P R E S I D E N T ’ S R E P O R TU P D AT E

This is my first report for the last fewmonths. It seems like forever and asI write this it is ten weeks. It has been

a long and tough road for me, however Ireally do appreciate all of the support, bestwishes and visits that I have had from somany Club members. I was able to attendthe last general meeting, but took a seat inthe audience as it had been a tough daywith my cast being removed that morning.I am undertaking extensive rehab andhydrotherapy and seeing results. Iprobably will not be able to drive untilabout week twelve. The last meeting I waslooking forward to and thoroughly enjoyedthe presentation on Geocaching. It wasincredible to see and learn just how big thisrecreation has become. I was particularlyintrigued by the sheer numbers that are inthe suburbs let alone anywhere else. Ihave to say that the idea of having to find acache that may only be as big as a blow flyor a tiny film canister is pretty daunting. The idea that the caches are hidden was areal eye opener. A fun topic and one Iintent to have a go at when I can.Recently a celebration of ten years of theClub’s memorial garden was held. Thegarden was the idea of Joy Thomas whose

life was celebrated

on the day. I was unable to attend due tophysical constraints but delighted-ly wrote a short recollection of the gardenand Joy to be read on the day. If you havenot had the chance to visit the memorialgarden, then next time you are up theretake the short walk in and see what makesthis spot on the property so very special.FWDV’s 40th anniversary celebration isabout to take place as I write this report. This event has taken a lot of effort to set upand run. I am delighted to report that theevent was booked out. The support of theevent has been simply overwhelming. Itwould be remiss of me not to specificallythank Sandra Tanner for all of her hardwork in organizing the event and also toTony Middleditch for his efforts in organiz-ing all of the trips that are to be run overthe weekend. It is hard to put a price onthe impact of the event to the community, but with fuel, food, accommodation, etc.etc. Mansfield will gain significant financialadvantage due to our attendance.Just this last weekend the ExploreAustralia Expo took place again at theshow grounds. I am yet to receive a reportas to just how the event went, but I wouldlike to thank all of those people involvedboth in the set-up and manning of the

stand. I hope all went well.At the last meeting a debate took placeabout the age of dependent children beingallowed to be part of their parents member-ship. The Committee has considered thesituation, however further investigationsare yet to take place. That’s about all that I have to say at thisstage, but can I just remind you all to makesure that you support our Club sponsorsand make sure you tell them what Club youare from and whilst at it, thank them fortheir support. Also remember that manytracks close on the Queen’s Birthday week-end.I look forward to catching up with more ofyou over the coming months.

Lock your hubs Mt Skene snow trip.....continuedDetails:

Trip Leaders:

A large, exciting & family friendly weekend trip to Mt Skene to experience some of the best snow driving in Victoria. We will be based at the Jamieson Hotel from where we will travel up to Mt Skene to drive in the snow, have some fun & then return to the pub & socialise.New members are encouraged to come along & vehicles will be split into two groups with two trips run concurrently to ensure that the large number of vehicles run smoothly.Simon Mustey & Sheery Salvesen: Email: [email protected] & Sara Lilley.

AUGUST ‘THE COOKOUT’Date: Friday 14th - Sunday 16th August, 2015Meeting Place: Yarck HiltonTime: People are welcome to come up on Friday afternoon / evening & set up their gear (I’ll be there). Cooking

extravanganza to start on Saturday soon after breakfast but people are welcome to start beforehand if timing iscritical to their efforts, and I’ll be attempting scones - again.

Limit: All people welcome to attend (on the proviso that everyone cooks something, but no roasts please - unless it is aroast with a difference, i.e if you do it on a spit (someone has done this in the past) or if you bone & stuff it (we alsohad someone do a carpet bag roast once), or if it is an exotic meat (goat, roo, emu, rabbit, buffalo, camel) - you getthe idea.

Standard: That depends on your appetite.Equipment: Any/all your camp cooking equipment & paraphernalia you have collected over the years OR stuff you’ve bought in

anticipation of using one day (but never had the chance - or the courage - to use it). In the past we’ve had everything from camp ovens to bedouries to converted kegs, to spits, to dream pots & even cardboard ovens.

Details: This trip was run a few years ago with great success. Due to work commitments & other stuff, it went by thewayside for a number of years, but due to popular demand, it is back. It has been designed with EVERYONE inmind to learn & share their cooking experiences, recipes, etc. that they’ve collected over the years. As winter willbe upon us (& the tracks closed), & we’ll all be snuggled in our respective hidey-holes, this is about doing some-in WINTER.Everyone is requested to prepare something - Saturday night has been known to be a rather large evening with arecord 16 camp ovens in 2003 (so don’t eat). People are also welcome to test ‘stuff’ on Friday evening as I’ll be upthere early anyway.IMPORTANT NOTES: No camp oven roasts please. This is about challenging yourself & your gear to try some-thing new/different (unless it is a roast with a difference).Normal camping rules apply. Please be self sufficient (BYO everything) & take your rubbish with you. Please make sure you have a written (typed is better) copy of whatever it is you’re cooking for the ‘trip report’(even email is OK as we now have reception at Yarck).

