Final Greetings from Graham Dear Friends,

I am writing this as we wait for the removal men (am I still allowed to say that?) to arrive to take our belongings to Yeovil.

Jackie and I were overwhelmed by the thought and preparation that went into our last Sunday here. It was wonderful to see the church full, and to enjoy such a splendid meal with so many of you afterwards. We were stunned at the generosity and thoughtfulness of the gifts we received, and tickled pink by the Bourton Players’ performance. Thank goodness the women intervened to spare our blushes I am led to understand, however, that one or two women resented their intrusion and wanted the first part of the show to go on...Thank you to all those who worked so hard behind and in front of the scenes to make the day so special.

We have also been very touched by all the kind words that were spoken, and the numerous cards, notes and emails that we have received. Thank you! What a wonderful place this is. The next person appointed here will be very fortunate to live and serve in such a caring and appreciative setting.

They may take our belongings to Yeovil, but part of our hearts will always be here in Upper Stour.

And finally, finally, finally.... Some preachers say 'finally...' and they finish; others say 'lastly...' and they last!

Finally,

Your friend in Christ,

Graham Rev Graham Perryman

~ ~ ~ Hello from Kirsty

It’s great to be working in Upper Stour – I look forward to getting to know you better, so let me introduce myself. I’m a final year curate, who is on permanent placement here in the Parish of Upper Stour. I trained at Sarum College, Salisbury and was ordained in 2016. I have spent the last three years serving in the Benefice of Sturminster Newton, Hinton St Mary and Lydlinch. Although I live in Gillingham, I hope to get out and about in the villages and would love to hear from you as to where the best places are to meet with other people – or walk the dogs. When I’m not working I can often be found at dog shows all over the country with my papillons, many of whom were born at home, and I try to get to exhibit at Crufts every year.

As I am writing this we are in the Easter Season, which lasts for 50 days after Easter, it is a time of celebration in the church, but is also a time of waiting with the disciples, who were feeling lost without the daily presence of Jesus. They didn’t know the end of the story! We are approaching the Festival of Pentecost, another celebration – the Birthday of the Church - when we remember the Holy Spirit descending on all the believers who were gathered. We will celebrate the Feast on 9th June, 10.00am at St Mary’s Church, Kilmington – all welcome. In the early church the disciples sold all that they had and distributed it to those who had need (Acts 4:35). As well as being involved in the life of the villages and their churches I am also an advocate for the charity ACTS435, which helps people in any kind of need in England. I am passionate about social justice, and have access to the local Foodbank, which is linked through Open Door to Christians Against Poverty, a debt relief charity. If you know of anyone in need please let me know in confidence. I’m also happy to visit just for a chat. With every blessing,

Kirsty Rev Kirsty Wells 01747 723562 [email protected]

Green Fingers : June Notes from the not so green fingered

The Rose The flower of the month of June is among the most fragrant of all: the Rose. There is a reason why roses have inspired poets and painters for centuries and if you only know about supermarket roses, think again. Symbolically the rose has countless meanings: a pink rose means joy, a white rose signifies innocence and purity, a yellow rose conveys jealousy, and a red rose means "I love you". Botanically, the rose is the most loved plant in our gardens. There are approx 13,000 identifiable varieties of rose throughout the world and their cultivation most likely began 5,000 years ago. Technically, roses are shrubs and are members of the Rosaceae family. They are easy to grow and are generally long lived plants. They are mostly fully hardy and will tolerate almost any type of soil. They are greedy plants so they will benefit from an annual feed of well rotted garden compost or manure. Roses should be dead headed after flowering in order to encourage a second flush. One of the best displays of roses locally can be seen at Mottisfont near Stockbridge. Pippa Schofield

News from Stourhead

The garden is still looking fabulous and full of blooms, which is great news as we are still celebrating Floralia, the ancient Roman festival in honour of Flora, the goddess of flowers and spring. Early mornings and late afternoons in the garden really do offer a tranquil experience and a chance to escape and relax in truly

beautiful surroundings, making it the perfect place for an evening walk or even a picnic enjoying the last of the day’s sun.

