Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

Away from Home 2 Corinthians 5:6-10

Homesickness afflicts students away at school, workers on business trips and even families on vacation. It is exciting to travel, but going home is always the best part. Home is just that—a place we call our own, a place where we are most ourselves, a place of comfort, a center. It’s pleasant to see something else, but after a while it’s hard to be away.

Paul, the apostle, had ambivalent feelings about “home”. He was a missionary, after all, so he spent a good part of his adult life traveling and taking up different residences thanks to the kindness of strangers. Paul thought more deeply about the meaning of “home”. For him, it was not just a place, it was the very body we inhabit. “We are at home in the body.”

Even so, Paul was not at home with that home. At home in the body meant “we are away from the Lord.” And for Paul, that was the real home: being in the presence of God forever.

The homesickness we experience when we are away is a symptom of the “sickness” we feel throughout our lives. Something is always missing. Love doesn’t work out exactly as we’d hoped. Our skills are never quite as good as we’d like. Even our prayer is often disappointing. What we are missing is what we will experience when we “all appear before the judgment seat of Christ”—a home with the Lord.

Dear Parishioners, I want to express my gratefulness to Steve Gorzek for accepting my invitation to continue as Parish Trustee-Secretary for another two year term!

We thank all of these individuals and are grateful to the other adult nominees for their willingness to be candidates.

Thank you to Jeff Kapp and Paul Maranan for their years of service on the Council and to Andrew Hruz for serving as youth representative the past two years.

At the June 6th meeting of the Pastoral Council the follow-ing members were unanimously chosen to continue as officers of the Council: Chairperson, Lisa Blair; Vice Chairperson, Jack Raue; Secretary, Terri Alioto. We thank them for accepting these positions once again. Fr. Charlie

St. Jude Pastoral Council Meeting Minutes

May 23, 2018

Present: Father Charlie, Mary Voelker, Steve Gorzek, Ann Hruz, Paul Maranan, Jeff Kapp, Greg Gundzik, Rebekah Blaskowski (staff), Jack Raue, Garry Gerhardt, Gust Petrtopoulos, Lisa Blair, Terri Alioto Youth Representative: Andrew Hruz

Opening Prayer: Led by Gary Gerhardt

Minutes: Gary Gerhardt moved that the minutes from April 25, 2018 be approved and Jeff Kapp seconded the motion.

Lisa Blair asked to amend the agenda item under, “IX. Past Business, C. Parent Advisory Committee – Religious ED” to reflect that this was an idea that was offered at our April meeting regarding parish engagement. This is meant to be a discussion topic.

Pastor’s Report: Father recently spent time with the Lese family on the first anniversary of Kim Lese’s passing. Reflecting upon this and the recent passing of Paul Sanchez, as with all of our families who experience the death of a loved one – makes us so aware again of how much we are blest with a wonderfully supportive community here at Saint Jude’s.

Finance: The proposed 2018-2019 budget draft was reviewed. It was noted how Catherine LaDien, our school president-principal, invests herself deeply to keep Saint Jude School attractive to new families by providing a superior education to students. After considerable work on the part of the Finance Council, we have a well-thought-out budget for the coming year. Mary Voelker moved to approve the budget and Jack Raue seconded the motion. The budget as presented is approved.

Chair’s Report: A discussion followed on engaging the entire parish in community and fundraising events.

Staff Report: Rebekah Blaskowski, Director of Communi-cation and Special Events, reported that work on the St. Jude Parish Golf Outing, July 16, at Western Lakes, is progressing well. The St. Jude Parish Stampede is June 8. There are new activities this year including a dunk tank and a putting contest. More volunteers are needed.

Women of St. Jude: The 2018 Christian Awards were presented to Michael Rentmeester and Maya Nebbia, two 8th graders from St. Jude School. The award is open to all 8th graders in the parish.

Home and School: Mary Voelker shared a list of all the school fundraisers. The Home & School does amazing work in raising funds for the school.

Human Concerns: Paul Maranan reported that the Mother’s Day Rose Sale, to benefit the Wisconsin Right to Life education programs, sold 250 roses and raised $504.00. Parishioners are taking sandwiches for distribution to the MacCanon Brown Homeless Sanctuary on Tuesdays. Volunteers are needed for the 4th of July picnic at the Homeless Sanctuary.

Our Seventh Stampede Thank you to everyone who helped with and supported our seventh annual Stampede Run/Walk Fun Night on Friday, June 8th! It was a delightful evening. I like to think of it as our annual parish picnic as well.

My heartfelt thanks to the Stampede Committee led by Emily and Joe Steiner (Stampede Chairs), and the rest of their dynamic Stampede Committee: Greg and Mari Branson (Food Chairs), Liz Bergan (Volunteer Chair), Deb and Todd Schill (Bar Chairs) and Rebecca Eder (Race Course). And our gratitude to Rebekah Blaskowski and all the volunteers who helped with this parish event. Thank you everyone!

We are expecting over 200 guests at MBHS on 24th and Center Streets. We invite members of the St. Jude community to support Sister MacCanon’s outreach ministry.

We are seeking donations of cookies or bars that can be served as dessert at the picnic. We are also collecting travel-sized toiletry items of toothpaste/toothbrush, lotion, shampoo, soap and deodorant for hygiene bags that we will distribute to guests.

If you are able to donate a dessert or are interested in volunteering to set up or serve on the day of the picnic, please call/text Mary Jo Mance at 414-534-2868 or JoAnn Maranan at 414-530-3516. Email addresses for each are: [email protected], [email protected].

Urgent Need for Host Family Open your heart and home to Franziska, a Catholic exchange student from Germany for the coming 2018 Fall Semester. A volunteer host family (with or without children) as well as single parents are needed to provide food, a bed and a loving home for the coming school year to Franziska from Germany. She is 15 and she was looking forward to spend the fall semester in America but her host family had to cancel due to a family emergency and a new host family is needed to take over.

EMF students have medical insurance, spending money for their personal expenses and expect to share their host family’s daily life including household responsibilities. They speak English, are well-screened and eager to experience life in America. Their stay here is sponsored and supervised by EMF (Educational Merit Foundation), a non-profit educational exchange organization.

For more information on EMF students, please call Marie-Claude Dijoud now at 1-800-467-8363 or visit our web site at www.emfusa.org.
