June 2014 THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE PART OF A GREAT STORY A capital campaign is an exciting time for God’s people to come together and experience God’s use of resources, provision and abundance given to his people by him. It’s a time to acknowledge that everything we have comes from his hand and our giving is a reflection of that. It’s a time to witness the family at North Park come together and pour their offering to him above their regular giving. There are several great stories where God allows his people to witness and experience this blessing in his word. In Exodus 35, Moses asks everyone with a willing heart to bring a contribution. Verse 24 tells us that everyone who could make a contribution did. The contributions poured in. In 1 Chronicles 29:3, David leads by example, “I give to the house of my God over and above all that I have already provided for the holy temple”. David challenges everyone in verse 5 asking who is willing to consecrate himself this day to the Lord? He is asking who is willing to follow my example? Who will give himself and all he has to the Lord? Then verse 9 tells us that everyone poured in their resources. Nehemiah was an obedient servant that mourned the broken walls of Jerusalem. He was mocked and ridiculed, but Nehemiah’s story was about more than a wall. It was about love for God, his people and the restoration of obedience to the Lord’s holiness. I resonate with Haggai. In Chapter 1:4, the Lord speaks through Haggai the prophet, saying “Is it time for you, yourselves, to dwell in your paneled houses while this house lies desolate?”. Verse 8 says, “Go up to the Mountains, bring wood and re-build the temple that I may be pleased with it and be glorified.” Lori and I have been in our home for 24 years, and we have updated almost everything in our home over those 24 years. Wouldn’t we rush to update what is worn-out and tired in our home church of 21 years – our place of worship? Of course we would! North Park has been a church that grows, stays relevant and stays ahead of the current culture. North Park thought outside the box 50 years ago when it was started by 12 families that wanted a relevant message and style to reach the neighbourhood of Northridge. North Park has grown to have relevance and influence in London, larger than could have been foreseen. With vision, the faithful people of North Park built a 60,000 square foot church home in 1993. Then, in 1999 a youth wing and a theatre of 40,000 square feet were added which became a dynamic place of ministry for youth. North Park has been a church of renewal, expansion and outreach for 50 years. Many of us have enjoyed a church facility given and built by those that came before us. Now it is our turn to keep North Park relevant and stay ahead of the curve. Now it is our turn to update our place of worship with carpet, seating, sound and media to prepare for the next generation, to expand our walls for even greater, relevant ministry. We also want to reach out and provide seed funding for Asian Fellowship, Mosaic Intercultural Church and our outreach ministries. We encourage you to join us on Sunday, June 1 at 6:30pm for our Town Hall meeting where we will describe the project and answer any questions you may have. THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE PART OF A GREAT STORYA capital campaign is an exciting time for God’s people to come together and experience God’s use of resources, provision and abundance given to his people by him.

In 1 Chronicles 29:3, David leads by example, “I give to the house of my God over and

above all that I have already provided for the holy temple”.

Verse 8 says, “Go up to the Mountains, bring wood and re-build the temple that I may be pleased with it and be glorified.”

Lori and I have been in our home for 24 years, and we have updated almost everything in our home over those 24 years.

Moses, David, Nehemiah and Haggai, are great examples for us. North Parkers, in 1964, 1993 and 1999 have come together for a moment such as this in 2014 to take his church and move it forward. LEADERCAST RECAP….“BEYOND YOU” LEADERSHIP

MEDIEVAL TIMES SPRING RETREAT

Mark Morrison, Director of Community Life

Josh Black, Director of Jr High Ministry

On Friday May 9, North Park welcomed almost 550 leaders from over 175 organizations around Southwestern Ontario who engaged with the theme “Beyond You”.