As the season progresses and transforms into summer you will see our offers for visitors, in particular for our family visitors, increase. We are pleased to be working with the Great Big Tree Climbing Company who will be offering tree climbing experiences for children and families, although everyone is welcome to have a go. We are also pleased to be bringing back Bank or Bust, a life-sized board game which can be played around the garden at weekends and throughout the summer holidays.

We have recently been given the sad news that phytophthora ramorum has been found in the garden. For those who don’t know this is an algae-like organism sometimes called a water mould. It causes extensive damage and death to more than 150 plant species, including some forest and woodland species. We are therefore working closely with APHA (the government’s Animal and Plant Health Agency) to manage this outbreak, including by destroying any infected plants.

As a result of the discovery of phytophthora ramorum in the garden, on your next visit to Stourhead you may see more signs and notices asking you to stick to the paths and not to venture into restricted or cordoned off areas. We will also be asking visitors to avoid taking plant materials, cuttings or plants home from the landscape garden as well as removing any soil or debris from shoes when leaving the garden to help prevent the spread of the disease further.

If you are keen to find out more about Stourhead or get involved in the work that we do, we have lots of volunteering opportunities across the property. Please do contact me. We look forward to seeing you at Stourhead again soon.

Country Calendar June 2019 Swathes of verdant green, lie beneath a sky so green

Warming sun, gentle breeze, call of the cuckoo and the hum of bees Many decades pass still we cut our grass,

Turn it into hay as in days of yore, ready for winter’s store June is a beautiful month especially when the sun shines and we can get on with the hay and silage making. The show season is in full swing and one of the first is the North Somerset Show. Harry was approached by the Show Committee to judge “Any Other Native Breed”. Of course he was very honoured to be asked - he has done quite a bit of cattle judging over the years. The North Somerset Show, held near Bristol, is a proper Country Show with lots of livestock entries; it is extremely well attended. Harry was quite taken aback when the usual judge’s pack arrived and the covering letter confirmed that he was “Judging any other native breed of Sheep!” Not what he was expecting at all, so with two days to go he had to do a little homework. Ringing his sheep showing/judge expert, his comments were: for a ram just check it has teeth in its head, and, most importantly, it has a good pair of testicles. I am not saying Harry was not up for the job, as he has shown sheep before, but has not judged them. Our own Exmoor Horns have won many prizes over the years. Undeterred Harry entered the Sheep Ring. The first class was “a ram born before 1.09.17”. There was one solitary entry, a young girl with a rather large ungainly looking ram that was level pegging in height with its handler. Approaching cautiously Harry asked the name of the animal hoping she would say its breed; the answer was “Owen”. “And how old is Owen?” -- “don’t know”. The only course of action was to look at its teeth to confirm its age; except every time an attempt was made to look in its mouth it took off taking its handler with it! Harry thought better of checking its testicles; they could be seen and that was going to be good enough. Our Steward for this sheep section was the most charming gentleman, but seemed a little confused and of a somewhat nervous disposition. Quietly confessing to me that he had never done this before, I was tempted to say “neither has the Judge” but thought better of it, instead confidently replying,” not to worry we will work it out between us”. Harry then ruined it all by asking him what breed the ram was. The poor Steward froze in total paralysis, so I got the Show Schedule, looked it up and whispered “Blue Faced Leicester”, whereupon he smiled and handed Harry the first Rosette of the day. There was utter relief for this poor man and utter delight for the young girl and Owen the Ram who by then was determined to leave the ring with or without its handler. The rest of the classes were a doddle, lots more sheep from Black Welsh Mountain, Ryedale, Lleyn, Welsh Mule, Beulah. Badgerfaced Welsh Mountain and Poll Dorset. By the end of the day both Judge and Steward were much more experienced and confident with Sheep Judging and Stewarding in “Native Breeds” They certainly got no complaints from competitors, and in fact Harry has been asked back next year to judge…. yes you guessed it : Cattle. News from Parish Councils

