What is JUMP Forum?

The JUMP Forum is the biggest single day event dedicated to the professional lives of women and their career planning. Each year it inspires hundreds of professional women and men across Europe, featuring the most successful women and the most brilliant experts in gender diversity.

Page 6: JUMP Forum Report 2011

Five year of JUMP Forum

On Thursday 05 May 2011 the JUMP Forum celebrated its 5th anniversary at The Automotiv House in Brussels! Five years of growing from strength to strength, dedicating ourselves to advancing the professional lives of women and working with companies to promote gender balance.

WITH THE SUPPORT OF THE WOMEN-FRIENDLY COMPANIES

From gender diversity to leadership varietyMore women in management creates a space for men and women to expand the way they lead. Beyond a gender diversity programme, companies should seek to diversify the range of leadership behaviours and spread good practices within the organisation.

New leadership models and corporate structures need to be developed that are more in tune with the competencies and leadership approaches of the women executives whom companies need to attract and keep if they are to remain competitive. Women were being urged to conform to a mainstream leadership style that was considered a fundamental requirement for anyone who hoped to exert authority in public life. Henceforth female leaders and diversity in leadership create competitive advantage by changing the company culture.

Getting new skills for a changing workplace is a strategic decision!

The fifth JUMP Forum prompts us to

question the real meaning behind it.

Thank you for attending this year’s

Forum. Thank you for your loyalty.

Thank you for supporting JUMP’s

mission through your presence.

But what exactly is JUMP’s mission?

Haven’t we already achieved gender

equality? On the occasion of the

Forum’s fifth birthday, I wanted to

expand on this year’s theme, “From

gender diversity to leadership

variety”. Why? Isn’t gender diversity

the ultimate goal?

More women in management

produces a space for men and women

to expand the way they lead. Beyond

a gender diversity programme

companies should seek to diversify

the range of leadership behaviors

and spread good practices within

the organisation. New leadership

models and corporate structures

need to be developed that are

more in tune with the competencies

and leadership approaches of the

women executives whom companies

need to attract and keep if they

are to remain competitive. Women

were being urged to conform to a

mainstream leadership style that

was considered a fundamental

requirement for anyone who hoped

to exert authority in public life.

Henceforth the mass arrival of

women on the labour market is

bringing more diversity in leadership

and creating competitive advantage

by changing business culture making

it more respectful of everyone, both

men and women.

JUMP is therefore not only a tool

for helping more women reach

the top, but above all it is an

avenue for change, leading society

towards greater responsibility and

sustainability. The success of women

is fundamental to this transformation.

Becoming aware of this ultimate aim

of JUMP, I met Marc Luyckx Ghisi at

TED X Brussels. I heard him voice

my thoughts exactly: “Women are

the leading vectors of change”. It

was therefore obvious to me that

he was the right person to lead the

2011 Forum. Here is what he wrote

about JUMP: “In pushing for more

women in leadership positions in

Business and administrations, JUMP

is pushing towards Humanity’s

Let’s give birth to a radically different future

Page 11: JUMP Forum Report 2011

survival, because those women could

propose a shift in the enterprises’

agendas towards more CSR and

sustainability.”

We live in a marvellous era when for

the first time in humanity, we can at

last choose our own path. What we

do with it is our responsibility. We

can imprison ourselves just as we

were imprisoned before, but with

different roles. We should make the

most we can of our lives, because

now we have access to everything.

Furthermore, if we want to become

a force and a voice in this world, we

have to support each other as women

and not let ourselves be distracted

by rivalry. This type of archaic

jealousy is still encountered far too

often. It is mainly the consequence

of thousands of years of domination.

A new culture, a new identity for

men and women is possible. The

world needs truly liberated women

working alongside men so that the

world can take the essential steps

towards greater responsibility.

I can’t resist finishing with a quote

from the philosopher Alain Touraine,

who explains that the reason why

women want power is to share it:

“The world of women, whose goal is

not the destruction of domination but

the construction of self, is driven by

the desire to experience an existence

which they themselves have

transformed, and the re-ordering of

society. Men, in contrast, conquered

the world by concentrating power

within the hands of just a few.”

Page 12: JUMP Forum Report 2011

JUMP is an enabler of a new and more

sustainable society. But it is also in

the same time helping business

leaders to generate more intangible

assets, which are counting for more

than 50% of its value on the stock

market. It is thus pushing enterprises

towards a win-win scenario for

society and for business.

We will not be able to solve our

problems with the old patriarchal

values of «CCC" (command control

and conquer). Those values which

have dominated our societies for

5000 years at least, are not going

to make it. We will have to introduce

a new cocktail of values of respect

and care for nature, for society and

for ourselves. Now usually women

are more able than men to introduce

those new life-oriented values in

society and business. In pushing for

more women in leadership positions

in Business and administrations,

JUMP is pushing towards Humanity’

survival, because those women could

propose a shift in the enterprises

agenda’s towards more CSR and

Sustainability. We see indeed some

important groups of enterprises

which begin to claim that for them

profit is only a consequence of their

action towards Humanity’s Common

Good. JUMP could be seen as

pushing enterprises in the direction

of becoming «part of the solution"

instead of «part of the problem"

increasing at the same time their

intangible value".

Thank you for inviting me to participate in the 5th anniversary JUMP event. I thought it was a very successful, and a very thought-provoking, event – and it was a pleasure to meet (some!) of the 550 delegates.

Peninah Thomson

Thank you for having me at the JUMP forum. I much appreciated to be there, meet with you and many other interesting women and attend the workshops.

Hebe Boonzaaijer

Xanthippe Laziradis

Thanks for the great seminar. I had nothing but good feedback from participants, they all said it was very interesting to them and set them to think.

Evy Hellinckx

What a wonderful time and brilliant speakers.

Dyahanne Ware

There was such a great atmosphere and a real sense of hope of change which is of course what you are all about. You should be immensely proud. Not an easy task but it really feels like you are making an impact.
