Noah Gregory GlassmanNoah Glassman will become Bar Mitzvah on June 7, 2014. He is the son of Dina and Darren Glassman and the grandson of CBI members Jack and Lucy Shapiro. Noah attends Metro Montessori Middle School and is supporting the Oregon Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society for his Mitzvah Project. The MS Society is

committed to creating a world free of MS, mobilizing people and resources to drive research for a cure and to address the challenges of everyone affected by MS. Oregon has the one of the highest MS rates in the country. Noah’s mother and grandmother both live with MS, and he chose his mitzvah project to support them. He formed a Walk MS team by reaching out to close friends and family and asking for their support. Together, they raised over $4,000 for MS, and Noah was identified as one of the top five individual fundraisers for the event, which was held on April 19th. His project also involved designing the event’s kids’ zone, which featured activities, games, and face painting for youngsters. To learn more, please visit the Multiple Sclerosis Society website: www.nationalmssociety.org/Chapters/ORC.

Natalie Ruth PetermanNatalie Peterman will become Bat Mitzvah on June 14, 2014. She is the daughter of Steven and Melissa Peterman and the younger sister of Jeremy. Natalie attends Lakeridge Junior High School in Lake Oswego and has chosen to work with the Children’s Book Bank for her Mitzvah Project. The CBB collects and refurbishes books

to give to kids and families who can’t afford them. Natalie has organized book drives at both her elementary and middle schools as well as at Religious School, plus she will have donation bins at her Bat Mitzvah for those who want to bring in gently used books. To learn more, visit the Children’s Book Bank website: www.childrensbookbank.org.

Benjamin Elliot RabbinoBenjamin Rabbino will become Bar Mitzvah on June 21, 2014. He is the son of Elizabeth Domagalski and David Rabbino and the younger brother of CJ Connolly. Benjamin attends Lake Oswego Junior High and has selected to work with Special Olympics Oregon for his Mitzvah Project. This worldwide organization allows people

with special needs the opportunity to compete in an environment where they will feel successful. Special Olympics Oregon provides year-round sports training and competition statewide to children and adults with intellectual disabilities and offers competitions in 14 Olympic-type sports over three different sports seasons. They are also well-known for their annual Polar Plunge, a unique and daring fundraising event. Benjamin explains why he decided to work with SOOR: “My cousin Margaret has Down Syndrome, so this cause is really close to my heart. Special Olympics is wonderful at providing opportunities to people who might not have them in a typical athletic environment. I want everyone to experience the joy of being on a team and making a ‘great play.’ Next winter I will be a

coach’s assistant during the Special Olympics basketball season. I am very excited to share with the kids the skills that I have learned in school basketball and basketball camps.” In addition, Benjamin has set up a First Giving webpage through SOOR to raise money to help provide equipment and coaching to a team this coming year. You can help him reach his goal of $2,000-3,000 by visiting his page: www.firstgiving.com/soor/benjaminsbarmitzvah.

Emma Grace SidellEmma Sidell will become Bat Mitzvah during the 5:00 PM Havdalah service on June 28, 2014. She is the daughter of Scott and Pamela Sidell and the younger sister of Sydney. Emma attends Cedar Park Middle School and is partnering with the Sunshine Pantry for her Mitzvah Project. Well-known by many students and families in our

congregation, Sunshine Pantry is a non-profit pantry offering food, amenities, housewares, and clothing to those in need, currently serving over 500 children, women, and men within Beaverton, Tigard, Hillsboro, and Forest Grove. Over the coming months, Emma will be volunteering at the pantry and, specifically, helping children with food and entertainment needs over the summer. She will come up with an easy meal for kids to make at home, while their parents are at work, and solicit for those donations. Emma’s project will be on-going over the next several months. You can learn more about helping the Sunshine Pantry at their website: www.sunshinepantry.org.

Pride in Portlandby Rabbi Rachel L. JosephAssistant Rabbi

June in the United States means Pride, and Portland is one of many areas across the nation that hosts Pride festivals in June. They are all connected to the Stonewall Riots that broke out the night of June 27, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn in New York.

