8.3 million project broke ground in July and came in under budget by about $500,00.

It created an esti-mated 45,793 person hours of employment or approximately 22 years of work.

The project involved the extension of the runway by 1,500 feet to a total length of 6,500 feet, modernizing the airport terminal build-ing, and upgrading the field electrical centre.

“These upgrades will help Campbell River

greatly as one of the fastest growing munic-ipalities on the Island,” said Duncan. “And it provides important transportation options into the city and the whole North Island.”

Bill Alder, who’s com-pany, Sealand Aviation, is a fixture on the air-port grounds, said with the expansion, the city is headed in the right direction.

“It has the potential to attract more busi-ness and corporate aircraft because of the extra length. Now they can fuel up here instead of having to stop in a secondary location to re-fuel,” said Alder. “It gives the city the opportunity to have discussions with other airlines. It opens up a lot of doors.”

He said the upgrade and expansion pro-vides stability.

“In reality, it should have happened a long time ago,” said Alder. “Now that it’s done, the city should start a movement towards r e a l l y p r o m o t i n g the airport and the

improvements there.”To show off the new

and improved termi-nal building, which now has an expanded d e p a r t u r e s a r e a , updated check-in coun-ters, and digital flight information boards, a celebration ceremony

featuring traditional First Nations dancers, kicked off the unveil-ing of the new art piece that hangs from the ceil-ing between the arrival and departure gates.

K e n B l a c k b u r n and Bill Henderson worked together to

create the piece – an aluminum airplane painted in traditional K w a k w a k a ’ w a k w colours called Thun-derbird. Blackburn and Henderson’s work was selected by city staff from among 12 submis-sions.

Since the beginning of time, humans have attempted to seek spir-itual connection with the land through the use of a drum.

The drum unites the heartbeat of the earth with the heartbeat of the people. It bonds communities together and serves as a pro-found healing tool. To drum is to become part of the greater wisdom of the world.

T he Museum at Campbell River is offering a rare oppor-

tunity to build and learn about a drum.

On Saturday, from 1-4 p.m., master drum-maker Jorge ‘Two Eagles’ Lewis will guide participants through the process of constructing a drum.

Along the way, Lewis will offer teachings about drums, including the respect paid to the animal who has sacri-ficed its hide, stories of how the drum came to the people, usage of the drum and the spiritual connection of drums that continues from ancient times to today.

Each participant will create a 14” drum for keeping and will have ample opportunity to discuss drumming and learn about the con-struction of drums.

Lewis is from the Snuneymuxw nation, a descendent of pow-erful Shamans, mask dancers and chiefs. He

has resided in Camp-bell River for most of his life.

The fee for the workshop is $200 and includes all of the

needed hide and mate-rials.

This is a profound opportunity to gain insight into the on-going spiritual connec-

tion between drums and people.

Space is very limited so call the Museum at 250-287-3103 to reserve your spot.

There’s nothing like a day in the garden on a warm June day.

Whether the sun is shining or a summer rain is falling, the fra-grance and beauty of gardens of all sizes are a June joy.

The public can get an up-close view of some joyous June gardens during the 2011 Camp-bell River Art Gallery Garden and Art Tour Saturday and Sunday. The fundraising event, sponsored by Royal LePage Campbell River, features 13 gardens this year, including eight properties new to the tour. Few people love the earth more than a gardener, so visitors to this year’s batch of gardens will see a wide variety of conservation techniques and eco-

friendly approaches to creating an oasis.

G a r d e n e r J u n e Greens said her con-servationist attitude stems from the fact that she can’t stand to see anything go to waste. When she and her hus-

band Frank bought their home on a ridge above the Campbell River, she described the property as a mess with no garden. The Greens spent months working outside to cre-ate a Victorian-style

garden full of roses. Tickets for the self-

guided tour are $15 and available at the Gallery, at the Visitor Info Cen-tre or at the Willows Market. Call the Gal-lery at 250-287-2261 for more information.

Five hundred mountain bike riders from all over the world are about to descend on Campbell River.

These riders are competing in a seven-stage mountain bike race, with Campbell River host-ing stage two.

With a mass start at 9 a.m. Monday, July 4 at Robert Ostler Park, the peloton (group of rid-ers) will travel along the Island Highway toward Highway 28 and into the Snowden Demonstration Forest. The return trip to the finish line in front of the Tidemark Theatre will be along 16th Ave.

