An Inclusive and Caring Christian Community Vol.83, No.6 June 2012

From Reverend MichaelFrom Reverend MichaelFrom Reverend MichaelFrom Reverend Michael

Since the first Sunday after Easter, our Sunday

morning bulletin covers have presented the Icon of the Holy Trinity (below) written by Andre

Rublev, making good use of our color copier to

provide this image as part of our worship

experience. (Icons are written, not painted.)

Icons are not merely a decoration, they are

windows to the reality of the Holy. The Icon of

the Trinity, as noted in our bulletin, is a fitting image for

contemplation at St. Clement’s because we identify ourselves as a

“welcoming” congregation with “generous hospitality.” In this

famous icon, the Holy Trinity is shown as guests (strangers) waited

upon by Abraham and Sarah, and is often called the Philoxenia

(translated “love for strangers”) of Abraham because Christians have

long held that the Trinity is prefigured in this story of Abraham’s

encounter by the Oaks of Mamre (Genesis 18:1-15).

Do we at St. Clement’s practice love for strangers? Do we love

strangers in a generic or theoretical way, such as with groups we

want to feel included in the life of the church? Do we love strangers

in a particular way, such as individuals who drive us bonkers? The

answer to these questions has less to do with our concept of having

visitors at church than about the time we take with, and the gestures

we offer to, those who do visit – and those we have neglected to

invite. At coffee hour, do we spend more time talking to someone

we know, or someone we don’t? Do we invite people to join us on

the pew next to us, or settle for the most distant point from others

around us? Jesus moved close, and invited others to move to close

to him. He taught us that we had the ability to do these things

ourselves. Jesus also taught that by doing so, we were participating

in the Reign of God.

Being a welcoming congregation takes intentionality. It is not the

work of just a few, like designated greeters (for whose work we are

grateful!). It is work that is intrinsic to our baptismal vows: to seek

and serve Christ in each person, to respect the dignity of all persons.

This is difficult work, because strangers can make us feel

uncomfortable. We are often taught to distrust

strangers, we learn to ignore them, or we may not

want to make small talk with them long enough to

really get to know them. Sharing the kindness that

we extend to our friends at church with those who

have not yet become our friends not only signifies

our openness to Christ’s work in our lives, it is a

practice that opens our hearts to experiencing God’s

powerful love, joy, and peace.

Joan Chittister, a well-known spiritual author in the

Benedictine tradition, writes that hospitality says to a

stranger, “Come right in and disturb our perfect lives.

You are Christ for us today.” (The Rule of Benedict:

Insights for the Ages, 2006). The Archbishop of

Santiago de Compostela wrote that hospitality to

pilgrims involves not only outward gestures of

welcome, but giving them our time, letting them

share their lives with us, and accepting strangers as

they are; “This disarranges our life,” he says (Juilián

Barrio Barrio, Pilgrims Through Grace, 2004).

The Trinity, as interpreted through the hospitality of

Abraham, transforms masters into servants, strangers

into friends, fear

into joy, and

hostility into peace.

Take some time to

peer into this icon

and allow it to peer

back into you,

expanding your

h e a r t f o r

compassion and

filling it with love.

In Christ,

Michael B+

Directory Additions and Corrections

Our parish secretary, Katie Finfrock, and Rev.

Michael both became graduates on May 18.

Katie graduated from Argosy University with

a Master of Arts degree in Marriage and

Family Therapy. Rev. Michael, as you may

already know, received his Doctor of Ministry

degree from Church Divinity School of the

Pacific. Our congratulations and best wishes

to both of you!

Rev. Liz's sabbatical, begun

May 20th, will continue until

September. Let us keep her in

our prayers for a creative and

renewing time, guided by the

Holy Spirit.

Senior Warden Cecilia Fordham will be

responsible for the daily operations of the

parish; Rev. Michael will be responsible for

liturgical, pastoral and formation ministries

during Rev. Liz's absence. For daytime

emergencies, please contact Carolyn Koehler,

our parish administrator (955-7745). For

evening emergencies, please call Rev. Michael

(927-9810). Please do not contact Rev. Liz

during her sabbatical, so that we can respect

her need to focus on silence, prayer, and

meditation that is vital to the time and space of

sabbatical work. You can keep up with her

sabbatical activities on her blog at

Parish Hike Holy Lingering:

hiking with a prayerful pace

Saturday, June 30th

A prayerful parish hike. Meet at the church at 8:30

am; we’ll be home by noon.

Trail: to be determined.

