“Leadership is a process not a position.”

It is hard for me to believe that it has been a year since I started my acceptance speech with this John Maxwell quote. What a whirlwind of a year! It seems like it just started and it is coming to a close already. It has been a lot of work, but more importantly, it has been a lot of fun. I hope it has been fun for you also.

John also says: “Leadership is influence, nothing more, nothing less.” A title, a position, or a catchy slogan does not make you a leader. You are a leader; you influence everyone you contact in some way and that

influence spreads in ways you cannot imagine. I have met and been influenced by so many wonderful people who may not realize they did. They are the true leaders of this organization.

If you have not yet reached your personal and club goals, do not give up ~ you can do it! It is very important that you never stop trying. When you stumble, get up and get going again. When you attain one goal; set another. Get out of your comfort zone – stretch. Never stop growing. If I can help you in your Toastmasters Journey, please contact me.

June marks eight years since I joined Toastmasters. I have been a part of the District Leadership Team almost as long as I have been in Toastmasters and part of my Club Leadership Team since I joined. Thank you for the opportunity; it has been my pleasure to serve the members of District 38 these past six years. You are the best!

Toastmasters Promise: Strive to Ignite Your Passion

District 38 NEWS Page 4 June 2013

By Valerie Price, CC, VP of PR Camden County Toastmasters

On May 18, 1953, the Camden County Toastmasters club was born. 60 years later the club’s members, past members, and guests celebrated this milestone anniversary by attending a reception dinner at Vittarelli’s Restaurant in Cherry Hill. The event was a success with roughly

40 attendees sharing wine and stories. The guest list included many of the club’s past presidents, some still with the club today.

After the food was served, several speakers including John Hargrave and Kim Avant-Babb recollected CCTM club history throughout the decades. Tony Perella, who was club president in 1972 and is still an active member, started us off with a first-hand account of club happenings that pre-dated the birth of many current members.

The speakers were followed by a humorous debate titled “Be it resolved that the Tooth Fairy Deception be banned in the US.” Some truly thoughtful arguments were presented (The Tooth Fairy provides

economic stimulus?) and the winner was left undeclared.

Several past presidents gave short speeches, all exhibiting skill and style they picked up through years of club participation and feedback. One of the last speeches was made by Ken Ashmen, in which he good-naturedly stirred up the envy of his listeners by lining up the

trophies he won in various speech contests. He hauled the trophies to front of the room in a Santa Claus-sized black bag and pulled them out one by one like Mary Poppins. The stunt along with his speech provided great inspiration for all in the room, especially to those members who had not yet entered a speech contest.

The night ended on a poignant note with a life-time achievement award presented to Tony Perella for his more than 40 years of contributions to the club. Camden County Toastmasters Club is open to all and holds meetings in Haddonfield, NJ. For more information, visit camdencounty.toastmastersclubs.org.

Club Spotlight: Northeast (NE) Philly Toastmasters

Greeted with a warm reception from the staff at the Sheraton Bucks County Hotel was the beginning to a great start of this picturesque weekend. Anticipation waits as I became exuberant to experience the two days of networking with fellow Toastmasters along with enjoying the delightful cuisine at the District 38 Spring Conference.

Entering the hallways of the hotel en route to the registration table as I carry the Northeast Philly Toastmaster banner, I saw a host of fellow toastmasters conversing with each other. I became quite apprehensive that no one will become approachable.

However, my anxiety quelled as the Conference Committee from District 38 illuminated the atmosphere with their jovial personality. As I mentioned my name at the registration table, the staff showed great delight bestowing the conference

materials that included a questionnaire for first timers to complete before the Saturday 2pm deadline. As I received the “Speaking and

Sparkling at 60” anniversary pin, I was also presented with a red ribbon that I wore with honor throughout the weekend which said, “First Timer”. There’s so much I could write as a testimonial to encourage others to attend a District 38

conference. I’ll conclude by stating that the conference has become a life changer from listening to “Dr. Dilip” and Sheryl Roush presentation on “Speaking from the Heart”, the “Road Map to Success” to my utmost fascination of watching the abilities of young people, ages 8 to 16, delivering their well-rounded speeches.