The first rider is expected to cross the finish line at 11:30 a.m. The last of the 500 riders is expected to arrive at approximately 4:30 p.m. To add to the festive atmosphere at the finish, the City has arranged for face painting, entertain-ment and food at Spirit Square – something for everyone in the family to enjoy.

“The square will be rockin’ and rollin’, so make a day of it,” says Spirit Square manager, Jim Creighton. “Take in the race, have dinner and enjoy a free concert.”

Restaurants in the area are offering BC Bike Race specials, and Campbell River’s own Reunion will give a free concert at Spirit Square from 7-º9 p.m.

For more information about the full day of BC Bike Race excitement, call 250-286-1161 and check out the Spirit Square website at www.spiritsquare.ca.

On Saturday the Jr. Ravens travelled to

the Nanaimo Ice Cen-tre to face off against the Timbermen.

It was a tough trip for the Ravens, coming away with a 15-6 loss.

The Timbermen got

into some early penalty trouble and the Ravens would take advantage with a side by side pass along the crease from Smith to Marlow for the first goal of the game at 17:46. Hayden Smith would then get a goal of his own unas-

sisted five minutes later and with three minutes left in the first, Thomas Marks would take a quick shot after a pass up the floor from Tyson Fair to give the Ravens their third goal. The first period ended 4-3

for Nanaimo. The second period

went back and forth with Smith getting a marker off the face off at 17:34 for his second of the game and Chris Vaux scoring unas-sisted. The T-men continued to shoot on

net and would get 3 more markers in the second. The Ravens were down 7-5 but within reach of tying up the game when at 7:40 left in the sec-ond, netminder Logan Down would make a

save that would bring him to the floor. After being unable to bounce back up the trainers checked his reflexes and he would stand up to get back in the game. The pain showed in his face and movements but he didn’t want to give up the pipes and with no back up goalie he continued to play. Nanaimo would get in his face for another marker before Mar-low would find the corner of the net on a bounce pass from Brayden Howes to give the Ravens their sixth goal of the game.

Down would con-tinue facing the T-men in net but as the crowd watched him try to fend off the opponents they would score another.

He fought the pain to bring the team through the second period before the coaching staff would

look at players to find a back up for the third. Midget call up Cody Bezaire stepped up to the plate and dressed for net.

Although Bezaire would make some saves, the defense couldn’t hold the T-men back as they would get 6 unan-swered goals in the third but the Ravens showed their grit and that they never give up with heroic efforts by both goalies.

Home for Sunday

On Sunday, the Ravens looked f o r w a r d t o

a home game after two weekends on the road as they would host the Vic-Esquimalt Eagles for their sec-ond match of the sea-son and the Campbell River squads second game of the weekend.

With Down out on the injury list and midget call up Matt Zeller unavailable, the fans wondered who would play in net. After an early season deci-sion to take the year off, netminder Errol

Adams would recieve a call from the Ravens coaching staff and Adams would agree to the challenge of fill-ing the net for the Jr Ravens.

And fill it he did.Hayden Smith would

start off the scoring in the game when at 15:52 he received a pass from Brayden Howes for the Ravens first goal.

V i c - E s q u i m a l t came back with their own four minutes later before Ravens captain Chris Vaux gets a rebound from Adams and with a break away would run the floor for an excit-ing second goal of the game. The first period would end 2-1 for the home side.

Three minutes into the second Adams w o u l d n e e d a quick break to calm some nerves before heading back on the floor to take control between the pipes. The first goal in the second would come when at 13:17 Brayden Howes would find his way around the Vic Esquimalt goalie to get

a marker on a power play pass from Eddy Lawson via Josh Why-ley.

Five minutes later Tyson Fair would find himself open in front of the net and would shoot to score the Ravens’ fourth goal. The home boys were on a roll now and as Vaux rolled the faceoff ball to Howes, he would pick it up to run the floor for his second of the game only seven seconds later. A few minutes later Eddy Lawson would pass to Smith to Mar-low who would find the corner of the net for their sixth. As the Ravens didn’t seem quite ready a quick goal would come from Vic Esquimalt with less than a min. left in play. The second period would end Ravens 6 over the Eagles 2.

The third period would find Fair on the scoreboard again after a pass from Howes and Blair Freer at 13:54 to give the home team their sev-enth goal. With pres-sure on net and the

Vic Esquimalt Eaglesplaying 5 on 3, Adamswould take anotherquick break before theEagles would scoretheir third of the gameat 10:49.