Bourton The last parish council meeting took place on 29th April. The open forum part of the meeting lasted over an hour (an unusual amount of time) but this part of the meeting gives everyone the chance to voice an opinion and have their say. The Chairman of the Council, Mike Withers, confirmed that since nine nominations had been made for the nine available positions on the Parish Council these individuals were deemed to be elected unopposed. Sheila Williams (Community Safety) reported that during April a Police speed control van had made twenty-four bookings during one morning when stationed at Sandways. It has been reported that lots of rubbish has been left at the playing field by children at the weekend – just a polite reminder to ask that all rubbish be either put in the bin or taken home, especially if the bin is full and overflowing. A dog mess bin has been moved to Brickyard Lane and already there has been a marked improvement on the amount of mess left on the lane. Please see the Bourton Village website www.bourtondorset.org for information on what’s going on within the parish and for further information on the Parish Council.

Eve Wynn, Bourton Parish Clerk: 07702 709557

Kilmington Apologies that the correct Kilmington PC report for May was not included last month. It is below: Specific details of various road white line repainting, road surface repairs, blocked drains, damaged railings and finger posts have been submitted to Wiltshire Council (WC) as part of their initiative to improve the appearance of rural villages. We hope these will be actioned during the course of the year. An on-site meeting has been held with the WC Rights of Way Warden to discuss a way forward with regard to footpath KIL16 running across the playing field and the outcome will be discussed and hopefully approved at the next Parish Council (PC) meeting. Following the discussions at the last PC meeting on a parking area using some of the playing field land, the Clerk has checked back on the purchase of the land from the National Trust in 2000 and there are restrictive covenants in force. A letter has therefore been sent to the NT requesting a covenant release in order for the next phase of the project to go ahead which will be to draw up an estimate of the cost of providing the extra parking.

June 2019: Our request for repainting of white lines throughout the village has already been actioned by Wiltshire Council and we are hopeful that the other jobs we have requested will be undertaken during the next few months. A full report on the Annual Parish and Annual Parish Council meetings held on 16 May will be given in the July/August edition of this magazine. Ruth Burrows, Clerk

Stourton with Gasper Fast Fibre Broadband for Stourton : The National Trust has been liaising with BT Openreach and through the Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme we now have the opportunity, if enough businesses and residents sign up to the scheme, to bring Fast Fibre Broadband to Stourton.

• The scheme provides a potential guaranteed speed of up to 330Mbit/s to each property.

• You will not be tied to using any particular service provider.

• Businesses and residents will be required to sign up to a voucher scheme which will fund the installation costs.

• A list of qualifying premises can be found on the noticeboard in the Spread Eagle Courtyard and on the parish website www.stourton.org.uk

To register your interest, with no commitment at this stage, please email Catherine Spencer at [email protected] by Monday 17th June. The white line repainting we requested in April has been completed and we are now hoping that the other jobs we asked to be undertaken will be done during the summer months. There will be a full report in the July/August edition of the magazine following our Annual PC meeting on 23 May. Ruth Burrows, Clerk

Zeals Our meeting in May is always a busy and long occasion in that there are actually three separate meetings taking place in succession over the course of the evening. The Annual Parish Meeting is always fascinating as representatives from local organisations within the village present their reports on their special activities over the past year. They do form a more or less complete historical record and they make for interesting reading for all concerned. At the Annual General Meeting of the Parish Council, elections are held for the posts of Chair and Vice-Chair from amongst the elected councillors, with Charles Spencer and Mark Gibbons continuing in their posts. In that he is also the responsible Financial Officer for the Parish Council, the Clerk has to present the internally audited accounts for the past financial year to councillors, before the accounts, once they are approved, are sent off to the external auditors. The normal bi-monthly meeting of the Parish Council which follows on and completes the evening deals with routine matters. However, on this occasion full details of the progress so far with the ownership of the playground will be covered. The minutes for all the above meetings can be viewed on the Parish noticeboards or read on-line at www.hugofox.com/communities/zeals. The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday 11 July.