The day was highlighted by a fantastic lineup of world-class speakers including Andy Stanley, Dr. Henry Cloud, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Laura Schroff, Laura Bush, Malcolm Gladwell, Randall Wallace, Bill McDermott and Simon Sinek. Here are some thoughtful takeaways from the day:

• “Beyond you leaders fearlessly and selflessly empower leaders around them, as well as those coming along behind them.” - Andy Stanley• “The value of a life is always measured by how much of it was given away.” - Andy Stanley• “Opportunity comes when passion and what you’re good at meet a need.” - Dr. Henry Cloud• “Leaders go beyond themselves when they give up control and let their people get results.” - Dr. Henry Cloud• “A person is a person through other persons.” Archbishop Desmond Tutu• “To be happy in life and beyond life, you have to use the unhappy, unexpected things you didn’t want to happen to you.” - Laura Bush• “Unless you go about enacting authority with fairness, respect, and trustworthiness, people won’t follow your lead.” - Malcolm Gladwell• “What happens to your soul when you give, that’s what matters.” - Randall Wallace• “In groups we are remarkable. Anyone that did anything remarkable didn’t do it alone.” - Simon Sinek

The day was a “Beyond You” day because of the generous contributions that came from so many people inside our church family. First of all, we would like to thank the 43 volunteers who linked arms to be the hands and feet of Jesus to our guests. We are continuing to receive encouraging comments about the unique kindness, generosity and grace that this team displayed during the day. Secondly, our friends Jane and Henry Bruinink, along with their first rate catering crew, put out a masterful display of food during the breaks and lunch, and we cannot forget to mention Breanna Black (our Jr High Director, Josh Black’s wife), who led her dedicated event planning and design team by transforming the look and feel of the auditorium along with the décor around the building.

Finally, as a result of hard work and corporate sponsorships, we met our audacious goal to make sure that 20% of our attendees were under the age of 25 – and 10% of those were under the age of 19. This strengthens our mission to pour into the next generation of lead-ers – something that North Park believes strongly in doing. On behalf of the North Park staff, thank you for praying with us and for helping us pull off this event. We praise God and continue to ask him to speak into the lives of the 550 leaders who attended the day.

If you would like to attend Leadercast next year, the date for your calendar is Friday May 8, 2015.

In the Jr High world here at North Park, May means one thing: Spring Retreat! Every first weekend in May, we take a group of Jr High students off site for a weekend of spiritual renewal, relationship building and crazy games. This year, we took our students back to Pearce Williams Christian Centre where, though the weather was wet, we were able to have a great weekend.

This year’s retreat theme was Medieval Times which included jousting, great wide games with Robin in Da Hood and an amazing leader hunt on Saturday night. Students were really able to grab hold of the theme during dinner on Saturday night as they dressed up in different costumes having to do with the theme. We had some incredible costumes

Though we’re sad that another Spring Retreat has come and gone, we’re praying that the things our students took away from the weekend would truly last a lifetime. As congregants of North Park, I ask that you would pray the same, that our students would be able to grasp the ideas and concepts that they were taught, and that they would be able to implement them in their daily lives.

and it was great to see students get so involved! During this great weekend, we invited Jase Lavigne, the youth pastor at Calvary Church in Simcoe, ON, to speak to our Jr Highs. He focused in on the battle that we as Christians are called to be a part of, and how God gives us the tools that we need (the Armor of God) to fight that battle. Our students engaged and took away some incredible things.

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY INTERN

YOUTH MINISTRY INTERN

MEET OUR SUMMER INTERNS

Jim Wells (Jazz), Pastor of Children and Family Ministries

Josh Black, Director of Jr High

Steve Cassidy

I am excited to introduce the Children’s Ministry Intern for this summer - Rachel Holloway! Rachel is presently teaching grade 2 Sunday School every week, and was a key member of the Stomp team this past year. She will be involved with the preschool & elementary ages this summer, as well as playing a large role in the Children’s Day Camp. On behalf of Cathy Thornton and myself, I would like to welcome Rachel to our team this summer.

Hello North Park! My name is Rachel Holloway, and I’m going to be working here for the summer as the Children’s Ministry Intern. I’m from a small town up north called Callander - near North Bay, ON. I have spent the past two years here in London working on my undergrad in Genetics at Western University. I’ve spent a lot of my past summers learning and growing at a Christian summer camp up north. I’m really looking forward to using some of those skills, and applying them to my job here. Some of the things I enjoy are swimming and spending time outdoors. I can’t wait to spend the summer in London and get to know more of the members here at North Park. See you in the summer!

Each year as a youth department, Kevin and I have the privilege of hiring a summer student to help with our Sunscream Jr High Day Camp and other summer activities around the church. This year we’re thrilled to introduce you to Andrew Coughlin, a student at Master’s College and Sem-inary in Peterborough, ON. We’re so excited to have him on board, and for an opportunity to see him grow in his faith and capacity to lead others.