The Inn was a popular spot for the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (GLBTQ) community, and it wasn’t unusual for the police to raid it. The raid on June 27 became a milestone event, because Inn-goers fought back against the police.

Pride festivals like the one in the Portland are all part of the effort to organize for equality and to bring positive change to the community.

This year, Congregation Beth Israel will be participating in the Portland Pride Parade on Sunday, June 15, and we hope you will join us!

The Jewish community has a unique opportunity to show support by participating in the parade as a visible sign that we welcome all. Each of us, created in God’s image, has a unique talent with which we can contribute to the high moral purpose of tikkun olam, the repair of our world. Excluding anyone from our community lessens our chance of achieving this goal of a more perfect world.

Pride really connects to our Jewish values: it inspires – and is inspired by – Kavod (respect), B’Tzelem Elohim (made in God’s image), Kol Yisrael Arevim Zeh Bazeh (communal responsibility), Shmirat Halashon (guarding one’s language), and V’ahavtah L’Reiecha Kamocha (love your neighbor as yourself ).

As a congregational community, we have been steadfast in our support of equal rights for all. And on Monday, May 19, 2014, a federal judge ruled that our state’s constitutional amendment banning marriage for same-sex couples is unconstitutional! The ruling went into effect immediately, and already, hundreds of loving gay and lesbian couples across the state are sharing in the joys of the freedom to marry.

While the law has changed, there is still much work to be done, and I look forward to marching together towards a more perfect world!

Upcoming e-mail blasts will provide complete information on when and where to line up for the parade. Don’t forget to wear your CBI Mitzvah 365 t-shirt!

The Whole Fills the Holeby Jenat Levison FeldmanDevelopment Director Here we are again, completing another very lovely and successful year of Developing CBI. Development Committee Chair Ted Nelson and I are so appreciative of all of you who have supported our fundraising efforts this past year, both

as donors to various appeals and attendees at all kind of events. We are committed to working together to engage our community in everything CBI has to offer, and based on our growth and increased levels of participation, it seems to be working!

Whether you contributed to the Every Family Initiative, attended Better Than Broadway and Taste of Temple, enhanced your annual contribution (formerly dues), increased your support to our Religious School program, or donated in other meaningful ways, your

contribution made the difference, and we are proud to report that by joining forces together we exceeded this year’s $200,000 goal. Even better, there is still time to be included in this year’s fiscal contributors listing, which will be printed in full in our July/August Bulletin. It is our honor to be able to recognize so many generous supporters.

Every gift fills the hole and enables us to provide a multitude of meaningful programs and services. Sydney’s report on page 4 provides numbers by which you can measure our effect; the focus of this note is to say thank you over and over again for being a supportive member of our congregation. We are proud of our open door policy and pleased we can make synagogue membership affordable for everyone. Thanks to you, CBI has been given the opportunity to create Jewish memories and impact Jewish lives every day. It is your support that makes all things possible. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

AND THERE IS ALWAYS MORE TO COME.

Our Leadership

CBI by the #sBy Sydney A. Baer,Executive Director With a tip of the hat to Past President John Rosenthal (a lover of numbers, statistics, and fun factoids), we share that our membership has continued to grow with the welcoming of 60 new families this past year. Of these 60 new families, we are thrilled to report that

11 were previous members who have rejoined our congregational family. Approximately 30% of our new families have religious school age children. We also said goodbye to some members due to death, families moving away from Portland, some requesting a leave of absence, and other extenuating circumstances. One of the goals of the Every Family Initiative created by Board Member Eric Friedenwald-Fishman was for everyone to help us continue to grow our membership. Perhaps we should change the name to “every family is involved and encouraged to invite their family and friends to join our wonderful community”! There are some congregations back east with capped and closed memberships – that is not us, and we welcome new families. Our history provides us with a rich heritage, but it is only by embracing new congregants that we ensure we will be here to serve the generations to come.