I gave background informa-tion on Joy’s vision and how this projectprogressed. Sue spoke of Joy’s love anddedication to the Evergreeen aspects ofour property. A number of past memberswere remembered and Lorraine Hollowwas there to plant a shrub in memory ofBob Hollow (a past President). Sueplanted one for Joy and Bernice plantedone for Bill who passed away last month. We then returned to the hut for a latemorning tea and to swap a few memories.Brian Stewart (340)YARCK MANAGEMENT COORDINATOR

Yarck Memorial Garden 10th Anniversary

This was initiated by Joy Thomas(GUMNUT) in 2003 and her vision was

to create a special area where memberscould go and sit to reflect on times gone byspent with those no longer with us. Whereshould this be? A number of sites werelooked at and Joy chose this spot. Thereare magnificent views out across thevalley to the hills far away and of the com-petition area with the ‘bus stop’ tucked inthe trees. A great choice.September/October, 2003 preparationsare underway as Joy recruits helpers. There are holes to dig for the plants, someof which will attract the birds. Digging toshape the seat area that will be built ofstone. Sparky (Alan Whitefield) said hewould acquire a selection to choose from

and Paul Langenberg offered his land-scaping skills to do the stone work.Over the next few months that were verydry a pathway to the site was formed; thismade it easier to get materials there. Mayand June 2004 saw some really goodrainfall and the planting of some hakeas. The stone is there and ready to be workedon. Paul, with the help of his son Gus,started trimming and shaping the stone, and by the end of August the seat iscompleted. River pebbles are obtained togo at the front of the seat. A MemorialGarden sign pointing along the path iserected. It is now February, 2005 and Joy has beenreceiving some very good feedback on thisproject. She is organizing for a smallstone plaque to be engraved. A date is setfor the official opening time. It will be

10:00am on Sunday 22nd May, 2005.April and the Memorial Stone is set inplace. It reads: “REMEMBERING OURLOVED ONES” and has a small gumnutengraved on one corner. A happy hourwas held there that evening with a brilliantfull moon to light up the valley, (read Joy’sinvite in separate article).May 22nd 2005 10:00am. President, TonySwinden opened proceedings then IanRoss conducted a very appropriateservice, and those present were asked ifthey would like to name someone theywant remembered. Here today on the 10th Anniversary of thatevent, we should honour the memory ofJoy and her love of this great club.Brian Stewart (340)

Yarck Memorial GardenA Personal View How The Seat At TheMemorial Garden Happened

Joy proposed if we could have a specialplace at our property to sit and remem-

ber the special people from Club and ourlives who have passed on. This seemed agood idea, and a site was located. When Joy found out that I did stone work, she asked me if I was interested in doingthe stone work. A seat was carved out ofthe embankment at the site by a few eager

members and stone was sourced thefollowing month. It ended up being gran-ite, not my favorite as it is hard to work withas it has no grain and so has the tenden-cy to break randomly.A month or two later on the day of the“build”, Gus (only 9 back then) was thereto give me a hand. He did some mixing ofthe mortar, trimming of the granite slabs.Sand was sourced from the sand pit, notideal as it is very course, that’s why thejoints are a bit grainy. The stone wasroughly set out and then mortared in

place. At the end of the day, we had a seat. It didnot turn out too bad, even if I say somyself.I have sat there with friends and by myselfwith a beer or glass of wine in hand, andadmired the view, while rememberinggood times with ones no longer with us.Paul Langenberg (33)

Joy Thomas Memorial Garden

Shortly after joining the Toyota LandCruiser Club, I was introduced to Joy

Thomas. The first time I heard from herwas at a Club meeting where she stood upand addressed the meeting about one ofthe many landscaping and greeningprojects at Yarck. One thing that I learntvery quickly about Joy was her absolutepassion for Yarck and its flora and fauna.Today, looking around Yarck, there aremany projects including the magnificentgardens that we as a Club owe thanks toJoy. One of these includes the MemorialGarden. Joy came up with the conceptand then it was a case of finding an

appropriate yet discreet location on theproperty. Anybody that knows theproperty will be well aware of themagnificent views afforded of the propertyfrom the top of Latimers. A location on thesame hill was found that was discreet andaccessible by foot.A group of people were assembled andthe concept discussed. Those of you thathave had the chance to visit the MemorialGarden will have had the ability to see andfeel the tranquility that the location andlayout offers. Many people have told oftheir time up there reflecting on loved onesor simply just on life generally. As a Club, we are blessed to have such abeautiful and very special place. It is hard

not to think of Joy, the amazing contribu-tion that she made to the Club and thewonders including the Memorial Gardenthat she left behind. I am certain that shewill never be forgotten.Ian Ross (1409)PRESIDENT