As the Ravens cameoff a penalty, Howespasses to Rempel com-ing out of the box for asmooth transition anda shot on net givingRempel his first of thegame and the Ravenseighth goal.

Then after a missedtoo many men callfor the visitors theywould score their 4thgoal of the game. TheRavens weren’t readyto give another goal upas the defense checkedhard and at 6:35 a passfrom David Vigneronto Arran Marlow toJosh Whyley wouldresult in the Ravens’ninth goal.

Three minutes laterthe Ravens would rallyround the net for Mar-low to get another for the Ravens on a passfrom Blair Freer. Atthe end of the game theRavens would gain twopoints for their impres-sive 10-4 win over theVic Esquimalt Eagles.

The offense of thosewith points above aswell as Adam Donaldand Matt Lund playedthe ball and workedhard to get scoringchances, the defenselead by veteran Con-n o r M c L e o d a n drookie Chris Lund aswell as Mac Maier,Cody Gent and NiklasPremke (and those withpoints above) talked onthe floor to help eachother out with posi-tioning while keepingcontrol and pushingthe Eagles away fromscoring chances.

Credit on the winalso goes to new goalieAdams for makingsaves while comingout to play the first JrB game of his career.

The Jr Ravens wishregular netminderLogan Down a speedyrecovery on a shoulderinjury while they getready for the last weekof league play. On Sat-urday, the Ravens willtake their last roadtrip of the regular sea-son to face off againstSaanich at Pearkesarena while on Sunday, the Ravens will fin-ish the season in theirhome barn at the RodBrind’Amour arena, game time 3:30.

Brandon Philips led all but one lap to take home the win on the A heat, which marked his first A heat win of the year. Pearson battled his way from the very back to take the win in the C invert heat. Bob Fraser led the B invert heat for four laps until James Buch-anan took over the lead and never looked back from there. This also marks the first win for James Buchanan this 2011 season.

W i l l i a m B o y e s started on the pole in

the A invert heat and managed to hold off the field from there, taking the win. The 25 lap B feature saw Brad Dimitrov get out to an early lead.

Dimitrov held this lead for 21 laps until Townsend took over the lead. An alterca-tion on lap 22 caused Tristin Gait to be black flagged, also taking out Jordan Phillips in the altercation.

Townsend would go on to take the lead with second going to Dim-itrov and third to Law-renuk, who was filling

on for his daughter Jennifer on the night.

The 30-lap A feature saw Cameron Philips take the lead on lap 1. Phillips held this lead for 17 laps until Daryl Cahill took over the lead.

Cahill would stretch out his lead from there and would go on to win the A feature. This is Cahill’s second main event win of the year. Gord Fraser finished second and Daryn Cahill finished third.

Extra laps…Next week will mark the first appearance of the

Wilroc Sprint cars and the Wilroc Lite cars. The Old Time Modified stock cars have also been added onto the schedule. The IMCA Modifieds will fill out the racing card on the night.

Meanwhile, Sarato-ga’s 30th anniversary is approaching.

An amazing night of Fireworks, amaz-ing shows from the Jet Dragster and the Limo Jump, and great racing from the Dwarf cars, Bomber cars and the IMCA Modifieds will take place on July 2.

ILLEGAL DUMPING CHERI P/UP

The public will get a chance to discuss the latest information on BC Hydro’s operations and capital projects today.

The annual BC Hydro Campbell River System open house will take place from 4-8 p.m., at the Campbell River Coast Discovery Inn.

Capital project staff will be available to discuss dam safety upgrade works com-pleted at Strathcona Dam last fall and to be started at John Hart Dam this summer, and the John Hart Genera-tion Station Replace-ment Project.

Staff will also be available to discuss the

challenging hydroelec-tric operations year given the near record snow pack.

“This is one-stop shopping for the gen-eral public to come out and learn, ask questions, and provide input to BC Hydro’s Campbell River Sys-tem hydroelectric proj-ects,” says BC Hydro spokesperson, Stephen Watson. “For the John Hart project, we have been collaborating with key stakeholders and agencies for years, and it has been very helpful to understand and consider commu-nity perspectives as the project evolves. It is also very important

to talk and listen to the general public every June so that people have the latest infor-mation and can pro-vide additional input. Success for this event is getting as many people out to the open house as possible - we would like to hear from you.”