Continuing our numbers theme, we had 103 Shabbat Services this year! We had to cancel a Friday evening Shabbat Service due to the severe winter storm in February – the first time we have cancelled a Friday evening Shabbat Service since the Columbus Day Storm in 1962. We were able to hold our Saturday Shabbat Service the following morning, albeit a few hours late! We celebrated 11 Tot Shabbats, 34 Mispacha Minyans and Shabbatini services with our religious school students, 3 Pajama Havdalahs with our preschoolers, 5 Meditation and Healing Havdalah services, 75 combinations of musicians (guitar, percussion, flute, violin, and piano) participating in our Shir Shabbats and Shabbats on the Plaza, 12 Adult Education programs with the theme “Where We Came From,” 50 Torah Study sessions, and 20 Alef Bet and Beyond Hebrew classes with Cantor Schiff. Our choirs were an amazing addition to our Yom Kippur services, as well as a part of our legendary Martin Luther King, Jr service, our never-to-be-missed Purim Schpiel, and our Chanukah celebration. They also participated in our Shabbat Services and have been on the road with concerts at Cedar Sinai Park. We had 3 very successful friend and fundraisers attended by close to 1,000 people. Many thanks to the Oserans for the well-attended Oseran Family Lecture. The board has participated in 4 meaningful leadership development workshops taught by Rabbi Sam Joseph, as well as several workshops for our committee chairs, promoting further collaborations for our congregation. We have 32 little ones in our recently certified preschool and 298 students in our K–12 URJ-accredited Religious School. This year, 38 of our students became Bar and Bat Mitzvah, there were 12 students in our Confirmation Class, and 10 students graduated from our Religious School. Ilene Davidson (please see her article on page 5) has put the “action” in Social Action with a plethora of programming this year – I don’t have a number of how many people we fed, tutored, and nurtured, but it is in the thousands. The Membership Committee started a new “greeters” program, and last summer, they started our new tradition of wearing name tags at all CBI events – I have lost count of how many name tags we have used this year! This exciting list goes on, but there isn’t room to share all that has happened at CBI in one year. We were

trying to add up the aggregate number of people who have walked through our doors this year for services, programming, religious school, life cycle events, holiday celebrations, meetings, and Mitzvah Day – if we had a clicker, it would probably be close to 50,000 clicks!

MAZEL TOV TO JILL RUBINSTEINRecipient of the 2014 Rabbi Rose Tikkun Olam Award

Jill is a lifelong member of CBI, having grown up at CBI. She often shares her fond memories of attending services with her grandparents Dorothy and Max Lesman and parents Herbert and Shirley Semler. Jill is a Past President, having served from 2012-2014. What many do not know is Jill’s long, passionate, and quiet commitment to eradicating hunger. Jill spends several days a week working at the Oregon Food Bank, sorting, organizing, and delivering food. She also works with Tracy Oseran’s Urban Gleaners. She has worked on and contributed food to all of our Soup Sac programs, Mitzvah Day projects, and related Social Action projects. She works tirelessly on the distribution of surplus food, an integral piece in the war against hunger. She is continually educating her family, friends, and community about the easy ways everyone can help eliminate hunger and prevent waste. Jill is often the last to leave both public and private gatherings, making sure all the leftover food items are re-distributed to those in need. Jill has made a difference and continues to make a difference in the lives of many. It was with great pride that CBI’s Social Action Committee voted for Jill to be the 2014 Rabbi Rose Tikkun Olam Award recipient. Past recipients include Rabbi Rose, Dr. Jill Ginsberg, our BINA Committee, Tracy Oseran, Dr. Gregg Coodley, WRJ/Beth Israel Sisterhood, and Sanny Snell.

TODAH RABAH, KAREN KRANZ

About 12 years ago, Karen Kranz noticed we didn’t have regular ushers for our Shabbat Services and quietly stepped in to welcome our congregants and guests to Shabbat and High Holy Days services. She soon found herself the chair of our Ushering Committee and co-chair of the High Holy Day Usher Team with Kevin Hoover. Sometimes Karen is a committee of one, taking her responsibility seriously and always making sure we have an usher, often ushering for both our Friday evening and Saturday morning Shabbat Services.

