BOARD OF DIRECTORS
MANAGEMENT STAFF
It has been a great start to the 2013 golf sea-son! The flood control project approved by our membership at the annual meeting was enough to beat the Red River and the course is in great condition. I cannot thank our grounds crew and
all of our volunteers enough for all of their hard work. I am proud to be part of a club whose members and staff take such pride in their course! Our club is growing! Welcome to our 46 new members! We are planning a new member welcome in conjunction with the Couple’s Golf Kick-Off on June 7
th so mark your calendars and join us for this
fun evening of friendship, golf, food, and drinks. We have many new employees at the club this season and they are excited to meet you all. We have created a new training program to help insure consistently high quality service throughout all departments. Please bear with us as they learn everyone’s name and become comfortable with our systems and procedures. Finding Out About Club Events We want to make finding out about all that’s happening at your club easy! You will continue to see my weekly update and flyers around the club, but we have also added a weekly events reminder from Sarah, a monthly newsletter and we are in the process of rebuilding our website and launching a text club. The website and our Facebook page will always have the most up to date information on all events. Do you have any ideas on how we can communicate better? Please let me know at [email protected]. Other Reminders as the Summer Season Gets Underway Car Safety: Please obey the 20 MPH speed limit through town.
There are no sidewalks in Oxbow so there are often walkers, bikers, and children going to and from the club on the street.
Guest Policy: We encourage you to share your club with your friends and family, but please only bring out the same guest one time per month.
Help keep out course in the best condition: o Keep golf carts on the paths where possible and 30’ from
all tees and greens. Also, carts can only be operated by licensed drivers.
o Repair all ball marks and divots. As always if there is anything we can do to make your club experi-ence more enjoyable, please don’t hesitate to contact me anytime. See you at the club, Joel

When did you start at Oxbow CC?
I started at the beginning of 2012
What is the best part about working at OCC?
Can’t nail that down because the staff, members and atmosphere here is awe-
some. Its fast paced and always positive. Plus the members always know how to keep us staff smiling and on our toes :)
Favorite menu item at OCC:
I’m a health nut so definitely the shrimp Caesar salad… so good! I have been a
vegetarian for 2 years now and the cooks always like to scare me and say they put meat in my food, all in good fun though.
Position: Bar & Restaurant Staff
What do you like to do for fun outside of
work?
Running! I run everyday (or at least try to), road trips with friends and getting out to
my parents cabin. Mr. Andrews says I should take up golfing “I’m a natural”. Ha!
Fun fact about Greta:
No fun facts, I’m just an odd ball and love talking. So watch out, I’ll talk your ear off!
You’ll Need:
8-by-8-inch baking dish (glass
or ceramic is best)
1 1/4 cups flour
1/3 cup oats
1 1/4 cups sugar
6 tablespoons of melted butter
2 pounds chopped rhubarb
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon salt
It’s that time again and we are all ready for the season! We have heard many
great things about the new summer menu and have been making
adjustments as we receive more feedback. We are focused on fresh and
seasonal ingredients. In creating our new menu our goal was to keep some
of the most popular dishes on the menu while introducing some fresh ideas
for 2013!
Along with the summer lunch and dinner menu we will be offering a weekly special and fresh
seafood. I will also be posting a recipe each month in the newsletter. If there is a recipe that you
would like to see featured, let me know and I will do my best to get that recipe in the following
month’s newsletter.
This will be my 4th full season as executive chef and want to thank everyone for all the sup-
port you have given me over the years. Don’t be afraid to stop in and say “Hi”. Let’s have a great golf
season. Hit ‘em straight!