As I reflect on my “first timer” experience, Toastmasters is a definitive life timer. It’s a necessity that my journey in no way should cease as I continue excel and expand in areas of leadership and public speaking to assist my club, myself and others.

D38 Spring Conference Experience: First Timers are Life Timers

The first thing our guests notice when they attend a Northeast (NE) Philly Toastmasters club meeting at Harbor View is the warm and friendly environment. It was the first thing I noticed when I was a guest; it was so impressive I became a member that first night two years ago.

When our Area Governor, Mike Anderson, paid us a visit last July he noticed it too. Our President, Cathy Adams, had a genuine sincerity that always shined through. In our Toastmasters pledge it says, “We will serve as an officer when called upon to do so.” Last year when Cathy tapped me on the shoulder and said, "I

think you would make a great President", I couldn't imagine anyone doing it but her. It would be a huge responsibility to carry on in the style to which NE Philly club had grown accustomed, but the club voted and now it was in my hands.

I'm happy to report that my executive team made it easy to continue our core value of conducting our meetings in a warm and friendly environment. My team consisted of Bill McCulley, V.P. of Ed., Aileen Hill, Secretary, Dennis Deehan, SAA, Carol Deppen V.P. of Membership, David Lembo, V.P. of P.R., and Cathy Adams, Treasurer.

Several members will continue in these roles, but come July 1, our new President-elect, Armando Vega, will take charge and continue on the legacy of a club where each member can continue to learn and grow in a warm and friendly environment at NE Philly Toastmasters International.

SM x TM = $$$: Part III: Career & Business Insurance

By Rae-Ann Ruszkowski

Create Your Own Insurance! In Parts I & II, we covered repurposing your speeches, and tools to build your stage. Here we

address creating career and business insurance.

It’s more important than ever to find your

voice, know & grow your strengths, and demonstrate relevance & expertise. You can no longer put on blinders and go to your little gray cube. Competition is fierce, and the economic environment more unpredictable. You now have access to the tools, you have the power: Take more control of and create your future opportunities before you need them!

Become the CEO of your own company – You!, where every job is a project / a temporary position, every

contact is a future referral, and your speaking - social media skills set you apart. Nurture those skills and relationships.

Top 7 Tips to create career & business insurance:

1. Use TM to hone your voice, to id your strengths, to network.

2. Define & distinguish yourself through your deliverables, your methods, & your style.

3. Use SM to present your difference & why you are the solution. If you don’t toot your own horn, who will know when you’ve entered and can solve someone’s issues?

4. Use SM consistently to better communicate, influence, network, and measure your impact on the world. Use SM to manage and drive perceptions.

5. Know & grow your ROI (return on investment), through your speaking and your SM Communication

skills. Why should someone listen to you – hire you? Notice what people respond to, and how many people, and deliver more. Notice what people don’t respond to, and tweak.

6. Use TM & SM to stay relevant and valuable.

7. Use SM to highlight your TM HPL, ALB, contest win, governorship, & 50% membership growth achievements and lessons learned.

By ‘rocking’ a social media tool and becoming crystal clear of your strengths, you drive your social currency and create insurance. Aren’t your career and income worth the time?

Now launching! The new Speakers Bureau! First meeting is July 10. If you are serious about using your speaking skills to take you to the next level at work or in biz, then visit sjspeakersbureau.eventbrite.com/ to find out more and sign up.

The John E. Foster, DTM, Achievement Award was established in 1997 by Terry Schutt, DTM, PDG and then District Governor June Cottrell-Miller, DTM. This annual award recognizes a District 38 member who exemplifies the Toastmasters Vision and Mission and is presented every spring at the District 38 Conference.

John E. Foster, DTM, PID after whom the award is named, was the first recipient. A Past International Director and a Past Distinguished District Governor, John Foster is a well-recognized and highly respected leader throughout the Toastmasters organization. His continuous participation in Toastmasters activities is one of the many reasons why John was selected as the first recipient and namesake of the Award. For past recipients and nomination procedures, see tmdistrict38.org/FosterAward.html.