Karen was our usher coordinator for our many special programs as well, making sure our congregants and guests were well greeted. We are so appreciative of Karen’s devotion to ushering, always greeting everyone (often by name) with a smile and prayer book, offering help to those new to our community, and sitting at the back to watch out for everyone and everything. We are in the process of forming the Shalom Squad and creating a new team of ushers. Thank you, Karen, for your longtime commitment to CBI and for being such a wonderful role model.

May we all continue to go from strength to strength.

Social Action

Final Thoughtsby Ilene Davidson

As I look back over the year, I am amazed by all that our Social Action Committee accomplished. This has been a profound experience for me as I’ve watched so many people give of themselves to help others. While our focus continues to be on food justice issues, we recognize how hunger and poverty impacts people in so many negative ways, from children being too hungry to learn to people literally not having enough to eat.

We’ve built on the work of others. For example, from Sisterhood’s commitment to feeding the residents of Goose Hollow, the Social Action Committee formed a Village Support Network team under the auspices of New City Initiative to help a family transition from homelessness into a stable home environment. Last December, Daureen Morris, Sally Rosenfeld, and I started working with a family of six, and it’s been a profound experience for all of us. We’ve been supported by the generosity of our congregants through donations to the family and by our Social Action Funds. I realized that it is in the “everyday” that we can make a real difference. When the children in our “family” run to greet us with hugs each time we visit, when they enjoy the books we read to them, when the parents (both under 30) thank us for caring - this is Tikkun Olam. This is why we join together.

We often get hugs from the students we work with at the NW Tower Annex. While our Wednesday tutoring may be untraditional (at best), we’ve had an impact on these kids. One student who moved to another building returns almost every Wednesday to be with us. Special thanks to Julia Waldinger, Marge Congress, and Janet Friedman for their devotion to the kids.

While we may not get the physical hugs, we are having the same effect when our congregants provide food and funding for our annual High Holy Day Food Drive, school supplies, coats and shoes to the kids at NW Tower, pots and pans through our Purim drive to benefit the

guests of the Community Warehouse, make food to be distributed through our Soup Sac program, and deliver 6,000 pounds of apples to feed those in need. Even providing prizes for the bingo nights at the NW Tower gives the residents an opportunity to socialize.

Special thanks to all of you who made our Mitzvah Day 365 our best ever! Thanks to our captains: David Goldwyn, Linda Harrison, Don Spiegel, Janet Morgan, James Anchell, Stephen Cassell, Eric Wyatt, Alexa Hasman, Daphna Stadig, Andy Olshin, Rob LaForte, Julia Waldinger, Nikki Dorfman, and Tiffany Goldwyn.

And the day would not have been possible without the work of our Committee members: Julia Waldinger, Alexa Hasman, Stephen Cassell, Janet Morgan, Andy Olshin, Rabbi Joseph, and Sydney Baer. I also want to thank Mac Senders for his hard work leading up to and during the entire Mitzvah Day – our Blumauer kitchen has never been so clean!

Our Social Action Committee members are absolutely amazing, and we’ve received outstanding guidance from Rabbi Joseph. I know we will continue to do great things when our new co-chairs, Elizabeth Friedenwald and Rebecca Friedenwald-Fishman, begin their work. I know you will give them the same support you’ve given me as we strive to make our world a better place, one person at a time.

A special thanks to The Sewing Room (www.thesewingroom.info) for their generous donation of a sewing machine for our Village Support Network family. The owner, Wendy Benjamin, reminded me again how many good and generous people there are in our city.

You’ve given me such a gift over these last two years. I’ve learned to be even more grateful for all of the joys in my life. A major joy has been the opportunity to meet and spend time with more of our congregants, to be part of the CBI community. It is here for all of us. I’ve gotten back so much more than I’ve given - new friendships, new opportunities to learn about others, and how to be a better person. Special thanks go to my husband Jim and son Alex, who’ve supported me in every way, from financial to literally carrying thousands of pounds of apples (and the same ones twice!).

Let us continue to strive to make our world a better place by helping one person at a time.
