SOLOIST SPOTLIGHT: Sara Papini – Soprano

Soprano Sara Papini, dazzles audiences internation-ally. Her operatic performances include, Nedda [Pagliacci], Musetta [La Bohème], Adina [L’Elisir d’Amore], Norina [Don Pasquale], Gilda [Rigoletto], Contessa [Le nozze di Figaro] and Donna Anna [Don Giovanni]. Highlights include Tina in Jona-than Dove’s Flight, a New York City premier under the baton of Metropolitan Opera conductor Joseph Colaneri and Silvia in Mascagni’s Zanetto, conducted by Metropolitan Opera conductor Paul Nadler in Montreal.

Most recently, Ms. Papini debuted with the Mississauga Symphony Orchestra as Micaëla in Bizet’s Carmen.

Last summer, she made her Russian debut with the Primorsky Krai Philharmon-ic Orchestra in Vladivostok, Russia and has performed in Tel Aviv, Israel with the Israeli Chamber Orchestra. She has performed along side legendary Italian singer, Albano Carrisi, at Casino Rama and in Italy, including a broadcast of television show ‘I Raccomandati’ from Rome on RAI international. Ms. Papini has been a feature performer for such dignitaries as Princess Marconi, her Royal Highness Prof. Li of Manchurian Empire China, former Prime Minister Enrico Letta of Italy and the former Prime Minister of Canada, Stephen J. Harper. She is delighted to make her return to Symphony in the Gardens this season.

Romulo Delgado is a classically trained tenor and a world music multi-instrumentalist. He was a region finalist at the Hans Gabor Belvedere International Opera competition in Vienna, Austria. He trained in Toronto at the Royal Conservatory Music and the Glenn Gould School. His versatility as a performer has enchanted audiences all over North America and Europe as well various Canadian Prime Ministers and former U.S. president Bill Clinton. Azerbaijan-born Luiza Zhuleva was a 4th year stu-dent of the Nizhny Novgorod Academy of Music (Russia) when she made her operatic debut as Su-sanna in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro with the Rostropovich Philharmonic. She went on to per-form main roles as Marguerite in Faust, Serpina in La Serva Padrona, and Tatiana in Eugene Onegin in Nizhny Novgorod and St. Petersburg. After mov-ing to Canada in 2007, she was engaged by Opera in Concert to make her Canadian debut in the title role of The Snow Maiden. She has also appeared as Gorislava in Glinka’s Ruslan I Lyudmila and was cast to play Ilka in The Countess Maritza, Toronto Operetta’s production. Luiza has performed numer-

ous recitals and has participated in many programs for young opera singers where she worked with highly acclaimed musicians such as Timothy Noble, Milos Repicky, Martin Kats, Simone Luti, Chantal Lambert, Richard Margison and Valerie Kuinka. Her past and upcoming opera credits include Violetta in La Traviata, both Musetta and Mimi in La Boheme, Gilda in Rigoletto, Iolanta in Iolanta and other roles on the various stages of Canadian and Russian Opera Houses. She currently is living in Ekaterinburg and she is part of many operatic projects all over Russia.. Luiza is delighted to make her return to Casa Loma Symphony in the Gardens for 2017 season.

Canadian-German mezzo-soprano Sarah Christina Steinert is establishing herself as a versatile and sought after artist. The 2016-17 season saw Ms. Stein-ert in Toronto singing Marguerite in OBR’s Damna-tion de Faust. She was also in Ottawa and Montreal reprising the role of Adalgisa in Bellini’s Norma. Highlights from the 2015-16 season include Madame Defarge the world premier of A Tale of Two Cities with SOLT, Adalgisa in Bellini’s Norma, an operat-ic highlights concert with Oshawa Opera, Papagena in Mozart’s Masonic Journey: Die Zauberflöte, and Komponist in Ariadne auf Naxos. Ms. Steinert was awarded a bursary by the Canadian Aldeburgh Foun-dation, and had her European debut as Florence Pike with the Britten-Pears Young Artist Programme, in the Aldeburgh Festival’s production of Albert Herring in 2011. As an active performer on both the concert and the operatic stage, Ms. Steinert’s recent engagements

include: soloist in Singing Swords with Pellegrini Opera, Donna Elvira in Don Giovan-ni with both Voices Relyea and with Capital City Opera, the title role of Carmen with Oshawa Opera, the Raminsh Magnificat, Handel’s Messiah, Flora in TOC’s La Traviata, Mercedes in Pellegrini Opera’s Carmen and as a member of Opera Lyra Ottawa’s Opera Studio (2009-2011), she had the opportunity to perform the roles of Hansel in Hansel and Gretel, Dorabella in the Opera Studio’s abridged production of Cosi fan Tutte, Papagena in the Opera Studio’s abridged production of Die Zauberflöte, and she also premiered the role of the Dog in Dean Burry’s new opera The Bremen Town Musicians.

Praised as having a “stoic, manly sound” in his “unfailingly seductive” portray-al of Don Giovanni [Schmopera; Opera Canada] and “bringing a powerful baritone & exceptional acting abilities” to the title character in Somer’s Louis Riel [Opera Canada], Andrey’s most recent performances include Vladimir Galitsky in the Canadian Pre-miere of Prince Igor with Voicebox; Toronto Opera in Concert and Escamillo in Loose TEA Music The-atre’s Carmen (for which he was hailed as “having the perfect balance of swagger, darkness, and un-intentional smarm” [Schmopera]). Originally from in Krasnoyarsk, Russia, Andrey moved to Canada in 2008, receiving a diploma in operatic performance from the University of British Columbia soon after. Following graduation, Andrey made his professional

debut as Figaro in Il Barbiere Di Siviglia with Theater Hof in Germany, and has since performed in China, Italy, Spain, Canada, Russia, and the United States. Andrey is a laureate of several Russian National vocal competitions, a finalist in the XVII Concorso Internazionale per Cantanti Lirici “Spazio Musica” in Italy, and a winner of Jeunes Am-bassadeurs Lyriques in Montreal. Additional performance highlights include Count Al-maviva (Centre for Opera Studies in Italy), the Vampire in Der Vampyr (SOLT), Gianni Schicchi (Burnaby Lyric Opera), and Albert Speer in the 2015 premiere of Andrew Ager’s Führerbunker (COSI Connection). Upcoming engagements include a recital of “Russian Romances” for the Vancouver Women’s Musical Society in January 2017, and the role of Prince Khovansky in the Canadian Premiere of Mussorgsky’s Khovanshchina with Voicebox; Toronto Opera in Concert in March 2017.