Watch the Sunday bulletin or email Rev. Michael

at [email protected] for more information.

Sunday Evening Prayer - 5:00 pm

Beginning in June, we will offer the evening office (Evening

Prayer, Rite II) weekly on Sundays at 5:00 pm. One service a

month will feature sacred music and hymns (“Evensong”).

This summer we will have a variety of Sunday morning Adult

Formation offerings this summer. Please join us at 8:45 for

some interesting discussions.

June 3 Kathleen Norris on the Desert Mothers (see article

below).

June 17 Liz Baldwin on her ministry to the families of

deployed military personnel.

July 1 Stuart Coleman on the ocean as a garbage dump

and the movement toward eco-spirituality,

morality, and religion.

July 15 Hilary Gangnes on faith and the justice system.

July 29 Michael Barham+ on the pilgrimage to Santiago de

Compestela.

August 5 Nellie McLaughlin and Beth Fincke on the 115

years of the Parish of St. Clement.

On those Sundays when there is not a special presentation,

there will be a video presentation and discussion to follow.

We’ll be using The Skit Guys, Vicar of Dibley, and other timely

and challenging and maybe even funny videos. The discussions

are always good and lively and fascinating! A great place to be

on your spiritual and faith journeys!

MEETING THE DESERT MOTHERS: Week one of our

summer adult formation series (June 3) features Kathleen

Norris speaking on the 'desert mothers.' Kathleen will present

some of the thought-provoking sayings of the “desert mothers,”

Christian holy women of the 4th and 5th centuries who lived in

Egypt and Syria. She will also talk about the monastic

movement which had a strong influence on the early church.

She will share stories of contemporary Christian women whose

faith has been tempered by “desert” experiences of illness,

loneliness, and loss. Kathleen hopes that people will be

prompted to think of the wise women in their own lives who

have been spiritual mentors. Some extra curricular reading with

a good overview can be found at this website recommended by

Kathleen:

Topics and Schedule Family "Mini"-stries

Summer Plans

Atrium I and II Sunday School classes will be taking a

break this summer, while our youth will continue to

meet weekly. The Family Ministries team invites

children of all ages to join them for three Summer

"Mini"-stries events.

Children of all ages are invited to meet in the Loo Parish

Hall following the 10:15 am service for a special mini-

series on our own St. Clement's "Mini"-stries. Lessons,

crafts, and activities will focus on ministries in which

families can participate together in hopes of helping our

children and Family Ministries collaborate on future

projects, such as outreach, food distribution, and green

team.

Journey to Adulthood and Rite 13 will continue to meet

in a combined summer series on questions of faith and

will make some “mini” pilgrimages together.

Summer will culminate with a family movie night under

the stars, for children of all ages!! Watch for more

details in emails/bulletin for families with children and

youth about Summer "Mini"stries!!!

Want to get involved? Email the St. Clement's Family

Ministries Team at [email protected],

Highlights of the May 8 meeting include:

• The Vestry looked at the outside cross above the

front entrance as a section of it has fallen down. Also,

the rear cross above the belfry is tilting and would

require a crane for repairs. It was decided to hold off

until this summer when the roof is inspected.

• The Vestry approved funds to have plans drawn up

for a larger storage building. Once completed we can

review the plans to determine the direction we need to take and if

this is feasible and necessary.

• Rev. Michael+ stated he’d be away to attend his graduation now

that his thesis is finished. He’ll return the day that Rev. Liz+

leaves for her Sabbatical.

• Bob Hann reported that the Farmer’s Market is doing well and

there’s a possibility of doing a survey in the future to determine

whether to rename or rebrand the market.

Vestry Highlights - May 2012

Sunday, May 27, 2012Sunday, May 27, 2012Sunday, May 27, 2012Sunday, May 27, 2012

• The Vestry moved to continue the tradition

of recognizing our graduating high school

seniors.

• There will be no Vestry meeting in June.

The next meeting of the Vestry will be

Tuesday, July 10, 2012 at 6 pm in the Loo

Parish House.

On the day that St. Clement’s School finished the 2011-2012

school year, work began on de-struction and re-construction of

the school playground. Thanks to a generous donation from a

school family, a new sports turf covering is being installed by

SportsTurf Hawaii. The old playground surfaces were installed

in 2001 and 1994 and were becoming a hazard to the children.