Hi my name is Andrew Coughlin (AEn-droo COG-lin) and I was born to be a youth intern. You probably don’t know me yet, but you will… oh you will. I first came to North Park last summer to help with Sunscream and have periodically shown up here and there to be a part of retreats and special events. The staff and congregation of North Park were so extremely welcoming that I decided not to go home! So here I am. If I were to describe myself in one word I would say “Andrew” cause that’s my name, and I respond to that. Everything else (aside from what I share below) is a mystery. A mystery wrapped in an enigma. Here’s what you can know. I am currently entering into my third year at Master’s College and Seminary, working towards a Bachelor of Theology in Youth Ministry. I am a very passionate person, and one of my biggest passions is to see young people become lights in a very dark world. I am grateful and excited for the opportunity to come alongside the youth of North Park, to help them discover their purpose in God’s Kingdom.

The Life Resource Centre is pleased to welcome three new summer interns. During their time at the Centre they will help facilitate summer Day Camps, oversee Community Outreach projects, and mentor Day Camp counsellors.

I have just completed my first year at King’s University College studying Childhood and Social Institutions, as well as minoring in Disability Studies. It has definitely been a fun journey just starting university, and I’m now excited to get the experience of being one of the interns at the Life Resource Centre. My heart has always been for children and youth, and I know that this summer will be one with lots of learning, as well as fun with the many children and youth involved with LRC. I look forward to not only getting to know the children and youth, but getting to work alongside George and Sosina, as well as Steve Cassidy, Krista Arnold, and David Cottrill.

I have been waiting for the summer since school started. With the amount of stress and responsibility university holds, school can drain the fun out of life. Working for LRC this summer will allow me to relax, recover, and enjoy life. The LRC should pride themselves in how their community atmosphere has helped me grow as a person. Being a summer intern allows me to meet some wonderful people and develop long and lasting relationships with community members. With memories from the last two years of being an intern, I am greatly looking forward to meeting new faces, trying out new things and having the best summer ever.

I attended York University this past school year where I had a great first year learning and getting involved around campus. I had the chance to meet many students from all around the world. As a film student I appreciated the chance to go on film sets, work with young directors and learn from them. Now that I am back in London, it is very exciting to be back with my family and friends. Having been involved with the LRC for the past 4-5 years as a youth member, I am looking forward to working as an intern this summer to continue my involvement.

INVESTING IN OUR YOUNG CHILDRENDanielle Cordell

I have had the privilege of serving in North Park’s Preschool Ministry for the past three years. I was asked to share a few of my thoughts and experiences as a volunteer. Let me first say that as a team, we are well supported. We are kept well informed and organized. Bible lessons are prepared and given to leaders a week ahead and are always interactive and fun. It’s amazing to see a group of one, two and three-year olds really engaged in a God-centred Bible time, learning about Jesus through songs and stories. Getting to know the kids and trying to reach their hearts for Christ has been truly rewarding.

Another great thing is that you never serve alone! I have served alongside some extraordinary people, and many wonderful relationships have grown out of the time we have spent together. I have been incredibly blessed by the many staff that have poured into my three children, and I now have the opportunity to give that same gift to other families. I’ve enjoyed watching older children and youth serving alongside one of their parents. My hope is that my children will develop that same desire to serve as they see it modeled before them.

As I reflect on the past year that I have spent in the three-year-old classroom, I am amazed at how God has changed me through this experience. I have moved from thinking, “I should be serving,” to “I really want to be here!” My family attends the 9:00am service on Sundays, and for the first time this year, I volunteered in the second service. This arrangement has worked out perfectly for us. We get to attend church together, I am able to worship and hear the message each week, and I am filled with God’s truth as I serve his precious children. My daughter even joins me once in a while, which is really special.

So my question for you is, have you ever considered serving in the Preschool Ministry? Now is the perfect time to join us, as we are in the process of forming our staff teams for this summer and for the next school year. I encourage you to prayerfully consider it. I have found it to be a wonderful opportunity to meet new people, invest in the young children of our church, and have God change me in new and exciting ways. It could be the same for you! If interested, please contact [email protected]. Arrange to come for a “Peek-a-boo” service, and sit in on one of our classes. Discover for yourself the joy of Preschool Ministry!

