Dear Church Family and Friends, While a vacation is fun anytime of the year, most enjoy taking vacations in Spring and Summer, so vacation season is upon us. My wife and I just returned from one as I write this; it was great! I hope that each and every one of you gets a chance to take some time off this year. I can make a good biblical case for doing so. It certainly can be good for us spiritually, emotionally, and physically as well. But as with all such opportunities, how good it is for us, or even if it is good at all, depends on what we do with it. Let me share some thoughts that could help you get the most good from your vacation. Don’t over plan! Make some time to do nothing at all. Don’t overspend. Do something that you can afford to do so that the cost does not detract from the experience. Don’t expect too much from it. Kids, and sometimes parents, still get cranky, weather may not always co-operate, etc. It’s a break from everyday life, not a break from life itself! Speaking of everyday life, build it in such a way that while you enjoy a break from it, you won’t dread returning to it either. While you’ll likely be away from our church during your vacation, don’t take a vacation from the Lord! Take Him along with you. He will enjoy it, and so will you. Additionally, please remember that while it’s good to have a chance to go out of town, while you’re in the area, please keep coming to church and giving to the work. While some churches sort of fold up for the summer, we are always going full speed ahead. The summer brings many opportunities for ministry and outreach that we must capitalize upon. While at any given time a number of our people will be rotated out, we desperately need the ones who are here to man their battle stations and keep everything moving ahead. Your faithfulness has been a vital component of many blessed summers of the past, let’s all do our part this summer to make it another great one in the Lord. See you in our Father’s fields, Pastor Jeff

VACATION! Dear Church Family and Friends, While a vacation is fun anytime of the year, most enjoy taking vacations in Spring and Summer, so vacation season is upon us.

WINN'S Historian Commended for Research Since assuming the Winn's Church Historian position, Tom Lacy has been credited with solving many mysteries, not only in Winn's church history, but now for solving a long-standing mystery at Spring Grove #2 Cemetery. Judy Lowry, editor, Hanover Co. Historical Society Bulletin summarized Tom's article that appeared in the August 2011 Winn's newsletter. She concluded, "Rev. Lacy is to be commended for his investigation of the story of Deborah Anne Harris Winn and the early history of Winn's Baptist Church. His findings show that the stone in Spring Grove #2 cemetery bears folklore, not fact.

Deborah Anne Harris Winn: Mystery Solved

Although an engraved headstone may appear to be irrefutable, things are not always what they seem. A stone in the cemetery at Spring Grove #2 which appears to identify Deborah Anne Harris Winn as the wife of Jesse Winn and as the donor of the land for Winn's Church has been shown to be in error. In Bulletins No. 80 and 81, Rev. Tom Lacy, Historian of Winn's Baptist Church, has reported his findings that Deborah was actually Jesse's daughter-in-law, having been married to his son Thomas Gustavus Winn. It was also determined that John Winn's daughter Salley and her husband William Patmon, not Deborah Winn, transferred one-half acre for the church in 1827. Now, the discovery of Deborah's death record has resolved the question of her final resting place. When she died on 23 Feb 1905, at The Home for Incurables on West Clay Street in Richmond, she was buried in an unmarked grave in the Chancellor family plot at Riverview Cemetery. Evidently the burial plot was offered by the family of her daughter-in-law, Emma Lee Chancellor, wife of Deborah's son George Copeland Winn. Rev. Lacy also discovered that in 1997 when the Chancellor-Wythe Chapter DAR placed a plaque for Lieut. Hensley Grubbs in the Spring Grove #2 cemetery, the keynote speaker made a comment which has helped to solve the mystery of Deborah Winn. Mr. Robert W. Grubbs Sr. remarked that his uncle "romanced on the history in Hanover County and when he heard something that impressed him, he had a commemorative stone placed in the Spring Grove cemetery." Rev. Lacy is to be commended for his investigation of the story of Deborah Anne Harris Winn and the early history of Winns Baptist Church. His findings show that the stone in Spring Grove #2 cemetery bears folklore, not fact. Upon reading the above, Helen Yates, former editor of the Hanover Co. Historical Bulletin stated, "I'm very pleased, and am glad; the mystery on the tombstone of Deborah Anne Harris Winn has been solved." If you know of any mystery lurking around Winn's Baptist Church or any mystery in Hanover Co. related to Winn's, Tom would like to hear from you. Call him at 804-749-4050

I have been noticing a trend during my own Bible Studies in the Scriptures concerning God’s heart for how we are to be when we share His glorious TRUTH with the world. First, in Ephesians 4:15 we see that God wants us to speak the Truth, but with a heart attitude of LOVE. The Truth without LOVE will not reach anyone for Christ. We must tell others of the TRUTH out of a loving heart. We need to always remember that God is the source of TRUTH and LOVE and we need to make sure that we keep everything in perspective. Secondly, in 2 Timothy 2:25, we see God’s heart for us to have an attitude of humility when we share the Gospel or seek to correct a brother or sister in the Lord. That makes all the difference in the world.

It not only important what we say, but also how we say it!

Grace & Peace, Pastor Doug
