3:00 pm Showing of documentary “Paper Tigers” –
“Paper Tigers captures the pain, the danger, the
beauty, and the hopes of struggling teens—and
the teachers armed with new science and fresh
approaches that are changing their lives for the
better.” The “new science” referred to by the
producers in this description of their film is the
findings from the Adverse Childhood
Experiences Study, known as the ACE Study. As
one Head Start Director noted, “It is a
documentary following the lives of several
children who are affected by ACEs (adverse
childhood effects). It highlights the damage of
chronic traumatic stress and its effects on brain
development. I believe that it is a must watch in
the Head Start community as many of our parents
show symptoms of “ACEs” and our young
children are “earning” their ACEs as we
speak. The film makes the case for trauma
informed practices and developmental parenting
which I believe are two things every Head Start
program should be tuning in to”.