Guests
Welcome!
Finally, we can play golf and enjoy the course! Even though the range isn't up and running, you can still make an appointment for a golf lesson. Don’t start the year
with bad habits, get your spring tune up today! It is going to be a busy summer, so plan ahead and make sure you can play in all of our popular golf events!
We are happy to introduce two new additions to our Golf Shop staff, Liz Strom and Jeff Sivertson. We are also happy to have some familiar faces returning; David Talley, Peggy Sola and Brock Ellingson are all back for another season!
This past weekend we had our annual Opener tournament. The tournament was delayed due the conditions of our course from this past spring, but the delay was well worth the wait! Congratu-lations to Dewey Siverson on capturing first place in the gross division with a 73 and Tyler Holland taking the net division title with a 71.
Be sure to stop in the golf shop to see the latest apparel and equipment from Nike, Ping, Adidas, Puma, and more. Titleist and Ping will be here for a Demo Day on May 30th. This is a good time to try several different clubs before, after, or in between rounds of golf. We will have every club out at the Demo day. Don’t miss your chance to order new clubs! Remember, if you haven’t yet; sign up for Red River Club to get a 25% discount on new clubs plus a green fee pass!
Some upcoming events that you won’t want to miss are Couples Golf every Friday evening, the Battle at the Bow on June 14th & 15th, practice rounds, and Junior Golf Camp! We are also looking forward to Ladies Night on Wednesdays.
Play Well! JD
Hybrids and Your Long Game Hybrid clubs have provided a good way for golfers to improve their long game. They provide a bridge between hitting woods, which are more forgiving, and hitting irons, which are more accurate. Hybrids have mostly become replacements for hard to hit 3 and 4 irons. The reason? By design, 3 and 4 irons are not very forgiving. Also by design, 3 and 4 irons are the longest irons, and are therefore, harder to hit on-center. The result? Loss of distance on off-center hits. On the other hand, woods by design are much more forgiving. So with a hybrid, the head is designed similar to a wood head for forgiveness, but shorter in length and more accurate like an iron. When you replace your 3 iron with a hybrid, it is important that you hit the #3 hybrid at least as far as your best 3 iron shot. Farther is usually better. You may also find that a #4 hybrid will do the trick to replace the 3 iron. The main concern at this point is distance and consistency. The hybrid should help provide a solution to the distance gap between your fairway wood and your longest iron, which is generally a big gap. So focus on distance. And if you find you need a little more distance with your hybrid, extending the club an extra inch can provide an immediate solution.
As far as better consistency, it is important to know that when you hit a shot off-center (towards the heel or toe), you will lose distance, no matter what. Since hybrids are more forgiving than long irons, your hybrid shots should lose less distance on shots hit off-center than the long irons. Most importantly, a good hybrid will provide your game with more distance and a quality bridge between the woods and irons.
1. The Ruling that Woods Dropped in and Played from a Wrong Place (This could happen to anyone on hole 18, or any hole with water.)
The first question was whether, after taking relief, Woods played his next stroke in accordance with the Rules. The Masters Tournament Committee ultimately answered no and imposed a two-stroke penalty because Woods did not drop and play a ball “as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last
played,” as required under Rule 26-1a. The Rules do not define “as nearly as possible” in terms of a specific measured distance, because the conditions unique to each situation can affect how near to the original spot it is possible to drop a ball and because dropping a ball is an imprecise act. But in this type of situation, in which
that original spot was clearly identifiable as being just behind the back edge of the divot hole created by Woods’ previous stroke and in which there were no other unusual circumstances, “as nearly as possible” means that the player must attempt to drop the ball on or next to (but not nearer the hole than) that spot.
Woods did not do so. In his post-round media comments, he stated that he dropped the ball about two yards behind that divot hole. Although the precise distance away was not determined, he clearly dropped the ball a
significant distance away from that spot and did not satisfy the “as nearly as possible” requirement in these cir-cumstances. As a result, he was penalized two strokes for dropping in and playing from a wrong place.

With all that has happened this spring, I would like to thank all the volunteers that helped during the flood fight. This includes people that were here working with the sandbags, Aqua fence, manning pumps or donating services and
equipment. Oxbow would not be playing the lower holes without your help. The soil movement behind #4 green on the dike is being repaired as conditions allow. This slide in my opinion was triggered from the dry soil last fall. A crack between the black dirt and the clay allowed water to run down between the two different soil types, creating a slip plane. The integrity of the clay we do not feel was ever an issue. In all the years and floods that I have seen, this is the first soil movement that required a contractor to repair. Our focus now turns to golf and preparing the course for the season. The turf survived the winter as well as could be expected. As soil temperatures warm up any damaged areas will soon be recovering. Normally this month we would be aerating greens, but the rain has postponed this activity until later in the year. The practice facility project that was seeded in the fall of 2012 is coming along as planned. Some areas are ahead of schedule as the grow-in takes place, and others will need a little extra attention. We have completed the irrigation updates to the area and this will assist in establishment. Unfortunately the extended winter did not help our efforts in opening early; Patience is the only thing I can ask for until the grass becomes mature enough to support play. I would like to recognize our Assistant Superintendent Kevin Gruber and Maintenance Mechanic Dewayne Clark for all their hard work this spring. They put in a lot of extra time and effort in the flood fight. See you on the course, David Wood