The new synthetic turf is highly durable, 100% recyclable, and is

a professional-grade product that is a popular choice for

professional soccer fields in Europe. A drainage system

installed underneath the surface allows water to be absorbed just

like natural grass. Until the project is completed, which we hope

will be in the next week or so, the playground is off limits to

everyone and the area in front of the playground needs to remain

clear of cars (except for Sunday mornings). In case you’re

wondering….. yes, we will be able to park on the new surface.

(The sexton says the best thing about the new surface is that it

doesn’t need to be

mowed!) These photos

show what a major

undertaking this project

really is. All the St.

Clement’s community is

deeply grateful to the

family who made this

possible.

Kaimana Scott Hoolulu-o-Kinoole van de Waal Punahou School class of 2012; will be attending the University of San Francisco in the fall

Kaimana was an infant and toddler in the St. Clement’s nursery, and returned when he became a youth,

being confirmed at St. Clement’s. He has been a regular acolyte and is active in the Journey to

Adulthood (youth) program. His favorite memory of St. Clement’s includes loving the family camps at

Mokuleia (in fact, that was what brought the family back to St. Clement’s); time with his church family

and friends there have been a special part of Kaimana’s growing up years and is close to his heart. In

High School, Kaimana was on the football and track teams, participated in the Holoku Pageant, sang in

the Men’s chorus, Variety Show, was a co-chair of a booth at Carnival Junior Year, was a member of

the Glass Blowing Club, and played league basketball. Outside of school, Kaimana likes all the activities with “boards”:

skateboarding, body boarding, snowboarding….

Max Orrin Tadashi Haworth Punahou School class of 2012; will be attending Lewis & Clark College, Portland, OR for

Environmental Studies

From in-womb to present, Max has been part of St. Clement’s, and his favorite memories of church are

camping at Mokuleia. At Punahou, Max was an involved athlete, including football, wrestling, and club

lacrosse. He was also involved with the Surfrider Foundation and Filipino club, played tenor sax in

several bands, and was a peer mentor and camp counselor/assistant. Outside of Punahou, Max worked

with Stuart Coleman on the RAP Campaign (Rise Above Plastics), participated in monthly beach

cleanups, and developed a petition to push the plastic bag ban bill in the Hawaii Legislature. He was

also was a teacher assistant for the ESL (English as a Second Language) program at Lunaliho

Elementary. Outside of school, he likes hanging out with friends, hiking, watching movies, surfing, and playing pick up

basketball games. He wrote of his favorite memory from high school:

My favorite high school memory was my first Varsity Wrestling pin when I had a really bad knee injury. I thought

that I wouldn't be wrestling that day with my knee wrapped like a mummy, but when my coach announced my name to

wrestle in one of the matches my heart sank. I could not believe that my coach actually called my name. It was a moment

where I needed to prove to myself that I cannot only get through this experience, but come out of it with a win, I could not

let down my team. So I stepped onto the mat, heart beating, knee exploding with pain with every step, but I was determined

to get this done. The whistle blew, my opponent had a jump on me and got the first take down, and he dominated the match

for the first two rounds. I barely could lift my knee up, but I remembered, I had to believe in myself, and something filled

me. The whistle blew and yet again he had a step on me, I was struggling to get an escape and then I rolled him over and

he landed on his back. I held him there for dear life trying to get the pin, and then a slam from the refs hand on the mat. It

was the best sound I have ever heard in my life. I shot up to my feet and looked to the stands and saw everyone screaming

and cheering for me. It was special moment and I felt that I had a little push from God to help me out to get that extra

drive for my first Varsity Pin and it shows that anything is possible even in seemingly impossible situations.

Maya Kauanani Suzuki-Jones Punahou School, class of 2012; will be attending Scripps College in Clarement, CA in the fall, for

International Studies and Diplomacy

Maya was baptized at St. Clement’s and has been a member her entire life, since 1994. She is a regular

acolyte, and has helped in the atrium (our children’s Sunday School), and in the nursery. Among her

favorite memories of St. Clement’s: going to Camp Mokuleia every summer. Her advice for the

parish: Keep calm and carry on!!! In high school, Maya was involved in Model United Nations, served

as a Summer School Teacher’s Assistant, participated in the Holoku Pageant, and was Graduation Co-

Chair. She received the President’s Award this year. Her favorite high school memory was marching with the Punahou

Band in President Obama’s Inaugural Parade in Washington, D.C. Outside of school, Maya has volunteered at Olivet

Baptist preschool, and her interests include ballet, and contemporary and jazz dance (she is a teacher’s assistant at Queen

Emma Ballet). She will miss the St. Clement’s community very much, but looks forward to coming back during school

breaks to visit.