CHILD DEDICATIONSCathy Thornton, Director of Preschool Ministry

Dedicating our children to God is a very special moment in the life of our church family. There’s something deeply moving about seeing parents bring their children before God to entrust them to his care. There’s something equally touching about the church standing together with parents and pledging our support. On May 4, we had the privilege of joining thirteen families as they dedicated their children to the Lord. A few have chosen to share their reflections with us.

Celebrating Robby’s dedication at North Park among family and friends was a great day! As first time parents, this definitely was a monumental moment in our lives and we know just how important raising children with faith truly is. We are forever grateful to our loving parents who instilled faith, hope and love in us through living selflessly and showing us how to have a relationship with our Saviour. Not only was this a special day to dedicate our son to the Lord, but to also publicly declare that we will do our best to model what it means to be the parents that God has called us to be. Thank you to North Park for supporting us in this special occasion! - The Dupuis Family

We treasure the opportunity we have had to dedicate each of our children at North Park. The intentional time to ac-knowledge the blessing of our family is very valuable to us, and we appreciate the encouragement, support, prayers, and guidance that North Park offers to young families like ours. Participating in a child’s dedication creates a tangible point of reference, reminding us that our children are a gift from God. It also spurs us to step up to the responsibility of raising our children in the light of Christ, and try each day to model lives that will influence and inspire our children to be bold Christ-followers themselves. Raising children is no small feat as anyone who has done (or is doing!) this job will likely attest to. Though it brings great joy, it can also be exhausting. It is easy to worry about making wise choices for our children, or live in fear over protecting them in this crazy world. We find great comfort in knowing that God will guide our steps and provide us with all that we stand in need of when we trust him. When the days make us weary, we can find strength in Christ. And the knowledge that our babies rest in the palm of God’s hand brings great peace. Dedicating our children to God empowers us to confirm these truths, be confident in them, and move beyond our doubts in order to find our greatest potential as parents. Thank you North Park, for the value you place on both children and families. We can’t imagine raising our kids without the input and support of such a caring community.-The Cake family

We decided to participate in the dedication for our daughter Lydia because we know that it is very important to publicly declare our desire to be the best Christian parents we can be and to “train up a child in the way she should go.” We also know how important it is to have the support of fellow Christians around us and to have their help in the teaching of our children about Jesus. So thank you to those of you who committed to being alongside us as we teach and watch our children grow. Our desire for our children is that they grow to have a heart that wants to please the Lord and not man and that they are surrounded by excellent Christian examples. - The Decker Family

WHERE JESUS’ LOVE IS ONE-OF-A-KIND

SUNSCREAM

Jim Wells (Jazz), Pastor of Children & Family Ministries

Josh Black, Director of Jr High Ministry

There have been a few days to hint that summer is coming, but if you look at the calendar, you know it will be here very soon. That’s exciting for me because that means it’s almost time for another incredible week of Day Camp! We will be learning through the avenue of weird and unusual animals, that Jesus’ love is very special, and that his love includes each and every one of us. I think I will fit in very well with this year’s camp, and of course so will Miss Cathy.

During the month of May, the volunteers sign up online for camp, and that number of volunteers helps decide how many kids we can take for camp. The kids are put in age appropriate small groups of about 10 along with a youth and adult leader. We always have lots of youth to help with camp, and like to have an equal amount of adults as well. So adults, think of it like this: each adult who leads a small group, gives 10 children the opportunity to come to Day Camp. Over 50% of those kids have no connection with church and this is their opportunity to meet God. Once again we will have some exciting Bible rooms for the Bible lesson, lively music that the kids will remember for a long time, crazy games to play, delicious snacks to eat and creative craft/science times for the kids. On the last day (Friday, July 11) we will host a barbecue for the whole family to enjoy, including snow cones, a gym full of inflatables, games and more. I look forward to working with many of you at Day Camp. Remember that at the end of these kid’s lives, the only thing that matters is their relationship with God.