As there was more than one nomination for the position of President – Ian Ross and Laurie Miles – each person has 2 minutes topresent their case as to why they should be elected and what they are going to do for the Club, moving forward. As Laurie Miles was away, Ian Wells presented a case on his behalf advising that Laurie has been in the Club for 19 years, he has run80 trips for the Club, he has a passion for four-wheel driving, he has been assisting members with OziExplorer and been the ClubWebmaster over the past 13 years, which is a big job. He publishes Weekend Wrap fortnightly, and set up the Club’s Facebook website.Laurie is a qualified Financial Planner but as he no longer wished to continue that role he became a “Postie.” On asking Laurie why hewished to take on the role of President, he advised that there were some divisions within the Club and he wanted to bring people togeth-er again. There are 5 very important aspects of the Club, which are 4WD trips and activities, training, FWDV, emergency response andthe Club property at Yarck. He wants to develop that strategy for the Club and engage with the Club members, sustainability within theClub, and just by looking at the number of deleted members – we have to have change.

Ian Ross asked the members to vote for him for a further term. As President, Ian has achieved quite a number of things:(a) Trip attendances have been quite an issue, and we hope to put in place a review process to look at that(b) We’ve used the strength of the Club to pro-actively assist FWDV to get it back on track, which it now is(c) We provided members the opportunity to be involved with community activities and public relations(d) We’ve provided members choice of activities including community, etc. centered around responsible 4WDing(e) I have made myself available and attended numerous meetings, events and socials, etc(f) I’ve questioned, probed and considered numerous ideas together with the Committee and embraced the challenge of a strong yeteffective leadership to the members, and more importantly to let the members have their say.I ask that you allow me the opportunity this year to complete and implement the new membership system and website. I have furtherdeveloped a good financial position for the Club, which has greatly improved during my term as President. Complete the trip reviewprocess and implement the recommended changes. Continued to provide good governance, support our sub-committees as best aspossible to deliver the best training opportunities, trips, facilities and activities, strengthen our reputation in the 4WD community and seekways to improve our members’ involvement and enjoyment, and most importantly allowing you, the members to have your say.

Tony Bryant, the Returning Officer explained the voting procedure and advised that the scrutineers were Brian Tanner, Mary Phillips andGabi Azzam. All proxies that were received have also been handed out to those for voting.

THE AGM WAS SUSPENDED AT 8:55 pm.THE AGM WAS RE-OPENED AT 9:10 pm.

ARB has introduced the ARB Summit, the next generation of vehicle protec-tion sysems for modern four wheeldrive vehicles.

As consumer demand for a greater level ofvehicle integration from aftermarket acces-sories continues to grow, ARB is address-ing this concern with the introduction ofSummit.Comprising a full range of protectionsystems, including front, rear and sideprotective options, ARB Summit wasdeveloped and styled to provide a moderninterpretation of the renowned ARBprotection range that would complementmodern dual cab and wagon vehiclesthrough a fresh, contemporary designlanguage.Building upon our proven air bagcompatible bull bar mounting architecture, the Summit bull bar is the first product inthe new range. Unique design elementsinclude the 30mm edge radius on thewings and centre pan, wider press formed

cover straps, 60.3mm top frame tubing, twopiece polyethylene buffers and redesignedfog light surrounds, to name a few.Provided as standard, the high output LEDindicator and clearance lights provide adistinctive on road presence with longservice life. With twin aerial tabs and driving lightmounting provisions, the Summit bull barprovides an ideal platform for additionalvehicle accessorisation. In the interest of improving usability, theSummit bull bar removes the need forwinch clutch cut outs in the top pan of thebar, replaced by an easy to use accessport integrated directly into the front grillesection. The Summit bar accepts a range of Warn,Magnum, Bushranger and Smittybiltwinches up to 10,000lbs and is the firstmodel to include an integrated control boxmount to conceal winch electrics behindthe bar. This further enhances air flow tothe vehicle, while protecting the control boxfrom damage off road.

Summit’s attention to detail continues throughout, with the inclusion of a patented side rail attachment system that couples the bull bar and larger 60.3mm side rail tubing securely without any visible fixation. A reinforced Nylon cover sleeve protects the attachment system and provides a higher level of aesthetic finish. An all new anodised aluminium tread plate makes entering and exiting the vehicle safer and aids traction in inclement conditions.Adding to the overall visual aesthetics of the Summit range is the use of synchro pulse controlled welding. The system controls the current pulse so only a single droplet of fillermetal is detached each time, resulting in a virtually spatter free weld that offers seam quality in line with that of the TIG process The Summit bull bar and side rails and protection steps are currently available for the Ford Ranger PX (2011 on). Additional vehicle applications will follow.www.arb.com.au