The 2013 recipient of the John E. Foster, DTM, Achievement Award is John Brown. John Brown is a Toastmaster for more than 20 years. Testimonials for John Brown’s service include compelling endorsements that include the following recognition statements:

With long selfless service on behalf of Toastmasters. John willingly, happily, and selflessly serves Toastmasters International through his recruitment efforts and promotion of TMI. He has served

the District as an officer, co-organized a District Conference. He is a fixture at District Conferences and has served and continues to serve individual clubs as a member, and officer, a founder and a mentor.

John’s devotion to the best interest of the individual member that makes him such an effective Toastmaster.

Demonstrated by his willingness again and again to serve in administrative roles at the club, area, division and district levels. But it is John’s devotion to the individual members that is most

striking. He sees the earnest application of the Distinguished Club Program as being the benchmark to measure how effectively clubs serve their membership.

John is a self-proclaimed toastmaster junkie. He gives one hundred percent in all he does and steps up to help whenever help is needed.

Photo: John is presented with the 2013 John E. Foster award by with 2012 award recipient Ronni Laino and John E. Foster. Congratulations, John Brown, on this well-deserved recognition.

Do you have a Toastmasters tote? You join Toastmasters. You are inspired. You sign up for roles. Then your new member kit arrives in the mail. You recognize the Competent Communicator (CC) manual… and use it. Hopefully, you wrote your name on the cover (after all, we all have the same manual).

What did you do with your other resources? Where do you file your completed manuals? When I joined Toastmasters over 10 years ago, I recall that I did not recognize the value of or use all of the new member kit

resources. Now I know better.

I remembered to bring my CC manual when I presented a prepared speech. However, I missed opportunities to track my progress because I attended meetings without my Competent Leader (CL) manual.

A fellow club member recently gave a speech about the alphabet soup of Toastmasters. What is that ACG? How do I earn the CL? How do we get there? By working the program and keeping good records.

Simmer your own alphabet soup recipe to perfection by organizing your Toastmasters resources in one place.

I use a Toastmasters bag. I use this bag only for Toastmasters, and I bring the bag to every meeting. In my bag: manuals; blank paper; sheets of green, yellow, red paper to use as a timing device backup; cough drops; writing utensils (enough to share with guests); tissues; name badge... you get the picture. As you cook up your own Toastmasters alphabet soup, congratulate yourself on your progress and keep track of your accomplishments. Serve and repeat.

Tip: Get and keep a Toastmasters bag. Don’t attend a meeting without it.

By Mikey Kelly, DTM, Division A Governor & Area 22A Governor, President Club #863788 Tobyhanna Army STRONG Communicators

You would never have believed the Division A contest unless you were right there, in the thick of the action, shoehorned into a room full of over 70 people (that technically should have held only 55.) There were heartfelt, touching speeches from our contestants that took public speaking and the art of evaluating to a higher level. There was supportive teamwork among the contest helpers and from applauding audience members. And there was also a little bit more...

Model Speaker Jerry Shockey regaled the audience with a wonderful speech about love; a love that he shared with his recently deceased wife Beth (Mainland FAA Toastmasters.) No one envied the evaluators who had to generate feedback on Jerry's speech, which earned him a standing ovation. Jerry touched us all with his bravery in sharing his heart at such a vulnerable time.

Also sharing his heart that day was Mr. Ronald James of Susquehanna Icebreakers Toastmasters (Area 28A) who surprised his lady friend with a public marriage proposal!

Then the Area Governors from Areas 11, 12, and 28 presented Division Governor Mikey Kelly with an engraved clock. In receiving the token of gratitude, Mikey was rendered publicly speechless. (Those of us who know Mikey know how rare this is!) Mikey stands out as an "extra mile" performer, proactively helping all the Area Governors in his Division, lending a hand above his chain of command, serving as expediter and mentor, filling the vacancy left in Area 22 as an Area Governor, and consistently going above and beyond in any capacity.

(...If you were still holding your breath about Ronald James' marriage proposal, she said "YES!")