As the weather politely tells us that summer is finally coming, we’re beginning to gear up for our FUEL summer programming, which for our Jr Highs means something very important is coming: Sunscream! Each year we invite Jr High students from all over the city to join us for our annual Day Camp - a week of craziness, organized chaos and fun. Each year we take our students to the beach, water park, Canada’s Wonderland and spend a couple of days here on the North Park campus creating a fun and safe place for students in July.

Students in grade 6-8 (or going into grade 7-9 in the fall) are invited to join us for this incredible week, where they’ll be able to meet new people, build relationships, and engage in some pretty awesome activities. For most students who join us each year, Sunscream is one of their summer and even yearly highlights.

This year Sunscream will run from Monday July 21 until Friday July 25, with each day’s schedule being unique and incredible. Online registration for Sunscream 2014 will open up on June 2, and can be found on the North Park website or at Sunscream.ca.

If you’re interested in being a leader at Sunscream this year, we’re also accepting volunteer applications from students who are headed in to Grade 11 or older, on the North Park website. Being a leader is not only a great way to earn community hours, but it’s also a great way to get engaged in our Jr High program. We look forward to seeing you there!

THE BEGINNING OF NEW & LASTING FRIENDSHIPS

SPA DAY - GIVING BACK

WORLD REFUGEE DAY

Krista Arnold & Tendayi Gwaradzimba

My husband Dennis and I first began attending Transitions at North Park in 2005; it was called “Middle Agers” at that time. We heard about a bus trip they were planning to New York City and thought, “What a great opportunity to see the city and meet some new people.” This was the beginning of many new and lasting friendships, fun times, and spiritual growth for us. As a result of our being involved in the group, several special life-changing events have occurred. One event stands out as a highlight for me each year - the group’s Strawberry Social in June, hosted annually at the home of one of the members. A couple of years ago at the Strawberry Social, I was introduced to a lovely gal that I’d never met before. We soon discovered we had much in common - our love of travel, family, and cottage vacations - and very quickly we became friends.

Since childhood, I fondly remember spending summer vacations in Parry Sound, where my mom was born and raised, and later, with our own kids and grandkids renting various cottages for our annual summer vacation. During our conversation that afternoon, we discovered that the cottage we had rented the previous summer was near their family cottage and that we lived in the same neighbourhood in London. I remember telling her that we were having trouble finding a suitable cottage to rent that year and she told us about the perfect cottage on their lake and shortly after told us about another couple that would be selling their cottage nearby. We purchased that cottage, thus fulfilling a lifetime dream of mine - to own our own cottage! More recently we felt God was leading us to find a LIFE/Bible Study group. We were soon invited to join a new group through Transitions friends and have met some wonderful new people thus deepening existing friendships and enjoying spiritual growth. Transitions has been a blessing in our lives and a place where we feel accepted, loved, and supported and where we can learn, worship, and share life’s challenges, sorrows, and joys.

The next Transitions event, and the last of the season, is the BBQ & Strawberry Social on June 14. Tickets will be available in the gym beginning June 1. You are invited to come and find out how to make our big church seem smaller by getting connected with others in the 45 - 65 (and be-yond) age group. Our group takes a break for the summer and will resume on the third Friday evening in September.

Spa Day is an opportunity to bless the hard-working women in our community who rarely take time out for themselves. It is a day for volunteers to help these women feel refreshed with facials, massages, hair treat-ments, etc. It is also a day for local women to be empowered by giving back to volunteers through providing their own services such as henna, eyebrow threading, and manicures.

Overall, it is a day of mutual giving and receiving that will foster long-lasting, supportive relationships between volunteers and community members. If you are interested in learning more about Spa Day, please contact [email protected].

World Refugee Day has been celebrated on June 20 since 2001. This day was designated by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to bring attention to the plight of refugees around the world.

Who is a refugee? Refugees are people who have been driven from their home countries by persecution and armed conflict. According to the UNHCR, there are 15.5 million refugees throughout the world in need of protection and assistance. A refugee can be a friend, neighbour, your child’s classmate, the person sitting next to you at work, or in your house of worship. Refugees are incredibly resilient people who have overcome unimaginable trauma and persecution and are determined to survive and contribute to their new home country.

Why Celebrate WRD? World Refugee Day is an opportunity to honour the courage of women, men, and children who are forced to flee their homeland under threat of persecution, conflict, and violence, and who must find safety, regain hope, and rebuild their lives in a new place. It is also a day to recognize the contributions of refugees in their new communities.