The John Hart Gen-erating Station has been in operation for more than 60 years. There are river flow interruption concerns and potential impacts to fish, the need for seismic upgrades, and replacing equipment that has reliability issues.

BC Hydro encour-

ages the public to come out to hear about the status of the project, and to also learn about commitments made to the Canyon View Trail, river access, Brewster Lake Road Bridge, to how it is collaborating and working with local and regional business leaders on possible eco-nomic benefits during construction.

The procurement and regulatory processes are expected to begin later this year.

An upgrade project to a section of the John Hart earthfill dam, near the Spillway Dam, will take place around mid-August to end of September. Staff will

go over the project, the closure to the Brewster Lake Road during con-struction, and the detour route.

Staff will also be available to discuss the unique and successful Strathcona Dam Intake Tower Upgrade project completed last fall.

BC Hydro’s Campbell River System opera-tions engineer will go over the historical water inflows, inflow forecasts and the oper-ational considerations for various water use interests.

This discussion will include possible res-ervoir levels and river flows through the sum-mer.

Adults with mental health and addictions issues in Campbell River will benefit from a further expansion of VIHA’s Mental Health and Addictions team and the creation of a food program.

“This expanded pro-gram benefits clients and families by focus-ing on each individ-ual’s needs and goals

and it reflects our commitment to ensur-ing that a comprehen-sive system of mental health and addictions services are available right across the prov-ince,” said Comox Val-ley MLA, Don McRae.

The after-hours cli-nician that was intro-duced to the MHAS team over the last two years will now be avail-

able to clients seven days a week. To build on the success of this program, a rehabilita-tion worker is being added to the team. The rehabilitation worker will focus on con-necting VIHA mental health and addictions clients with services and with maintenance of housing.

“Improving access to services for indi-viduals with Mental Health and Addictions issues is a key prior-ity for VIHA,” said Don Hubbard, VIHA Board Chair. “This further expansion to VIHA’s Mental Health and Addictions team in Campbell River will make a real difference in the community and especially for clients as they move forward with their lives.”

The rehabilitation

worker is a part of the client’s care team and will assist clients liv-ing in supportive and market rent housing will developing skills that will assist clients in maintaining their housing. This will be tailored to the client’s needs and goals.

The after-hours cli-nician focuses on early intervention with individuals wanting to connect to needed mental health and/or addiction services and adds an extra level of support to individu-als already connected to Mental Health and Addiction Services. The clinician works with other clinicians and the client towards enhancing coping and interpersonal skills and community con-nections, including more stable housing.

The Campbell River Business & Profes-sional Women’s Net-work (BPWN) has been providing leadership and growth opportu-nities to women in the community for 20 years.

To mark this auspi-cious occasion, the 20th Anniversary Gala committee is busy pre-paring a fabulous night of Entertainment and Celebration to be held at the Maritime Heri-tage Center on June 28th from 6-9 p.m. This marks 20 years to the day of the first official meeting of the BPWN. A silent Auction to raise money for the two bursaries will be held, and donations are still being taken. Each year bursaries are given to deserving women looking to move into the workforce through educational facilities. Auction items can be dropped off to Kim Jarvis at Shadoe Inti-mates, 249 10th Street (beside Chan Nowosad and Boates).

The mandate of the organization is to help members develop their skills and contacts in a supportive organiza-tion. Over the years this has included at meetings: presenta-tions by members, speakers, and network-ing over a great dinner.

There are also special member only events such as an upcoming Medieval Night, and speakers have included the likes of Vicki Gab-ereau, and Pamela Martin.

Marne Svennes, a founding member of the BPWN, says “I really think it’s great that what started with 7 women 20 years ago still has a strong pres-ence in the community for business women today.

I would like to honor the other women who

were on that first BPWN board of direc-tors with me; Shannon Marshall, Margo Cor-mack, Stevie Arthurs, Pat O’Handley, Kathy McKay & Beth Ann Koslovich.”

Due to limited tickets available, they must be purchased in advance from the web-site or from Kim at Shadoe Intimates by June 23, 2011. No payments will be taken at the door. Members are $35 and Guests $40 for this Gala Event.

Great dining and fab-

ulous entertainment you won’t want to miss. This is a black tie cel-ebration and spouses are welcome (count as a guest).

Arelene Leduc, Mercedes Hayduk, Marlene Wright, and Corinne Matheson are ready to mark the Business and Professional Women’s Network’s 29th anniver-sary.