And if all that excitement wasn't enough, here are the Division A contests' outcomes:

2nd Place: Sherry Beyar

3rd Place: Rey Roman

International Speech Contest

Standing Room Only Division A Speech Contest: You Wouldn’t Have Believed It

Princeton Toastmasters “Off the Rails, Wind in our Sails” Celebrates Creative Abilities By Barrie Byron, VP PR Princeton Toastmasters, Todd Greenwood, DTM, and extended creative team

Creativity is a vital source of energy and wonder. The dynamic communication that we practice at every meeting comes from the same visceral, emotional, and spiritual place where creativity lives. Ultimately, the more that we can see our public speaking practice as a playful extension of our creative abilities, the more likely we are to be willing to step out in ways we haven't been willing to try in the past. It is through this process that we learn and grow.

Princeton Toastmasters planned and executed an amazingly creative meeting on April 14, featuring “off the rails” enhancements that included:

Speaking in the round with a declared speaking area that even

had people sitting on the stage itself.

No handshakes. We used a hip bump when taking and leaving the stage.

No clapping. We used noise makers, including cell phone rings.

No paper agenda. Agenda (creatively produced!) was projected on the wall.

Speech evaluations were delivered by a panel and provided enhanced well-rounded feedback. The meeting role titles were equally creative, including:

Sultan of Spontaneity: Toastmaster Roaming Wrangler (creativity leaders) Luminary of Logistics: SAA Premier Prolocutor: President Meeting Maestro: Toastmaster Vocabulary Virtuoso: Grammarian Speech Stars: Prepared Speakers

Humor Honcho: Joke Master

By Dan Dougherty, ACS ALB, VPE of Professionally Speaking Toastmasters

I joined Professionally Speaking Toastmasters five years ago to learn to communicate about difficult subjects, such as economics. Along the way, a founding member of the club encouraged me to speak openly about my life as a person with epilepsy.

Photo: Dan Dougherty at Ambler Rotary

A few years ago I was trained by the Epilepsy Foundation of Eastern PA as a Patient Educator. In 2011 the Epilepsy Foundation asked me to speak at their annual Mardi Gras Gala to unveil their video known as Faces of Epilepsy. As I viewed the video, the spark was lit! A positive face was needed to put on epilepsy to the public.

Shortly afterward, I was invited by a friend of my father’s to speak to a local Kiwanis Club. A fellow Toastmaster club member, Bob Lankin, invited me to speak to his Rotary club. From those two experiences, I began to knock on doors of Kiwanis and Rotary clubs. Since June of 2012, I have spoken to 20 Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs to raise awareness of epilepsy!! Recently I began speaking to nursing students at Jefferson University Hospital.

If it were not from the preparation and support from Professionally Speaking Toastmasters, I would not be so lucky today to be honored to share with others my epilepsy experience.

A Toastmaster’s Experience Outside the Club

Social Media to Help Your Toastmasters Club Grow

By Dan Dougherty, ACS ALB, VPE of Professionally Speaking Toastmasters

Professionally Speaking Toastmasters has been active over 15 years and has helped many individuals get the confidence to overcome the fear in public speaking. As a club, we began to look at social media to spread the word of what Professionally Speaking and other Toastmaster clubs offer. A meetup.com account was created by a fellow member and has brought interested individuals to come and visit to find out what exactly is Toastmasters. For guests, meetup.com has been very productive, but we see a better opportunity in attracting members from a larger audience in our recent fan page created on Facebook.

Facebook allows Professionally Speaking to post photos of speakers

and share news in a place that the world can see what our club is up to. This strategy has a more personal impact, which will hopefully attract guests who will become new members to take advantage of the secret riches that Toastmasters offers.

To fellow Toastmasters clubs, take advantage of a Facebook fan page to

spread the word of our secret success in helping those find confidence in Public speaking and self-development at no cost!!

Ensure that your Facebook page complies with official Toastmasters branding. Review the brand refresher talking points at www.toastmasters.org/TalkingPoints.

In the About section of the page, include:

Club name and number

Geography

That the club is part of Toastmasters International.

Toastmasters International and Club Mission statements, our envisioned future statement.

The Vice President of Public Relations is a good candidate to administer your club Facebook page. Some clubs appoint another member, or even several administrators.

Some clubs use a private Facebook group, other club pages have public profiles. Work out a strategy that is relevant to your club environment. Encourage your members to “Like” your page so that your posts show in their newsfeed.

You can share posts to your timeline. Did you know that District 38 has a fan page? Like us at www.facebook.com/tmdistrict38.