During the weeks leading up to World Refugee Day and on the day itself, local organizations are encouraged to reflect on what can be done to help refugees in their own communities. For this reason many churches celebrate WRD to promote the Christian value of hospitality and welcoming the stranger. The annual WRD celebrations at North Park are a very important time for our refugee neighbours to speak with us about refugee issues. Listening to refugee sto-ries will help us to learn more about the issues our neighbours are dealing with. This year’s celebration is of particular importance because refugee stories will be told through the ‘Spoken Word’ by Jenna Wickens. In addition, a dinner, film screening, and Global Market will be held at North Park on June 21 and June 22. For more information or to purchase tickets for the dinner, please contact [email protected].

It’s a well known fact that for centuries, Christians have been at the centre of reducing poverty all around the world. That’s understandable though as we have been given this great calling by God in the Scripture to be those who protect and restore the vulnerable of the world. From Genesis to Revelation, the story of faith is the story of restoring the disenfranchised and the hurting to a loving heavenly Father who cares for them and who longs for them to be safe at home with him. Jesus modelled this so beautifully for us by entering humanity through the door of humility and among the lowly. He even boldly declared his mission as “to seek and to save that which was lost”. You and I have been given the mantle of responsibility just as Jesus had. It’s the DNA of the Church to get involved. Given that at least 80% of humanity lives on less than $10 a day, we have a lot of work to do. How are you participating as a follower of Jesus in reducing that percentage? I don’t know about you but I get distracted from this reality.....every once in a while for a healthy dose of inspiration to get back on track, I take a look at www.globalrichlist.com.

North Park has always been a congregation acutely aware of the 80%. Since our beginnings in 1964, we have made it our purpose to join Jesus in this great task of reducing the number of vulnerable people in the world. We have sent missionary doctors; we have sent agronomists; we have sent community development workers. We are doing everything possible to see the gifts that we have, given away on behalf of the world.

However, the reality is that as a society, we are losing our personal grasp on understanding poverty. Our grandparents would have been much more aware of what it takes to engage with people who are under-resourced.... as they would have lived among those who are poor. I remember quite clearly my grandmother knowing those who were suffering and poor in her little village in Newfoundland...she was well acquainted with their challenges and knew how to help them. She knew how to give in ways that made them stronger as people and less dependent on others. I have lived a wonderful middle class life but it’s a tinge sad to think that I didn’t learn much about how to personally engage with those who are poor; I just didn’t have any people like that in my circle. Obviously none of the 80% of the world living below $10 a day lived in my neighbourhood! It is with this reality in mind that we are hosting two important learning events in June......

Poverty Revolution Boot Camp is Food for the Hungry’s insightful hands on training experience designed to give you the wisdom that you need to understand how poverty works and then discover significant ways in which you can make a difference. Using video, participatory exer-cises and real life cases, you will have the opportunity to wrestle with poverty...both in far away countries and in our own backyard. This training is designed for anyone who has an interest in working with under-resourced people. Check out www.fhcanada.org/bootcamp to learn more or to register. The Poverty Revolution Boot Camp happens Friday, June 13 from 6:00-9:00pm and Saturday, June 14 from 9:00am-4:00pm.

A Cultural Celebration of World Refugee Day is Life Resource Centre’s gift to the North Park family. Each year we take the time to reflect upon the challenges facing refugees around the world, and this year’s celebration promises to be the best ever. The World Cooks are pulling out all the stops for The Worlds Fare....a meal that will display the flavours of the world...with all proceeds going to LRC’s refugee ministry. At $20 a plate, you will not want to miss this...registration is limited so contact [email protected] early to get tickets. The Worlds Fare occurs on Saturday, June 21 from 5:30-6:30pm. Stay after the service on Saturday evening for A Cultural Celebration of World Refugee Day as friends from around the world share their talents, crafts, food, songs and dances with us here at North Park. The “main event” as we call it, happens after the services on Saturday night as well as on Sunday morning, June 22 from 10:00am-noon.

Ask God to give you wisdom and insight in touching the world around you. Grow in your own skills for engaging with people in poverty and refugees here in London and around the world. Let’s be a Church that understands and engages....
